1The word of the LORD came again to me, saying:

2“Son of man, there were two women, The daughters of one mother.

2"Son of man, there were two women, daughters of the same mother,

3They committed harlotry in Egypt, They committed harlotry in their youth; Their breasts were there embraced, Their virgin bosom was there pressed.

3who acted like prostitutes in Egypt, behaving promiscuously in their youth. Their breasts were fondled there, and their virgin nipples caressed.

4Their names: Oholah the elder and Oholibah her sister; They were Mine, And they bore sons and daughters. As for their names, Samaria is Oholah, and Jerusalem is Oholibah.

4The older one was named Oholah, and her sister was Oholibah. They became mine and gave birth to sons and daughters. As for their names, Oholah represents Samaria and Oholibah represents Jerusalem.

5“Oholah played the harlot even though she was Mine; And she lusted for her lovers, the neighboring Assyrians,

5"Oholah acted like a prostitute even though she was mine. She lusted after her lovers, the Assyrians: warriors

6Who were clothed in purple, Captains and rulers, All of them desirable young men, Horsemen riding on horses.

6dressed in blue, governors and prefects, all of them desirable young men, horsemen riding on steeds.

7Thus she committed her harlotry with them, All of them choice men of Assyria; And with all for whom she lusted, With all their idols, she defiled herself.

7She offered her sexual favors to them; all of them were the elite of Assyria. She defiled herself with all those she lusted after and with all their idols.

8She has never given up her harlotry brought from Egypt, For in her youth they had lain with her, Pressed her virgin bosom, And poured out their immorality upon her.

8She didn't give up her promiscuity that began in Egypt, when men slept with her in her youth, caressed her virgin nipples, and poured out their lust on her.

9“Therefore I have delivered her Into the hand of her lovers, Into the hand of the Assyrians, For whom she lusted.

9Therefore, I handed her over to her lovers, the Assyrians she lusted for.

10They uncovered her nakedness, Took away her sons and daughters, And slew her with the sword; She became a byword among women, For they had executed judgment on her.

10They exposed her nakedness, seized her sons and daughters, and killed her with the sword. Since they executed judgment against her, she became notorious among women.

11“Now although her sister Oholibah saw this, she became more corrupt in her lust than she, and in her harlotry more corrupt than her sister’s harlotry.

11"Now her sister Oholibah saw this, but she was even more depraved in her lust than Oholah, and made her promiscuous acts worse than those of her sister.

12“She lusted for the neighboring Assyrians, Captains and rulers, Clothed most gorgeously, Horsemen riding on horses, All of them desirable young men.

12She lusted after the Assyrians: governors and prefects, warriors splendidly dressed, horsemen riding on steeds, all of them desirable young men.

13Then I saw that she was defiled; Both took the same way.

13And I saw that she had defiled herself; both of them had taken the same path.

14But she increased her harlotry; She looked at men portrayed on the wall, Images of Chaldeans portrayed in vermilion,

14But she increased her promiscuity when she saw male figures carved on the wall, images of the Chaldeans, engraved in bright red,

15Girded with belts around their waists, Flowing turbans on their heads, All of them looking like captains, In the manner of the Babylonians of Chaldea, The land of their nativity.

15wearing belts on their waists and flowing turbans on their heads; all of them looked like officers, a depiction of the Babylonians in Chaldea, their native land.

16As soon as her eyes saw them, She lusted for them And sent messengers to them in Chaldea.

16At the sight of them she lusted after them and sent messengers to them in Chaldea.

17“Then the Babylonians came to her, into the bed of love, And they defiled her with their immorality; So she was defiled by them, and alienated herself from them.

17Then the Babylonians came to her, to the bed of love, and defiled her with their lust. But after she was defiled by them, she turned away from them in disgust.

18She revealed her harlotry and uncovered her nakedness. Then I alienated Myself from her, As I had alienated Myself from her sister.

18When she flaunted her promiscuity and exposed her nakedness, I turned away from her in disgust just as I turned away from her sister.

