The Faith of the Centurion
(Matthew 8:5-13; John 4:43-54)

1Ἐπειδὴ (And when) ἐπλήρωσεν (He had completed) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) ῥήματα (words) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (in) τὰς (the) ἀκοὰς (hearing) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people), εἰσῆλθεν (He entered) εἰς (into) Καφαρναούμ (Capernaum). 2Ἑκατοντάρχου (Of a centurion) δέ (then) τινος (a certain) δοῦλος (servant), κακῶς (sick) ἔχων (being), ἤμελλεν (was about) τελευτᾶν (to die), ὃς (who) ἦν (was) αὐτῷ (to him) ἔντιμος (valued highly). 3ἀκούσας (Having heard) δὲ (then) περὶ (about) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ἀπέστειλεν (he sent) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) πρεσβυτέρους (elders) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews), ἐρωτῶν (begging) αὐτὸν (Him) ὅπως (that) ἐλθὼν (having come), διασώσῃ (He might save) τὸν (the) δοῦλον (servant) αὐτοῦ (of him). 4οἱ (-) δὲ (And) παραγενόμενοι (having come) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), παρεκάλουν (they were begging) αὐτὸν (Him) σπουδαίως (earnestly), λέγοντες (saying) ὅτι (that), “Ἄξιός (Worthy) ἐστιν (he is), ᾧ (to whom) παρέξῃ (You will grant) τοῦτο (this); 5ἀγαπᾷ (he loves) γὰρ (for) τὸ (the) ἔθνος (nation) ἡμῶν (of us), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) συναγωγὴν (synagogue) αὐτὸς (he) ᾠκοδόμησεν (built) ἡμῖν (for us).”

6Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐπορεύετο (was going) σὺν (with) αὐτοῖς (them). ἤδη (Already) δὲ (then), αὐτοῦ (He) οὐ (not) μακρὰν (far) ἀπέχοντος (being distant) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) οἰκίας (house), ἔπεμψεν (sent) φίλους (friends) ὁ (the) ἑκατοντάρχης (centurion), λέγων (saying) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Κύριε (Lord), μὴ (not) σκύλλου (trouble Yourself), οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) ἱκανός (worthy) εἰμι (I am) ἵνα (that) ὑπὸ (under) τὴν (the) στέγην (roof) μου (of me) εἰσέλθῃς (You should come); 7διὸ (therefore) οὐδὲ (neither) ἐμαυτὸν (myself) ἠξίωσα (counted I worthy) πρὸς (to) σὲ (You) ἐλθεῖν (to come); ἀλλὰ (but) εἰπὲ (say) λόγῳ (in a word), καὶ (and) ἰαθήτω (shall be healed) ὁ (the) παῖς (servant) μου (of me). 8καὶ (Also) γὰρ (for) ἐγὼ (I) ἄνθρωπός (a man) εἰμι (am) ὑπὸ (under) ἐξουσίαν (authority) τασσόμενος (appointed), ἔχων (having) ὑπ’ (under) ἐμαυτὸν (me) στρατιώτας (soldiers); καὶ (and) λέγω (I say) τούτῳ (to this one), ‘Πορεύθητι (Go),’ καὶ (and) πορεύεται (he goes); καὶ (and) ἄλλῳ (to another), ‘Ἔρχου (Come),’ καὶ (and) ἔρχεται (he comes); καὶ (and) τῷ (to) δούλῳ (the servant) μου (of me), ‘Ποίησον (Do) τοῦτο (this),’ καὶ (and) ποιεῖ (he does it).”

