In biblical contexts, the term "grating" refers to a lattice or network structure, often made of metal, used in various applications, particularly in the construction of altars and other sacred objects. The concept of grating is primarily found in the Old Testament, where it is associated with the tabernacle and temple furnishings.

Biblical References:

1. The Bronze Altar Grating:
The most notable mention of a grating in the Bible is in the construction of the bronze altar for the tabernacle, as described in the book of Exodus. The altar was to have a grating made of bronze, which was placed under its ledge, halfway up the altar. This grating served both a practical and symbolic purpose, allowing for the proper burning of sacrifices and the collection of ashes.

· Exodus 27:4-5 : "You are to construct for it a grate of bronze mesh, and make a bronze ring at each of the four corners of the mesh. Set the grate beneath the ledge of the altar, so that the mesh comes halfway up the altar."

2. Symbolism and Function:
The grating of the altar was integral to the sacrificial system established by God for the Israelites. It allowed for the efficient burning of offerings, ensuring that the sacrifices were consumed by fire as a pleasing aroma to the Lord. The use of bronze, a durable and heat-resistant material, underscores the altar's function in enduring the intense heat of the sacrificial flames.

3. Craftsmanship and Design:
The detailed instructions for the construction of the grating highlight the importance of skilled craftsmanship in the service of worship. The artisans, endowed with wisdom and skill by God, were tasked with creating objects that not only served a functional purpose but also reflected the divine order and beauty.

4. Theological Implications:
The grating can be seen as a representation of the separation between the holy and the profane. It served as a barrier that allowed only the purified offerings to ascend to God, symbolizing the need for atonement and purification in approaching the divine presence. This reflects the broader biblical theme of holiness and the necessity of mediation between God and humanity.

5. Other Uses and References:
While the primary reference to grating is in the context of the altar, similar structures may have been used in other parts of the tabernacle or temple, though they are not explicitly detailed in the biblical text. The concept of a grating or latticework can also be found in descriptions of architectural elements, such as windows or decorative panels, in ancient Near Eastern construction.

In summary, the grating in biblical usage is a significant element in the design and function of sacred spaces, particularly in the context of sacrificial worship. Its presence in the tabernacle underscores the meticulous care and divine instruction involved in creating a place where God would dwell among His people.

GRATE; GRATING

grat, grat'-ing (mikhbar, resheth; the King James Version Grate): This "grating of network of brass" (Exodus 27:4; Exodus 38:4), called also "the net" (Exodus 27:4 f), and "grating of brass" (Exodus 38:4), was that reticulated casting or wrought work of bronze which, in the tabernacle system, formed an element of the altar of sacrifice. Its position is well defined: "Thou shalt put it under the ledge round the altar beneath, that the net may reach halfway up the altar" (Exodus 27:5; compare Exodus 38:4). The altar being a hollow box-"hollow with planks" (Exodus 27:8)-3 cubits high, overlaid with brass, and presumably filled with stones, there appears to have been a ledge round about it halfway from the base, from which depended vertically this grating of bronze. On the grating were four rings through which the staves were passed by which the altar was borne (Exodus 27:4, 7). If the ledge was for the priests to stand on while handling the sacrifices on the altar, the grating need be thought of only as an ornamental support for the ledge. Others ascribe to it different uses.
