Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom he had raised from the dead.1 οὖν Ἰησοῦς πρὸ ἓξ ἡμερῶν τοῦ πάσχα ἦλθεν εἰς Βηθανίαν ὅπου ἦν Λάζαρος ὃν ἤγειρεν ἐκ νεκρῶν Ἰησοῦς
So they prepared a dinner for Jesus there. Martha was serving, and Lazarus was among those present at the table with him.2ἐποίησαν οὖν αὐτῷ δεῖπνον ἐκεῖ καὶ Μάρθα διηκόνει δὲ Λάζαρος εἷς ἦν ἐκ τῶν ἀνακειμένων σὺν αὐτῷ
Then Mary took three quarters of a pound of expensive aromatic oil from pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus. She then wiped his feet dry with her hair. (Now the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfumed oil.)3 οὖν Μαριὰμ λαβοῦσα λίτραν μύρου νάρδου πιστικῆς πολυτίμου ἤλειψεν τοὺς πόδας τοῦ Ἰησοῦ καὶ ἐξέμαξεν ταῖς θριξὶν αὐτῆς τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ δὲ οἰκία ἐπληρώθη ἐκ τῆς ὀσμῆς τοῦ μύρου
But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was going to betray him) said,4Λέγει δὲ Ἰούδας Ἰσκαριώτης εἷς [ἐκ] τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ μέλλων αὐτὸν παραδιδόναι
"Why wasn't this oil sold for three hundred silver coins and the money given to the poor?"5Διὰ τί τοῦτο τὸ μύρον οὐκ ἐπράθη τριακοσίων δηναρίων καὶ ἐδόθη πτωχοῖς
(Now Judas said this not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief. As keeper of the money box, he used to steal what was put into it.)6εἶπεν δὲ τοῦτο οὐχ ὅτι περὶ τῶν πτωχῶν ἔμελεν αὐτῷ ἀλλ’ ὅτι κλέπτης ἦν καὶ τὸ γλωσσόκομον ἔχων τὰ βαλλόμενα ἐβάσταζεν
So Jesus said, "Leave her alone. She has kept it for the day of my burial.7Εἶπεν οὖν Ἰησοῦς Ἄφες αὐτήν ἵνα εἰς τὴν ἡμέραν τοῦ ἐνταφιασμοῦ μου τηρήσῃ αὐτό
For you will always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me!" 8τοὺς πτωχοὺς γὰρ πάντοτε ἔχετε μεθ’ ἑαυτῶν ἐμὲ δὲ οὐ πάντοτε ἔχετε
Now a large crowd of Judeans learned that Jesus was there, and so they came not only because of him but also to see Lazarus whom he had raised from the dead.9Ἔγνω οὖν ὄχλος πολὺς ἐκ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ὅτι ἐκεῖ ἐστιν καὶ ἦλθον οὐ διὰ τὸν Ἰησοῦν μόνον ἀλλ’ ἵνα καὶ τὸν Λάζαρον ἴδωσιν ὃν ἤγειρεν ἐκ νεκρῶν
So the chief priests planned to kill Lazarus too,10ἐβουλεύσαντο δὲ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς ἵνα καὶ τὸν Λάζαρον ἀποκτείνωσιν
for on account of him many of the Jewish people from Jerusalem were going away and believing in Jesus. 11ὅτι πολλοὶ δι’ αὐτὸν ὑπῆγον τῶν Ἰουδαίων καὶ ἐπίστευον εἰς τὸν Ἰησοῦν
The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.12Τῇ ἐπαύριον ὄχλος πολὺς ἐλθὼν εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν ἀκούσαντες ὅτι ἔρχεται ‹ὁ› Ἰησοῦς εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα
So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him. They began to shout, "Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the king of Israel!"13ἔλαβον τὰ βαΐα τῶν φοινίκων καὶ ἐξῆλθον εἰς ὑπάντησιν αὐτῷ καὶ ἐκραύγαζον Ὡσαννά Εὐλογημένος ἐρχόμενος ἐν ὀνόματι Κυρίου Καὶ Βασιλεὺς τοῦ Ἰσραήλ
Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,14Εὑρὼν δὲ Ἰησοῦς ὀνάριον ἐκάθισεν ἐπ’ αὐτό καθώς ἐστιν γεγραμμένον
"Do not be afraid, people of Zion; look, your king is coming, seated on a donkey' s colt!"15Μὴ φοβοῦ θυγάτηρ Σιών ἰδοὺ Βασιλεύς σου ἔρχεται καθήμενος ἐπὶ πῶλον ὄνου
(His disciples did not understand these things when they first happened, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about him and that these things had happened to him.)
