Now a certain man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived.1Ἦν δέ τις ἀσθενῶν Λάζαρος ἀπὸ Βηθανίας ἐκ τῆς κώμης Μαρίας καὶ Μάρθας τῆς ἀδελφῆς αὐτῆς
(Now it was Mary who anointed the Lord with perfumed oil and wiped his feet dry with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)2ἦν δὲ Μαριὰμ ἀλείψασα τὸν Κύριον μύρῳ καὶ ἐκμάξασα τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ ταῖς θριξὶν αὐτῆς ἧς ἀδελφὸς Λάζαρος ἠσθένει
So the sisters sent a message to Jesus, "Lord, look, the one you love is sick."3ἀπέστειλαν οὖν αἱ ἀδελφαὶ πρὸς αὐτὸν λέγουσαι Κύριε ἴδε ὃν φιλεῖς ἀσθενεῖ
When Jesus heard this, he said, "This sickness will not lead to death, but to God's glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it."4Ἀκούσας δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Αὕτη ἀσθένεια οὐκ ἔστιν πρὸς θάνατον ἀλλ’ ὑπὲρ τῆς δόξης τοῦ Θεοῦ ἵνα δοξασθῇ Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ δι’ αὐτῆς
(Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.) 5Ἠγάπα δὲ Ἰησοῦς τὴν Μάρθαν καὶ τὴν ἀδελφὴν αὐτῆς καὶ τὸν Λάζαρον
So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he remained in the place where he was for two more days.6ὡς οὖν ἤκουσεν ὅτι ἀσθενεῖ τότε μὲν ἔμεινεν ἐν ἦν τόπῳ δύο ἡμέρας
Then after this, he said to his disciples, "Let us go to Judea again."7ἔπειτα μετὰ τοῦτο λέγει τοῖς μαθηταῖς Ἄγωμεν εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίαν πάλιν
The disciples replied, "Rabbi, the Jewish leaders were just now trying to stone you to death! Are you going there again?"8Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταί Ῥαββί νῦν ἐζήτουν σε λιθάσαι οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι καὶ πάλιν ὑπάγεις ἐκεῖ
Jesus replied, "Are there not twelve hours in a day? If anyone walks around in the daytime, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.9Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς Οὐχὶ δώδεκα ὧραί εἰσιν τῆς ἡμέρας ἐάν τις περιπατῇ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ οὐ προσκόπτει ὅτι τὸ φῶς τοῦ κόσμου τούτου βλέπει
But if anyone walks around at night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him." 10ἐὰν δέ τις περιπατῇ ἐν τῇ νυκτί προσκόπτει ὅτι τὸ φῶς οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν αὐτῷ
After he said this, he added, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep. But I am going there to awaken him."11Ταῦτα εἶπεν καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο λέγει αὐτοῖς Λάζαρος φίλος ἡμῶν κεκοίμηται ἀλλὰ πορεύομαι ἵνα ἐξυπνίσω αὐτόν
Then the disciples replied, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover."12Εἶπαν οὖν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτῷ Κύριε εἰ κεκοίμηται σωθήσεται
(Now Jesus had been talking about his death, but they thought he had been talking about real sleep.)
Then Jesus told them plainly, "Lazarus has died,14Τότε οὖν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς παρρησίᾳ Λάζαρος ἀπέθανεν
and I am glad for your sake that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him."15καὶ χαίρω δι’ ὑμᾶς ἵνα πιστεύσητε ὅτι οὐκ ἤμην ἐκεῖ ἀλλὰ ἄγωμεν πρὸς αὐτόν
So Thomas (called Didymus) said to his fellow disciples, "Let us go too, so that we may die with him." 16Εἶπεν οὖν Θωμᾶς λεγόμενος Δίδυμος τοῖς συμμαθηταῖς Ἄγωμεν καὶ ἡμεῖς ἵνα ἀποθάνωμεν μετ’ αὐτοῦ
When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had been in the tomb four days already.17Ἐλθὼν οὖν Ἰησοῦς εὗρεν αὐτὸν τέσσαρας ἤδη ἡμέρας ἔχοντα ἐν τῷ μνημείῳ
(Now Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem,18ἦν δὲ ‹ἡ› Βηθανία ἐγγὺς τῶν Ἱεροσολύμων ὡς ἀπὸ σταδίων δεκαπέντε
so many of the Jewish people of the region had come to Martha and Mary to console them over the loss of their brother.)19πολλοὶ δὲ ἐκ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἐληλύθεισαν πρὸς τὴν Μάρθαν καὶ Μαριὰμ ἵνα παραμυθήσωνται αὐτὰς περὶ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ
So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary was sitting in the house.20 οὖν Μάρθα ὡς ἤκουσεν ὅτι Ἰησοῦς ἔρχεται ὑπήντησεν αὐτῷ Μαριὰμ δὲ ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ ἐκαθέζετο
Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.21Εἶπεν οὖν Μάρθα πρὸς ‹τὸν› Ἰησοῦν Κύριε εἰ ἦς ὧδε οὐκ ἂν ἀπέθανεν ἀδελφός μου
But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will grant you." 22[ἀλλὰ] καὶ νῦν οἶδα ὅτι ὅσα ἂν αἰτήσῃ τὸν Θεὸν δώσει σοι Θεός
Jesus replied, "Your brother will come back to life again."23Λέγει αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς Ἀναστήσεται ἀδελφός σου
Martha said, "I know that he will come back to life again in the resurrection at the last day."24Λέγει αὐτῷ Μάρθα Οἶδα ὅτι ἀναστήσεται ἐν τῇ ἀναστάσει ἐν τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live even if he dies,25Εἶπεν αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς Ἐγώ εἰμι ἀνάστασις καὶ ζωή πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ κἂν ἀποθάνῃ ζήσεται
and the one who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"26καὶ πᾶς ζῶν καὶ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνῃ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα πιστεύεις τοῦτο
She replied, "Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God who comes into the world." 27Λέγει αὐτῷ Ναί Κύριε ἐγὼ πεπίστευκα ὅτι σὺ εἶ Χριστὸς Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰς τὸν κόσμον ἐρχόμενος
And when she had said this, Martha went and called her sister Mary, saying privately, "The Teacher is here and is asking for you."28Καὶ τοῦτο εἰποῦσα ἀπῆλθεν καὶ ἐφώνησεν Μαριὰμ τὴν ἀδελφὴν αὐτῆς λάθρᾳ εἰποῦσα Διδάσκαλος πάρεστιν καὶ φωνεῖ σε
So when Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him.29ἐκείνη δὲ ὡς ἤκουσεν ἠγέρθη* ταχὺ καὶ ἤρχετο πρὸς αὐτόν
(Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still in the place where Martha had come out to meet him.)30Οὔπω δὲ ἐληλύθει Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὴν κώμην ἀλλ’ ἦν ἔτι ἐν τῷ τόπῳ ὅπου ὑπήντησεν αὐτῷ Μάρθα
Then the people who were with Mary in the house consoling her saw her get up quickly and go out. They followed her, because they thought she was going to the tomb to weep there.
Now when Mary came to the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."32 οὖν Μαριὰμ ὡς ἦλθεν ὅπου ἦν Ἰησοῦς ἰδοῦσα αὐτὸν ἔπεσεν αὐτοῦ πρὸς τοὺς πόδας λέγουσα αὐτῷ Κύριε εἰ ἦς ὧδε οὐκ ἄν μου ἀπέθανεν ἀδελφός
When Jesus saw her weeping, and the people who had come with her weeping, he was intensely moved in spirit and greatly distressed.33Ἰησοῦς οὖν ὡς εἶδεν αὐτὴν κλαίουσαν καὶ τοὺς συνελθόντας αὐτῇ Ἰουδαίους κλαίοντας ἐνεβριμήσατο τῷ πνεύματι καὶ ἐτάραξεν ἑαυτόν
He asked, "Where have you laid him?" They replied, "Lord, come and see."34καὶ εἶπεν Ποῦ τεθείκατε αὐτόν Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Κύριε ἔρχου καὶ ἴδε
Jesus wept.35Ἐδάκρυσεν Ἰησοῦς
Thus the people who had come to mourn said, "Look how much he loved him!"36Ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι Ἴδε πῶς ἐφίλει αὐτόν
But some of them said, "This is the man who caused the blind man to see! Couldn't he have done something to keep Lazarus from dying?" 37Τινὲς δὲ ἐξ αὐτῶν εἶπαν Οὐκ ἐδύνατο οὗτος ἀνοίξας τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς τοῦ τυφλοῦ ποιῆσαι ἵνα καὶ οὗτος μὴ ἀποθάνῃ
Jesus, intensely moved again, came to the tomb. (Now it was a cave, and a stone was placed across it.)38Ἰησοῦς οὖν πάλιν ἐμβριμώμενος ἐν ἑαυτῷ ἔρχεται εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον ἦν δὲ σπήλαιον καὶ λίθος ἐπέκειτο ἐπ’ αὐτῷ
Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the deceased, replied, "Lord, by this time the body will have a bad smell, because he has been buried four days."39λέγει Ἰησοῦς Ἄρατε τὸν λίθον Λέγει αὐτῷ ἀδελφὴ τοῦ τετελευτηκότος Μάρθα Κύριε ἤδη ὄζει τεταρταῖος γάρ ἐστιν
Jesus responded, "Didn't I tell you that if you believe, you would see the glory of God?"40Λέγει αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς Οὐκ εἶπόν σοι ὅτι ἐὰν πιστεύσῃς ὄψῃ τὴν δόξαν τοῦ Θεοῦ
So they took away the stone. Jesus looked upward and said, "Father, I thank you that you have listened to me.41Ἦραν οὖν τὸν λίθον δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἦρεν τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ἄνω καὶ εἶπεν Πάτερ εὐχαριστῶ σοι ὅτι ἤκουσάς μου
