In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.1Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν Λόγος καὶ Λόγος ἦν πρὸς τὸν Θεόν καὶ Θεὸς ἦν Λόγος
He existed in the beginning with God.2Οὗτος ἦν ἐν ἀρχῇ πρὸς τὸν Θεόν
God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him.3πάντα δι’ αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο καὶ χωρὶς αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο οὐδὲ ἕν γέγονεν
The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone.4ἐν αὐτῷ ζωὴ ἦν καὶ ζωὴ ἦν τὸ φῶς τῶν ἀνθρώπων
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.5καὶ τὸ φῶς ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ φαίνει καὶ σκοτία αὐτὸ οὐ κατέλαβεν
God sent a man, John the Baptist,6Ἐγένετο ἄνθρωπος ἀπεσταλμένος παρὰ Θεοῦ ὄνομα αὐτῷ Ἰωάννης
to tell about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony.7οὗτος ἦλθεν εἰς μαρτυρίαν ἵνα μαρτυρήσῃ περὶ τοῦ φωτός ἵνα πάντες πιστεύσωσιν δι’ αὐτοῦ
John himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light.8οὐκ ἦν ἐκεῖνος τὸ φῶς ἀλλ’ ἵνα μαρτυρήσῃ περὶ τοῦ φωτός
The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.9Ἦν τὸ φῶς τὸ ἀληθινὸν φωτίζει πάντα ἄνθρωπον ἐρχόμενον εἰς τὸν κόσμον
He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him.10ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ ἦν καὶ κόσμος δι’ αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο καὶ κόσμος αὐτὸν οὐκ ἔγνω
He came to his own people, and even they rejected him.11εἰς τὰ ἴδια ἦλθεν καὶ οἱ ἴδιοι αὐτὸν οὐ παρέλαβον
But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.12ὅσοι δὲ ἔλαβον αὐτόν ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς ἐξουσίαν τέκνα Θεοῦ γενέσθαι τοῖς πιστεύουσιν εἰς τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ
They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.13οἳ οὐκ ἐξ αἱμάτων οὐδὲ ἐκ θελήματος σαρκὸς οὐδὲ ἐκ θελήματος ἀνδρὸς ἀλλ’ ἐκ Θεοῦ ἐγεννήθησαν
So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.14Καὶ Λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο καὶ ἐσκήνωσεν ἐν ἡμῖν καὶ ἐθεασάμεθα τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦ δόξαν ὡς μονογενοῦς παρὰ Πατρός πλήρης χάριτος καὶ ἀληθείας
John testified about him when he shouted to the crowds, “This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘Someone is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’”15Ἰωάννης μαρτυρεῖ περὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ κέκραγεν λέγων Οὗτος ἦν ὃν εἶπον ὀπίσω μου ἐρχόμενος ἔμπροσθέν μου γέγονεν ὅτι πρῶτός μου ἦν
From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another.16Ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ πληρώματος αὐτοῦ ἡμεῖς πάντες ἐλάβομεν καὶ χάριν ἀντὶ χάριτος
For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ.17ὅτι νόμος διὰ Μωϋσέως ἐδόθη χάρις καὶ ἀλήθεια διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐγένετο
No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us. The Testimony of John the Baptist18Θεὸν οὐδεὶς ἑώρακεν πώποτε μονογενὴς Θεὸς ὢν εἰς τὸν κόλπον τοῦ Πατρὸς ἐκεῖνος ἐξηγήσατο
This was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests and Temple assistants from Jerusalem to ask John, “Who are you?”19Καὶ αὕτη ἐστὶν μαρτυρία τοῦ Ἰωάννου ὅτε ἀπέστειλαν πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἐξ Ἱεροσολύμων ἱερεῖς καὶ Λευίτας ἵνα ἐρωτήσωσιν αὐτόν Σὺ τίς εἶ
He came right out and said, “I am not the Messiah.”20καὶ ὡμολόγησεν καὶ οὐκ ἠρνήσατο καὶ ὡμολόγησεν ὅτι Ἐγὼ οὐκ εἰμὶ Χριστός
“Well then, who are you?” they asked. “Are you Elijah?” “No,” he replied. “Are you the Prophet we are expecting?” “No.”21Καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτόν Τί οὖν σὺ Ἠλίας εἶ Καὶ λέγει Οὐκ εἰμί προφήτης εἶ σύ Καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Οὔ
