1Now I do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, of the fact that all of our ancestors who left Egypt were under the cloud. They all went through the sea,

1Οὐ θέλω γὰρ ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν ἀδελφοί ὅτι οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν πάντες ὑπὸ τὴν νεφέλην ἦσαν καὶ πάντες διὰ τῆς θαλάσσης διῆλθον

2and they all were immersed into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.

2καὶ πάντες εἰς τὸν Μωϋσῆν ἐβαπτίσαντο ἐν τῇ νεφέλῃ καὶ ἐν τῇ θαλάσσῃ

3They all ate the same spiritual food

3καὶ πάντες τὸ αὐτὸ πνευματικὸν βρῶμα ἔφαγον

4and drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank from the spiritual rock that went with them. That rock was the Messiah.

4καὶ πάντες τὸ αὐτὸ πνευματικὸν ἔπιον πόμα ἔπινον γὰρ ἐκ πνευματικῆς ἀκολουθούσης πέτρας ἡ πέτρα δὲ ἦν ὁ Χριστός

5But God wasn't pleased with most of those people, and so they were struck down in the wilderness.

5ἀλλ’ οὐκ ἐν τοῖς πλείοσιν αὐτῶν εὐδόκησεν ὁ Θεός κατεστρώθησαν γὰρ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ

6Now their experiences serve as examples for us so that we won't set our hearts on evil as they did.

6Ταῦτα δὲ τύποι ἡμῶν ἐγενήθησαν εἰς τὸ μὴ εἶναι ἡμᾶς ἐπιθυμητὰς κακῶν καθὼς κἀκεῖνοι ἐπεθύμησαν

7Let's stop being idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to play."

7μηδὲ εἰδωλολάτραι γίνεσθε καθώς τινες αὐτῶν ὥσπερ γέγραπται Ἐκάθισεν ὁ λαὸς φαγεῖν καὶ πεῖν καὶ ἀνέστησαν παίζειν

8Let's stop sinning sexually, as some of them were doing, and on a single day 23,000 fell dead.

8μηδὲ πορνεύωμεν καθώς τινες αὐτῶν ἐπόρνευσαν καὶ ἔπεσαν μιᾷ ἡμέρᾳ εἰκοσι τρεῖς χιλιάδες

9Let's stop putting the Lord to the test, as some of them were doing, and were destroyed by snakes.

9μηδὲ ἐκπειράζωμεν τὸν Χριστόν* καθώς τινες αὐτῶν ἐπείρασαν καὶ ὑπὸ τῶν ὄφεων ἀπώλλυντο

10You must stop complaining, as some of them were doing, and were annihilated by the destroyer.

10μηδὲ γογγύζετε καθάπερ τινὲς αὐτῶν ἐγόγγυσαν καὶ ἀπώλοντο ὑπὸ τοῦ ὀλοθρευτοῦ

11These things happened to them to serve as an example, and they were written down as a warning for us in whom the culmination of the ages has been attained.

11Ταῦτα δὲ τυπικῶς συνέβαινεν ἐκείνοις ἐγράφη δὲ πρὸς νουθεσίαν ἡμῶν εἰς οὓς τὰ τέλη τῶν αἰώνων κατήντηκεν

12Therefore, whoever thinks he is standing securely should watch out so he doesn't fall.

12Ὥστε ὁ δοκῶν ἑστάναι βλεπέτω μὴ πέσῃ

13No temptation has overtaken you that is unusual for human beings. But God is faithful, and he will not allow you to be tempted beyond your strength. Instead, along with the temptation he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to endure it.

13πειρασμὸς ὑμᾶς οὐκ εἴληφεν εἰ μὴ ἀνθρώπινος πιστὸς δὲ ὁ Θεός ὃς οὐκ ἐάσει ὑμᾶς πειρασθῆναι ὑπὲρ ὃ δύνασθε ἀλλὰ ποιήσει σὺν τῷ πειρασμῷ καὶ τὴν ἔκβασιν τοῦ δύνασθαι ὑπενεγκεῖν

14And so, my dear friends, keep on running away from idolatry.

14Διόπερ ἀγαπητοί μου φεύγετε ἀπὸ τῆς εἰδωλολατρίας

15I am talking to sensible people. Apply what I am saying to yourselves.

15ὡς φρονίμοις λέγω κρίνατε ὑμεῖς ὅ φημι

16The cup of blessing that we bless is our fellowship in the blood of the Messiah, isn't it? The bread that we break is our fellowship in the body of the Messiah, isn't it?

16Τὸ ποτήριον τῆς εὐλογίας ὃ εὐλογοῦμεν οὐχὶ κοινωνία ἐστὶν τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ τὸν ἄρτον ὃν κλῶμεν οὐχὶ κοινωνία τοῦ σώματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐστιν

17Because there is one loaf, we who are many are one body, because all of us eat from the same loaf.