9Ἀκούσας (Having heard) δὲ (then) ταῦτα (these things), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐθαύμασεν (marveled at) αὐτόν (him); καὶ (and) στραφεὶς (having turned) τῷ (to the) ἀκολουθοῦντι (following) αὐτῷ (Him) ὄχλῳ (crowd), εἶπεν (He said), “Λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), οὐδὲ (not even) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Ἰσραὴλ (Israel) τοσαύτην (such great) πίστιν (faith) εὗρον (did I find).” 10καὶ (And) ὑποστρέψαντες (having returned) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house), οἱ (those) πεμφθέντες (having been sent) εὗρον (found) τὸν (the) δοῦλον (servant) ὑγιαίνοντα (in good health).

Jesus Raises a Widow's Son

11Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) ἐν (on) τῷ (the) ἑξῆς (next day), ἐπορεύθη (He went) εἰς (into) πόλιν (a town) καλουμένην (called) Ναΐν (Nain), καὶ (and) συνεπορεύοντο (were going with) αὐτῷ (Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) ὄχλος (a crowd) πολύς (great). 12ὡς (As) δὲ (then) ἤγγισεν (He drew near) τῇ (to the) πύλῃ (gate) τῆς (of the) πόλεως (town), καὶ (also) ἰδοὺ (behold), ἐξεκομίζετο (was being carried out) τεθνηκὼς (one having died), μονογενὴς (only begotten) υἱὸς (son) τῇ (of the) μητρὶ (mother) αὐτοῦ (of him); καὶ (and) αὐτὴ (she) ἦν (was) χήρα (a widow). καὶ (And) ὄχλος (a crowd) τῆς (of the) πόλεως (town), ἱκανὸς (considerable), ἦν (was) σὺν (with) αὐτῇ (her). 13καὶ (And) ἰδὼν (having seen) αὐτὴν (her), ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) ἐσπλαγχνίσθη (was moved with compassion) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτῇ (her), καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῇ (to her), “Μὴ (Not) κλαῖε (weep).”

14Καὶ (And) προσελθὼν (having come up), ἥψατο (He touched) τῆς (the) σοροῦ (bier); οἱ (those) δὲ (then) βαστάζοντες (bearing it) ἔστησαν (stopped). καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He said), “Νεανίσκε (Young man), σοὶ (to you) λέγω (I say), ἐγέρθητι (Arise)!” 15καὶ (And) ἀνεκάθισεν (sat up) ὁ (the) νεκρὸς (dead man), καὶ (and) ἤρξατο (began) λαλεῖν (to speak), καὶ (and) ἔδωκεν (He gave) αὐτὸν (him) τῇ (to the) μητρὶ (mother) αὐτοῦ (of him).

16Ἔλαβεν (Seized) δὲ (then) φόβος (fear) πάντας (all), καὶ (and) ἐδόξαζον (they began glorifying) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), λέγοντες (saying) ὅτι (-), “Προφήτης (A prophet) μέγας (great) ἠγέρθη (has risen up) ἐν (among) ἡμῖν (us)!” καὶ (and) ὅτι (-), “Ἐπεσκέψατο (Has visited) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (the) λαὸν (people) αὐτοῦ (of Him)!” 17καὶ (And) ἐξῆλθεν (went out) ὁ (the) λόγος (report) οὗτος (this) ἐν (in) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (-) Ἰουδαίᾳ (Judea) περὶ (concerning) αὐτοῦ (Him), καὶ (and) πάσῃ (in all) τῇ (the) περιχώρῳ (surrounding region).

20Παραγενόμενοι (Having come) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him), οἱ (the) ἄνδρες (men) εἶπαν (said), “Ἰωάννης (John) ὁ (the) Βαπτιστὴς (Baptist) ἀπέστειλεν (has sent) ἡμᾶς (us) πρὸς (to) σὲ (you), λέγων (saying), ‘Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) ἐρχόμενος (coming One), ἢ (or) ἄλλον (another) προσδοκῶμεν (are we to look for)?’”