“Then who are you? We need an answer for those who sent us. What do you have to say about yourself?”22Εἶπαν οὖν αὐτῷ Τίς εἶ ἵνα ἀπόκρισιν δῶμεν τοῖς πέμψασιν ἡμᾶς τί λέγεις περὶ σεαυτοῦ
John replied in the words of the prophet Isaiah: “I am a voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Clear the way for the LORD’s coming!’”23Ἔφη Ἐγὼ φωνὴ βοῶντος ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ Εὐθύνατε τὴν ὁδὸν Κυρίου καθὼς εἶπεν Ἠσαΐας προφήτης
Then the Pharisees who had been sent24Καὶ ἀπεσταλμένοι ἦσαν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων
asked him, “If you aren’t the Messiah or Elijah or the Prophet, what right do you have to baptize?”25καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Τί οὖν βαπτίζεις εἰ σὺ οὐκ εἶ Χριστὸς οὐδὲ Ἠλίας οὐδὲ προφήτης
John told them, “I baptize with water, but right here in the crowd is someone you do not recognize.26Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς Ἰωάννης λέγων Ἐγὼ βαπτίζω ἐν ὕδατι μέσος ὑμῶν ἕστηκεν* ὃν ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε
Though his ministry follows mine, I’m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandal.”27 ὀπίσω μου ἐρχόμενος οὗ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἐγὼ ἄξιος ἵνα λύσω αὐτοῦ τὸν ἱμάντα τοῦ ὑποδήματος
This encounter took place in Bethany, an area east of the Jordan River, where John was baptizing. Jesus, the Lamb of God28Ταῦτα ἐν Βηθανίᾳ ἐγένετο πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου ὅπου ἦν Ἰωάννης βαπτίζων
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!29Τῇ ἐπαύριον βλέπει τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐρχόμενον πρὸς αὐτόν καὶ λέγει Ἴδε Ἀμνὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ αἴρων τὴν ἁμαρτίαν τοῦ κόσμου
He is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘A man is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’30οὗτός ἐστιν ὑπὲρ οὗ ἐγὼ εἶπον Ὀπίσω μου ἔρχεται ἀνὴρ ὃς ἔμπροσθέν μου γέγονεν ὅτι πρῶτός μου ἦν
I did not recognize him as the Messiah, but I have been baptizing with water so that he might be revealed to Israel.”31κἀγὼ οὐκ ᾔδειν αὐτόν ἀλλ’ ἵνα φανερωθῇ τῷ Ἰσραὴλ διὰ τοῦτο ἦλθον ἐγὼ ἐν ὕδατι βαπτίζων
Then John testified, “I saw the Holy Spirit descending like a dove from heaven and resting upon him.32Καὶ ἐμαρτύρησεν Ἰωάννης λέγων ὅτι Τεθέαμαι τὸ Πνεῦμα καταβαῖνον ὡς περιστερὰν ἐξ οὐρανοῦ καὶ ἔμεινεν ἐπ’ αὐτόν
I didn’t know he was the one, but when God sent me to baptize with water, he told me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’33κἀγὼ οὐκ ᾔδειν αὐτόν ἀλλ’ πέμψας με βαπτίζειν ἐν ὕδατι ἐκεῖνός μοι εἶπεν Ἐφ’ ὃν ἂν ἴδῃς τὸ Πνεῦμα καταβαῖνον καὶ μένον ἐπ’ αὐτόν οὗτός ἐστιν βαπτίζων ἐν Πνεύματι Ἁγίῳ
I saw this happen to Jesus, so I testify that he is the Chosen One of God. ” The First Disciples34κἀγὼ ἑώρακα καὶ μεμαρτύρηκα ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ
The following day John was again standing with two of his disciples.35Τῇ ἐπαύριον πάλιν εἱστήκει Ἰωάννης καὶ ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ δύο
As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and declared, “Look! There is the Lamb of God!”36καὶ ἐμβλέψας τῷ Ἰησοῦ περιπατοῦντι λέγει Ἴδε Ἀμνὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ
When John’s two disciples heard this, they followed Jesus.37καὶ ἤκουσαν οἱ δύο μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος καὶ ἠκολούθησαν τῷ Ἰησοῦ
Jesus looked around and saw them following. “What do you want?” he asked them. They replied, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”38Στραφεὶς δὲ Ἰησοῦς καὶ θεασάμενος αὐτοὺς ἀκολουθοῦντας λέγει αὐτοῖς Τί ζητεῖτε Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Ῥαββί λέγεται μεθερμηνευόμενον Διδάσκαλε Ποῦ μένεις
