1As Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through it,

1Καὶ εἰσελθὼν διήρχετο τὴν Ἰεριχώ

2a man named Zacchaeus appeared. He was a leading tax collector, and a rich one at that!

2Καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀνὴρ ὀνόματι καλούμενος Ζακχαῖος καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν ἀρχιτελώνης καὶ αὐτὸς πλούσιος

3He was trying to see who Jesus was, but he couldn't do so due to the crowd, since he was a short man.

3καὶ ἐζήτει ἰδεῖν τὸν Ἰησοῦν τίς ἐστιν καὶ οὐκ ἠδύνατο ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄχλου ὅτι τῇ ἡλικίᾳ μικρὸς ἦν

4So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see Jesus, who was going to pass that way.

4καὶ προδραμὼν εἰς τὸ ἔμπροσθεν ἀνέβη ἐπὶ συκομορέαν ἵνα ἴδῃ αὐτόν ὅτι ἐκείνης ἤμελλεν διέρχεσθαι

5When Jesus came to the tree, he looked up and said, "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down! I must stay at your house today."

5Καὶ ὡς ἦλθεν ἐπὶ τὸν τόπον ἀναβλέψας ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτόν Ζακχαῖε σπεύσας κατάβηθι σήμερον γὰρ ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ σου δεῖ με μεῖναι

6Zacchaeus came down quickly and was glad to welcome him into his home.

6Καὶ σπεύσας κατέβη καὶ ὑπεδέξατο αὐτὸν χαίρων

7But all the people who saw this began to complain: "Jesus is going to be the guest of a notorious sinner!"

7καὶ ἰδόντες πάντες διεγόγγυζον λέγοντες ὅτι Παρὰ ἁμαρτωλῷ ἀνδρὶ εἰσῆλθεν καταλῦσαι

8Later, Zacchaeus stood up and announced to the Lord, "Look! I'm giving half of my possessions to the destitute, and if I have accused anyone falsely, I'm repaying four times as much as I owe."

8Σταθεὶς δὲ Ζακχαῖος εἶπεν πρὸς τὸν Κύριον Ἰδοὺ τὰ ἡμίσιά* μου τῶν ὑπαρχόντων Κύριε τοῖς πτωχοῖς δίδωμι καὶ εἴ τινός τι ἐσυκοφάντησα ἀποδίδωμι τετραπλοῦν

9Then Jesus told him, "Today salvation has come to this home, because this man is also a descendant of Abraham,

9Εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι Σήμερον σωτηρία τῷ οἴκῳ τούτῳ ἐγένετο καθότι καὶ αὐτὸς υἱὸς Ἀβραάμ ἐστιν

10and the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost."

10ἦλθεν γὰρ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ζητῆσαι καὶ σῶσαι τὸ ἀπολωλός

11As they were listening to this, Jesus went on to tell a parable because he was near Jerusalem and because the people thought that the kingdom of God would appear immediately.

11Ἀκουόντων δὲ αὐτῶν ταῦτα προσθεὶς εἶπεν παραβολὴν διὰ τὸ ἐγγὺς εἶναι Ἰερουσαλὴμ αὐτὸν καὶ δοκεῖν αὐτοὺς ὅτι παραχρῆμα μέλλει ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀναφαίνεσθαι

12So he said, "A prince went to a distant country to be appointed king and then to return.

12εἶπεν οὖν Ἄνθρωπός τις εὐγενὴς ἐπορεύθη εἰς χώραν μακρὰν λαβεῖν ἑαυτῷ βασιλείαν καὶ ὑποστρέψαι

13He called ten of his servants and gave them ten coins. He told them, 'Invest this money until I come back.'

13καλέσας δὲ δέκα δούλους ἑαυτοῦ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς δέκα μνᾶς καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Πραγματεύσασθε ἐν ᾧ ἔρχομαι

14But the citizens of his country hated him and sent a delegation to follow him and to announce, 'We don't want this man to rule over us!'

14Οἱ δὲ πολῖται αὐτοῦ ἐμίσουν αὐτόν καὶ ἀπέστειλαν πρεσβείαν ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ λέγοντες Οὐ θέλομεν τοῦτον βασιλεῦσαι ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς

15"After he was appointed king, the prince came back. He ordered the servants to whom he had given the money to be called so he could find out what they had earned by investing.

15Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ἐπανελθεῖν αὐτὸν λαβόντα τὴν βασιλείαν καὶ εἶπεν φωνηθῆναι αὐτῷ τοὺς δούλους τούτους οἷς δεδώκει τὸ ἀργύριον ἵνα γνοῖ 〈τίς〉 τί διεπραγματεύσαντο

16The first servant came and said, 'Sir, your coin has earned ten more coins.'

