1On one occasion, while [Jesus] was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret [with] the crowd pressing in on Him to hear the word of God, 1Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ τὸν ὄχλον ἐπικεῖσθαι αὐτῷ καὶ ἀκούειν τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν ἑστὼς παρὰ τὴν λίμνην Γεννησαρέτ
2He saw two boats at the edge of the lake. The fishermen had left them and were washing [their] nets. 2καὶ εἶδεν πλοῖα δύο ἑστῶτα παρὰ τὴν λίμνην οἱ δὲ ἁλιεῖς ἀπ’ αὐτῶν ἀποβάντες ἔπλυνον τὰ δίκτυα
3[Jesus] got into the boat belonging to Simon [and] asked him to put out a little from shore. And sitting down, He taught the people from the boat. 3ἐμβὰς δὲ εἰς ἓν τῶν πλοίων ὃ ἦν Σίμωνος ἠρώτησεν αὐτὸν ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς ἐπαναγαγεῖν ὀλίγον καθίσας δὲ ἐκ τοῦ πλοίου ἐδίδασκεν τοὺς ὄχλους
4When [Jesus] had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into deep [water] and let down your nets for a catch.” 4Ὡς δὲ ἐπαύσατο λαλῶν εἶπεν πρὸς τὸν Σίμωνα Ἐπανάγαγε εἰς τὸ βάθος καὶ χαλάσατε τὰ δίκτυα ὑμῶν εἰς ἄγραν
5“Master,” Simon replied, “we have worked through [the] night [without] catching [anything]. But because You say so, I will let down the nets.” 5Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς Σίμων εἶπεν Ἐπιστάτα δι’ ὅλης νυκτὸς κοπιάσαντες οὐδὲν ἐλάβομεν ἐπὶ δὲ τῷ ῥήματί σου χαλάσω τὰ δίκτυα
6When they had done so, they caught [such] a large number of fish [that] their nets began to tear. 6καὶ τοῦτο ποιήσαντες συνέκλεισαν πλῆθος ἰχθύων πολύ διερρήσσετο δὲ τὰ δίκτυα αὐτῶν
7So they signaled to [their] partners in the other boat to come [and] help them, and they came and filled both boats so [full] that they began to sink. 7καὶ κατένευσαν τοῖς μετόχοις ἐν τῷ ἑτέρῳ πλοίῳ τοῦ ἐλθόντας συλλαβέσθαι αὐτοῖς καὶ ἦλθον* καὶ ἔπλησαν ἀμφότερα τὰ πλοῖα ὥστε βυθίζεσθαι αὐτά
8When Simon Peter saw [this], he fell at Jesus’ knees. “Go away from me, Lord,” he said, “for I am a sinful man.” 8Ἰδὼν δὲ Σίμων Πέτρος προσέπεσεν τοῖς γόνασιν Ἰησοῦ λέγων Ἔξελθε ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ ὅτι ἀνὴρ ἁμαρτωλός εἰμι Κύριε
9For he and his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 9θάμβος γὰρ περιέσχεν αὐτὸν καὶ πάντας τοὺς σὺν αὐτῷ ἐπὶ τῇ ἄγρᾳ τῶν ἰχθύων ὧν* συνέλαβον
10and so [were] [his] partners James and John, [the] sons of Zebedee. “{Do} not be afraid,” Jesus said to Simon, “from now on you will catch men.” 10ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ Ἰάκωβον καὶ Ἰωάννην υἱοὺς Ζεβεδαίου οἳ ἦσαν κοινωνοὶ τῷ Σίμωνι Καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς τὸν Σίμωνα ὁ Ἰησοῦς Μὴ φοβοῦ ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν ἀνθρώπους ἔσῃ ζωγρῶν
11And when they had brought [their] boats ashore, they left everything [and] followed Him. 11καὶ καταγαγόντες τὰ πλοῖα ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ἀφέντες πάντα ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ
12While [Jesus] was in one of the towns, a man [came along] [who was] covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he fell facedown [and] begged Him, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” 12Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ εἶναι αὐτὸν ἐν μιᾷ τῶν πόλεων καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀνὴρ πλήρης λέπρας ἰδὼν δὲ τὸν Ἰησοῦν πεσὼν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον ἐδεήθη αὐτοῦ λέγων Κύριε ἐὰν θέλῃς δύνασαί με καθαρίσαι
13[Jesus] reached out [His] hand [and] touched [the man]. “I am willing,” He said, “be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him. 13Καὶ ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα ἥψατο αὐτοῦ λέγων Θέλω καθαρίσθητι καὶ εὐθέως ἡ λέπρα ἀπῆλθεν ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ
14“{Do not} tell [anyone],” [Jesus] instructed him. “But go, show yourself to the priest and present the offering Moses prescribed for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.” 14Καὶ αὐτὸς παρήγγειλεν αὐτῷ μηδενὶ εἰπεῖν Ἀλλὰ ἀπελθὼν δεῖξον σεαυτὸν τῷ ἱερεῖ καὶ προσένεγκε περὶ τοῦ καθαρισμοῦ σου καθὼς προσέταξεν Μωϋσῆς εἰς μαρτύριον αὐτοῖς
15But the news about [Jesus] spread all the more, and great crowds came to hear [Him] and to be healed of their sicknesses. 15Διήρχετο δὲ μᾶλλον ὁ λόγος περὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ συνήρχοντο ὄχλοι πολλοὶ ἀκούειν καὶ θεραπεύεσθαι ἀπὸ τῶν ἀσθενειῶν αὐτῶν
16Yet He frequently withdrew to the wilderness to pray. 16αὐτὸς δὲ ἦν ὑποχωρῶν ἐν ταῖς ἐρήμοις καὶ προσευχόμενος
17One day [Jesus] was teaching, and [the] Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting [there]. [People] had come from Jerusalem and from every village of Galilee and Judea, and [the] power of [the] Lord was [present] for Him to heal [the sick]. 17Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν μιᾷ τῶν ἡμερῶν καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν διδάσκων καὶ ἦσαν καθήμενοι Φαρισαῖοι καὶ νομοδιδάσκαλοι οἳ ἦσαν ἐληλυθότες ἐκ πάσης κώμης τῆς Γαλιλαίας καὶ Ἰουδαίας καὶ Ἰερουσαλήμ καὶ δύναμις Κυρίου ἦν εἰς τὸ ἰᾶσθαι αὐτόν
18Just then, [some] men [came] carrying a paralyzed man on a mat. They tried to bring him inside to set him before [Jesus], 18Καὶ ἰδοὺ ἄνδρες φέροντες ἐπὶ κλίνης ἄνθρωπον ὃς ἦν παραλελυμένος καὶ ἐζήτουν αὐτὸν εἰσενεγκεῖν καὶ θεῖναι [αὐτὸν] ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ
19but they could not find a way through the crowd. So they went up on the roof and lowered him on [his] mat through the tiles into the middle [of the crowd], right in front of Jesus. 19καὶ μὴ εὑρόντες ποίας εἰσενέγκωσιν αὐτὸν διὰ τὸν ὄχλον ἀναβάντες ἐπὶ τὸ δῶμα διὰ τῶν κεράμων καθῆκαν αὐτὸν σὺν τῷ κλινιδίῳ εἰς τὸ μέσον ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ Ἰησοῦ
20When [Jesus] saw their faith, He said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.” 20Καὶ ἰδὼν τὴν πίστιν αὐτῶν εἶπεν Ἄνθρωπε ἀφέωνταί σοι αἱ ἁμαρτίαι σου
21But the scribes and Pharisees began to consider [this] [and] ask, “Who is this [man] who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 21Καὶ ἤρξαντο διαλογίζεσθαι οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι λέγοντες Τίς ἐστιν οὗτος ὃς λαλεῖ βλασφημίας τίς δύναται ἁμαρτίας ἀφεῖναι εἰ μὴ μόνος ὁ Θεός
22Knowing what they were thinking, Jesus replied, “Why do you question this in your hearts? 22Ἐπιγνοὺς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς τοὺς διαλογισμοὺς αὐτῶν ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Τί διαλογίζεσθε ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν
23Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk?’ 23τί ἐστιν εὐκοπώτερον εἰπεῖν Ἀφέωνταί σοι αἱ ἁμαρτίαι σου ἢ εἰπεῖν Ἔγειρε καὶ περιπάτει
24But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on the earth to forgive sins...” He said to the paralytic, “I tell you, get up, pick up your mat, [and] go home.” 24ἵνα δὲ εἰδῆτε ὅτι ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐξουσίαν ἔχει ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἀφιέναι ἁμαρτίας εἶπεν τῷ παραλελυμένῳ Σοὶ λέγω ἔγειρε καὶ ἄρας τὸ κλινίδιόν σου πορεύου εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου
25Immediately [the man] stood up before them, took what he had been lying on, and went home glorifying God. 25Καὶ παραχρῆμα ἀναστὰς ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν ἄρας ἐφ’ ὃ κατέκειτο ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ δοξάζων τὸν Θεόν
26Everyone was taken with amazement and glorified God. They were filled with awe [and] said, “We have seen remarkable things today.” 26καὶ ἔκστασις ἔλαβεν ἅπαντας καὶ ἐδόξαζον τὸν Θεόν καὶ ἐπλήσθησαν φόβου λέγοντες ὅτι Εἴδομεν παράδοξα σήμερον
27After [this], [Jesus] went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax booth. “Follow Me,” He told him, 27Καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα ἐξῆλθεν καὶ ἐθεάσατο τελώνην ὀνόματι Λευὶν καθήμενον ἐπὶ τὸ τελώνιον καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἀκολούθει μοι
28and [Levi] got up, left everything, [and] followed Him. 28καὶ καταλιπὼν πάντα ἀναστὰς ἠκολούθει αὐτῷ
29Then Levi hosted a great banquet for [Jesus] at his house. A large crowd of tax collectors was there, along with others who were eating with them. 29Καὶ ἐποίησεν δοχὴν μεγάλην Λευὶς αὐτῷ ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἦν ὄχλος πολὺς τελωνῶν καὶ ἄλλων οἳ ἦσαν μετ’ αὐτῶν κατακείμενοι
30But the Pharisees and their scribes complained to [Jesus’] disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” 30καὶ ἐγόγγυζον οἱ Φαρισαῖοι καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς αὐτῶν πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ λέγοντες Διὰ τί μετὰ τῶν τελωνῶν καὶ ἁμαρτωλῶν ἐσθίετε καὶ πίνετε
31Jesus answered, “[It is] not the healthy [who] need a doctor, but the sick. 31Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Οὐ χρείαν ἔχουσιν οἱ ὑγιαίνοντες ἰατροῦ ἀλλὰ οἱ κακῶς ἔχοντες
32I have not come to call [the] righteous, but sinners, to repentance.” 32οὐκ ἐλήλυθα καλέσαι δικαίους ἀλλὰ ἁμαρτωλοὺς εἰς μετάνοιαν
33Then they said to Him, “John’s disciples and those of the Pharisees frequently fast and pray, but Yours keep on eating and drinking.” 33Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτόν Οἱ μαθηταὶ Ἰωάννου νηστεύουσιν πυκνὰ καὶ δεήσεις ποιοῦνται ὁμοίως καὶ οἱ τῶν Φαρισαίων οἱ δὲ σοὶ ἐσθίουσιν καὶ πίνουσιν
34Jesus replied, “Can you make the guests of the bridegroom fast while [He] is with them? 34Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Μὴ δύνασθε τοὺς υἱοὺς τοῦ νυμφῶνος ἐν ᾧ ὁ νυμφίος μετ’ αὐτῶν ἐστιν ποιῆσαι νηστεῦσαι
35But [the] time will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them; then they will fast.” 35ἐλεύσονται δὲ ἡμέραι καὶ ὅταν ἀπαρθῇ ἀπ’ αὐτῶν ὁ νυμφίος τότε νηστεύσουσιν ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις
36He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment [and] sews [it] on an old [one]. If he does, he will tear the new [garment] as well, and [the] patch from the new will not match the old. 36Ἔλεγεν δὲ καὶ παραβολὴν πρὸς αὐτοὺς ὅτι Οὐδεὶς ἐπίβλημα ἀπὸ ἱματίου καινοῦ σχίσας ἐπιβάλλει ἐπὶ ἱμάτιον παλαιόν εἰ δὲ μή¦γε καὶ τὸ καινὸν σχίσει καὶ τῷ παλαιῷ οὐ συμφωνήσει τὸ ἐπίβλημα τὸ ἀπὸ τοῦ καινοῦ
37And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins, [the wine] will spill, and the wineskins will be ruined. 37Καὶ οὐδεὶς βάλλει οἶνον νέον εἰς ἀσκοὺς παλαιούς εἰ δὲ μή¦γε ῥήξει ὁ οἶνος ὁ νέος τοὺς ἀσκούς καὶ αὐτὸς ἐκχυθήσεται καὶ οἱ ἀσκοὶ ἀπολοῦνται
38Instead, new wine is poured into new wineskins. 38ἀλλὰ οἶνον νέον εἰς ἀσκοὺς καινοὺς βλητέον
39And no one after drinking old [wine ] wants new, for he says, ‘The old is better.’” 39καὶ οὐδεὶς πιὼν παλαιὸν θέλει νέον λέγει γάρ Ὁ παλαιὸς χρηστός ἐστιν
