Then the whole body of them got up and brought Him before Pilate.1Καὶ ἀναστὰν ἅπαν τὸ πλῆθος αὐτῶν ἤγαγον αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὸν Πιλᾶτον
And they began to accuse Him, saying, "We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is Christ, a King."2ἤρξαντο δὲ κατηγορεῖν αὐτοῦ λέγοντες Τοῦτον εὕραμεν διαστρέφοντα τὸ ἔθνος ἡμῶν καὶ κωλύοντα φόρους Καίσαρι διδόναι καὶ λέγοντα ἑαυτὸν Χριστὸν βασιλέα εἶναι
So Pilate asked Him, saying, "Are You the King of the Jews?" And He answered him and said, "It is as you say."3 δὲ Πιλᾶτος ἠρώτησεν αὐτὸν λέγων Σὺ εἶ Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς αὐτῷ ἔφη Σὺ λέγεις
Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, "I find no guilt in this man."4 δὲ Πιλᾶτος εἶπεν πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ τοὺς ὄχλους Οὐδὲν εὑρίσκω αἴτιον ἐν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τούτῳ
But they kept on insisting, saying, "He stirs up the people, teaching all over Judea, starting from Galilee even as far as this place."5Οἱ δὲ ἐπίσχυον λέγοντες ὅτι Ἀνασείει τὸν λαὸν διδάσκων καθ’ ὅλης τῆς Ἰουδαίας καὶ ἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ἕως ὧδε
When Pilate heard it, he asked whether the man was a Galilean.6Πιλᾶτος δὲ ἀκούσας ἐπηρώτησεν εἰ ἄνθρωπος Γαλιλαῖός ἐστιν
And when he learned that He belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who himself also was in Jerusalem at that time.7καὶ ἐπιγνοὺς ὅτι ἐκ τῆς ἐξουσίας Ἡρῴδου ἐστὶν ἀνέπεμψεν αὐτὸν πρὸς Ἡρῴδην ὄντα καὶ αὐτὸν ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις ἐν ταύταις ταῖς ἡμέραις
Now Herod was very glad when he saw Jesus; for he had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had been hearing about Him and was hoping to see some sign performed by Him.8 δὲ Ἡρῴδης ἰδὼν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐχάρη λίαν ἦν γὰρ ἐξ ἱκανῶν χρόνων θέλων ἰδεῖν αὐτὸν διὰ τὸ ἀκούειν περὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἤλπιζέν τι σημεῖον ἰδεῖν ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ γινόμενον
And he questioned Him at some length; but He answered him nothing.9ἐπηρώτα δὲ αὐτὸν ἐν λόγοις ἱκανοῖς αὐτὸς δὲ οὐδὲν ἀπεκρίνατο αὐτῷ
And the chief priests and the scribes were standing there, accusing Him vehemently.10Εἱστήκεισαν δὲ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς εὐτόνως κατηγοροῦντες αὐτοῦ
And Herod with his soldiers, after treating Him with contempt and mocking Him, dressed Him in a gorgeous robe and sent Him back to Pilate.11ἐξουθενήσας δὲ αὐτὸν ‹καὶ› Ἡρῴδης σὺν τοῖς στρατεύμασιν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐμπαίξας περιβαλὼν ἐσθῆτα λαμπρὰν ἀνέπεμψεν αὐτὸν τῷ Πιλάτῳ
Now Herod and Pilate became friends with one another that very day; for before they had been enemies with each other.12Ἐγένοντο δὲ φίλοι τε Ἡρῴδης καὶ Πιλᾶτος ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ μετ’ ἀλλήλων προϋπῆρχον γὰρ ἐν ἔχθρᾳ ὄντες πρὸς αὑτούς
Pilate summoned the chief priests and the rulers and the people,13Πιλᾶτος δὲ συνκαλεσάμενος τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ τοὺς ἄρχοντας καὶ τὸν λαὸν
and said to them, "You brought this man to me as one who incites the people to rebellion, and behold, having examined Him before you, I have found no guilt in this man regarding the charges which you make against Him.14εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Προσηνέγκατέ μοι τὸν ἄνθρωπον τοῦτον ὡς ἀποστρέφοντα τὸν λαόν καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐνώπιον ὑμῶν ἀνακρίνας οὐθὲν εὗρον ἐν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τούτῳ αἴτιον ὧν κατηγορεῖτε κατ’ αὐτοῦ
"No, nor has Herod, for he sent Him back to us; and behold, nothing deserving death has been done by Him.15ἀλλ’ οὐδὲ Ἡρῴδης ἀνέπεμψεν γὰρ αὐτὸν πρὸς ἡμᾶς καὶ ἰδοὺ οὐδὲν ἄξιον θανάτου ἐστὶν πεπραγμένον αὐτῷ
"Therefore I will punish Him and release Him."16παιδεύσας οὖν αὐτὸν ἀπολύσω
Now he was obliged to release to them at the feast one prisoner.17⧼Ἀνάγκην δὲ εἴχεν ἀπολύειν αὐτοῖς κατὰ ἑορτὴν ἕνα⧽
But they cried out all together, saying, "Away with this man, and release for us Barabbas!"18Ἀνέκραγον δὲ παμπληθεὶ* λέγοντες Αἶρε τοῦτον ἀπόλυσον δὲ ἡμῖν τὸν Βαραββᾶν
(He was one who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection made in the city, and for murder.)19ὅστις ἦν διὰ στάσιν τινὰ γενομένην ἐν τῇ πόλει καὶ φόνον βληθεὶς ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ
Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, addressed them again,20Πάλιν δὲ Πιλᾶτος προσεφώνησεν αὐτοῖς θέλων ἀπολῦσαι τὸν Ἰησοῦν
but they kept on calling out, saying, "Crucify, crucify Him!"21οἱ δὲ ἐπεφώνουν λέγοντες Σταύρου σταύρου αὐτόν
And he said to them the third time, "Why, what evil has this man done? I have found in Him no guilt demanding death; therefore I will punish Him and release Him."22 δὲ τρίτον εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Τί γὰρ κακὸν ἐποίησεν οὗτος οὐδὲν αἴτιον θανάτου εὗρον ἐν αὐτῷ παιδεύσας οὖν αὐτὸν ἀπολύσω
But they were insistent, with loud voices asking that He be crucified. And their voices began to prevail.23Οἱ δὲ ἐπέκειντο φωναῖς μεγάλαις αἰτούμενοι αὐτὸν σταυρωθῆναι καὶ κατίσχυον αἱ φωναὶ αὐτῶν ⧼καὶ τῶν ἀρχιερέων⧽
And Pilate pronounced sentence that their demand be granted.24καὶ Πιλᾶτος ἐπέκρινεν γενέσθαι τὸ αἴτημα αὐτῶν
And he released the man they were asking for who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, but he delivered Jesus to their will.25ἀπέλυσεν δὲ τὸν διὰ στάσιν καὶ φόνον βεβλημένον εἰς φυλακὴν ὃν ᾐτοῦντο τὸν δὲ Ἰησοῦν παρέδωκεν τῷ θελήματι αὐτῶν
When they led Him away, they seized a man, Simon of Cyrene, coming in from the country, and placed on him the cross to carry behind Jesus.26Καὶ ὡς ἀπήγαγον αὐτόν ἐπιλαβόμενοι Σίμωνά τινα Κυρηναῖον ἐρχόμενον ἀπ’ ἀγροῦ ἐπέθηκαν αὐτῷ τὸν σταυρὸν φέρειν ὄπισθεν τοῦ Ἰησοῦ
And following Him was a large crowd of the people, and of women who were mourning and lamenting Him.27Ἠκολούθει δὲ αὐτῷ πολὺ πλῆθος τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ γυναικῶν αἳ ἐκόπτοντο καὶ ἐθρήνουν αὐτόν
But Jesus turning to them said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, stop weeping for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.28στραφεὶς δὲ πρὸς αὐτὰς ‹ὁ› Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Θυγατέρες Ἰερουσαλήμ μὴ κλαίετε ἐπ’ ἐμέ πλὴν ἐφ’ ἑαυτὰς κλαίετε καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ τέκνα ὑμῶν
