1When [Jesus] had concluded His discourse in the hearing of the people, He went to Capernaum. 1Ἐπειδὴ ἐπλήρωσεν πάντα τὰ ῥήματα αὐτοῦ εἰς τὰς ἀκοὰς τοῦ λαοῦ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς Καφαρναούμ
2[There] a highly valued servant of a centurion was sick [and] about to die. 2Ἑκατοντάρχου δέ τινος δοῦλος κακῶς ἔχων ἤμελλεν τελευτᾶν ὃς ἦν αὐτῷ ἔντιμος
3When [the centurion] heard about Jesus, he sent [some] Jewish elders to ask Him to come [and] heal his servant. 3ἀκούσας δὲ περὶ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς αὐτὸν πρεσβυτέρους τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἐρωτῶν αὐτὸν ὅπως ἐλθὼν διασώσῃ τὸν δοῦλον αὐτοῦ
4They came to Jesus [and] pleaded with Him earnestly, “[This man] is worthy to have You grant this, 4οἱ δὲ παραγενόμενοι πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν παρεκάλουν αὐτὸν σπουδαίως λέγοντες ὅτι Ἄξιός ἐστιν ᾧ παρέξῃ τοῦτο
5for he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.” 5ἀγαπᾷ γὰρ τὸ ἔθνος ἡμῶν καὶ τὴν συναγωγὴν αὐτὸς ᾠκοδόμησεν ἡμῖν
6So Jesus went with them. But when He was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends with the message: “Lord, {do} not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy to have You come under my roof. 6Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἐπορεύετο σὺν αὐτοῖς ἤδη δὲ αὐτοῦ οὐ μακρὰν ἀπέχοντος ἀπὸ τῆς οἰκίας ἔπεμψεν φίλους ὁ ἑκατοντάρχης λέγων αὐτῷ Κύριε μὴ σκύλλου οὐ γὰρ ἱκανός εἰμι ἵνα ὑπὸ τὴν στέγην μου εἰσέλθῃς
7That is why I did not consider myself worthy to come to You. But [just] say [the] word, and my servant will be healed. 7διὸ οὐδὲ ἐμαυτὸν ἠξίωσα πρὸς σὲ ἐλθεῖν ἀλλὰ εἰπὲ λόγῳ καὶ ἰαθήτω ὁ παῖς μου
8For I [myself] am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell [one] to go, and he goes; and another to come, and he comes. [I tell] my servant to do [something], and he does [it].” 8καὶ γὰρ ἐγὼ ἄνθρωπός εἰμι ὑπὸ ἐξουσίαν τασσόμενος ἔχων ὑπ’ ἐμαυτὸν στρατιώτας καὶ λέγω τούτῳ Πορεύθητι καὶ πορεύεται καὶ ἄλλῳ Ἔρχου καὶ ἔρχεται καὶ τῷ δούλῳ μου Ποίησον τοῦτο καὶ ποιεῖ
9[When] [Jesus] heard [this], [He] was amazed at [the centurion]. Turning to the crowd following Him, He said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith!” 9Ἀκούσας δὲ ταῦτα ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐθαύμασεν αὐτόν καὶ στραφεὶς τῷ ἀκολουθοῦντι αὐτῷ ὄχλῳ εἶπεν Λέγω ὑμῖν οὐδὲ ἐν τῷ Ἰσραὴλ τοσαύτην πίστιν εὗρον
10And [when] the messengers returned to the house, they found the servant in good health. 10καὶ ὑποστρέψαντες εἰς τὸν οἶκον οἱ πεμφθέντες εὗρον τὸν δοῦλον ὑγιαίνοντα
11Soon afterward, [Jesus] went to a town called Nain. His disciples went with Him, accompanied by a large crowd. 11Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ἑξῆς ἐπορεύθη εἰς πόλιν καλουμένην Ναΐν καὶ συνεπορεύοντο αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ὄχλος πολύς
12As He approached the town gate, He saw a dead man being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a sizeable crowd from the town was with her. 12ὡς δὲ ἤγγισεν τῇ πύλῃ τῆς πόλεως καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐξεκομίζετο τεθνηκὼς μονογενὴς υἱὸς τῇ μητρὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ αὐτὴ ἦν χήρα καὶ ὄχλος τῆς πόλεως ἱκανὸς ἦν σὺν αὐτῇ
