Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany where Lazarus was, the one Jesus had raised from the dead.1 οὖν Ἰησοῦς πρὸ ἓξ ἡμερῶν τοῦ πάσχα ἦλθεν εἰς Βηθανίαν ὅπου ἦν Λάζαρος ὃν ἤγειρεν ἐκ νεκρῶν Ἰησοῦς
So they gave a dinner for Him there; Martha was serving them, and Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him. 2ἐποίησαν οὖν αὐτῷ δεῖπνον ἐκεῖ καὶ Μάρθα διηκόνει δὲ Λάζαρος εἷς ἦν ἐκ τῶν ἀνακειμένων σὺν αὐτῷ
Then Mary took a pound of fragrant oil--pure and expensive nard--anointed Jesus' feet, and wiped His feet with her hair. So the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.
Then one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot (who was about to betray Him), said, "4Λέγει δὲ Ἰούδας Ἰσκαριώτης εἷς [ἐκ] τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ μέλλων αὐτὸν παραδιδόναι
Why wasn't this fragrant oil sold for 300 denarii and given to the poor?"5Διὰ τί τοῦτο τὸ μύρον οὐκ ἐπράθη τριακοσίων δηναρίων καὶ ἐδόθη πτωχοῖς
He didn't say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief. He was in charge of the money-bag and would steal part of what was put in it. 6εἶπεν δὲ τοῦτο οὐχ ὅτι περὶ τῶν πτωχῶν ἔμελεν αὐτῷ ἀλλ’ ὅτι κλέπτης ἦν καὶ τὸ γλωσσόκομον ἔχων τὰ βαλλόμενα ἐβάσταζεν
Jesus answered, "Leave her alone; she has kept it for the day of My burial.7Εἶπεν οὖν Ἰησοῦς Ἄφες αὐτήν ἵνα εἰς τὴν ἡμέραν τοῦ ἐνταφιασμοῦ μου τηρήσῃ αὐτό
For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me." 8τοὺς πτωχοὺς γὰρ πάντοτε ἔχετε μεθ’ ἑαυτῶν ἐμὲ δὲ οὐ πάντοτε ἔχετε
Then a large crowd of the Jews learned He was there. They came not only because of Jesus, but also to see Lazarus the one He had raised from the dead.9Ἔγνω οὖν ὄχλος πολὺς ἐκ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ὅτι ἐκεῖ ἐστιν καὶ ἦλθον οὐ διὰ τὸν Ἰησοῦν μόνον ἀλλ’ ἵνα καὶ τὸν Λάζαρον ἴδωσιν ὃν ἤγειρεν ἐκ νεκρῶν
Therefore the chief priests decided to kill Lazarus also10ἐβουλεύσαντο δὲ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς ἵνα καὶ τὸν Λάζαρον ἀποκτείνωσιν
because he was the reason many of the Jews were deserting them and believing in Jesus.
The next day, when the large crowd that had come to the festival heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 12Τῇ ἐπαύριον ὄχλος πολὺς ἐλθὼν εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν ἀκούσαντες ὅτι ἔρχεται ‹ὁ› Ἰησοῦς εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα
they took palm branches and went out to meet Him. They kept shouting: "Hosanna! He who comes in the name of the Lord is the blessed One--the King of Israel!" 13ἔλαβον τὰ βαΐα τῶν φοινίκων καὶ ἐξῆλθον εἰς ὑπάντησιν αὐτῷ καὶ ἐκραύγαζον Ὡσαννά Εὐλογημένος ἐρχόμενος ἐν ὀνόματι Κυρίου Καὶ Βασιλεὺς τοῦ Ἰσραήλ
Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written: 14Εὑρὼν δὲ Ἰησοῦς ὀνάριον ἐκάθισεν ἐπ’ αὐτό καθώς ἐστιν γεγραμμένον
Fear no more, Daughter Zion. Look, your King is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt.
His disciples did not understand these things at first. However, when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about Him and that they had done these things to Him.
Meanwhile, the crowd, which had been with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, continued to testify.17Ἐμαρτύρει οὖν ὄχλος ὢν μετ’ αὐτοῦ ὅτε τὸν Λάζαρον ἐφώνησεν ἐκ τοῦ μνημείου καὶ ἤγειρεν αὐτὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν
This is also why the crowd met Him, because they heard He had done this sign.
Then the Pharisees said to one another, "You see? You've accomplished nothing. Look--the world has gone after Him!" 19Οἱ οὖν Φαρισαῖοι εἶπαν πρὸς ἑαυτούς Θεωρεῖτε ὅτι οὐκ ὠφελεῖτε οὐδέν ἴδε κόσμος ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ ἀπῆλθεν
Now some Greeks were among those who went up to worship at the festival.
So they came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and requested of him, "Sir, we want to see Jesus." 21οὗτοι οὖν προσῆλθον Φιλίππῳ τῷ ἀπὸ Βηθσαϊδὰ τῆς Γαλιλαίας καὶ ἠρώτων αὐτὸν λέγοντες Κύριε θέλομεν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἰδεῖν
Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus.
Jesus replied to them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 23 δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀποκρίνεται αὐτοῖς λέγων Ἐλήλυθεν ὥρα ἵνα δοξασθῇ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
"I assure you: Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains by itself. But if it dies, it produces a large crop. 24ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἐὰν μὴ κόκκος τοῦ σίτου πεσὼν εἰς τὴν γῆν ἀποθάνῃ αὐτὸς μόνος μένει ἐὰν δὲ ἀποθάνῃ πολὺν καρπὸν φέρει
The one who loves his life will lose it, and the one who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me. Where I am, there My servant also will be. If anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.