"For behold, the days are coming when they will say, 'Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.'29ὅτι ἰδοὺ ἔρχονται ἡμέραι ἐν αἷς ἐροῦσιν Μακάριαι αἱ στεῖραι καὶ αἱ κοιλίαι αἳ οὐκ ἐγέννησαν καὶ μαστοὶ οἳ οὐκ ἔθρεψαν
"Then they will begin TO SAY TO THE MOUNTAINS, 'FALL ON US,' AND TO THE HILLS, 'COVER US.'30τότε Ἄρξονται λέγειν τοῖς ὄρεσιν Πέσετε* ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς Καὶ τοῖς βουνοῖς Καλύψατε ἡμᾶς
"For if they do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?"31Ὅτι εἰ ἐν ‹τῷ› ὑγρῷ ξύλῳ ταῦτα ποιοῦσιν ἐν τῷ ξηρῷ τί γένηται
Two others also, who were criminals, were being led away to be put to death with Him.32Ἤγοντο δὲ καὶ ἕτεροι κακοῦργοι δύο σὺν αὐτῷ ἀναιρεθῆναι
When they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left.33Καὶ ὅτε ἦλθον ἐπὶ τὸν τόπον τὸν καλούμενον Κρανίον ἐκεῖ ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτὸν καὶ τοὺς κακούργους ὃν μὲν ἐκ δεξιῶν ὃν δὲ ἐξ ἀριστερῶν
But Jesus was saying, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing." And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves.34 δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἔλεγεν Πάτερ ἄφες αὐτοῖς οὐ γὰρ οἴδασιν τί ποιοῦσιν διαμεριζόμενοι δὲ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ ἔβαλον κλήρους
And the people stood by, looking on. And even the rulers were sneering at Him, saying, "He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is the Christ of God, His Chosen One."35Καὶ εἱστήκει λαὸς θεωρῶν ἐξεμυκτήριζον δὲ καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντες λέγοντες Ἄλλους ἔσωσεν σωσάτω ἑαυτόν εἰ οὗτός ἐστιν Χριστὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐκλεκτός
The soldiers also mocked Him, coming up to Him, offering Him sour wine,36Ἐνέπαιξαν δὲ αὐτῷ καὶ οἱ στρατιῶται προσερχόμενοι ὄξος προσφέροντες αὐτῷ
and saying, "If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!"37καὶ λέγοντες Εἰ σὺ εἶ Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων σῶσον σεαυτόν
Now there was also an inscription above Him, "THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS."38Ἦν δὲ καὶ ἐπιγραφὴ ἐπ’ αὐτῷ Ο* ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΤΩΝ ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ ΟΥΤΟΣ* {γράμμασιν Ἑλληνικοῖς καὶ Ρωμαϊκοῖς καὶ Ἑβραϊκοῖς}
One of the criminals who were hanged there was hurling abuse at Him, saying, "Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!"39Εἷς δὲ τῶν κρεμασθέντων κακούργων ἐβλασφήμει αὐτόν ‹λέγων› Οὐχὶ σὺ εἶ Χριστός σῶσον σεαυτὸν καὶ ἡμᾶς
But the other answered, and rebuking him said, "Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?40Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ἕτερος ἐπιτιμῶν αὐτῷ ἔφη Οὐδὲ φοβῇ σὺ τὸν Θεόν ὅτι ἐν τῷ αὐτῷ κρίματι εἶ
"And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong."41καὶ ἡμεῖς μὲν δικαίως ἄξια γὰρ ὧν ἐπράξαμεν ἀπολαμβάνομεν οὗτος δὲ οὐδὲν ἄτοπον ἔπραξεν
