In biblical times, the term "brass" was used to refer to what we now understand as bronze, an alloy of copper and tin, as zinc was not commonly used until later periods. The Hebrew word often translated as "brass" is "nechosheth," which can also mean copper or bronze.Biblical References and Symbolism 1. Construction and Craftsmanship: Brass was a significant material in the construction of the Tabernacle and the Temple. It was used for various sacred objects, including the altar of burnt offering, the laver, and other utensils. In Exodus 27:1-3, the altar of burnt offering is described: "You are to construct the altar of acacia wood, five cubits long and five cubits wide—the altar is to be square—and three cubits high. Make a horn at each of the four corners, so that the horns are of one piece with the altar, and overlay it with bronze. Make all its utensils of bronze—its pots to remove the ashes, its shovels, sprinkling bowls, meat forks, and firepans." 2. Symbol of Strength and Judgment: Brass is often associated with strength and judgment. In the vision of Daniel, the statue representing successive empires had legs of iron and feet partly of iron and partly of clay, but its belly and thighs were of bronze (Daniel 2:32). This imagery suggests a kingdom characterized by strength and endurance. 3. The Serpent of Brass: In Numbers 21:8-9, God instructs Moses to make a serpent of brass and set it on a pole so that anyone bitten by a snake could look at it and live. "Then the LORD said to Moses, 'Make a fiery serpent and mount it on a pole. When anyone who is bitten looks at it, he will live.' So Moses made a bronze serpent and mounted it on a pole. If anyone who was bitten looked at the bronze serpent, he lived." This event is later referenced by Jesus in John 3:14-15 as a foreshadowing of His crucifixion, symbolizing salvation and healing through faith. 4. The Bronze Sea: In Solomon's Temple, the "Bronze Sea" was a large basin used by the priests for ceremonial washing. It was made of cast metal and stood on twelve oxen, three facing each cardinal direction (1 Kings 7:23-26). This massive structure symbolized purification and the cleansing power of God. 5. Judgment and Refinement: In Revelation 1:15, the feet of the glorified Christ are described as "like polished bronze, refined in a furnace," symbolizing His purity, strength, and authority to judge. This imagery conveys the idea of divine judgment and the refining process that purifies and strengthens. Cultural and Historical Context In ancient times, the process of smelting and working with metals like brass was a highly skilled craft. The ability to produce and utilize brass was a sign of technological advancement and wealth. The use of brass in the construction of sacred objects and structures underscored its value and significance in worship and religious practices. Conclusion Throughout the Bible, brass serves as a powerful symbol of strength, judgment, and divine authority. Its use in sacred contexts highlights its importance in the religious and cultural life of ancient Israel. The imagery associated with brass in Scripture continues to convey profound spiritual truths about God's nature and His relationship with humanity. Smith's Bible Dictionary BrassThe word nechosheth is improperly translated by "brass." In most places of the Old Testament the correct translation would be copper, although it may sometimes possibly mean bronze a compound of copper and tin. Indeed a simple metal was obviously intended, as we see from (8:9; 33:25; Job 28) Copper was known at a very early period. (Genesis 4:22) ATS Bible Dictionary BrassIs frequently mentioned in the English Bible, Genesis 4:22 De 8:9; but there is little doubt that copper is intended, brass being a mixed metal-two-thirds copper and one-third zinc-for the manufacture of which we are indebted to the Germans. The ancients knew nothing of that particular compound, though well acquainted with bronze, of which arms, mirrors, and ornaments were made. Copper was used for many purposes about the temple, Le 6:28 Numbers 16:39 2 Chronicles 4:16; for filters, Jud 16:21 2 Kings 25:7; for armor, 1 Samuel 17:5,6,38; for musical instruments, 1 Chronicles 15:19; and for money, Matthew 10:9. "Brass" is used to describe drought, insensibility, baseness, and obstinacy in sin, Le 26:19 De 28:23 Isaiah 48:4 Jeremiah 6:28 Ezekiel 22:18. It is also a symbol of strength, Psalm 107:16 Daniel 2:39 Zechariah 6:1. See COPPER. Easton's Bible Dictionary Which is an alloy of copper and zinc, was not known till the thirteenth century. What is designated by this word in Scripture is properly copper (Deuteronomy 8:9). It was used for fetters (Judges 16:21; 2 Kings 25:7), for pieces of armour (1 Samuel 17:5, 6), for musical instruments (1 Chronicles 15:19; 1 Corinthians 13:1), and for money (Matthew 10:9).It is a symbol of insensibility and obstinacy in sin (Isaiah 48:4; Jeremiah 6:28; Ezek. 22:18), and of strength (Psalm 107:16; Micah 4:13). The Macedonian empire is described as a kingdom of brass (Dan. 2:39). The "mountains of brass" Zechariah (6:1) speaks of have been supposed to represent the immutable decrees of God. The serpent of brass was made by Moses at the command of God (Numbers 21:4-9), and elevated on a pole, so that it might be seen by all the people when wounded by the bite of the serpents that were sent to them as a punishment for their murmurings against God and against Moses. It was afterwards carried by the Jews into Canaan, and preserved by them till the time of Hezekiah, who caused it to be at length destroyed because it began to be viewed by the people with superstitious reverence (2 Kings 18:4). (see NEHUSHTAN.) The brazen serpent is alluded to by our Lord in John 3:14, 15. (see SERPENT.) Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary 1. (n.) International Standard Bible Encyclopedia BRASS; BRAZENbras (nechosheth): The use of the word brass has always been more or less indefinite in its application. At the present time the term brass is applied to an alloy of copper and zinc or of copper, zinc and tin. The word translated "brass" in the King James Version would be more correctly rendered bronze, since the alloy used was copper and tin (Exodus 27:4). In some passages however copper is meant (Deuteronomy 8:9), as bronze is an artificial product. This alloy was known in Egypt in at least 1600 B.C. It was probably known in Europe still earlier (2000 B.C.), which helps to answer the question as to the source of the tin. Bronze was probably of European origin and was carried to Egypt. At a later period the Egyptians made the alloy themselves, bringing their copper from Sinai, Cyprus or northern Syria (see COPPER), and their tin from the Balkan regions or from Spain or the British Isles (see TIN). When the Children of Israel came into the promised land, they found the Canaanites already skilled in the making and use of bronze instruments. This period marked the transition from the bronze age to the iron age in Palestine Museums possessing antiquities from Bible lands have among their collections many and varied bronze objects. Among the most common are nails, lamps, hand mirrors, locks, cutting instruments, etc. Within comparatively recent times brass, meaning an alloy of copper and zinc, has been introduced into Syria. The alloy is made by the native workmen (see CRAFTS). Sheet brass is now being extensively imported for the making of bowls, vases, etc. Bronze is practically unknown in the modern native articles Greek 5470. chalkous -- brazen (ie of copper, bronze, brass) ... brazen (ie of copper, bronze, brass).