So the crowd who had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead were continuing to testify about it.17Ἐμαρτύρει οὖν ὄχλος ὢν μετ’ αὐτοῦ ὅτε τὸν Λάζαρον ἐφώνησεν ἐκ τοῦ μνημείου καὶ ἤγειρεν αὐτὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν
Because they had heard that Jesus had performed this miraculous sign, the crowd went out to meet him.18διὰ τοῦτο καὶ ὑπήντησεν αὐτῷ ὄχλος ὅτι ἤκουσαν τοῦτο αὐτὸν πεποιηκέναι τὸ σημεῖον
Thus the Pharisees said to one another, "You see that you can do nothing. Look, the world has run off after him!" 19Οἱ οὖν Φαρισαῖοι εἶπαν πρὸς ἑαυτούς Θεωρεῖτε ὅτι οὐκ ὠφελεῖτε οὐδέν ἴδε κόσμος ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ ἀπῆλθεν
Now some Greeks were among those who had gone up to worship at the feast.20Ἦσαν δὲ Ἕλληνές τινες ἐκ τῶν ἀναβαινόντων ἵνα προσκυνήσωσιν ἐν τῇ ἑορτῇ
So these approached Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and requested, "Sir, we would like to see Jesus."21οὗτοι οὖν προσῆλθον Φιλίππῳ τῷ ἀπὸ Βηθσαϊδὰ τῆς Γαλιλαίας καὶ ἠρώτων αὐτὸν λέγοντες Κύριε θέλομεν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἰδεῖν
Philip went and told Andrew, and they both went and told Jesus.22ἔρχεται Φίλιππος καὶ λέγει τῷ Ἀνδρέᾳ ἔρχεται Ἀνδρέας καὶ Φίλιππος καὶ λέγουσιν τῷ Ἰησοῦ
Jesus replied, "The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.23 δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀποκρίνεται αὐτοῖς λέγων Ἐλήλυθεν ὥρα ἵνα δοξασθῇ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
I tell you the solemn truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains by itself alone. But if it dies, it produces much grain.24ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἐὰν μὴ κόκκος τοῦ σίτου πεσὼν εἰς τὴν γῆν ἀποθάνῃ αὐτὸς μόνος μένει ἐὰν δὲ ἀποθάνῃ πολὺν καρπὸν φέρει
The one who loves his life destroys it, and the one who hates his life in this world guards it for eternal life.25 φιλῶν τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἀπολλύει αὐτήν καὶ μισῶν τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ τούτῳ εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον φυλάξει αὐτήν
If anyone wants to serve me, he must follow me, and where I am, my servant will be too. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.
"Now my soul is greatly distressed. And what should I say? 'Father, deliver me from this hour'? No, but for this very reason I have come to this hour.27Νῦν ψυχή μου τετάρακται καὶ τί εἴπω Πάτερ σῶσόν με ἐκ τῆς ὥρας ταύτης ἀλλὰ διὰ τοῦτο ἦλθον εἰς τὴν ὥραν ταύτην
Father, glorify your name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again."28Πάτερ δόξασόν σου τὸ ὄνομα Ἦλθεν οὖν φωνὴ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ Καὶ ἐδόξασα καὶ πάλιν δοξάσω
The crowd that stood there and heard the voice said that it had thundered. Others said that an angel had spoken to him.29 οὖν ὄχλος ἑστὼς καὶ ἀκούσας ἔλεγεν Βροντὴν γεγονέναι ἄλλοι ἔλεγον Ἄγγελος αὐτῷ λελάληκεν
Jesus said, "This voice has not come for my benefit but for yours.30Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν Οὐ δι’ ἐμὲ φωνὴ αὕτη γέγονεν ἀλλὰ δι’ ὑμᾶς
Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out.31νῦν κρίσις ἐστὶν τοῦ κόσμου τούτου νῦν ἄρχων τοῦ κόσμου τούτου ἐκβληθήσεται ἔξω
And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself."32κἀγὼ ἐὰν ὑψωθῶ ἐκ τῆς γῆς πάντας ἑλκύσω πρὸς ἐμαυτόν
(Now he said this to indicate clearly what kind of death he was going to die.) 33τοῦτο δὲ ἔλεγεν σημαίνων ποίῳ θανάτῳ ἤμελλεν ἀποθνήσκειν
Then the crowd responded, "We have heard from the law that the Christ will remain forever. How can you say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this Son of Man?"34Ἀπεκρίθη οὖν αὐτῷ ὄχλος Ἡμεῖς ἠκούσαμεν ἐκ τοῦ νόμου ὅτι Χριστὸς μένει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα καὶ πῶς λέγεις σὺ ὅτι δεῖ ὑψωθῆναι τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τίς ἐστιν οὗτος Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