And he was saying, "Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!"42καὶ ἔλεγεν Ἰησοῦ μνήσθητί μου ὅταν ἔλθῃς εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν σου
And He said to him, "Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise."43Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἀμήν σοι λέγω σήμερον μετ’ ἐμοῦ ἔσῃ ἐν τῷ Παραδείσῳ
It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour,44Καὶ ἦν ἤδη ὡσεὶ ὥρα ἕκτη καὶ σκότος ἐγένετο ἐφ’ ὅλην τὴν γῆν ἕως ὥρας ἐνάτης
because the sun was obscured; and the veil of the temple was torn in two.45τοῦ ἡλίου ἐκλιπόντος ἐσχίσθη δὲ τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ μέσον
And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, "Father, INTO YOUR HANDS I COMMIT MY SPIRIT." Having said this, He breathed His last.46Καὶ φωνήσας φωνῇ μεγάλῃ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Πάτερ εἰς χεῖράς σου παρατίθεμαι τὸ πνεῦμά μου τοῦτο δὲ εἰπὼν ἐξέπνευσεν
Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he began praising God, saying, "Certainly this man was innocent."47Ἰδὼν δὲ ἑκατοντάρχης τὸ γενόμενον ἐδόξαζεν τὸν Θεὸν λέγων Ὄντως ἄνθρωπος οὗτος δίκαιος ἦν
And all the crowds who came together for this spectacle, when they observed what had happened, began to return, beating their breasts.48καὶ πάντες οἱ συμπαραγενόμενοι ὄχλοι ἐπὶ τὴν θεωρίαν ταύτην θεωρήσαντες τὰ γενόμενα τύπτοντες τὰ στήθη ὑπέστρεφον
And all His acquaintances and the women who accompanied Him from Galilee were standing at a distance, seeing these things.49εἱστήκεισαν δὲ πάντες οἱ γνωστοὶ αὐτῷ ἀπὸ μακρόθεν καὶ γυναῖκες αἱ συνακολουθοῦσαι αὐτῷ ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ὁρῶσαι ταῦτα
And a man named Joseph, who was a member of the Council, a good and righteous man50Καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀνὴρ ὀνόματι Ἰωσὴφ βουλευτὴς ὑπάρχων [καὶ] ἀνὴρ ἀγαθὸς καὶ δίκαιος
(he had not consented to their plan and action), a man from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who was waiting for the kingdom of God;51οὗτος οὐκ ἦν συνκατατεθειμένος τῇ βουλῇ καὶ τῇ πράξει αὐτῶν ἀπὸ Ἁριμαθαίας πόλεως τῶν Ἰουδαίων ὃς προσεδέχετο τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ
this man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.52οὗτος προσελθὼν τῷ Πιλάτῳ ᾐτήσατο τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ
And he took it down and wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid Him in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever lain.53καὶ καθελὼν ἐνετύλιξεν αὐτὸ σινδόνι καὶ ἔθηκεν αὐτὸν ἐν μνήματι λαξευτῷ οὗ οὐκ ἦν οὐδεὶς οὔπω κείμενος
It was the preparation day, and the Sabbath was about to begin.54καὶ ἡμέρα ἦν Παρασκευῆς καὶ σάββατον ἐπέφωσκεν
Now the women who had come with Him out of Galilee followed, and saw the tomb and how His body was laid.55Κατακολουθήσασαι δὲ αἱ γυναῖκες αἵτινες ἦσαν συνεληλυθυῖαι ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας αὐτῷ ἐθεάσαντο τὸ μνημεῖον καὶ ὡς ἐτέθη τὸ σῶμα αὐτοῦ
Then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes. And on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.56ὑποστρέψασαι δὲ ἡτοίμασαν ἀρώματα καὶ μύρα Καὶ τὸ μὲν σάββατον ἡσύχασαν κατὰ τὴν ἐντολήν
