After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.1Μετὰ ταῦτα ἦν ἑορτὴ τῶν Ἰουδαίων καὶ ἀνέβη Ἰησοῦς εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα
Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches.2Ἔστιν δὲ ἐν τοῖς Ἱεροσολύμοις ἐπὶ τῇ προβατικῇ κολυμβήθρα ἐπιλεγομένη Ἑβραϊστὶ Βηθζαθά πέντε στοὰς ἔχουσα
In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water.3ἐν ταύταις κατέκειτο πλῆθος τῶν ἀσθενούντων τυφλῶν χωλῶν ξηρῶν 〈ἐκδεχομένων τὴν τοῦ ὕδατος κίνησιν〉
For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had.4〈ἄγγελος γὰρ κατὰ καιρὸν κατέβαινεν ἐν τῇ κολυμβήθρᾳ καὶ ἐτάρασσε τὸ ὕδωρ οὖν πρῶτος ἐμβὰς μετὰ τὴν ταραχὴν τοῦ ὕδατος ὑγιὴς ἐγίνετο δήποτε κατείχετο νοσήματι〉
Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years.5Ἦν δέ τις ἄνθρωπος ἐκεῖ τριάκοντα καὶ ὀκτὼ ἔτη ἔχων ἐν τῇ ἀσθενείᾳ αὐτοῦ
When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?”6τοῦτον ἰδὼν Ἰησοῦς κατακείμενον καὶ γνοὺς ὅτι πολὺν ἤδη χρόνον ἔχει λέγει αὐτῷ Θέλεις ὑγιὴς γενέσθαι
The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.”7Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ ἀσθενῶν Κύριε ἄνθρωπον οὐκ ἔχω ἵνα ὅταν ταραχθῇ τὸ ὕδωρ βάλῃ με εἰς τὴν κολυμβήθραν ἐν δὲ ἔρχομαι ἐγὼ ἄλλος πρὸ ἐμοῦ καταβαίνει
Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.”8Λέγει αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Ἔγειρε ἆρον τὸν κράβαττόν σου καὶ περιπάτει
And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath.9Καὶ εὐθέως ἐγένετο ὑγιὴς ἄνθρωπος καὶ ἦρεν τὸν κράβαττον αὐτοῦ καὶ περιεπάτει Ἦν δὲ σάββατον ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ
The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.”10ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι τῷ τεθεραπευμένῳ Σάββατόν ἐστιν καὶ οὐκ ἔξεστίν σοι ἆραι τὸν κράβαττον [σου]
He answered them, “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.’ ”11ὃς δὲ ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς ποιήσας με ὑγιῆ ἐκεῖνός μοι εἶπεν Ἆρον τὸν κράβαττόν σου καὶ περιπάτει
Then they asked him, “Who is the Man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?”12Ἠρώτησαν ‹οὖν› αὐτόν Τίς ἐστιν ἄνθρωπος εἰπών σοι Ἆρον καὶ περιπάτει
But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place.13 δὲ ἰαθεὶς οὐκ ᾔδει τίς ἐστιν γὰρ Ἰησοῦς ἐξένευσεν ὄχλου ὄντος ἐν τῷ τόπῳ
Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.”14Μετὰ ταῦτα εὑρίσκει αὐτὸν Ἰησοῦς ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἴδε ὑγιὴς γέγονας μηκέτι ἁμάρτανε ἵνα μὴ χεῖρόν σοί τι γένηται
The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.15ἀπῆλθεν ἄνθρωπος καὶ ἀνήγγειλεν* τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις ὅτι Ἰησοῦς ἐστιν ποιήσας αὐτὸν ὑγιῆ
For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath.16Καὶ διὰ τοῦτο ἐδίωκον οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι τὸν Ἰησοῦν ὅτι ταῦτα ἐποίει ἐν σαββάτῳ
