1After this, Jesus traveled in Galilee, since he did not want to travel in Judea because the Jews were trying to kill him.

1Καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα περιεπάτει ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ οὐ γὰρ ἤθελεν ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ περιπατεῖν ὅτι ἐζήτουν αὐτὸν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἀποκτεῖναι

2The Jewish Festival of Shelters was near.

2ἦν δὲ ἐγγὺς ἡ ἑορτὴ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἡ σκηνοπηγία

3So his brothers said to him, "Leave here and go to Judea so your disciples can see your works that you are doing.

3εἶπον οὖν πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ Μετάβηθι ἐντεῦθεν καὶ ὕπαγε εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίαν ἵνα καὶ οἱ μαθηταί σου θεωρήσουσιν «τὰ ἔργα» σοῦ ἃ ποιεῖς

4For no one does anything in secret while he's seeking public recognition. If you do these things, show yourself to the world."

4οὐδεὶς γάρ τι ἐν κρυπτῷ ποιεῖ καὶ ζητεῖ αὐτὸς ἐν παρρησίᾳ εἶναι εἰ ταῦτα ποιεῖς φανέρωσον σεαυτὸν τῷ κόσμῳ

5(For not even his brothers believed in him.)

5οὐδὲ γὰρ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ ἐπίστευον εἰς αὐτόν

6Jesus told them, "My time has not yet arrived, but your time is always at hand.

6Λέγει οὖν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ὁ καιρὸς ὁ ἐμὸς οὔπω πάρεστιν ὁ δὲ καιρὸς ὁ ὑμέτερος πάντοτέ ἐστιν ἕτοιμος

7The world cannot hate you, but it does hate me because I testify about it--that its works are evil.

7οὐ δύναται ὁ κόσμος μισεῖν ὑμᾶς ἐμὲ δὲ μισεῖ ὅτι ἐγὼ μαρτυρῶ περὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ πονηρά ἐστιν

8Go up to the festival yourselves. I'm not going up to this festival, because my time has not yet fully come."

8ὑμεῖς ἀνάβητε εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν ἐγὼ οὐκ ἀναβαίνω εἰς τὴν ἑορτὴν ταύτην ὅτι ὁ ἐμὸς καιρὸς οὔπω πεπλήρωται

9After he had said these things, he stayed in Galilee.

9Ταῦτα δὲ εἰπὼν αὐτὸς* ἔμεινεν ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ

10After his brothers had gone up to the festival, then he also went up, not openly but secretly.

10Ὡς δὲ ἀνέβησαν οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν τότε καὶ αὐτὸς ἀνέβη οὐ φανερῶς ἀλλὰ ὡς ἐν κρυπτῷ

11The Jews were looking for him at the festival and saying, "Where is he?"

11Οἱ οὖν Ἰουδαῖοι ἐζήτουν αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ ἑορτῇ καὶ ἔλεγον Ποῦ ἐστιν ἐκεῖνος

12And there was a lot of murmuring about him among the crowds. Some were saying, "He's a good man." Others were saying, "No, on the contrary, he's deceiving the people."

12καὶ γογγυσμὸς περὶ αὐτοῦ ἦν πολὺς ἐν τοῖς ὄχλοις οἱ μὲν ἔλεγον ὅτι Ἀγαθός ἐστιν Ἄλλοι δὲ ἔλεγον Οὔ ἀλλὰ πλανᾷ τὸν ὄχλον

13Still, nobody was talking publicly about him for fear of the Jews.

13Οὐδεὶς μέντοι παρρησίᾳ ἐλάλει περὶ αὐτοῦ διὰ τὸν φόβον τῶν Ἰουδαίων

14When the festival was already half over, Jesus went up into the temple and began to teach.

14Ἤδη δὲ τῆς ἑορτῆς μεσούσης ἀνέβη Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν καὶ ἐδίδασκεν

15Then the Jews were amazed and said, "How is this man so learned, since he hasn't been trained?"

15ἐθαύμαζον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι λέγοντες Πῶς οὗτος γράμματα οἶδεν μὴ μεμαθηκώς

16Jesus answered them, "My teaching isn't mine but is from the one who sent me.

16Ἀπεκρίθη οὖν αὐτοῖς ‹ὁ› Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν Ἡ Ἐμὴ διδαχὴ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐμὴ ἀλλὰ τοῦ πέμψαντός με

17If anyone wants to do his will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own.

17ἐάν τις θέλῃ τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ ποιεῖν γνώσεται περὶ τῆς διδαχῆς πότερον ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐστιν ἢ ἐγὼ ἀπ’ ἐμαυτοῦ λαλῶ

18The one who speaks on his own seeks his own glory; but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is true, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

18ὁ ἀφ’ ἑαυτοῦ λαλῶν τὴν δόξαν τὴν ἰδίαν ζητεῖ ὁ δὲ ζητῶν τὴν δόξαν τοῦ πέμψαντος αὐτὸν οὗτος ἀληθής ἐστιν καὶ ἀδικία ἐν αὐτῷ οὐκ ἔστιν

19Didn't Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?"

