In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.1Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν Λόγος καὶ Λόγος ἦν πρὸς τὸν Θεόν καὶ Θεὸς ἦν Λόγος
He was in the beginning with God.2Οὗτος ἦν ἐν ἀρχῇ πρὸς τὸν Θεόν
All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.3πάντα δι’ αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο καὶ χωρὶς αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο οὐδὲ ἕν γέγονεν
In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.4ἐν αὐτῷ ζωὴ ἦν καὶ ζωὴ ἦν τὸ φῶς τῶν ἀνθρώπων
And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.5καὶ τὸ φῶς ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ φαίνει καὶ σκοτία αὐτὸ οὐ κατέλαβεν
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.6Ἐγένετο ἄνθρωπος ἀπεσταλμένος παρὰ Θεοῦ ὄνομα αὐτῷ Ἰωάννης
This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe.7οὗτος ἦλθεν εἰς μαρτυρίαν ἵνα μαρτυρήσῃ περὶ τοῦ φωτός ἵνα πάντες πιστεύσωσιν δι’ αὐτοῦ
He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.8οὐκ ἦν ἐκεῖνος τὸ φῶς ἀλλ’ ἵνα μαρτυρήσῃ περὶ τοῦ φωτός
That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.9Ἦν τὸ φῶς τὸ ἀληθινὸν φωτίζει πάντα ἄνθρωπον ἐρχόμενον εἰς τὸν κόσμον
He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.10ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ ἦν καὶ κόσμος δι’ αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο καὶ κόσμος αὐτὸν οὐκ ἔγνω
He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.11εἰς τὰ ἴδια ἦλθεν καὶ οἱ ἴδιοι αὐτὸν οὐ παρέλαβον
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:12ὅσοι δὲ ἔλαβον αὐτόν ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς ἐξουσίαν τέκνα Θεοῦ γενέσθαι τοῖς πιστεύουσιν εἰς τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ
who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.13οἳ οὐκ ἐξ αἱμάτων οὐδὲ ἐκ θελήματος σαρκὸς οὐδὲ ἐκ θελήματος ἀνδρὸς ἀλλ’ ἐκ Θεοῦ ἐγεννήθησαν
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.14Καὶ Λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο καὶ ἐσκήνωσεν ἐν ἡμῖν καὶ ἐθεασάμεθα τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦ δόξαν ὡς μονογενοῦς παρὰ Πατρός πλήρης χάριτος καὶ ἀληθείας
John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ ”15Ἰωάννης μαρτυρεῖ περὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ κέκραγεν λέγων Οὗτος ἦν ὃν εἶπον ὀπίσω μου ἐρχόμενος ἔμπροσθέν μου γέγονεν ὅτι πρῶτός μου ἦν
And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.16Ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ πληρώματος αὐτοῦ ἡμεῖς πάντες ἐλάβομεν καὶ χάριν ἀντὶ χάριτος
For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.17ὅτι νόμος διὰ Μωϋσέως ἐδόθη χάρις καὶ ἀλήθεια διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐγένετο
No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.18Θεὸν οὐδεὶς ἑώρακεν πώποτε μονογενὴς Θεὸς ὢν εἰς τὸν κόλπον τοῦ Πατρὸς ἐκεῖνος ἐξηγήσατο
Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”19Καὶ αὕτη ἐστὶν μαρτυρία τοῦ Ἰωάννου ὅτε ἀπέστειλαν πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἐξ Ἱεροσολύμων ἱερεῖς καὶ Λευίτας ἵνα ἐρωτήσωσιν αὐτόν Σὺ τίς εἶ
He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”20καὶ ὡμολόγησεν καὶ οὐκ ἠρνήσατο καὶ ὡμολόγησεν ὅτι Ἐγὼ οὐκ εἰμὶ Χριστός
And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”21Καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτόν Τί οὖν σὺ Ἠλίας εἶ Καὶ λέγει Οὐκ εἰμί προφήτης εἶ σύ Καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Οὔ
Then they said to him, “Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?”22Εἶπαν οὖν αὐτῷ Τίς εἶ ἵνα ἀπόκρισιν δῶμεν τοῖς πέμψασιν ἡμᾶς τί λέγεις περὶ σεαυτοῦ
He said: “I am ‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Make straight the way of the LORD,” ’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”23Ἔφη Ἐγὼ φωνὴ βοῶντος ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ Εὐθύνατε τὴν ὁδὸν Κυρίου καθὼς εἶπεν Ἠσαΐας προφήτης
Now those who were sent were from the Pharisees.24Καὶ ἀπεσταλμένοι ἦσαν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων
And they asked him, saying, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”25καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Τί οὖν βαπτίζεις εἰ σὺ οὐκ εἶ Χριστὸς οὐδὲ Ἠλίας οὐδὲ προφήτης
John answered them, saying, “I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know.26Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς Ἰωάννης λέγων Ἐγὼ βαπτίζω ἐν ὕδατι μέσος ὑμῶν ἕστηκεν* ὃν ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε
It is He who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose.”27 ὀπίσω μου ἐρχόμενος οὗ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἐγὼ ἄξιος ἵνα λύσω αὐτοῦ τὸν ἱμάντα τοῦ ὑποδήματος
These things were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.28Ταῦτα ἐν Βηθανίᾳ ἐγένετο πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου ὅπου ἦν Ἰωάννης βαπτίζων