“Come and see,” he said. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon when they went with him to the place where he was staying, and they remained with him the rest of the day.39Λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἔρχεσθε καὶ ὄψεσθε ἦλθαν οὖν καὶ εἶδαν ποῦ μένει καὶ παρ’ αὐτῷ ἔμειναν τὴν ἡμέραν ἐκείνην ὥρα ἦν ὡς δεκάτη
Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of these men who heard what John said and then followed Jesus.40Ἦν Ἀνδρέας ἀδελφὸς Σίμωνος Πέτρου εἷς ἐκ τῶν δύο τῶν ἀκουσάντων παρὰ Ἰωάννου καὶ ἀκολουθησάντων αὐτῷ
Andrew went to find his brother, Simon, and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means “Christ” ).41εὑρίσκει οὗτος πρῶτον τὸν ἀδελφὸν τὸν ἴδιον Σίμωνα καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Εὑρήκαμεν τὸν Μεσσίαν ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον Χριστός
Then Andrew brought Simon to meet Jesus. Looking intently at Simon, Jesus said, “Your name is Simon, son of John—but you will be called Cephas” (which means “Peter” ).42ἤγαγεν αὐτὸν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐμβλέψας αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Σὺ εἶ Σίμων υἱὸς Ἰωάννου σὺ κληθήσῃ Κηφᾶς ἑρμηνεύεται Πέτρος
The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Come, follow me.”43Τῇ ἐπαύριον ἠθέλησεν ἐξελθεῖν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν καὶ εὑρίσκει Φίλιππον καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Ἀκολούθει μοι
Philip was from Bethsaida, Andrew and Peter’s hometown.44ἦν δὲ Φίλιππος ἀπὸ Βηθσαϊδά ἐκ τῆς πόλεως Ἀνδρέου καὶ Πέτρου
Philip went to look for Nathanael and told him, “We have found the very person Moses and the prophets wrote about! His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.”45Εὑρίσκει Φίλιππος τὸν Ναθαναὴλ καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ὃν ἔγραψεν Μωϋσῆς ἐν τῷ νόμῳ καὶ οἱ προφῆται εὑρήκαμεν Ἰησοῦν υἱὸν τοῦ Ἰωσὴφ τὸν ἀπὸ Ναζαρέτ
“Nazareth!” exclaimed Nathanael. “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” “Come and see for yourself,” Philip replied.46Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ Ἐκ Ναζαρὲτ δύναταί τι ἀγαθὸν εἶναι Λέγει αὐτῷ Φίλιππος Ἔρχου καὶ ἴδε
As they approached, Jesus said, “Now here is a genuine son of Israel—a man of complete integrity.”47Εἶδεν ‹ὁ› Ἰησοῦς τὸν Ναθαναὴλ ἐρχόμενον πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ λέγει περὶ αὐτοῦ Ἴδε ἀληθῶς Ἰσραηλίτης ἐν δόλος οὐκ ἔστιν
“How do you know about me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus replied, “I could see you under the fig tree before Philip found you.”48Λέγει αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ Πόθεν με γινώσκεις Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Πρὸ τοῦ σε Φίλιππον φωνῆσαι ὄντα ὑπὸ τὴν συκῆν εἶδόν σε
Then Nathanael exclaimed, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God—the King of Israel!”49Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ Ῥαββί σὺ εἶ Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ σὺ Βασιλεὺς εἶ τοῦ Ἰσραήλ
Jesus asked him, “Do you believe this just because I told you I had seen you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.”50Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ὅτι εἶπόν σοι ὅτι εἶδόν σε ὑποκάτω τῆς συκῆς πιστεύεις μείζω τούτων ὄψῃ
Then he said, “I tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man, the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth. ”51καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὄψεσθε τὸν οὐρανὸν ἀνεῳγότα καὶ τοὺς ἀγγέλους τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀναβαίνοντας καὶ καταβαίνοντας ἐπὶ τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