19Οὐ Μωϋσῆς δέδωκεν* ὑμῖν τὸν νόμον καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐξ ὑμῶν ποιεῖ τὸν νόμον τί με ζητεῖτε ἀποκτεῖναι

20"You have a demon!" the crowd responded. "Who is trying to kill you?"

20Ἀπεκρίθη ὁ ὄχλος Δαιμόνιον ἔχεις τίς σε ζητεῖ ἀποκτεῖναι

21"I performed one work, and you are all amazed," Jesus answered.

21Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἓν ἔργον ἐποίησα καὶ πάντες θαυμάζετε

22"This is why Moses has given you circumcision--not that it comes from Moses but from the fathers--and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.

22διὰ τοῦτο Μωϋσῆς δέδωκεν ὑμῖν τὴν περιτομήν οὐχ ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ Μωϋσέως ἐστὶν ἀλλ’ ἐκ τῶν πατέρων καὶ ἐν σαββάτῳ περιτέμνετε ἄνθρωπον

23If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses won't be broken, are you angry at me because I made a man entirely well on the Sabbath?

23εἰ περιτομὴν λαμβάνει (ὁ) ἄνθρωπος ἐν σαββάτῳ ἵνα μὴ λυθῇ ὁ νόμος Μωϋσέως ἐμοὶ χολᾶτε ὅτι ὅλον ἄνθρωπον ὑγιῆ ἐποίησα ἐν σαββάτῳ

24Stop judging according to outward appearances; rather judge according to righteous judgment."

24μὴ κρίνετε κατ’ ὄψιν ἀλλὰ τὴν δικαίαν κρίσιν κρίνετε*

25Some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, "Isn't this the man they are trying to kill?

25Ἔλεγον οὖν τινες ἐκ τῶν Ἱεροσολυμιτῶν Οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν ὃν ζητοῦσιν ἀποκτεῖναι

26Yet, look, he's speaking publicly and they're saying nothing to him. Can it be true that the authorities know he is the Messiah?

26καὶ ἴδε παρρησίᾳ λαλεῖ καὶ οὐδὲν αὐτῷ λέγουσιν Μή‿ ποτε ἀληθῶς ἔγνωσαν οἱ ἄρχοντες ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστός

27But we know where this man is from. When the Messiah comes, nobody will know where he is from."

27ἀλλὰ τοῦτον οἴδαμεν πόθεν ἐστίν ὁ δὲ Χριστὸς ὅταν ἔρχηται οὐδεὶς γινώσκει πόθεν ἐστίν

28As he was teaching in the temple, Jesus cried out, "You know me and you know where I am from. Yet I have not come on my own, but the one who sent me is true. You don't know him;

28Ἔκραξεν οὖν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ διδάσκων ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ λέγων Κἀμὲ οἴδατε καὶ οἴδατε πόθεν εἰμί καὶ ἀπ’ ἐμαυτοῦ οὐκ ἐλήλυθα ἀλλ’ ἔστιν ἀληθινὸς ὁ πέμψας με ὃν ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε

29I know him because I am from him, and he sent me."

29ἐγὼ οἶδα αὐτόν ὅτι παρ’ αὐτοῦ εἰμι κἀκεῖνός με ἀπέστειλεν

30Then they tried to seize him. Yet no one laid a hand on him because his hour had not yet come.

30Ἐζήτουν οὖν αὐτὸν πιάσαι καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐπέβαλεν ἐπ’ αὐτὸν τὴν χεῖρα ὅτι οὔπω ἐληλύθει ἡ ὥρα αὐτοῦ

31However, many from the crowd believed in him and said, "When the Messiah comes, he won't perform more signs than this man has done, will he?"

31Ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου δὲ πολλοὶ ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτόν καὶ ἔλεγον Ὁ Χριστὸς ὅταν ἔλθῃ μὴ πλείονα σημεῖα ποιήσει ὧν οὗτος ἐποίησεν

32The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things about him, and so the chief priests and the Pharisees sent servants to arrest him.

32Ἤκουσαν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι τοῦ ὄχλου γογγύζοντος περὶ αὐτοῦ ταῦτα καὶ ἀπέστειλαν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ὑπηρέτας ἵνα πιάσωσιν αὐτόν

33Then Jesus said, "I am only with you for a short time. Then I'm going to the one who sent me.

33εἶπεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ἔτι χρόνον μικρὸν μεθ’ ὑμῶν εἰμι καὶ ὑπάγω πρὸς τὸν πέμψαντά με

34You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come."

34ζητήσετέ με καὶ οὐχ εὑρήσετέ [με] καὶ ὅπου εἰμὶ ἐγὼ ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν

35Then the Jews said to one another, "Where does he intend to go so we won't find him? He doesn't intend to go to the Jewish people dispersed among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, does he?