But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.”17 δὲ [Ἰησοῦς] ἀπεκρίνατο αὐτοῖς Πατήρ μου ἕως ἄρτι ἐργάζεται κἀγὼ ἐργάζομαι
Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.18Διὰ τοῦτο οὖν μᾶλλον ἐζήτουν αὐτὸν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἀποκτεῖναι ὅτι οὐ μόνον ἔλυεν τὸ σάββατον ἀλλὰ καὶ Πατέρα ἴδιον ἔλεγεν τὸν Θεόν ἴσον ἑαυτὸν ποιῶν τῷ Θεῷ
Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.19Ἀπεκρίνατο οὖν Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν οὐ δύναται Υἱὸς ποιεῖν ἀφ’ ἑαυτοῦ οὐδὲν ἐὰν* μή τι βλέπῃ τὸν Πατέρα ποιοῦντα γὰρ ἂν ἐκεῖνος ποιῇ ταῦτα καὶ Υἱὸς ὁμοίως ποιεῖ
For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel.20 γὰρ Πατὴρ φιλεῖ τὸν Υἱὸν καὶ πάντα δείκνυσιν αὐτῷ αὐτὸς ποιεῖ καὶ μείζονα τούτων δείξει αὐτῷ ἔργα ἵνα ὑμεῖς θαυμάζητε
For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will.21Ὥσπερ γὰρ Πατὴρ ἐγείρει τοὺς νεκροὺς καὶ ζωοποιεῖ οὕτως καὶ Υἱὸς οὓς θέλει ζωοποιεῖ
For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son,22οὐδὲ γὰρ Πατὴρ κρίνει οὐδένα ἀλλὰ τὴν κρίσιν πᾶσαν δέδωκεν τῷ Υἱῷ
that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.23ἵνα πάντες τιμῶσι τὸν Υἱὸν καθὼς τιμῶσι τὸν Πατέρα μὴ τιμῶν τὸν Υἱὸν οὐ τιμᾷ τὸν Πατέρα τὸν πέμψαντα αὐτόν
“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.24Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι τὸν λόγον μου ἀκούων καὶ πιστεύων τῷ πέμψαντί με ἔχει ζωὴν αἰώνιον καὶ εἰς κρίσιν οὐκ ἔρχεται ἀλλὰ μεταβέβηκεν ἐκ τοῦ θανάτου εἰς τὴν ζωήν
Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live.25Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ἔρχεται ὥρα καὶ νῦν ἐστιν ὅτε οἱ νεκροὶ ἀκούσουσιν τῆς φωνῆς τοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ οἱ ἀκούσαντες ζήσουσιν
For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself,26ὥσπερ γὰρ Πατὴρ ἔχει ζωὴν ἐν ἑαυτῷ οὕτως καὶ τῷ Υἱῷ ἔδωκεν ζωὴν ἔχειν ἐν ἑαυτῷ
and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man.27καὶ ἐξουσίαν ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ κρίσιν ποιεῖν ὅτι Υἱὸς ἀνθρώπου ἐστίν
Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice28μὴ θαυμάζετε τοῦτο ὅτι ἔρχεται ὥρα ἐν πάντες οἱ ἐν τοῖς μνημείοις ἀκούσουσιν τῆς φωνῆς αὐτοῦ
and come forth— those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.29καὶ ἐκπορεύσονται οἱ τὰ ἀγαθὰ ποιήσαντες εἰς ἀνάστασιν ζωῆς οἱ ‹δὲ› τὰ φαῦλα πράξαντες εἰς ἀνάστασιν κρίσεως
I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.30Οὐ δύναμαι ἐγὼ ποιεῖν ἀπ’ ἐμαυτοῦ οὐδέν καθὼς ἀκούω κρίνω καὶ κρίσις ἐμὴ δικαία ἐστίν ὅτι οὐ ζητῶ τὸ θέλημα τὸ ἐμὸν ἀλλὰ τὸ θέλημα τοῦ πέμψαντός με
“If I bear witness of Myself, My witness is not true.31Ἐὰν ἐγὼ μαρτυρῶ περὶ ἐμαυτοῦ μαρτυρία μου οὐκ ἔστιν ἀληθής
There is another who bears witness of Me, and I know that the witness which He witnesses of Me is true.32ἄλλος ἐστὶν μαρτυρῶν περὶ ἐμοῦ καὶ οἶδα ὅτι ἀληθής ἐστιν μαρτυρία ἣν μαρτυρεῖ περὶ ἐμοῦ
You have sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth.33Ὑμεῖς ἀπεστάλκατε πρὸς Ἰωάννην καὶ μεμαρτύρηκεν τῇ ἀληθείᾳ
Yet I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things that you may be saved.34ἐγὼ δὲ οὐ παρὰ ἀνθρώπου τὴν μαρτυρίαν λαμβάνω ἀλλὰ ταῦτα λέγω ἵνα ὑμεῖς σωθῆτε
He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light.35Ἐκεῖνος ἦν λύχνος καιόμενος καὶ φαίνων ὑμεῖς δὲ ἠθελήσατε ἀγαλλιαθῆναι πρὸς ὥραν ἐν τῷ φωτὶ αὐτοῦ
But I have a greater witness than John’s; for the works which the Father has given Me to finish—the very works that I do—bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me.36ἐγὼ δὲ ἔχω τὴν μαρτυρίαν μείζω τοῦ Ἰωάννου τὰ γὰρ ἔργα δέδωκέν μοι Πατὴρ ἵνα τελειώσω αὐτά αὐτὰ τὰ ἔργα ποιῶ μαρτυρεῖ περὶ ἐμοῦ ὅτι Πατήρ με ἀπέσταλκεν
And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form.37καὶ πέμψας με Πατὴρ ἐκεῖνος μεμαρτύρηκεν περὶ ἐμοῦ οὔτε φωνὴν αὐτοῦ πώποτε ἀκηκόατε οὔτε εἶδος αὐτοῦ ἑωράκατε
But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe.38καὶ τὸν λόγον αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἔχετε ἐν ὑμῖν μένοντα ὅτι ὃν ἀπέστειλεν ἐκεῖνος τούτῳ ὑμεῖς οὐ πιστεύετε
You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.39Ἐραυνᾶτε τὰς γραφάς ὅτι ὑμεῖς δοκεῖτε ἐν αὐταῖς ζωὴν αἰώνιον ἔχειν καὶ ἐκεῖναί εἰσιν αἱ μαρτυροῦσαι περὶ ἐμοῦ
But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.40καὶ οὐ θέλετε ἐλθεῖν πρός με ἵνα ζωὴν ἔχητε
“I do not receive honor from men.41Δόξαν παρὰ ἀνθρώπων οὐ λαμβάνω
But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you.42ἀλλὰ ἔγνωκα ὑμᾶς ὅτι τὴν ἀγάπην τοῦ Θεοῦ οὐκ ἔχετε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς
I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive.43ἐγὼ ἐλήλυθα ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Πατρός μου καὶ οὐ λαμβάνετέ με ἐὰν ἄλλος ἔλθῃ ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τῷ ἰδίῳ ἐκεῖνον λήμψεσθε
How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek the honor that comes from the only God?44πῶς δύνασθε ὑμεῖς πιστεῦσαι δόξαν παρὰ ἀλλήλων λαμβάνοντες καὶ τὴν δόξαν τὴν παρὰ τοῦ μόνου Θεοῦ οὐ ζητεῖτε
Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; there is one who accuses you—Moses, in whom you trust.45Μὴ δοκεῖτε ὅτι ἐγὼ κατηγορήσω ὑμῶν πρὸς τὸν Πατέρα ἔστιν κατηγορῶν ὑμῶν Μωϋσῆς εἰς ὃν ὑμεῖς ἠλπίκατε
For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me.46εἰ γὰρ ἐπιστεύετε Μωϋσεῖ ἐπιστεύετε ἂν ἐμοί περὶ γὰρ ἐμοῦ ἐκεῖνος ἔγραψεν
But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”47εἰ δὲ τοῖς ἐκείνου γράμμασιν οὐ πιστεύετε πῶς τοῖς ἐμοῖς ῥήμασιν πιστεύσετε