"Now My soul is troubled. What should I say--Father, save Me from this hour? But that is why I came to this hour. 27Νῦν ψυχή μου τετάρακται καὶ τί εἴπω Πάτερ σῶσόν με ἐκ τῆς ὥρας ταύτης ἀλλὰ διὰ τοῦτο ἦλθον εἰς τὴν ὥραν ταύτην
Father, glorify Your name!" Then a voice came from heaven: "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again!" 28Πάτερ δόξασόν σου τὸ ὄνομα Ἦλθεν οὖν φωνὴ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ Καὶ ἐδόξασα καὶ πάλιν δοξάσω
The crowd standing there heard it and said it was thunder. Others said that an angel had spoken to Him. 29 οὖν ὄχλος ἑστὼς καὶ ἀκούσας ἔλεγεν Βροντὴν γεγονέναι ἄλλοι ἔλεγον Ἄγγελος αὐτῷ λελάληκεν
Jesus responded, "This voice came, not for Me, but for you.30Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν Οὐ δι’ ἐμὲ φωνὴ αὕτη γέγονεν ἀλλὰ δι’ ὑμᾶς
Now is the judgment of this world. Now the ruler of this world will be cast out.31νῦν κρίσις ἐστὶν τοῦ κόσμου τούτου νῦν ἄρχων τοῦ κόσμου τούτου ἐκβληθήσεται ἔξω
As for Me, if I am lifted up from the earth I will draw all people to Myself."32κἀγὼ ἐὰν ὑψωθῶ ἐκ τῆς γῆς πάντας ἑλκύσω πρὸς ἐμαυτόν
He said this to signify what kind of death He was about to die.
Then the crowd replied to Him, "We have heard from the scripture that the Messiah will remain forever. So how can You say, The Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?" 34Ἀπεκρίθη οὖν αὐτῷ ὄχλος Ἡμεῖς ἠκούσαμεν ἐκ τοῦ νόμου ὅτι Χριστὸς μένει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα καὶ πῶς λέγεις σὺ ὅτι δεῖ ὑψωθῆναι τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τίς ἐστιν οὗτος Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
Jesus answered, "The light will be with you only a little longer. Walk while you have the light so that darkness doesn't overtake you. The one who walks in darkness doesn't know where he's going.35Εἶπεν οὖν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Ἔτι μικρὸν χρόνον τὸ φῶς ἐν ὑμῖν ἐστιν περιπατεῖτε ὡς τὸ φῶς ἔχετε ἵνα μὴ σκοτία ὑμᾶς καταλάβῃ καὶ περιπατῶν ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ οὐκ οἶδεν ποῦ ὑπάγει
While you have the light, believe in the light so that you may become sons of light." Jesus said this, then went away and hid from them. 36ὡς τὸ φῶς ἔχετε πιστεύετε εἰς τὸ φῶς ἵνα υἱοὶ φωτὸς γένησθε Ταῦτα ἐλάλησεν Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἀπελθὼν ἐκρύβη ἀπ’ αὐτῶν
Even though He had performed so many signs in their presence, they did not believe in Him. 37Τοσαῦτα δὲ αὐτοῦ σημεῖα πεποιηκότος ἔμπροσθεν αὐτῶν οὐκ ἐπίστευον εἰς αὐτόν
But this was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet, who said: Lord, who has believed our message? And who has the arm of the Lord been revealed to? 38ἵνα λόγος Ἠσαΐου τοῦ προφήτου πληρωθῇ ὃν εἶπεν Κύριε τίς ἐπίστευσεν τῇ ἀκοῇ ἡμῶν καὶ βραχίων Κυρίου τίνι ἀπεκαλύφθη
This is why they were unable to believe, because Isaiah also said: 39Διὰ τοῦτο οὐκ ἠδύναντο πιστεύειν ὅτι πάλιν εἶπεν Ἠσαΐας
He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so that they would not see with their eyes or understand with their hearts, and be converted, and I would heal them.
Isaiah said these things because he saw His glory and spoke about Him. 41Ταῦτα εἶπεν Ἠσαΐας ὅτι εἶδεν τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐλάλησεν περὶ αὐτοῦ
Nevertheless, many did believe in Him even among the rulers, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, so they would not be banned from the synagogue.
For they loved praise from men more than praise from God.
Then Jesus cried out, "The one who believes in Me believes not in Me, but in Him who sent Me. 44Ἰησοῦς δὲ ἔκραξεν καὶ εἶπεν πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ οὐ πιστεύει εἰς ἐμὲ ἀλλὰ εἰς τὸν πέμψαντά με
And the one who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. 45καὶ θεωρῶν ἐμὲ θεωρεῖ τὸν πέμψαντά με
I have come as a light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me would not remain in darkness.
If anyone hears My words and doesn't keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.47Καὶ ἐάν τίς μου ἀκούσῃ τῶν ῥημάτων καὶ μὴ φυλάξῃ ἐγὼ οὐ κρίνω αὐτόν οὐ γὰρ ἦλθον ἵνα κρίνω τὸν κόσμον ἀλλ’ ἵνα σώσω τὸν κόσμον
The one who rejects Me and doesn't accept My sayings has this as his judge: The word I have spoken will judge him on the last day.48 ἀθετῶν ἐμὲ καὶ μὴ λαμβάνων τὰ ῥήματά μου ἔχει τὸν κρίνοντα αὐτόν λόγος ὃν ἐλάλησα ἐκεῖνος κρινεῖ αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ
For I have not spoken on My own, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me a command as to what I should say and what I should speak.
I know that His command is eternal life. So the things that I speak, I speak just as the Father has told Me." 50καὶ οἶδα ὅτι ἐντολὴ αὐτοῦ ζωὴ αἰώνιός ἐστιν οὖν ἐγὼ λαλῶ καθὼς εἴρηκέν μοι Πατήρ οὕτως λαλῶ