35Εἶπον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι πρὸς ἑαυτούς Ποῦ οὗτος μέλλει πορεύεσθαι ὅτι ἡμεῖς οὐχ εὑρήσομεν αὐτόν μὴ εἰς τὴν Διασπορὰν τῶν Ἑλλήνων μέλλει πορεύεσθαι καὶ διδάσκειν τοὺς Ἕλληνας

36What is this remark he made: 'You will look for me, and you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come'?"

36τίς ἐστιν ὁ λόγος οὗτος ὃν εἶπεν Ζητήσετέ με καὶ οὐχ εὑρήσετέ [με] καὶ Ὅπου εἰμὶ ἐγὼ ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν

37On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and cried out, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.

37Ἐν δὲ τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ μεγάλῃ τῆς ἑορτῆς εἱστήκει ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἔκραξεν λέγων Ἐάν τις διψᾷ ἐρχέσθω πρός με καὶ πινέτω

38The one who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, will have streams of living water flow from deep within him."

38ὁ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμέ καθὼς εἶπεν ἡ γραφή Ποταμοὶ ἐκ τῆς κοιλίας αὐτοῦ ῥεύσουσιν ὕδατος ζῶντος

39He said this about the Spirit. Those who believed in Jesus were going to receive the Spirit, for the Spirit had not yet been given because Jesus had not yet been glorified.

39τοῦτο δὲ εἶπεν περὶ τοῦ Πνεύματος οὗ ἔμελλον λαμβάνειν οἱ πιστεύσαντες εἰς αὐτόν οὔπω γὰρ ἦν Πνεῦμα ὅτι Ἰησοῦς οὐδέπω ἐδοξάσθη

40When some from the crowd heard these words, they said, "This truly is the Prophet."

40Ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου οὖν ἀκούσαντες τῶν λόγων τούτων ἔλεγον (ὅτι) Οὗτός ἐστιν ἀληθῶς ὁ προφήτης

41Others said, "This is the Messiah." But some said, "Surely the Messiah doesn't come from Galilee, does he?

41Ἄλλοι ἔλεγον Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστός Οἱ δὲ ἔλεγον Μὴ γὰρ ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ὁ Χριστὸς ἔρχεται

42Doesn't the Scripture say that the Messiah comes from David's offspring and from the town of Bethlehem, where David lived?"

42οὐχ ἡ γραφὴ εἶπεν ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ σπέρματος Δαυὶδ καὶ ἀπὸ Βηθλεὲμ τῆς κώμης ὅπου ἦν Δαυὶδ ἔρχεται ὁ Χριστός

43So the crowd was divided because of him.

43Σχίσμα οὖν ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ὄχλῳ δι’ αὐτόν

44Some of them wanted to seize him, but no one laid hands on him.

44τινὲς δὲ ἤθελον ἐξ αὐτῶν πιάσαι αὐτόν ἀλλ’ οὐδεὶς ἐπέβαλεν ἐπ’ αὐτὸν τὰς χεῖρας

45Then the servants came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why didn't you bring him?"

45Ἦλθον οὖν οἱ ὑπηρέται πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ Φαρισαίους καὶ εἶπον αὐτοῖς ἐκεῖνοι Διὰ τί οὐκ ἠγάγετε αὐτόν

46The servants answered, "No man ever spoke like this!"

46Ἀπεκρίθησαν οἱ ὑπηρέται Οὐδέποτε ἐλάλησεν οὕτως ἄνθρωπος 〈ὡς οὗτος λαλεῖ ὁ ἄνθρωπος〉

47Then the Pharisees responded to them: "Are you fooled too?

47Ἀπεκρίθησαν οὖν αὐτοῖς οἱ Φαρισαῖοι Μὴ καὶ ὑμεῖς πεπλάνησθε

48Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in him?

48μή τις ἐκ τῶν ἀρχόντων ἐπίστευσεν εἰς αὐτὸν ἢ ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων

49But this crowd, which doesn't know the law, is accursed."

49ἀλλὰ ὁ ὄχλος οὗτος ὁ μὴ γινώσκων τὸν νόμον ἐπάρατοί εἰσιν

50Nicodemus--the one who came to him previously and who was one of them--said to them,

50Λέγει Νικόδημος πρὸς αὐτούς ὁ ἐλθὼν πρὸς αὐτὸν [τὸ] πρότερον εἷς ὢν ἐξ αὐτῶν

51"Our law doesn't judge a man before it hears from him and knows what he's doing, does it?"

51Μὴ ὁ νόμος ἡμῶν κρίνει τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἐὰν μὴ ἀκούσῃ πρῶτον παρ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ γνῷ τί ποιεῖ

52"You aren't from Galilee too, are you?" they replied. "Investigate and you will see that no prophet arises from Galilee."

52Ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Μὴ καὶ σὺ ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας εἶ ἐραύνησον καὶ ἴδε ὅτι ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας προφήτης οὐκ ἐγείρεται

53Then each one went to his house.

53Καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν* ἕκαστος εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ
