1Ἐπειδήπερ (Inasmuch as) πολλοὶ (many) ἐπεχείρησαν (have undertaken) ἀνατάξασθαι (to draw up) διήγησιν (a narration) περὶ (concerning) τῶν (the) πεπληροφορημένων (having been accomplished) ἐν (among) ἡμῖν (us) πραγμάτων (things),
2καθὼς (as) παρέδοσαν (delivered them) ἡμῖν (to us) οἱ (those) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning) αὐτόπται (eyewitnesses) καὶ (and) ὑπηρέται (servants) γενόμενοι (having been) τοῦ (of the) λόγου (word),
3ἔδοξε (it seemed good) κἀμοὶ (also to me), παρηκολουθηκότι (having been acquainted) ἄνωθεν (from the first) πᾶσιν (with all things), ἀκριβῶς (carefully) καθεξῆς (with method) σοι (to you) γράψαι (to write), κράτιστε (most excellent) Θεόφιλε (Theophilus),
4ἵνα (so that) ἐπιγνῷς (you may know) περὶ (concerning) ὧν (which) κατηχήθης (you were instructed), λόγων (of the things), τὴν (the) ἀσφάλειαν (certainty).

5Ἐγένετο (There was) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) Ἡρῴδου (of Herod) βασιλέως (king) τῆς (-) Ἰουδαίας (of Judea) ἱερεύς (a priest) τις (certain), ὀνόματι (named) Ζαχαρίας (Zechariah), ἐξ (of the) ἐφημερίας (division) Ἀβιά (of Abijah), καὶ (and) γυνὴ (wife) αὐτῷ (of him) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) θυγατέρων (daughters) Ἀαρών (of Aaron), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) αὐτῆς (of her) Ἐλισάβετ (Elizabeth).
6ἦσαν (They were) δὲ (now) δίκαιοι (righteous) ἀμφότεροι (both) ἐναντίον (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), πορευόμενοι (walking) ἐν (in) πάσαις (all) ταῖς (the) ἐντολαῖς (commandments) καὶ (and) δικαιώμασιν (ordinances) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἄμεμπτοι (blameless).
7καὶ (And) οὐκ (no) ἦν (there was) αὐτοῖς (to them) τέκνον (child), καθότι (inasmuch as) ἦν (was) ἡ (-) Ἐλισάβετ (Elizabeth) στεῖρα (barren), καὶ (and) ἀμφότεροι (both) προβεβηκότες (advanced) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (years) αὐτῶν (of them) ἦσαν (were).
8Ἐγένετο (It came to pass) δὲ (now) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερατεύειν (fulfilling the priestly service) αὐτὸν (of him), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) τάξει (order) τῆς (of the) ἐφημερίας (division) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἔναντι (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God),
9κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) ἔθος (custom) τῆς (of the) ἱερατείας (priesthood), ἔλαχε (it fell to him by lot) τοῦ (-) θυμιᾶσαι (to burn incense), εἰσελθὼν (having entered) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) ναὸν (temple) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord).
10καὶ (And) πᾶν (all) τὸ (the) πλῆθος (multitude) ἦν (were) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people) προσευχόμενον (praying) ἔξω (outside) τῇ (at the) ὥρᾳ (hour) τοῦ (of the) θυμιάματος (incense).
11Ὤφθη (Appeared) δὲ (then) αὐτῷ (to him) ἄγγελος (an angel) Κυρίου (of the Lord), ἑστὼς (standing) ἐκ (at) δεξιῶν (the right) τοῦ (of the) θυσιαστηρίου (altar) τοῦ (of the) θυμιάματος (incense).
12καὶ (And) ἐταράχθη (was troubled) Ζαχαρίας (Zechariah) ἰδών (having seen him), καὶ (and) φόβος (fear) ἐπέπεσεν (fell) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτόν (him).
13Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) ὁ (the) ἄγγελος (angel), “Μὴ (Not) φοβοῦ (fear), Ζαχαρία (Zechariah), διότι (because) εἰσηκούσθη (has been heard) ἡ (the) δέησίς (prayer) σου (of you), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) γυνή (wife) σου (of You) Ἐλισάβετ (Elizabeth) γεννήσει (will bear) υἱόν (a son) σοι (to you), καὶ (and) καλέσεις (you shall call) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) αὐτοῦ (of him) Ἰωάννην (John).
14καὶ (And) ἔσται (he will be) χαρά (joy) σοι (to you) καὶ (and) ἀγαλλίασις (gladness), καὶ (and) πολλοὶ (many) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) γενέσει (birth) αὐτοῦ (of him) χαρήσονται (will rejoice).
15ἔσται (He will be) γὰρ (for) μέγας (great) ἐνώπιον (before) ‹τοῦ› (the) Κυρίου (Lord); καὶ (and) οἶνον (wine) καὶ (and) σίκερα (strong drink) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) πίῃ (shall he drink), καὶ (and) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy) πλησθήσεται (he will be filled) ἔτι (even) ἐκ (from) κοιλίας (the womb) μητρὸς (of the mother) αὐτοῦ (of him).
16καὶ (And) πολλοὺς (many) τῶν (of the) υἱῶν (sons) Ἰσραὴλ (of Israel) ἐπιστρέψει (he will turn) ἐπὶ (to) Κύριον (the Lord), τὸν (the) Θεὸν (God) αὐτῶν (of them).
17καὶ (And) αὐτὸς (he) προελεύσεται (will go forth) ἐνώπιον (before) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἐν (in) πνεύματι (the spirit) καὶ (and) δυνάμει (power) Ἠλίου (of Elijah), ἐπιστρέψαι (to turn) καρδίας (the hearts) πατέρων (of the fathers) ἐπὶ (to) τέκνα (the children), καὶ (and) ἀπειθεῖς (the disobedient) ἐν (to) φρονήσει (the wisdom) δικαίων (of the righteous), ἑτοιμάσαι (to make ready) Κυρίῳ (for the Lord) λαὸν (a people) κατεσκευασμένον (prepared).”
18Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (said) Ζαχαρίας (Zechariah) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) ἄγγελον (angel), “Κατὰ (By) τί (what) γνώσομαι (will I know) τοῦτο (this)? ἐγὼ (I) γάρ (for) εἰμι (am) πρεσβύτης (an old man), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) γυνή (wife) μου (of me) προβεβηκυῖα (is advanced) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (years) αὐτῆς (of her).”
19Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), ὁ (the) ἄγγελος (angel) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) Γαβριὴλ (Gabriel), ὁ (the one) παρεστηκὼς (standing) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), καὶ (and) ἀπεστάλην (I was sent) λαλῆσαι (to speak) πρὸς (to) σὲ (you), καὶ (and) εὐαγγελίσασθαί (to bring glad tidings) σοι (to you) ταῦτα (these).
20καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), ἔσῃ (you will be) σιωπῶν (silent), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) δυνάμενος (able) λαλῆσαι (to speak) ἄχρι (until) ἧς (that) ἡμέρας (day) γένηται (shall take place) ταῦτα (these things), ἀνθ’ (in return for) ὧν (that) οὐκ (not) ἐπίστευσας (you did believe) τοῖς (the) λόγοις (words) μου (of me), οἵτινες (which) πληρωθήσονται (will be fulfilled) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) καιρὸν (season) αὐτῶν (of them).”
21Καὶ (And) ἦν (were) ὁ (the) λαὸς (people) προσδοκῶν (expecting) τὸν (-) Ζαχαρίαν (Zechariah), καὶ (and) ἐθαύμαζον (they were wondering) ἐν (at) τῷ (the) χρονίζειν (delaying) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ναῷ (temple) αὐτόν (of him).
