| 1Now a man was sick, Lazarus, from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. | 1Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. |
| 2Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped His feet with her hair, and it was her brother Lazarus who was sick. | 2(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) |
| 3So the sisters sent a message to Him: "Lord, the one You love is sick." | 3Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. |
| 4When Jesus heard it, He said, "This sickness will not end in death but is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it." | 4When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. |
| 5Now Jesus loved Martha, her sister, and Lazarus. | 5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. |
| 6So when He heard that he was sick, He stayed two more days in the place where He was. | 6When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was. |
| 7Then after that, He said to the disciples, "Let's go to Judea again."" | 7Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. |
| 8Rabbi," the disciples told Him, "just now the Jews tried to stone You, and You're going there again?" | 8His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again? |
| 9"Aren't there 12 hours in a day?" Jesus answered. "If anyone walks during the day, he doesn't stumble, because he sees the light of this world. | 9Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. |
| 10If anyone walks during the night, he does stumble, because the light is not in him." | 10But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him. |
| 11He said this, and then He told them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I'm on My way to wake him up." | 11These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. |
| 12Then the disciples said to Him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will get well." | 12Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. |
| 13Jesus, however, was speaking about his death, but they thought He was speaking about natural sleep. | 13Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. |
| 14So Jesus then told them plainly, "Lazarus has died. | 14Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. |
| 15I'm glad for you that I wasn't there so that you may believe. But let's go to him." | 15And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him. |
| 16Then Thomas (called "Twin") said to his fellow disciples, "Let's go so that we may die with Him." | 16Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him. |
| 17When Jesus arrived, He found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. | 17Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already. |
| 18Bethany was near Jerusalem (about two miles away). | 18Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off: |
| 19Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother. | 19And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. |
| 20As soon as Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet Him. But Mary remained seated in the house. | 20Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house. |
| 21Then Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother wouldn't have died. | 21Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. |
| 22Yet even now I know that whatever You ask from God, God will give You." | 22But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. |
| 23"Your brother will rise again," Jesus told her. | 23Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. |
| 24Martha said, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day." | 24Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. |
| 25Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in Me, even if he dies, will live. | 25Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: |
| 26Everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die--ever. Do you believe this?"" | 26And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? |
| 27Yes, Lord," she told Him, "I believe You are the Messiah, the Son of God, who comes into the world." | 27She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. |
| 28Having said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, saying in private, "The Teacher is here and is calling for you." | 28And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee. |
| 29As soon as she heard this, she got up quickly and went to Him. | 29As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him. |
| 30Jesus had not yet come into the village but was still in the place where Martha had met Him. | 30Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him. |
| 31The Jews who were with her in the house consoling her saw that Mary got up quickly and went out. So they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to cry there. | 31The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there. |
| 32When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw Him, she fell at His feet and told Him, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died!" | 32Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. |
| 33When Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who had come with her crying, He was angry in His spirit and deeply moved. | 33When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, |
| 34"Where have you put him?" He asked." Lord," they told Him, "come and see." | 34And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see. |
| 35Jesus wept. | 35Jesus wept. |
| 36So the Jews said, "See how He loved him!" | 36Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! |
| 37But some of them said, "Couldn't He who opened the blind man's eyes also have kept this man from dying?" | 37And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died? |
| 38Then Jesus, angry in Himself again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. | 38Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. |
| 39"Remove the stone," Jesus said. Martha, the dead man's sister, told Him, "Lord, he's already decaying. It's been four days." | 39Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days. |
| 40Jesus said to her, "Didn't I tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?" | 40Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? |
| 41So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised His eyes and said, "Father, I thank You that You heard Me. | 41Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. |
| 42I know that You always hear Me, but because of the crowd standing here I said this, so they may believe You sent Me." | 42And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. |
| 43After He said this, He shouted with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" | 43And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. |
| 44The dead man came out bound hand and foot with linen strips and with his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Loose him and let him go." | 44And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. |
| 45Therefore, many of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what He did believed in Him. | 45Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. |
| 46But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. | 46But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done. |
| 47So the chief priests and the Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and said, "What are we going to do since this man does many signs? | 47Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. |
| 48If we let Him continue in this way, everyone will believe in Him! Then the Romans will come and remove both our place and our nation." | 48If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation. |
| 49One of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all! | 49And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, |
| 50You're not considering that it is to your advantage that one man should die for the people rather than the whole nation perish." | 50Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. |
| 51He did not say this on his own, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation, | 51And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; |
| 52and not for the nation only, but also to unite the scattered children of God. | 52And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad. |
| 53So from that day on they plotted to kill Him. | 53Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death. |
| 54Therefore Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews but departed from there to the countryside near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim. And He stayed there with the disciples. | 54Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples. |
| 55The Jewish Passover was near, and many went up to Jerusalem from the country to purify themselves before the Passover. | 55And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves. |
| 56They were looking for Jesus and asking one another as they stood in the temple complex: "What do you think? He won't come to the festival, will He?" | 56Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast? |
| 57The chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he should report it so they could arrest Him. | 57Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him. |