21Ἐν (At) ἐκείνῃ (that very) τῇ (-) ὥρᾳ (hour), ἐθεράπευσεν (He healed) πολλοὺς (many) ἀπὸ (of) νόσων (diseases), καὶ (and) μαστίγων (afflictions), καὶ (and) πνευμάτων (spirits) πονηρῶν (evil), καὶ (and) τυφλοῖς (to blind) πολλοῖς (many) ἐχαρίσατο (He granted) βλέπειν (to see). 22καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Πορευθέντες (Having gone), ἀπαγγείλατε (relate) Ἰωάννῃ (to John) ἃ (what) εἴδετε (you have seen) καὶ (and) ἠκούσατε (heard): τυφλοὶ (Blind) ἀναβλέπουσιν (receive sight), χωλοὶ (lame) περιπατοῦσιν (walk), λεπροὶ (lepers)a καθαρίζονται (are cleansed), καὶ (and) κωφοὶ (deaf) ἀκούουσιν (hear), νεκροὶ (dead) ἐγείρονται (are raised), πτωχοὶ (poor) εὐαγγελίζονται (are gospelized). 23καὶ (And) μακάριός (blessed) ἐστιν (is) ὃς (who) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) σκανδαλισθῇ (shall be offended) ἐν (in) ἐμοί (Me).”

24Ἀπελθόντων (Having departed) δὲ (then) τῶν (the) ἀγγέλων (messengers) Ἰωάννου (of John), ἤρξατο (He began) λέγειν (to speak) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds) περὶ (concerning) Ἰωάννου (John): “Τί (What) ἐξήλθατε (have you gone out) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) ἔρημον (wilderness) θεάσασθαι (to see)? κάλαμον (A reed) ὑπὸ (by) ἀνέμου (the wind) σαλευόμενον (shaken)? 25ἀλλὰ (But) τί (what) ἐξήλθατε (have you gone out) ἰδεῖν (to see)? ἄνθρωπον (A man) ἐν (in) μαλακοῖς (fine) ἱματίοις (clothing) ἠμφιεσμένον (arrayed)? ἰδοὺ (Behold), οἱ (those) ἐν (in) ἱματισμῷ (clothing) ἐνδόξῳ (splendid) καὶ (and) τρυφῇ (in luxury) ὑπάρχοντες (living), ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) βασιλείοις (palaces) εἰσίν (are).

26Ἀλλὰ (But) τί (what) ἐξήλθατε (have you gone out) ἰδεῖν (to see)? προφήτην (A prophet)? ναί (Yes), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), καὶ (and one) περισσότερον (more excellent) προφήτου (than a prophet). 27οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is he) περὶ (concerning) οὗ (whom) γέγραπται (it has been written):

‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἀποστέλλω (I send) τὸν (the) ἄγγελόν (messenger) μου (of Me) πρὸ (before) προσώπου (the face) σου (of you),

Ὃς (who) κατασκευάσει (will prepare) τὴν (the) ὁδόν (way) σου (of You) ἔμπροσθέν (before) σου (You).’b

28Λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), μείζων (a greater) ἐν (among) γεννητοῖς (those born) γυναικῶν (of women) Ἰωάννου (than John) οὐδείς (no one) ἐστιν (is); ὁ (-) δὲ (yet) μικρότερος (the least) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τοῦ (of) Θεοῦ (God), μείζων (greater) αὐτοῦ (than he) ἐστιν (is).”

29Καὶ (And) πᾶς (all) ὁ (the) λαὸς (people) ἀκούσας (having heard), καὶ (even) οἱ (the) τελῶναι (tax collectors), ἐδικαίωσαν (declared as righteous) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), βαπτισθέντες (having been baptized with) τὸ (the) βάπτισμα (baptism) Ἰωάννου (of John); 30οἱ (-) δὲ (but) Φαρισαῖοι (the Pharisees) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) νομικοὶ (lawyers), τὴν (the) βουλὴν (counsel) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἠθέτησαν (rejected) εἰς (as to) ἑαυτούς (themselves), μὴ (not) βαπτισθέντες (having been baptized) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (him).