22ἐξελθὼν (Having come out) δὲ (then), οὐκ (not) ἐδύνατο (he was able) λαλῆσαι (to speak) αὐτοῖς (to them), καὶ (and) ἐπέγνωσαν (they recognized) ὅτι (that) ὀπτασίαν (a vision) ἑώρακεν (he had seen) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ναῷ (temple). καὶ (And) αὐτὸς (he) ἦν (was) διανεύων (making signs) αὐτοῖς (to them), καὶ (and) διέμενεν (remained) κωφός (mute).
23καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass), ὡς (when) ἐπλήσθησαν (were fulfilled) αἱ (the) ἡμέραι (days) τῆς (of the) λειτουργίας (service) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἀπῆλθεν (he departed) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) οἶκον (home) αὐτοῦ (of him).
24Μετὰ (After) δὲ (then) ταύτας (these) τὰς (-) ἡμέρας (days) συνέλαβεν (conceived) Ἐλισάβετ (Elizabeth) ἡ (the) γυνὴ (wife) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) περιέκρυβεν (hid) ἑαυτὴν (herself) μῆνας (months) πέντε (five), λέγουσα (saying),
25ὅτι (-) “Οὕτως (Thus) μοι (to me) πεποίηκεν (has done) Κύριος (the Lord), ἐν (in) ἡμέραις (the days) αἷς (in which) ἐπεῖδεν (He looked upon me), ἀφελεῖν (to take away) ὄνειδός (the disgrace) μου (of me) ἐν (among) ἀνθρώποις (men).”

26Ἐν (In) δὲ (now) τῷ (the) μηνὶ (month) τῷ (-) ἕκτῳ (sixth), ἀπεστάλη (was sent) ὁ (the) ἄγγελος (angel) Γαβριὴλ (Gabriel) ἀπὸ (by) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) εἰς (to) πόλιν (a city) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (of Galilee), ᾗ (whose) ὄνομα (name was) Ναζαρὲθ (Nazareth),
27πρὸς (to) παρθένον (a virgin) ἐμνηστευμένην (betrothed) ἀνδρὶ (to a man), ᾧ (whose) ὄνομα (name was) Ἰωσὴφ (Joseph), ἐξ (of) οἴκου (the house) Δαυὶδ (of David); καὶ (and) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) τῆς (of the) παρθένου (virgin) Μαριάμ (was Mary).
28καὶ (And) εἰσελθὼν (having come) πρὸς (to) αὐτὴν (her), εἶπεν (he said), “Χαῖρε (Greetings), κεχαριτωμένη (you favored with grace)! ὁ (The) Κύριος (Lord is) μετὰ (with) σοῦ (you).”a
29Ἡ (-) δὲ (And) ἐπὶ (at) τῷ (the) λόγῳ (statement) διεταράχθη (she was troubled), καὶ (and) διελογίζετο (was pondering) ποταπὸς (what kind) εἴη (might be) ὁ (the) ἀσπασμὸς (salutation) οὗτος (this).
30καὶ (And) εἶπεν (said) ὁ (the) ἄγγελος (angel) αὐτῇ (to her), “Μὴ (Not) φοβοῦ (fear), Μαριάμ (Mary); εὗρες (you have found) γὰρ (for) χάριν (favor) παρὰ (with) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God);
31καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold), συλλήμψῃ (you will conceive) ἐν (in) γαστρὶ (womb), καὶ (and) τέξῃ (will bring forth) υἱόν (a son), καὶ (and) καλέσεις (you shall call) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus).
32οὗτος (He) ἔσται (will be) μέγας (great), καὶ (and) Υἱὸς (Son) Ὑψίστου (of the Most High) κληθήσεται (He will be called); καὶ (and) δώσει (will give) αὐτῷ (Him) Κύριος (the Lord) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (the) θρόνον (throne) Δαυὶδ (of David), τοῦ (of the) πατρὸς (father) αὐτοῦ (of Him);
33καὶ (and) βασιλεύσει (He will reign) ἐπὶ (over) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) Ἰακὼβ (of Jacob) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages); καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom) αὐτοῦ (of Him) οὐκ (not) ἔσται (there will be) τέλος (an end)!”
34Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) Μαριὰμ (Mary) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) ἄγγελον (angel), “Πῶς (How) ἔσται (will be) τοῦτο (this), ἐπεὶ (since) ἄνδρα (a man) οὐ (not) γινώσκω (I know)?”
35Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), ὁ (the) ἄγγελος (angel) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῇ (to her), “Πνεῦμα (the Spirit) Ἅγιον (Holy) ἐπελεύσεται (will come) ἐπὶ (upon) σέ (you), καὶ (and) δύναμις (power) Ὑψίστου (of the Most High) ἐπισκιάσει (will overshadow) σοι (you); διὸ (therefore) καὶ (also) τὸ (the) γεννώμενον (being born)b ἅγιον (Holy One) κληθήσεται (will be called) Υἱὸς (the Son) Θεοῦ (of God).
36καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), Ἐλισάβετ (Elizabeth), ἡ (the) συγγενίς (relative) σου (of you), καὶ (also) αὐτὴ (she) συνείληφεν (has conceived) υἱὸν (a son) ἐν (in) γήρει (old age) αὐτῆς (her), καὶ (and) οὗτος (this) μὴν (month) ἕκτος (the sixth) ἐστὶν (is) αὐτῇ (to her) τῇ (who) καλουμένῃ (was called) στείρᾳ (barren).
37ὅτι (For) οὐκ (not) ἀδυνατήσει (will be impossible) παρὰ (with) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) πᾶν (every) ῥῆμα (thing).”
38Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) Μαριάμ (Mary), “Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἡ (the) δούλη (handmaid) Κυρίου (of the Lord). γένοιτό (May it happen) μοι (to me) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) ῥῆμά (word) σου (of you).” καὶ (And) ἀπῆλθεν (departed) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτῆς (her) ὁ (the) ἄγγελος (angel).

57Τῇ (To) δὲ (now) Ἐλισάβετ (Elizabeth) ἐπλήσθη (was fulfilled) ὁ (the) χρόνος (time) τοῦ (-) τεκεῖν (to give birth) αὐτήν (for her), καὶ (and) ἐγέννησεν (she bore) υἱόν (a son).

62ἐνένευον (They were making signs) δὲ (then) τῷ (to the) πατρὶ (father) αὐτοῦ (of him), τὸ (the) τί (what) ἂν (-) θέλοι (he might wish) καλεῖσθαι (to be called) αὐτό (him).
63Καὶ (And) αἰτήσας (having asked for) πινακίδιον (a writing tablet), ἔγραψεν (he wrote), λέγων (saying), “Ἰωάννης (John) ἐστὶν (is) ὄνομα (the name) αὐτοῦ (of him).” καὶ (And) ἐθαύμασαν (they marveled) πάντες (all).
64ἀνεῴχθη (Was opened) δὲ (then) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) αὐτοῦ (of him) παραχρῆμα (immediately), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) γλῶσσα (tongue) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ἐλάλει (he was speaking), εὐλογῶν (blessing) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God).
65Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (came) ἐπὶ (upon) πάντας (all) φόβος (fear), τοὺς (those) περιοικοῦντας (dwelling around) αὐτούς (them); καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) ὀρεινῇ (hill country) τῆς (-) Ἰουδαίας (of Judea) διελαλεῖτο (were being talked about) πάντα (all) τὰ (the things), ῥήματα (words) ταῦτα (these).
66καὶ (And) ἔθεντο (laid them up) πάντες (all) οἱ (those) ἀκούσαντες (having heard), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) αὐτῶν (of them), λέγοντες (saying), “Τί (What) ἄρα (then) τὸ (the) παιδίον (child) τοῦτο (this) ἔσται (will be)?” καὶ (And) γὰρ (for) χεὶρ (the hand) Κυρίου (of the Lord) ἦν (was) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him).