16Παρεγένετο δὲ ὁ πρῶτος λέγων Κύριε ἡ μνᾶ σου δέκα προσηργάσατο μνᾶς

17The king told him, 'Well done, good servant! Because you have been trustworthy in a very small thing, take charge of ten cities.'

17Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Εὖγε ἀγαθὲ δοῦλε ὅτι ἐν ἐλαχίστῳ πιστὸς ἐγένου ἴσθι ἐξουσίαν ἔχων ἐπάνω δέκα πόλεων

18"The second servant came and said, 'Your coin, sir, has earned five coins.'

18Καὶ ἦλθεν ὁ δεύτερος λέγων Ἡ μνᾶ σου κύριε ἐποίησεν πέντε μνᾶς

19The king told him, 'You take charge of five cities.'

19Εἶπεν δὲ καὶ τούτῳ Καὶ σὺ ἐπάνω γίνου πέντε πόλεων

20"Then the other servant came and said, 'Sir, look! Here's your coin. I've kept it in a cloth for safekeeping

20Καὶ ὁ ἕτερος ἦλθεν λέγων Κύριε ἰδοὺ ἡ μνᾶ σου ἣν εἶχον ἀποκειμένην ἐν σουδαρίῳ

21because I was afraid of you. You are a hard man. You withdraw what you didn't deposit and harvest what you didn't plant.'

21ἐφοβούμην γάρ σε ὅτι ἄνθρωπος αὐστηρὸς εἶ αἴρεις ὃ οὐκ ἔθηκας καὶ θερίζεις ὃ οὐκ ἔσπειρας

22The king told him, 'I will judge you by your own words, you evil servant! You knew, did you, that I was a hard man, and that I withdraw what I didn't deposit and harvest what I didn't plant?

22Λέγει αὐτῷ Ἐκ τοῦ στόματός σου κρίνω σε πονηρὲ δοῦλε ᾔδεις ὅτι ἐγὼ ἄνθρωπος αὐστηρός εἰμι αἴρων ὃ οὐκ ἔθηκα καὶ θερίζων ὃ οὐκ ἔσπειρα

23Then why didn't you put my money in the bank? When I returned, I could have collected it with interest.'

23καὶ διὰ τί οὐκ ἔδωκάς μου τὸ ἀργύριον ἐπὶ τράπεζαν κἀγὼ ἐλθὼν σὺν τόκῳ ἂν αὐτὸ ἔπραξα

24"So the king told those standing nearby, 'Take the coin away from him and give it to the man who has the ten coins.'

24Καὶ τοῖς παρεστῶσιν εἶπεν Ἄρατε ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ τὴν μνᾶν καὶ δότε τῷ τὰς δέκα μνᾶς ἔχοντι

25They answered him, 'Sir, he already has ten coins!'

25Καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Κύριε ἔχει δέκα μνᾶς

26I tell you, to everyone who has something, more will be given, but from the person who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away.

26Λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι παντὶ τῷ ἔχοντι δοθήσεται ἀπὸ δὲ τοῦ μὴ ἔχοντος καὶ ὃ ἔχει ἀρθήσεται

27But as for these enemies of mine who didn't want me to be their king—bring them here and slaughter them in my presence!'"

27πλὴν τοὺς ἐχθρούς μου τούτους τοὺς μὴ θελήσαντάς με βασιλεῦσαι ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς ἀγάγετε ὧδε καὶ κατασφάξατε αὐτοὺς ἔμπροσθέν μου

28After Jesus had said this, he traveled on and went up to Jerusalem.

28Καὶ εἰπὼν ταῦτα ἐπορεύετο ἔμπροσθεν ἀναβαίνων εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα

29As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples on ahead.

29Καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἤγγισεν εἰς Βηθφαγὴ καὶ Βηθανίαν πρὸς τὸ ὄρος τὸ καλούμενον Ἐλαιῶν ἀπέστειλεν δύο τῶν μαθητῶν

30"Go into the village ahead of you," he said. "As you enter, you will find a colt tied up that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it along.

30λέγων Ὑπάγετε εἰς τὴν κατέναντι κώμην ἐν ᾗ εἰσπορευόμενοι εὑρήσετε πῶλον δεδεμένον ἐφ’ ὃν οὐδεὶς πώποτε ἀνθρώπων ἐκάθισεν καὶ λύσαντες αὐτὸν ἀγάγετε

31If anyone asks you why you are untying it, say this: 'The Lord needs it.'"

31καὶ ἐάν τις ὑμᾶς ἐρωτᾷ Διὰ τί λύετε οὕτως ἐρεῖτε Ὅτι Ὁ Κύριος αὐτοῦ χρείαν ἔχει

32So those who were sent went off and found it as Jesus had told them.

