1Imitate me, as I do the Messiah.

1Μιμηταί μου γίνεσθε καθὼς κἀγὼ Χριστοῦ

2I praise you for remembering everything I told you and for holding to the traditions that I passed on to you.

2Ἐπαινῶ δὲ ὑμᾶς ὅτι πάντα μου μέμνησθε καὶ καθὼς παρέδωκα ὑμῖν τὰς παραδόσεις κατέχετε

3Now I want you to realize that the Messiah is the head of every man, and man is the head of the woman, and God is the head of the Messiah.

3Θέλω δὲ ὑμᾶς εἰδέναι ὅτι παντὸς ἀνδρὸς ἡ κεφαλὴ ὁ Χριστός ἐστιν κεφαλὴ δὲ γυναικὸς ὁ ἀνήρ κεφαλὴ δὲ τοῦ Χριστοῦ ὁ Θεός

4Every man who prays or prophesies with something on his head dishonors his head,

4Πᾶς ἀνὴρ προσευχόμενος ἢ προφητεύων κατὰ κεφαλῆς ἔχων καταισχύνει τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ

5and every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, which is the same as having her head shaved.

5πᾶσα δὲ γυνὴ προσευχομένη ἢ προφητεύουσα ἀκατακαλύπτῳ τῇ κεφαλῇ καταισχύνει τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτῆς ἓν γάρ ἐστιν καὶ τὸ αὐτὸ τῇ ἐξυρημένῃ

6So if a woman does not cover her head, she should cut off her hair. If it is a disgrace for a woman to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her own head.

6εἰ γὰρ οὐ κατακαλύπτεται γυνή καὶ κειράσθω εἰ δὲ αἰσχρὸν γυναικὶ τὸ κείρασθαι ἢ ξυρᾶσθαι κατακαλυπτέσθω

7A man should not cover his head, because he exists as God's image and glory. But the woman is man's glory.

7Ἀνὴρ μὲν γὰρ οὐκ ὀφείλει κατακαλύπτεσθαι τὴν κεφαλήν εἰκὼν καὶ δόξα Θεοῦ ὑπάρχων ἡ γυνὴ δὲ δόξα ἀνδρός ἐστιν

8For man did not come from woman, but woman from man;

8οὐ γάρ ἐστιν ἀνὴρ ἐκ γυναικός ἀλλὰ γυνὴ ἐξ ἀνδρός

9and man was not created for woman, but woman for man.

9καὶ γὰρ οὐκ ἐκτίσθη ἀνὴρ διὰ τὴν γυναῖκα ἀλλὰ γυνὴ διὰ τὸν ἄνδρα

10This is why a woman should have authority over her own head: because of the angels.

10διὰ τοῦτο ὀφείλει ἡ γυνὴ ἐξουσίαν ἔχειν ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς διὰ τοὺς ἀγγέλους

11In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man of woman.

11Πλὴν οὔτε γυνὴ χωρὶς ἀνδρὸς οὔτε ἀνὴρ χωρὶς γυναικὸς ἐν Κυρίῳ

12For as woman came from man, so man comes through woman. But everything comes from God.

12ὥσπερ γὰρ ἡ γυνὴ ἐκ τοῦ ἀνδρός οὕτως καὶ ὁ ἀνὴρ διὰ τῆς γυναικός τὰ δὲ πάντα ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ

13Decide for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?

13Ἐν ὑμῖν αὐτοῖς κρίνατε πρέπον ἐστὶν γυναῖκα ἀκατακάλυπτον τῷ Θεῷ προσεύχεσθαι

14Nature itself teaches you neither that it is disgraceful for a man to have long hair

14οὐδὲ ἡ φύσις αὐτὴ διδάσκει ὑμᾶς ὅτι ἀνὴρ μὲν ἐὰν κομᾷ ἀτιμία αὐτῷ ἐστιν

15nor that hair is a woman's glory, since hair is given as a substitute for coverings.

15γυνὴ δὲ ἐὰν κομᾷ δόξα αὐτῇ ἐστιν ὅτι ἡ κόμη ἀντὶ περιβολαίου δέδοται αὐτῇ

16But if anyone wants to argue about this, we do not have any custom like this, nor do any of God's churches.

16Εἰ δέ τις δοκεῖ φιλόνεικος εἶναι ἡμεῖς τοιαύτην συνήθειαν οὐκ ἔχομεν οὐδὲ αἱ ἐκκλησίαι τοῦ Θεοῦ

17Now I am not praising you in giving you the following instructions. When you gather, it is not for the better but for the worse.

17Τοῦτο δὲ παραγγέλλων οὐκ ἐπαινῶ ὅτι οὐκ εἰς τὸ κρεῖσσον ἀλλὰ εἰς τὸ ἧσσον συνέρχεσθε

18For in the first place, I hear that when you gather as a church there are divisions among you, and I partly believe it.

18πρῶτον μὲν γὰρ συνερχομένων ὑμῶν ἐν ἐκκλησίᾳ ἀκούω σχίσματα ἐν ὑμῖν ὑπάρχειν καὶ μέρος τι πιστεύω

19Of course, there must be factions among you to show which of you are genuine!

