In biblical terminology, "fillets" refer to decorative bands or strips, often used in the construction and adornment of sacred spaces, particularly in the tabernacle and temple. The term is primarily found in the Old Testament, where it describes elements of the tabernacle's structure and the priestly garments.

Tabernacle Construction:

The use of fillets is first mentioned in the context of the tabernacle, the portable sanctuary used by the Israelites during their wilderness wanderings. In Exodus 27:10-11 , the instructions for the construction of the tabernacle's courtyard include the use of fillets: "with twenty posts and twenty bronze bases, and with silver hooks and bands on the posts. Likewise, there are to be twenty posts and twenty bronze bases on the north side, with silver hooks and bands on the posts." Here, the fillets (translated as "bands" in the) are part of the structural framework, serving both a functional and decorative purpose by connecting the posts and supporting the curtains.

Temple Adornments:

Fillets also appear in the description of Solomon's Temple, where they are used as ornamental features. In 1 Kings 7:36 , the intricate craftsmanship of the temple's furnishings is highlighted: "He engraved cherubim, lions, and palm trees on the surfaces of the supports and panels, wherever each had space, with wreaths all around." Although the term "fillets" is not explicitly used in this verse, the concept of decorative bands is consistent with the detailed artistry described.

Priestly Garments:

In addition to their architectural applications, fillets are associated with the attire of the high priest. Exodus 28:4 lists the garments to be worn by Aaron, the first high priest: "These are the garments they shall make: a breastpiece, an ephod, a robe, a woven tunic, a turban, and a sash. They shall make these holy garments for your brother Aaron and his sons to serve Me as priests." While the term "fillets" is not directly mentioned, the concept of decorative bands is inherent in the design of these sacred garments, particularly in the sash and turban, which would have included ornamental elements.

Symbolic Significance:

The use of fillets in the tabernacle and temple underscores the importance of beauty and order in worship. These decorative elements reflect the glory and majesty of God, serving as a reminder of His holiness and the reverence due to Him. The intricate design and craftsmanship of the fillets and other adornments in sacred spaces highlight the care and devotion required in the service of the Lord.

In summary, fillets in the Bible are decorative bands used in the construction of the tabernacle and temple, as well as in the design of priestly garments. They serve both functional and aesthetic purposes, enhancing the beauty and sanctity of the spaces and objects dedicated to the worship of God.

Hebrews hashukum, plur., joinings (Exodus 27:17; 38:17, 28), the rods by which the tops of the columns around the tabernacle court were joined together, and from which the curtains were suspended (Exodus 27:10, 11; 36:38).

In Jeremiah 52:21 the rendering of a different word, hut, meaning a "thread," and designating a measuring-line of 12 cubits in length for the circumference of the copper pillars of Solomon's temple.