32Ἀπελθόντες δὲ οἱ ἀπεσταλμένοι εὗρον καθὼς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς

33While they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying the colt?"

33λυόντων δὲ αὐτῶν τὸν πῶλον εἶπαν οἱ κύριοι αὐτοῦ πρὸς αὐτούς Τί λύετε τὸν πῶλον

34The disciples answered, "The Lord needs it."

34Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν ὅτι Ὁ Κύριος αὐτοῦ χρείαν ἔχει

35Then they brought the colt to Jesus and put their coats on it, and Jesus sat upon it.

35Καὶ ἤγαγον αὐτὸν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἐπιρίψαντες αὐτῶν τὰ ἱμάτια ἐπὶ τὸν πῶλον ἐπεβίβασαν τὸν Ἰησοῦν

36As he was riding along, people kept spreading their coats on the road.

36Πορευομένου δὲ αὐτοῦ ὑπεστρώννυον τὰ ἱμάτια ἑαυτῶν ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ

37He was now approaching the descent from the Mount of Olives. The whole crowd of disciples began to rejoice and to praise God with a loud voice because of all the miracles they had seen.

37ἐγγίζοντος δὲ αὐτοῦ ἤδη πρὸς τῇ καταβάσει τοῦ ὄρους τῶν Ἐλαιῶν ἤρξαντο ἅπαν τὸ πλῆθος τῶν μαθητῶν χαίροντες αἰνεῖν τὸν Θεὸν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ περὶ πασῶν ὧν εἶδον δυνάμεων

38They said, "How blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!"

38λέγοντες Εὐλογημένος ὁ ἐρχόμενος ὁ Βασιλεὺς ἐν ὀνόματι Κυρίου Ἐν οὐρανῷ εἰρήνη καὶ δόξα ἐν ὑψίστοις

39Some of the Pharisees in the crowd told Jesus, "Teacher, tell your disciples to be quiet."

39Καί τινες τῶν Φαρισαίων ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄχλου εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτόν Διδάσκαλε ἐπιτίμησον τοῖς μαθηταῖς σου

40He replied, "I tell you, if they were quiet, the stones would cry out!"

40Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν Λέγω ὑμῖν ‹ὅτι› ἐὰν οὗτοι σιωπήσουσιν οἱ λίθοι κράξουσιν

41When he came closer and saw the city, he began to grieve over it:

41Καὶ ὡς ἤγγισεν ἰδὼν τὴν πόλιν ἔκλαυσεν ἐπ’ αὐτήν

42"If you had only known today what could have brought you peace! But now it is hidden from your sight,

42λέγων ὅτι Εἰ ἔγνως ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ταύτῃ καὶ σὺ τὰ πρὸς εἰρήνην νῦν δὲ ἐκρύβη ἀπὸ ὀφθαλμῶν σου

43because the days will come when your enemies will build walls around you, surround you, and close you in on every side.

43ὅτι ἥξουσιν ἡμέραι ἐπὶ σὲ καὶ παρεμβαλοῦσιν οἱ ἐχθροί σου χάρακά σοι καὶ περικυκλώσουσίν σε καὶ συνέξουσίν σε πάντοθεν

44They will level you to the ground—you and those who live within your city limits. They will not leave one stone on another within your walls, because you didn't recognize the time when you were visited."

44καὶ ἐδαφιοῦσίν σε καὶ τὰ τέκνα σου ἐν σοί καὶ οὐκ ἀφήσουσιν λίθον ἐπὶ λίθον ἐν σοί ἀνθ’ ὧν οὐκ ἔγνως τὸν καιρὸν τῆς ἐπισκοπῆς σου

45Then Jesus went into the Temple and began to throw out those who were selling things.

45Καὶ εἰσελθὼν εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν ἤρξατο ἐκβάλλειν τοὺς πωλοῦντας

46He told them, "It is written, 'My house is to be called a house of prayer,' but you have turned it into a hideout for bandits!"

46λέγων αὐτοῖς Γέγραπται Καὶ ἔσται ὁ οἶκός μου οἶκος προσευχῆς ὑμεῖς δὲ αὐτὸν ἐποιήσατε Σπήλαιον λῃστῶν

47Then he began teaching in the Temple every day. The high priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people kept looking for a way to kill him,

47Καὶ ἦν διδάσκων τὸ καθ’ ἡμέραν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς ἐζήτουν αὐτὸν ἀπολέσαι καὶ οἱ πρῶτοι τοῦ λαοῦ

48but they couldn't find a way to do it, because all the people were eager to hear him.

48καὶ οὐχ εὕρισκον τὸ τί ποιήσωσιν ὁ λαὸς γὰρ ἅπας ἐξεκρέματο* αὐτοῦ ἀκούων