13When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said, “{Do} not weep.” 13καὶ ἰδὼν αὐτὴν ὁ Κύριος ἐσπλαγχνίσθη ἐπ’ αὐτῇ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Μὴ κλαῖε
14Then He went up [and] touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. “Young man,” He said, “I tell you, get up!” 14Καὶ προσελθὼν ἥψατο τῆς σοροῦ οἱ δὲ βαστάζοντες ἔστησαν καὶ εἶπεν Νεανίσκε σοὶ λέγω ἐγέρθητι
15And the dead [man] sat up and began to speak! Then [Jesus] gave him {back} to his mother. 15καὶ ἀνεκάθισεν ὁ νεκρὸς καὶ ἤρξατο λαλεῖν καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτὸν τῇ μητρὶ αὐτοῦ
16A sense of awe swept over all [of them], and they glorified God. “A great prophet has appeared among us!” they said. “God has visited His people!” 16Ἔλαβεν δὲ φόβος πάντας καὶ ἐδόξαζον τὸν Θεὸν λέγοντες ὅτι Προφήτης μέγας ἠγέρθη ἐν ἡμῖν καὶ ὅτι Ἐπεσκέψατο ὁ Θεὸς τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ
17And [the] news about [Jesus] spread throughout Judea and all the surrounding region. 17καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὁ λόγος οὗτος ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ περὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ πάσῃ τῇ περιχώρῳ
18Then [John’s] disciples informed [him] about all these things. 18Καὶ ἀπήγγειλαν Ἰωάννῃ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ περὶ πάντων τούτων
19So John called two of his disciples [and] sent [them] to ask the Lord, “Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?” 19καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος δύο τινὰς τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ ὁ Ἰωάννης ἔπεμψεν πρὸς τὸν Κύριον λέγων Σὺ εἶ ὁ ἐρχόμενος ἢ ἄλλον προσδοκῶμεν
20The men came to [Jesus] [and] said, “John the Baptist sent us to ask, ‘Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?’” 20Παραγενόμενοι δὲ πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ ἄνδρες εἶπαν Ἰωάννης ὁ Βαπτιστὴς ἀπέστειλεν ἡμᾶς πρὸς σὲ λέγων Σὺ εἶ ὁ ἐρχόμενος ἢ ἄλλον προσδοκῶμεν
21At that very hour [Jesus] healed many [people] of [their] diseases, afflictions, and evil spirits, and He gave sight to many [who were] blind. 21Ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ὥρᾳ ἐθεράπευσεν πολλοὺς ἀπὸ νόσων καὶ μαστίγων καὶ πνευμάτων πονηρῶν καὶ τυφλοῖς πολλοῖς ἐχαρίσατο βλέπειν
22So He replied, “Go [back] [and] report to John what you have seen and heard: [The] blind receive sight, [the] lame walk, [the] lepers are cleansed, [the] deaf hear, [the] dead are raised, [and the] good news is preached [to the] poor. 22καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Πορευθέντες ἀπαγγείλατε Ἰωάννῃ ἃ εἴδετε καὶ ἠκούσατε τυφλοὶ ἀναβλέπουσιν χωλοὶ περιπατοῦσιν λεπροὶ καθαρίζονται καὶ κωφοὶ ἀκούουσιν νεκροὶ ἐγείρονται πτωχοὶ εὐαγγελίζονται
23Blessed is the [one who] does not fall away on account of Me.” 23καὶ μακάριός ἐστιν ὃς ἐὰν μὴ σκανδαλισθῇ ἐν ἐμοί
24After John’s messengers had left, [Jesus] began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in [the] wind? 24Ἀπελθόντων δὲ τῶν ἀγγέλων Ἰωάννου ἤρξατο λέγειν πρὸς τοὺς ὄχλους περὶ Ἰωάννου Τί ἐξήλθατε εἰς τὴν ἔρημον θεάσασθαι κάλαμον ὑπὸ ἀνέμου σαλευόμενον
