| 1Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom he had raised from the dead. | 1Six days before the Passover celebration began, Jesus arrived in Bethany, the home of Lazarus—the man he had raised from the dead. |
| 2So they prepared a dinner for Jesus there. Martha was serving, and Lazarus was among those present at the table with him. | 2A dinner was prepared in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those who ate with him. |
| 3Then Mary took three quarters of a pound of expensive aromatic oil from pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus. She then wiped his feet dry with her hair. (Now the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfumed oil.) | 3Then Mary took a twelve-ounce jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet with it, wiping his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance. |
| 4But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was going to betray him) said, | 4But Judas Iscariot, the disciple who would soon betray him, said, |
| 5"Why wasn't this oil sold for three hundred silver coins and the money given to the poor?" | 5“That perfume was worth a year’s wages. It should have been sold and the money given to the poor.” |
| 6(Now Judas said this not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief. As keeper of the money box, he used to steal what was put into it.) | 6Not that he cared for the poor—he was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciples’ money, he often stole some for himself. |
| 7So Jesus said, "Leave her alone. She has kept it for the day of my burial. | 7Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. She did this in preparation for my burial. |
| 8For you will always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me!" | 8 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.” |
| 9Now a large crowd of Judeans learned that Jesus was there, and so they came not only because of him but also to see Lazarus whom he had raised from the dead. | 9When all the people heard of Jesus’ arrival, they flocked to see him and also to see Lazarus, the man Jesus had raised from the dead. |
| 10So the chief priests planned to kill Lazarus too, | 10Then the leading priests decided to kill Lazarus, too, |

| 13So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him. They began to shout, "Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! | 14Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, | 14Jesus found a young donkey and rode on it, fulfilling the prophecy that said: |
| 15"Do not be afraid, people of Zion; look, your king is coming, seated on a donkey' s colt!" | 15“Don’t be afraid, people of Jerusalem. Look, your King is coming, riding on a donkey’s colt.” |
| 16(His disciples did not understand these things when they first happened, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about him and that these things had happened to him.) | 16His disciples didn’t understand at the time that this was a fulfillment of prophecy. But after Jesus entered into his glory, they remembered what had happened and realized that these things had been written about him. |
| 17So the crowd who had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead were continuing to testify about it. | 17Many in the crowd had seen Jesus call Lazarus from the tomb, raising him from the dead, and they were telling others about it. |
| 18Because they had heard that Jesus had performed this miraculous sign, the crowd went out to meet him. | 18That was the reason so many went out to meet him—because they had heard about this miraculous sign. |
| 19Thus the Pharisees said to one another, "You see that you can do nothing. Look, the world has run off after him!" | 19Then the Pharisees said to each other, “There’s nothing we can do. Look, everyone has gone after him!” Jesus Predicts His Death |
| 20Now some Greeks were among those who had gone up to worship at the feast. | 20Some Greeks who had come to Jerusalem for the Passover celebration |
| 21So these approached Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and requested, "Sir, we would like to see Jesus." | 21paid a visit to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee. They said, “Sir, we want to meet Jesus.” |
| 22Philip went and told Andrew, and they both went and told Jesus. | 22Philip told Andrew about it, and they went together to ask Jesus. |

| 24I tell you the solemn truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains by itself alone. But if it dies, it produces much grain. | 24 I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful harvest of new lives. |
| 25The one who loves his life destroys it, and the one who hates his life in this world guards it for eternal life. | 25 Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity. |
| 26If anyone wants to serve me, he must follow me, and where I am, my servant will be too. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. | 26 Anyone who wants to serve me must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me. |
| 27"Now my soul is greatly distressed. And what should I say? 'Father, deliver me from this hour'? No, but for this very reason I have come to this hour. | 27 “Now my soul is deeply troubled. Should I pray, ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But this is the very reason I came! |
| 28Father, glorify your name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again." | 28 Father, bring glory to your name.” Then a voice spoke from heaven, saying, “I have already brought glory to my name, and I will do so again.” |
| 29The crowd that stood there and heard the voice said that it had thundered. Others said that an angel had spoken to him. | 29When the crowd heard the voice, some thought it was thunder, while others declared an angel had spoken to him. |
| 30Jesus said, "This voice has not come for my benefit but for yours. | 30Then Jesus told them, “The voice was for your benefit, not mine. |
| 31Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. | 31 The time for judging this world has come, when Satan, the ruler of this world, will be cast out. |
| 32And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself." | 32 And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself.” |
| 33(Now he said this to indicate clearly what kind of death he was going to die.) | 33He said this to indicate how he was going to die. |
| 34Then the crowd responded, "We have heard from the law that the Christ will remain forever. How can you say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this Son of Man?" | 34The crowd responded, “We understood from Scripture that the Messiah would live forever. How can you say the Son of Man will die? Just who is this Son of Man, anyway?” |
| 35Jesus replied, "The light is with you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, so that the darkness may not overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. | 35Jesus replied, “My light will shine for you just a little longer. Walk in the light while you can, so the darkness will not overtake you. Those who walk in the darkness cannot see where they are going. |
| 36While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become sons of light." When Jesus had said these things, he went away and hid himself from them. | 36 Put your trust in the light while there is still time; then you will become children of the light.” After saying these things, Jesus went away and was hidden from them. | 37Although Jesus had performed so many miraculous signs before them, they still refused to believe in him, | 37But despite all the miraculous signs Jesus had done, most of the people still did not believe in him. |
| 38so that the word of Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled. He said, "Lord, who has believed our message, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?" | 38This is exactly what Isaiah the prophet had predicted: “LORD, who has believed our message? To whom has the LORD revealed his powerful arm?” |
| 39For this reason they could not believe, because again Isaiah said, | 39But the people couldn’t believe, for as Isaiah also said, |
| 40"He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, so that they would not see with their eyes and understand with their heart, and turn to me, and I would heal them." | 40“The Lord has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts— so that their eyes cannot see, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to me and have me heal them.” |
| 41Isaiah said these things because he saw Christ's glory, and spoke about him. | 41Isaiah was referring to Jesus when he said this, because he saw the future and spoke of the Messiah’s glory. |
| 42Nevertheless, even among the rulers many believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they would not confess Jesus to be the Christ, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue. | 42Many people did believe in him, however, including some of the Jewish leaders. But they wouldn’t admit it for fear that the Pharisees would expel them from the synagogue. |
| 43For they loved praise from men more than praise from God. | 43For they loved human praise more than the praise of God. |
| 44But Jesus shouted out, "The one who believes in me does not believe in me, but in the one who sent me, | 44Jesus shouted to the crowds, “If you trust me, you are trusting not only me, but also God who sent me. |
| 45and the one who sees me sees the one who sent me. | 45 For when you see me, you are seeing the one who sent me. |
| 46I have come as a light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in darkness. | 46 I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark. |
| 47If anyone hears my words and does not obey them, I do not judge him. For I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world. | 47 I will not judge those who hear me but don’t obey me, for I have come to save the world and not to judge it. |
| 48The one who rejects me and does not accept my words has a judge; the word I have spoken will judge him at the last day. | 48 But all who reject me and my message will be judged on the day of judgment by the truth I have spoken. |
| 49For I have not spoken from my own authority, but the Father himself who sent me has commanded me what I should say and what I should speak. | 49 I don’t speak on my own authority. The Father who sent me has commanded me what to say and how to say it. |
| 50And I know that his commandment is eternal life. Thus the things I say, I say just as the Father has told me." | 50 And I know his commands lead to eternal life; so I say whatever the Father tells me to say.” |