19“Yet she multiplied her harlotry In calling to remembrance the days of her youth, When she had played the harlot in the land of Egypt.

19Yet she multiplied her acts of promiscuity, remembering the days of her youth when she acted like a prostitute in the land of Egypt

20For she lusted for her paramours, Whose flesh is like the flesh of donkeys, And whose issue is like the issue of horses.

20and lusted after their lovers, whose sexual members were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of stallions.

21Thus you called to remembrance the lewdness of your youth, When the Egyptians pressed your bosom Because of your youthful breasts.

21So you revisited the depravity of your youth, when the Egyptians caressed your nipples to enjoy your youthful breasts.

22“Therefore, Oholibah, thus says the Lord GOD: ‘Behold, I will stir up your lovers against you, From whom you have alienated yourself, And I will bring them against you from every side:

22"Therefore, Oholibah, this is what the Lord GOD says: I am going to incite your lovers against you, those you turned away from in disgust. I will bring them against you from every side:

23The Babylonians, All the Chaldeans, Pekod, Shoa, Koa, All the Assyrians with them, All of them desirable young men, Governors and rulers, Captains and men of renown, All of them riding on horses.

23the Babylonians and all the Chaldeans; Pekod, Shoa, and Koa; and all the Assyrians with them--desirable young men, all of them governors and prefects, officers and administrators, all of them riding on steeds.

24And they shall come against you With chariots, wagons, and war-horses, With a horde of people. They shall array against you Buckler, shield, and helmet all around. ‘I will delegate judgment to them, And they shall judge you according to their judgments.

24They will come against you with an assembly of peoples and with weapons, chariots, and wagons. They will set themselves against you on every side with large and small shields and helmets. I will delegate judgment to them, and they will judge you by their own standards.

25I will set My jealousy against you, And they shall deal furiously with you; They shall remove your nose and your ears, And your remnant shall fall by the sword; They shall take your sons and your daughters, And your remnant shall be devoured by fire.

25When I vent my jealous rage on you, they will deal with you in wrath. They will cut off your nose and ears, and the rest of you will fall by the sword. They will seize your sons and daughters, and the rest of you will be consumed by fire.

26They shall also strip you of your clothes And take away your beautiful jewelry.

26They will strip off your clothes and take your beautiful jewelry.

27‘Thus I will make you cease your lewdness and your harlotry Brought from the land of Egypt, So that you will not lift your eyes to them, Nor remember Egypt anymore.’

27So I will put an end to your depravity and sexual immorality, which began in the land of Egypt, and you will not look longingly at them or remember Egypt anymore.

28“For thus says the Lord GOD: ‘Surely I will deliver you into the hand of those you hate, into the hand of those from whom you alienated yourself.

28"For this is what the Lord GOD says: I am going to hand you over to those you hate, to those you turned away from in disgust.

29They will deal hatefully with you, take away all you have worked for, and leave you naked and bare. The nakedness of your harlotry shall be uncovered, both your lewdness and your harlotry.

29They will treat you with hatred, take all you have worked for, and leave you stark naked, so that the shame of your debauchery will be exposed, both your depravity and promiscuity.

30I will do these things to you because you have gone as a harlot after the Gentiles, because you have become defiled by their idols.

30These things will be done to you because you acted like a prostitute with the nations, defiling yourself with their idols.

31You have walked in the way of your sister; therefore I will put her cup in your hand.’

31You have followed the path of your sister, so I will put her cup in your hand."

32“Thus says the Lord GOD: ‘You shall drink of your sister’s cup, The deep and wide one; You shall be laughed to scorn And held in derision; It contains much.

32This is what the Lord GOD says: "You will drink your sister's cup, which is deep and wide. You will be an object of ridicule and scorn, for it holds so much.

33You will be filled with drunkenness and sorrow, The cup of horror and desolation, The cup of your sister Samaria.