25If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? Look, those who [wear] elegant clothing and live in luxury are found in palaces. 25ἀλλὰ τί ἐξήλθατε ἰδεῖν ἄνθρωπον ἐν μαλακοῖς ἱματίοις ἠμφιεσμένον ἰδοὺ οἱ ἐν ἱματισμῷ ἐνδόξῳ καὶ τρυφῇ ὑπάρχοντες ἐν τοῖς βασιλείοις εἰσίν
26But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 26Ἀλλὰ τί ἐξήλθατε ἰδεῖν προφήτην ναί λέγω ὑμῖν καὶ περισσότερον προφήτου
27This is the one about whom it is written: ‘Behold, I will send My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way before You.’ 27οὗτός ἐστιν περὶ οὗ γέγραπται Ἰδοὺ ἀποστέλλω τὸν ἄγγελόν μου πρὸ προσώπου σου Ὃς κατασκευάσει τὴν ὁδόν σου ἔμπροσθέν σου
28I tell you, among [those] born of women there is no one greater than John, yet even the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” 28Λέγω ὑμῖν μείζων ἐν γεννητοῖς γυναικῶν Ἰωάννου οὐδείς ἐστιν ὁ δὲ μικρότερος ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τοῦ Θεοῦ μείζων αὐτοῦ ἐστιν
29All the people [who] heard [this], even the tax collectors, acknowledged God’s justice. [For] they had received the baptism of John. 29Καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ἀκούσας καὶ οἱ τελῶναι ἐδικαίωσαν τὸν Θεόν βαπτισθέντες τὸ βάπτισμα Ἰωάννου
30But the Pharisees and experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, [because] {they had} not been baptized by [John]. 30οἱ δὲ Φαρισαῖοι καὶ οἱ νομικοὶ τὴν βουλὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἠθέτησαν εἰς ἑαυτούς μὴ βαπτισθέντες ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ
31“To what, then, can I compare the men of this generation? What are they like? 31Τίνι οὖν ὁμοιώσω τοὺς ἀνθρώπους τῆς γενεᾶς ταύτης καὶ τίνι εἰσὶν ὅμοιοι
32They are like children sitting in [the] marketplace and calling out to one another: ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’ 32ὅμοιοί εἰσιν παιδίοις τοῖς ἐν ἀγορᾷ καθημένοις καὶ προσφωνοῦσιν ἀλλήλοις ἃ λέγει Ηὐλήσαμεν ὑμῖν καὶ οὐκ ὠρχήσασθε Ἐθρηνήσαμεν καὶ οὐκ ἐκλαύσατε
33For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon!’ 33Ἐλήλυθεν γὰρ Ἰωάννης ὁ Βαπτιστὴς μὴ ἐσθίων ἄρτον μήτε πίνων οἶνον καὶ λέγετε Δαιμόνιον ἔχει
34The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look [at this] glutton and drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and of sinners!’ 34ἐλήλυθεν ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐσθίων καὶ πίνων καὶ λέγετε Ἰδοὺ ἄνθρωπος φάγος καὶ οἰνοπότης φίλος τελωνῶν καὶ ἁμαρτωλῶν
35But wisdom is vindicated by all her children.” 35καὶ ἐδικαιώθη ἡ σοφία ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν τέκνων αὐτῆς
36Then one of the Pharisees invited [Jesus] to eat with him, and He entered the Pharisee’s house [and] reclined at the table. 36Ἠρώτα δέ τις αὐτὸν τῶν Φαρισαίων ἵνα φάγῃ μετ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἰσελθὼν εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ Φαρισαίου κατεκλίθη
37When a sinful woman from [that] town learned that [Jesus] was dining [there], she brought an alabaster jar of perfume. 37καὶ ἰδοὺ γυνὴ ἥτις ἦν ἐν τῇ πόλει ἁμαρτωλός καὶ ἐπιγνοῦσα ὅτι κατάκειται ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ τοῦ Φαρισαίου κομίσασα ἀλάβαστρον μύρου