I knew that you always listen to me, but I said this for the sake of the crowd standing around here, that they may believe that you sent me."42ἐγὼ δὲ ᾔδειν ὅτι πάντοτέ μου ἀκούεις ἀλλὰ διὰ τὸν ὄχλον τὸν περιεστῶτα εἶπον ἵνα πιστεύσωσιν ὅτι σύ με ἀπέστειλας
When he had said this, he shouted in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"43Καὶ ταῦτα εἰπὼν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ἐκραύγασεν Λάζαρε δεῦρο ἔξω
The one who had died came out, his feet and hands tied up with strips of cloth, and a cloth wrapped around his face. Jesus said to them, "Unwrap him and let him go." 44ἐξῆλθεν τεθνηκὼς δεδεμένος τοὺς πόδας καὶ τὰς χεῖρας κειρίαις καὶ ὄψις αὐτοῦ σουδαρίῳ περιεδέδετο Λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Λύσατε αὐτὸν καὶ ἄφετε αὐτὸν ὑπάγειν
Then many of the people, who had come with Mary and had seen the things Jesus did, believed in him.45Πολλοὶ οὖν ἐκ τῶν Ἰουδαίων οἱ ἐλθόντες πρὸς τὴν Μαριὰμ καὶ θεασάμενοι ἃ* ἐποίησεν ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτόν
But some of them went to the Pharisees and reported to them what Jesus had done.46τινὲς δὲ ἐξ αὐτῶν ἀπῆλθον πρὸς τοὺς Φαρισαίους καὶ εἶπαν αὐτοῖς ἐποίησεν Ἰησοῦς
So the chief priests and the Pharisees called the council together and said, "What are we doing? For this man is performing many miraculous signs.47Συνήγαγον οὖν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι συνέδριον καὶ ἔλεγον Τί ποιοῦμεν ὅτι οὗτος ἄνθρωπος πολλὰ ποιεῖ σημεῖα
If we allow him to go on in this way, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away our sanctuary and our nation." 48ἐὰν ἀφῶμεν αὐτὸν οὕτως πάντες πιστεύσουσιν εἰς αὐτόν καὶ ἐλεύσονται οἱ Ῥωμαῖοι καὶ ἀροῦσιν ἡμῶν καὶ τὸν τόπον καὶ τὸ ἔθνος
Then one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said, "You know nothing at all!49Εἷς δέ τις ἐξ αὐτῶν Καϊάφας ἀρχιερεὺς ὢν τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ ἐκείνου εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε οὐδέν
You do not realize that it is more to your advantage to have one man die for the people than for the whole nation to perish."50οὐδὲ λογίζεσθε ὅτι συμφέρει ὑμῖν ἵνα εἷς ἄνθρωπος ἀποθάνῃ ὑπὲρ τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ μὴ ὅλον τὸ ἔθνος ἀπόληται
(Now he did not say this on his own, but because he was high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the Jewish nation,51Τοῦτο δὲ ἀφ’ ἑαυτοῦ οὐκ εἶπεν ἀλλὰ ἀρχιερεὺς ὢν τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ ἐκείνου ἐπροφήτευσεν ὅτι ἔμελλεν Ἰησοῦς ἀποθνήσκειν ὑπὲρ τοῦ ἔθνους
and not for the Jewish nation only, but to gather together into one the children of God who are scattered.)52καὶ οὐχ ὑπὲρ τοῦ ἔθνους μόνον ἀλλ’ ἵνα καὶ τὰ τέκνα τοῦ Θεοῦ τὰ διεσκορπισμένα συναγάγῃ εἰς ἕν
So from that day they planned together to kill him. 53Ἀπ’ ἐκείνης οὖν τῆς ἡμέρας ἐβουλεύσαντο ἵνα ἀποκτείνωσιν αὐτόν
Thus Jesus no longer went around publicly among the Judeans, but went away from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and stayed there with his disciples.54 οὖν Ἰησοῦς οὐκέτι παρρησίᾳ περιεπάτει ἐν τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις ἀλλὰ ἀπῆλθεν ἐκεῖθεν εἰς τὴν χώραν ἐγγὺς τῆς ἐρήμου εἰς Ἐφραὶμ λεγομένην πόλιν κἀκεῖ ἔμεινεν μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν
Now the Jewish feast of Passover was near, and many people went up to Jerusalem from the rural areas before the Passover to cleanse themselves ritually.55Ἦν δὲ ἐγγὺς τὸ πάσχα τῶν Ἰουδαίων καὶ ἀνέβησαν πολλοὶ εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα ἐκ τῆς χώρας πρὸ τοῦ πάσχα ἵνα ἁγνίσωσιν ἑαυτούς
Thus they were looking for Jesus, and saying to one another as they stood in the temple courts, "What do you think? That he won't come to the feast?"56ἐζήτουν οὖν τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἔλεγον μετ’ ἀλλήλων ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ἑστηκότες Τί δοκεῖ ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐ μὴ ἔλθῃ εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν
(Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who knew where Jesus was should report it, so that they could arrest him.) 57δεδώκεισαν δὲ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἐντολὰς ἵνα ἐάν τις γνῷ ποῦ ἐστιν μηνύσῃ ὅπως πιάσωσιν αὐτόν