19δεῖ γὰρ καὶ αἱρέσεις ἐν ὑμῖν εἶναι ἵνα καὶ οἱ δόκιμοι φανεροὶ γένωνται ἐν ὑμῖν

20When you gather in the same place, it is not to eat the Lord's Supper.

20Συνερχομένων οὖν ὑμῶν ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ οὐκ ἔστιν κυριακὸν δεῖπνον φαγεῖν

21For as you eat, each of you rushes to eat his own supper, and one person goes hungry while another gets drunk.

21ἕκαστος γὰρ τὸ ἴδιον δεῖπνον προλαμβάνει ἐν τῷ φαγεῖν καὶ ὃς μὲν πεινᾷ ὃς δὲ μεθύει

22You have homes in which to eat and drink, don't you? Or do you despise God's church and humiliate those who have nothing? What should I say to you? Should I praise you? I will not praise you for this!

22μὴ γὰρ οἰκίας οὐκ ἔχετε εἰς τὸ ἐσθίειν καὶ πίνειν ἢ τῆς ἐκκλησίας τοῦ Θεοῦ καταφρονεῖτε καὶ καταισχύνετε τοὺς μὴ ἔχοντας τί εἴπω ὑμῖν ἐπαινέσω ὑμᾶς ἐν τούτῳ οὐκ ἐπαινῶ

23For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you—how the Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took a loaf of bread,

23Ἐγὼ γὰρ παρέλαβον ἀπὸ τοῦ Κυρίου ὃ καὶ παρέδωκα ὑμῖν ὅτι ὁ Κύριος Ἰησοῦς ἐν τῇ νυκτὶ ᾗ παρεδίδετο ἔλαβεν ἄρτον

24gave thanks for it, and broke it in pieces, saying, "This is my body that is for you. Keep doing this in memory of me."

24καὶ εὐχαριστήσας ἔκλασεν καὶ εἶπεν Τοῦτό μού ἐστιν τὸ σῶμα τὸ ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν τοῦτο ποιεῖτε εἰς τὴν ἐμὴν ἀνάμνησιν

25He did the same with the cup after the supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. As often as you drink from it, keep doing this in memory of me."

25ὡσαύτως καὶ τὸ ποτήριον μετὰ τὸ δειπνῆσαι λέγων Τοῦτο τὸ ποτήριον ἡ καινὴ διαθήκη ἐστὶν ἐν τῷ ἐμῷ αἵματι τοῦτο ποιεῖτε ὁσάκις ἐὰν πίνητε εἰς τὴν ἐμὴν ἀνάμνησιν

26For as often as you eat this bread and drink from this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

26ὁσάκις γὰρ ἐὰν ἐσθίητε τὸν ἄρτον τοῦτον καὶ τὸ ποτήριον πίνητε τὸν θάνατον τοῦ Κυρίου καταγγέλλετε ἄχρι οὗ ἔλθῃ

27Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks from the cup in an unworthy manner will be held responsible for the Lord's body and blood.

27Ὥστε ὃς ἂν ἐσθίῃ τὸν ἄρτον ἢ πίνῃ τὸ ποτήριον τοῦ Κυρίου ἀναξίως ἔνοχος ἔσται τοῦ σώματος καὶ τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ Κυρίου

28A person must examine himself and then eat the bread and drink from the cup,

28δοκιμαζέτω δὲ ἄνθρωπος ἑαυτόν καὶ οὕτως ἐκ τοῦ ἄρτου ἐσθιέτω καὶ ἐκ τοῦ ποτηρίου πινέτω

29because whoever eats and drinks without recognizing the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself.

29ὁ γὰρ ἐσθίων καὶ πίνων κρίμα ἑαυτῷ ἐσθίει καὶ πίνει μὴ διακρίνων τὸ σῶμα

30That's why so many of you are weak and sick and a considerable number are dying.

30διὰ τοῦτο ἐν ὑμῖν πολλοὶ ἀσθενεῖς καὶ ἄρρωστοι καὶ κοιμῶνται ἱκανοί

31But if we judged ourselves correctly, we would not be judged.

31Εἰ δὲ ἑαυτοὺς διεκρίνομεν οὐκ ἂν ἐκρινόμεθα

32Now, while we are being judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so we won't be condemned along with the world.

32κρινόμενοι δὲ ὑπὸ τοῦ Κυρίου παιδευόμεθα ἵνα μὴ σὺν τῷ κόσμῳ κατακριθῶμεν

33Therefore, my brothers, when you gather to eat, wait for each other.

33Ὥστε ἀδελφοί μου συνερχόμενοι εἰς τὸ φαγεῖν ἀλλήλους ἐκδέχεσθε

34If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you gather it may not bring judgment on you. And when I come I will give instructions concerning the other matters.

34εἴ τις πεινᾷ ἐν οἴκῳ ἐσθιέτω ἵνα μὴ εἰς κρίμα συνέρχησθε Τὰ δὲ λοιπὰ ὡς ἂν ἔλθω διατάξομαι