38[As] she stood behind Him at His feet weeping, she began to wet His feet with [her] tears and wipe [them] with her hair. Then she kissed His feet and anointed [them] with the perfume. 38καὶ στᾶσα ὀπίσω παρὰ τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ κλαίουσα τοῖς δάκρυσιν ἤρξατο βρέχειν τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ καὶ ταῖς θριξὶν τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτῆς ἐξέμασσεν καὶ κατεφίλει τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ καὶ ἤλειφεν τῷ μύρῳ
39When the Pharisee who had invited [Jesus] saw [this], he said to himself, “If this [man] were a prophet, He would know who [this is] and what kind of woman is touching Him— for she is a sinner!” 39Ἰδὼν δὲ ὁ Φαρισαῖος ὁ καλέσας αὐτὸν εἶπεν ἐν ἑαυτῷ λέγων Οὗτος εἰ ἦν (ὁ) προφήτης ἐγίνωσκεν ἂν τίς καὶ ποταπὴ ἡ γυνὴ ἥτις ἅπτεται αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἁμαρτωλός ἐστιν
40But Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.” “Tell [me], Teacher,” he said. 40Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτόν Σίμων ἔχω σοί τι εἰπεῖν Ὁ δέ Διδάσκαλε εἰπέ φησίν
41“Two [men] were debtors to a certain moneylender. One owed [him] five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 41Δύο χρεοφειλέται ἦσαν δανιστῇ τινι ὁ εἷς ὤφειλεν δηνάρια πεντακόσια ὁ δὲ ἕτερος πεντήκοντα
42[When] they were unable to repay [him], he forgave both [of them]. Which [one], then, will love him more?” 42μὴ ἐχόντων αὐτῶν ἀποδοῦναι ἀμφοτέροις ἐχαρίσατο τίς οὖν αὐτῶν πλεῖον ἀγαπήσει αὐτόν
43“I suppose the [one who] was forgiven more,” Simon replied. “You have judged correctly.” [Jesus] said. 43Ἀποκριθεὶς Σίμων εἶπεν Ὑπολαμβάνω ὅτι ᾧ τὸ πλεῖον ἐχαρίσατο Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ὀρθῶς ἔκρινας
44And turning to the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? [When] I entered your house, you did not give [Me] water for My feet, but she wet My feet with her tears and wiped [them] with her hair. 44Καὶ στραφεὶς πρὸς τὴν γυναῖκα τῷ Σίμωνι ἔφη Βλέπεις ταύτην τὴν γυναῖκα εἰσῆλθόν σου εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν ὕδωρ μοι ἐπὶ πόδας οὐκ ἔδωκας αὕτη δὲ τοῖς δάκρυσιν ἔβρεξέν μου τοὺς πόδας καὶ ταῖς θριξὶν αὐτῆς ἐξέμαξεν
45You did not greet Me with a kiss, but she has not stopped kissing My feet since I arrived. 45φίλημά μοι οὐκ ἔδωκας αὕτη δὲ ἀφ’ ἧς εἰσῆλθον οὐ διέλιπεν καταφιλοῦσά μου τοὺς πόδας
46You did not anoint My head with oil, but she has anointed My feet with perfume. 46ἐλαίῳ τὴν κεφαλήν μου οὐκ ἤλειψας αὕτη δὲ μύρῳ ἤλειψεν τοὺς πόδας μου
47Therefore I tell you, because her many sins have been forgiven, she has loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little.” 47οὗ χάριν λέγω σοι ἀφέωνται αἱ ἁμαρτίαι αὐτῆς αἱ πολλαί ὅτι ἠγάπησεν πολύ ᾧ δὲ ὀλίγον ἀφίεται ὀλίγον ἀγαπᾷ
48Then [Jesus] said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” 48Εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῇ Ἀφέωνταί σου αἱ ἁμαρτίαι
49But those at the table began to say to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” 49Καὶ ἤρξαντο οἱ συνανακείμενοι λέγειν ἐν ἑαυτοῖς Τίς οὗτός ἐστιν ὃς καὶ ἁμαρτίας ἀφίησιν
50And [Jesus] told the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” 50Εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς τὴν γυναῖκα Ἡ πίστις σου σέσωκέν σε πορεύου εἰς εἰρήνην