17ὅτι εἷς ἄρτος ἓν σῶμα οἱ πολλοί ἐσμεν οἱ γὰρ πάντες ἐκ τοῦ ἑνὸς ἄρτου μετέχομεν

18Look at the Israelis from a human point of view. Those who eat the sacrifices share in what is on the altar, don't they?

18βλέπετε τὸν Ἰσραὴλ κατὰ σάρκα οὐχ οἱ ἐσθίοντες τὰς θυσίας κοινωνοὶ τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου εἰσίν

19Am I suggesting that an offering made to idols means anything, or that an idol itself means anything?

19Τί οὖν φημι ὅτι εἰδωλόθυτόν τί ἐστιν ἢ ὅτι εἴδωλόν τί ἐστιν

20Hardly! What they offer, they offer to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to become partners with demons.

20ἀλλ’ ὅτι ἃ θύουσιν (τὰ ἔθνη) δαιμονίοις καὶ οὐ Θεῷ θύουσιν οὐ θέλω δὲ ὑμᾶς κοινωνοὺς τῶν δαιμονίων γίνεσθαι

21You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot dine with the Lord and dine with demons,

21οὐ δύνασθε ποτήριον Κυρίου πίνειν καὶ ποτήριον δαιμονίων οὐ δύνασθε τραπέζης Κυρίου μετέχειν καὶ τραπέζης δαιμονίων

22or you'll provoke the Lord to jealousy, won't you? Are we stronger than he is?

22ἢ παραζηλοῦμεν τὸν Κύριον μὴ ἰσχυρότεροι αὐτοῦ ἐσμεν

23Everything is permissible, but not everything is helpful. Everything is permissible, but not everything builds up.

23Πάντα ἔξεστιν ἀλλ’ οὐ πάντα συμφέρει Πάντα ἔξεστιν ἀλλ’ οὐ πάντα οἰκοδομεῖ

24No one should seek his own welfare, but rather his neighbor's.

24μηδεὶς τὸ ἑαυτοῦ ζητείτω ἀλλὰ τὸ τοῦ ἑτέρου

25Eat anything that is sold in the meat market without raising any question about it on the grounds of conscience,

25Πᾶν τὸ ἐν μακέλλῳ πωλούμενον ἐσθίετε μηδὲν ἀνακρίνοντες διὰ τὴν συνείδησιν

26for "the earth and everything in it belong to the Lord."

26Τοῦ Κυρίου γὰρ Ἡ γῆ καὶ τὸ πλήρωμα αὐτῆς

27If an unbeliever invites you to his house and you wish to go, eat whatever is set before you, raising no question on the grounds of conscience.

27Εἴ τις καλεῖ ὑμᾶς τῶν ἀπίστων καὶ θέλετε πορεύεσθαι πᾶν τὸ παρατιθέμενον ὑμῖν ἐσθίετε μηδὲν ἀνακρίνοντες διὰ τὴν συνείδησιν

28However, if someone says to you, "This was offered as a sacrifice," don't eat it, both out of consideration for the one who told you and also for the sake of conscience.

28ἐὰν δέ τις ὑμῖν εἴπῃ Τοῦτο ἱερόθυτόν ἐστιν μὴ ἐσθίετε δι’ ἐκεῖνον τὸν μηνύσαντα καὶ τὴν συνείδησιν ⧼Tοῦ γὰρ κυρίου ἡ γῆ καὶ τὸ πλήρωμα αὐτῆς⧽

29I mean, of course, his conscience, not yours. For why should my freedom be determined by someone else's conscience?

29συνείδησιν δὲ λέγω οὐχὶ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ἀλλὰ τὴν τοῦ ἑτέρου ἵνα‿ τί γὰρ ἡ ἐλευθερία μου κρίνεται ὑπὸ ἄλλης συνειδήσεως

30If I eat with thankfulness, why should I be denounced because of what I am thankful for?

30εἰ ἐγὼ χάριτι μετέχω τί βλασφημοῦμαι ὑπὲρ οὗ ἐγὼ εὐχαριστῶ

31Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.

31Εἴτε οὖν ἐσθίετε εἴτε πίνετε εἴτε τι ποιεῖτε πάντα εἰς δόξαν Θεοῦ ποιεῖτε

32Don't become a stumbling block to Jews or Greeks or to the church of God,

32ἀπρόσκοποι καὶ Ἰουδαίοις γίνεσθε καὶ Ἕλλησιν καὶ τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ τοῦ Θεοῦ

33just as I myself try to please everybody in every way. I don't look out for my own benefit, but rather for the benefit of many people, so that they might be saved.

33καθὼς κἀγὼ πάντα πᾶσιν ἀρέσκω μὴ ζητῶν τὸ ἐμαυτοῦ σύμφορον ἀλλὰ τὸ τῶν πολλῶν ἵνα σωθῶσιν