33You will be filled with drunkenness and grief, with a cup of devastation and desolation, the cup of your sister Samaria.

34You shall drink and drain it, You shall break its shards, And tear at your own breasts; For I have spoken,’ Says the Lord GOD.

34You will drink it and drain it; then you will gnaw its broken pieces, and tear your breasts. For I have spoken." This is the declaration of the Lord GOD.

35“Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: ‘Because you have forgotten Me and cast Me behind your back, Therefore you shall bear the penalty Of your lewdness and your harlotry.’ ”

35Therefore, this is what the Lord GOD says: "Because you have forgotten me and cast me behind your back, you must bear the consequences of your indecency and promiscuity."

36The LORD also said to me: “Son of man, will you judge Oholah and Oholibah? Then declare to them their abominations.

36Then the LORD said to me: "Son of man, will you pass judgment against Oholah and Oholibah? Then declare their detestable practices to them.

37For they have committed adultery, and blood is on their hands. They have committed adultery with their idols, and even sacrificed their sons whom they bore to Me, passing them through the fire, to devour them.

37For they have committed adultery, and blood is on their hands; they have committed adultery with their idols. And the children they bore to me they have sacrificed in the fire as food for the idols.

38Moreover they have done this to Me: They have defiled My sanctuary on the same day and profaned My Sabbaths.

38They also did this to me: they defiled my sanctuary on that same day and profaned my Sabbaths.

39For after they had slain their children for their idols, on the same day they came into My sanctuary to profane it; and indeed thus they have done in the midst of My house.

39On the same day they slaughtered their children for their idols, they entered my sanctuary to profane it. Yes, that is what they did inside my house.

40“Furthermore you sent for men to come from afar, to whom a messenger was sent; and there they came. And you washed yourself for them, painted your eyes, and adorned yourself with ornaments.

40"In addition, they sent for men who came from far away when a messenger was dispatched to them. And look how they came! You bathed, painted your eyes, and adorned yourself with jewelry for them.

41You sat on a stately couch, with a table prepared before it, on which you had set My incense and My oil.

41You sat on a luxurious couch with a table spread before it, on which you had set my incense and oil.

42The sound of a carefree multitude was with her, and Sabeans were brought from the wilderness with men of the common sort, who put bracelets on their wrists and beautiful crowns on their heads.

42The sound of a carefree crowd was there. Drunkards from the desert were brought in, along with common men. They put bracelets on the women's hands and beautiful tiaras on their heads.

43Then I said concerning her who had grown old in adulteries, ‘Will they commit harlotry with her now, and she with them?’

43Then I said concerning this woman worn out by adultery: Will they now have illicit sex with her, even her?

44Yet they went in to her, as men go in to a woman who plays the harlot; thus they went in to Oholah and Oholibah, the lewd women.

44Yet they had sex with her as one does with a prostitute. This is how they had sex with Oholah and Oholibah, those depraved women.

45But righteous men will judge them after the manner of adulteresses, and after the manner of women who shed blood, because they are adulteresses, and blood is on their hands.

45But righteous men will judge them the way adulteresses and those who shed blood are judged, for they are adulteresses and blood is on their hands.

46“For thus says the Lord GOD: ‘Bring up an assembly against them, give them up to trouble and plunder.

46"This is what the Lord GOD says: Summon an assembly against them and consign them to terror and plunder.

47The assembly shall stone them with stones and execute them with their swords; they shall slay their sons and their daughters, and burn their houses with fire.

47The assembly will stone them and cut them down with their swords. They will kill their sons and daughters and burn their houses.

48Thus I will cause lewdness to cease from the land, that all women may be taught not to practice your lewdness.

48So I will put an end to depravity in the land, and all the women will be admonished not to imitate your depraved behavior.

49They shall repay you for your lewdness, and you shall pay for your idolatrous sins. Then you shall know that I am the Lord GOD.’ ”

49They will punish you for your depravity, and you will bear the consequences for your sins of idolatry. Then you will know that I am the Lord GOD."