Jesus replied, "The light is with you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, so that the darkness may not overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.35Εἶπεν οὖν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Ἔτι μικρὸν χρόνον τὸ φῶς ἐν ὑμῖν ἐστιν περιπατεῖτε ὡς τὸ φῶς ἔχετε ἵνα μὴ σκοτία ὑμᾶς καταλάβῃ καὶ περιπατῶν ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ οὐκ οἶδεν ποῦ ὑπάγει
While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become sons of light." When Jesus had said these things, he went away and hid himself from them. 36ὡς τὸ φῶς ἔχετε πιστεύετε εἰς τὸ φῶς ἵνα υἱοὶ φωτὸς γένησθε Ταῦτα ἐλάλησεν Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἀπελθὼν ἐκρύβη ἀπ’ αὐτῶν
Although Jesus had performed so many miraculous signs before them, they still refused to believe in him,37Τοσαῦτα δὲ αὐτοῦ σημεῖα πεποιηκότος ἔμπροσθεν αὐτῶν οὐκ ἐπίστευον εἰς αὐτόν
so that the word of Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled. He said, "Lord, who has believed our message, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?"38ἵνα λόγος Ἠσαΐου τοῦ προφήτου πληρωθῇ ὃν εἶπεν Κύριε τίς ἐπίστευσεν τῇ ἀκοῇ ἡμῶν καὶ βραχίων Κυρίου τίνι ἀπεκαλύφθη
For this reason they could not believe, because again Isaiah said, 39Διὰ τοῦτο οὐκ ἠδύναντο πιστεύειν ὅτι πάλιν εἶπεν Ἠσαΐας
"He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, so that they would not see with their eyes and understand with their heart, and turn to me, and I would heal them." 40Τετύφλωκεν αὐτῶν τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς καὶ ἐπώρωσεν αὐτῶν τὴν καρδίαν ἵνα μὴ ἴδωσιν τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς καὶ νοήσωσιν τῇ καρδίᾳ καὶ στραφῶσιν καὶ ἰάσομαι αὐτούς
Isaiah said these things because he saw Christ's glory, and spoke about him. 41Ταῦτα εἶπεν Ἠσαΐας ὅτι εἶδεν τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐλάλησεν περὶ αὐτοῦ
Nevertheless, even among the rulers many believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they would not confess Jesus to be the Christ, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue.42ὅμως μέντοι καὶ ἐκ τῶν ἀρχόντων πολλοὶ ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτόν ἀλλὰ διὰ τοὺς Φαρισαίους οὐχ ὡμολόγουν ἵνα μὴ ἀποσυνάγωγοι γένωνται
For they loved praise from men more than praise from God. 43ἠγάπησαν γὰρ τὴν δόξαν τῶν ἀνθρώπων μᾶλλον ἤπερ τὴν δόξαν τοῦ Θεοῦ
But Jesus shouted out, "The one who believes in me does not believe in me, but in the one who sent me,44Ἰησοῦς δὲ ἔκραξεν καὶ εἶπεν πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ οὐ πιστεύει εἰς ἐμὲ ἀλλὰ εἰς τὸν πέμψαντά με
and the one who sees me sees the one who sent me.45καὶ θεωρῶν ἐμὲ θεωρεῖ τὸν πέμψαντά με
I have come as a light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in darkness.46ἐγὼ φῶς εἰς τὸν κόσμον ἐλήλυθα ἵνα πᾶς πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ μὴ μείνῃ
If anyone hears my words and does not obey them, I do not judge him. For I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world.47Καὶ ἐάν τίς μου ἀκούσῃ τῶν ῥημάτων καὶ μὴ φυλάξῃ ἐγὼ οὐ κρίνω αὐτόν οὐ γὰρ ἦλθον ἵνα κρίνω τὸν κόσμον ἀλλ’ ἵνα σώσω τὸν κόσμον
The one who rejects me and does not accept my words has a judge; the word I have spoken will judge him at the last day.48 ἀθετῶν ἐμὲ καὶ μὴ λαμβάνων τὰ ῥήματά μου ἔχει τὸν κρίνοντα αὐτόν λόγος ὃν ἐλάλησα ἐκεῖνος κρινεῖ αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ
For I have not spoken from my own authority, but the Father himself who sent me has commanded me what I should say and what I should speak.49Ὅτι ἐγὼ ἐξ ἐμαυτοῦ οὐκ ἐλάλησα ἀλλ’ πέμψας με Πατὴρ αὐτός μοι ἐντολὴν δέδωκεν τί εἴπω καὶ τί λαλήσω
And I know that his commandment is eternal life. Thus the things I say, I say just as the Father has told me." 50καὶ οἶδα ὅτι ἐντολὴ αὐτοῦ ζωὴ αἰώνιός ἐστιν οὖν ἐγὼ λαλῶ καθὼς εἴρηκέν μοι Πατήρ οὕτως λαλῶ