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!29Τῇ ἐπαύριον βλέπει τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐρχόμενον πρὸς αὐτόν καὶ λέγει Ἴδε Ἀμνὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ αἴρων τὴν ἁμαρτίαν τοῦ κόσμου
This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’30οὗτός ἐστιν ὑπὲρ οὗ ἐγὼ εἶπον Ὀπίσω μου ἔρχεται ἀνὴρ ὃς ἔμπροσθέν μου γέγονεν ὅτι πρῶτός μου ἦν
I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.”31κἀγὼ οὐκ ᾔδειν αὐτόν ἀλλ’ ἵνα φανερωθῇ τῷ Ἰσραὴλ διὰ τοῦτο ἦλθον ἐγὼ ἐν ὕδατι βαπτίζων
And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him.32Καὶ ἐμαρτύρησεν Ἰωάννης λέγων ὅτι Τεθέαμαι τὸ Πνεῦμα καταβαῖνον ὡς περιστερὰν ἐξ οὐρανοῦ καὶ ἔμεινεν ἐπ’ αὐτόν
I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’33κἀγὼ οὐκ ᾔδειν αὐτόν ἀλλ’ πέμψας με βαπτίζειν ἐν ὕδατι ἐκεῖνός μοι εἶπεν Ἐφ’ ὃν ἂν ἴδῃς τὸ Πνεῦμα καταβαῖνον καὶ μένον ἐπ’ αὐτόν οὗτός ἐστιν βαπτίζων ἐν Πνεύματι Ἁγίῳ
And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”34κἀγὼ ἑώρακα καὶ μεμαρτύρηκα ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ
Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples.35Τῇ ἐπαύριον πάλιν εἱστήκει Ἰωάννης καὶ ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ δύο
And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!”36καὶ ἐμβλέψας τῷ Ἰησοῦ περιπατοῦντι λέγει Ἴδε Ἀμνὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ
The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.37καὶ ἤκουσαν οἱ δύο μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος καὶ ἠκολούθησαν τῷ Ἰησοῦ
Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), “where are You staying?”38Στραφεὶς δὲ Ἰησοῦς καὶ θεασάμενος αὐτοὺς ἀκολουθοῦντας λέγει αὐτοῖς Τί ζητεῖτε Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Ῥαββί λέγεται μεθερμηνευόμενον Διδάσκαλε Ποῦ μένεις
He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour).39Λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἔρχεσθε καὶ ὄψεσθε ἦλθαν οὖν καὶ εἶδαν ποῦ μένει καὶ παρ’ αὐτῷ ἔμειναν τὴν ἡμέραν ἐκείνην ὥρα ἦν ὡς δεκάτη
One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.40Ἦν Ἀνδρέας ἀδελφὸς Σίμωνος Πέτρου εἷς ἐκ τῶν δύο τῶν ἀκουσάντων παρὰ Ἰωάννου καὶ ἀκολουθησάντων αὐτῷ
He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ).41εὑρίσκει οὗτος πρῶτον τὸν ἀδελφὸν τὸν ἴδιον Σίμωνα καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Εὑρήκαμεν τὸν Μεσσίαν ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον Χριστός
And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, “You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” (which is translated, A Stone).42ἤγαγεν αὐτὸν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐμβλέψας αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Σὺ εἶ Σίμων υἱὸς Ἰωάννου σὺ κληθήσῃ Κηφᾶς ἑρμηνεύεται Πέτρος
The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.”43Τῇ ἐπαύριον ἠθέλησεν ἐξελθεῖν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν καὶ εὑρίσκει Φίλιππον καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Ἀκολούθει μοι
Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.44ἦν δὲ Φίλιππος ἀπὸ Βηθσαϊδά ἐκ τῆς πόλεως Ἀνδρέου καὶ Πέτρου
Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”45Εὑρίσκει Φίλιππος τὸν Ναθαναὴλ καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ὃν ἔγραψεν Μωϋσῆς ἐν τῷ νόμῳ καὶ οἱ προφῆται εὑρήκαμεν Ἰησοῦν υἱὸν τοῦ Ἰωσὴφ τὸν ἀπὸ Ναζαρέτ
And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”46Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ Ἐκ Ναζαρὲτ δύναταί τι ἀγαθὸν εἶναι Λέγει αὐτῷ Φίλιππος Ἔρχου καὶ ἴδε
Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!”47Εἶδεν ‹ὁ› Ἰησοῦς τὸν Ναθαναὴλ ἐρχόμενον πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ λέγει περὶ αὐτοῦ Ἴδε ἀληθῶς Ἰσραηλίτης ἐν δόλος οὐκ ἔστιν
Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”48Λέγει αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ Πόθεν με γινώσκεις Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Πρὸ τοῦ σε Φίλιππον φωνῆσαι ὄντα ὑπὸ τὴν συκῆν εἶδόν σε
Nathanael answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”49Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ Ῥαββί σὺ εἶ Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ σὺ Βασιλεὺς εἶ τοῦ Ἰσραήλ
Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”50Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ὅτι εἶπόν σοι ὅτι εἶδόν σε ὑποκάτω τῆς συκῆς πιστεύεις μείζω τούτων ὄψῃ
And He said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”51καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὄψεσθε τὸν οὐρανὸν ἀνεῳγότα καὶ τοὺς ἀγγέλους τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀναβαίνοντας καὶ καταβαίνοντας ἐπὶ τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