31“Τίνι (To what) οὖν (therefore) ὁμοιώσω (will I liken) τοὺς (the) ἀνθρώπους (men) τῆς (of the) γενεᾶς (generation) ταύτης (this)? καὶ (And) τίνι (to what) εἰσὶν (are they) ὅμοιοι (like)? 32ὅμοιοί (Like) εἰσιν (are they) παιδίοις (to little children) τοῖς (-) ἐν (in) ἀγορᾷ (the marketplace) καθημένοις (sitting), καὶ (and) προσφωνοῦσιν (calling) ἀλλήλοις (to each other) ἃ (one), λέγει (saying):

‘Ηὐλήσαμεν (We piped) ὑμῖν (to you), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ὠρχήσασθε (you did dance);

Ἐθρηνήσαμεν (we sang a dirge), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐκλαύσατε (you did weep).’

33Ἐλήλυθεν (Has come) γὰρ (for) Ἰωάννης (John) ὁ (the) Βαπτιστὴς (Baptist), μὴ (neither) ἐσθίων (eating) ἄρτον (bread), μήτε (nor) πίνων (drinking) οἶνον (wine), καὶ (and) λέγετε (you say), ‘Δαιμόνιον (A demon) ἔχει (He has).’ 34ἐλήλυθεν (Has come) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man), ἐσθίων (eating) καὶ (and) πίνων (drinking), καὶ (and) λέγετε (you say), ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἄνθρωπος (a man), φάγος (a glutton) καὶ (and) οἰνοπότης (a drunkard), φίλος (a friend) τελωνῶν (of tax collectors) καὶ (and) ἁμαρτωλῶν (of sinners).’ 35καὶ (And) ἐδικαιώθη (was justified) ἡ (-) σοφία (wisdom) ἀπὸ (by) πάντων (all) τῶν (the) τέκνων (children) αὐτῆς (of her).”

36Ἠρώτα (Was asking) δέ (now) τις (one) αὐτὸν (Him) τῶν (of the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees), ἵνα (that) φάγῃ (He should eat) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him); καὶ (and) εἰσελθὼν (having entered) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) τοῦ (of the) Φαρισαίου (Pharisee), κατεκλίθη (He reclined). 37καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), γυνὴ (a woman) ἥτις (who) ἦν (was) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πόλει (city), ἁμαρτωλός (a sinner). καὶ (And) ἐπιγνοῦσα (she having known) ὅτι (that) κατάκειται (He had reclined) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) οἰκίᾳ (house) τοῦ (of the) Φαρισαίου (Pharisee), κομίσασα (having taken) ἀλάβαστρον (an alabaster flask) μύρου (of fragrant oil), 38καὶ (and) στᾶσα (having stood) ὀπίσω (behind Him) παρὰ (at) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) αὐτοῦ (of Him) κλαίουσα (weeping), τοῖς (the) δάκρυσιν (tears) ἤρξατο (she began) βρέχειν (to wet) τοὺς (with the) πόδας (feet) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) ταῖς (with the) θριξὶν (hairs) τῆς (of the) κεφαλῆς (head) αὐτῆς (of her), ἐξέμασσεν (she was wiping them), καὶ (and) κατεφίλει (was kissing) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) ἤλειφεν (was anointing them) τῷ (with the) μύρῳ (fragrant oil).

39Ἰδὼν (Having seen) δὲ (now) ὁ (the) Φαρισαῖος (Pharisee), ὁ (the one) καλέσας (having invited) αὐτὸν (Him), εἶπεν (he spoke) ἐν (within) ἑαυτῷ (himself), λέγων (saying), “Οὗτος (This), εἰ (if) ἦν (He were) προφήτης (a prophet), ἐγίνωσκεν (would have known) ἂν (-) τίς (who) καὶ (and) ποταπὴ (what) ἡ (the) γυνὴ (woman is) ἥτις (who) ἅπτεται (touches) αὐτοῦ (Him), ὅτι (for) ἁμαρτωλός (a sinner) ἐστιν (she is).”

40Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (him), “Σίμων (Simon), ἔχω (I have) σοί (to you) τι (something) εἰπεῖν (to say).”

Ὁ (-) δέ (And), “Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), εἰπέ (say it),” φησίν (he says).

41“Δύο (Two) χρεοφειλέται (debtors) ἦσαν (there were) δανιστῇ (to a creditor) τινι (certain); ὁ (the) εἷς (one) ὤφειλεν (owed) δηνάρια (denarii)c πεντακόσια (five hundred); ὁ (-) δὲ (and) ἕτερος (the other), πεντήκοντα (fifty). 42μὴ (Nothing) ἐχόντων (having) αὐτῶν (they) ἀποδοῦναι (to pay), ἀμφοτέροις (both) ἐχαρίσατο (he forgave). τίς (Which) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῶν (of them), πλεῖον (more) ἀγαπήσει (will love) αὐτόν (him)?”

43Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering), Σίμων (Simon) εἶπεν (said), “Ὑπολαμβάνω (I take it) ὅτι (that) ᾧ (he to whom) τὸ (the) πλεῖον (most) ἐχαρίσατο (he forgave).”

Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ὀρθῶς (Rightly) ἔκρινας (You have judged).”

44Καὶ (And) στραφεὶς (having turned) πρὸς (to) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (woman), τῷ (-) Σίμωνι (to Simon) ἔφη (He was saying), “Βλέπεις (See you) ταύτην (this) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (woman)? εἰσῆλθόν (I entered) σου (of you) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) οἰκίαν (house), ὕδωρ (water) μοι (of Me) ἐπὶ (for) πόδας (feet) οὐκ (not) ἔδωκας (you gave); αὕτη (with her) δὲ (however) τοῖς (-) δάκρυσιν (tears) ἔβρεξέν (she wet) μου (My) τοὺς (-) πόδας (feet), καὶ (and) ταῖς (with) θριξὶν (the hair) αὐτῆς (of her) ἐξέμαξεν (wiped them). 45φίλημά (A kiss) μοι (to Me) οὐκ (not) ἔδωκας (you gave); αὕτη (she herself) δὲ (however), ἀφ’ (from) ἧς (which time) εἰσῆλθον (I came in), οὐ (not) διέλιπεν (has ceased) καταφιλοῦσά (kissing) μου (My) τοὺς (-) πόδας (feet). 46ἐλαίῳ (With oil) τὴν (the) κεφαλήν (head) μου (of Me) οὐκ (not) ἤλειψας (you did anoint); αὕτη (she herself) δὲ (however), μύρῳ (with fragrant oil) ἤλειψεν (anointed) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) μου (of Me). 47οὗ (This) χάριν (therefore) λέγω (I say) σοι (to you), ἀφέωνται (have been forgiven) αἱ (the) ἁμαρτίαι (sins) αὐτῆς (of her) αἱ (-) πολλαί (many), ὅτι (for) ἠγάπησεν (she loved) πολύ (much); ᾧ (to whom) δὲ (however) ὀλίγον (little) ἀφίεται (is forgiven), ὀλίγον (little) ἀγαπᾷ (he loves).”

48Εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (then) αὐτῇ (to her), “Ἀφέωνταί (Have been forgiven) σου (your) αἱ (-) ἁμαρτίαι (sins).”

49Καὶ (And) ἤρξαντο (began) οἱ (those) συνανακείμενοι (reclining) λέγειν (to say) ἐν (within) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves), “Τίς (Who) οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) ὃς (who) καὶ (even) ἁμαρτίας (sins) ἀφίησιν (forgives)?”

50Εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (woman), “Ἡ (The) πίστις (faith) σου (of You) σέσωκέν (has saved) σε (you); πορεύου (go) εἰς (in) εἰρήνην (peace).”
