Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. | 1A man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bethany with his sisters, Mary and Martha. |
Mary was the woman who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair. Her brother Lazarus was the one who was ill. | 2This is the Mary who later poured the expensive perfume on the Lord’s feet and wiped them with her hair. Her brother, Lazarus, was sick. |
So the sisters sent word to Jesus and told him, "Lord, the one whom you love is ill." | 3So the two sisters sent a message to Jesus telling him, “Lord, your dear friend is very sick.” |
But when Jesus heard it, he said, "This illness isn't meant to end in death. It's for God's glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it." | 4But when Jesus heard about it he said, “Lazarus’s sickness will not end in death. No, it happened for the glory of God so that the Son of God will receive glory from this.” |
Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. | 5So although Jesus loved Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, |
Yet, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed where he was for two more days. | 6he stayed where he was for the next two days. |
After this, he told the disciples, "Let's go back to Judea." | 7Finally, he said to his disciples, “Let’s go back to Judea.” |
The disciples told him, "Rabbi, the Jewish leaders were just now trying to stone you to death, and you are going back there again?" | 8But his disciples objected. “Rabbi,” they said, “only a few days ago the people in Judea were trying to stone you. Are you going there again?” |
Jesus replied, "There are twelve hours in the day, aren't there? If anyone walks during the day he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. | 9Jesus replied, “There are twelve hours of daylight every day. During the day people can walk safely. They can see because they have the light of this world. |
But if anyone walks at night he stumbles, because the light is not in him." | 10 But at night there is danger of stumbling because they have no light.” |
These were the things he said. Then after this, he told them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I'm leaving to wake him up." | 11Then he said, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but now I will go and wake him up.” |
So the disciples told him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will get well." | 12The disciples said, “Lord, if he is sleeping, he will soon get better!” |
Jesus, however, had been speaking about his death, but they thought that he was speaking about resting or sleeping. | 13They thought Jesus meant Lazarus was simply sleeping, but Jesus meant Lazarus had died. |
Then Jesus told them plainly, "Lazarus has died. | 14So he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead. |
For your sake I'm glad that I wasn't there, so that you may believe. But let's go to him." | 15 And for your sakes, I’m glad I wasn’t there, for now you will really believe. Come, let’s go see him.” |
Then Thomas, who was called the Twin, told his fellow disciples, "Let's go, too, so that we may die with him!" | 16Thomas, nicknamed the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go, too—and die with Jesus.” |
When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. | 17When Jesus arrived at Bethany, he was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days. |
Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away, | 18Bethany was only a few miles down the road from Jerusalem, |
and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them about their brother. | 19and many of the people had come to console Martha and Mary in their loss. |
As soon as Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary stayed at home. | 20When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. But Mary stayed in the house. |
Martha told Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. | 21Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. |
But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, he will give it to you." | 22But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.” |
Jesus told her, "Your brother will rise again." | 23Jesus told her, “Your brother will rise again.” |
Martha told him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day." | 24“Yes,” Martha said, “he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day.” |
Jesus told her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The person who believes in me, even though he dies, will live. | 25Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. |
Indeed, everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe that?" | 26 Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?” |
"Yes, Lord," she told him. "I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who was to come into the world." | 27“Yes, Lord,” she told him. “I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God.” |
When she had said this, she went away and called her sister Mary and told her privately, "The Teacher is here and is calling for you!" | 28Then she returned to Mary. She called Mary aside from the mourners and told her, “The Teacher is here and wants to see you.” |
As soon as Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. | 29So Mary immediately went to him. |
Now Jesus had not yet arrived at the village but was still at the place where Martha had met him. | 30Jesus had stayed outside the village, at the place where Martha met him. |
When the Jewish leaders who had been with her, consoling her in the house, saw Mary get up quickly and go out, they followed her, thinking that she had gone to the tomb to cry there. | 31When the people who were at the house consoling Mary saw her leave so hastily, they assumed she was going to Lazarus’s grave to weep. So they followed her there. |
As soon as Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at his feet and told him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn't have died." | 32When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.” |
When Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who had come with her crying, he was greatly troubled in spirit and deeply moved. | 33When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within him, and he was deeply troubled. |
He asked, "Where have you put him?" They told him, "Lord, come and see." | 34 “Where have you put him?” he asked them. They told him, “Lord, come and see.” |
Jesus burst into tears. | 35Then Jesus wept. |
So the Jewish leaders said, "See how much he loved him!" | 36The people who were standing nearby said, “See how much he loved him!” |
But some of them said, "Surely the one who opened the eyes of the blind man could have kept this man from dying, couldn't he?" | 37But some said, “This man healed a blind man. Couldn’t he have kept Lazarus from dying?” |
Groaning deeply again, Jesus came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying in front of it. | 38Jesus was still angry as he arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance. |
Jesus said, "Remove the stone." Martha, the dead man's sister, told him, "Lord, there must be a stench by now, because he's been dead for four days." | 39 “Roll the stone aside,” Jesus told them. But Martha, the dead man’s sister, protested, “Lord, he has been dead for four days. The smell will be terrible.” |
Jesus told her, "I told you that if you believed you would see God's glory, didn't I?" | 40Jesus responded, “Didn’t I tell you that you would see God’s glory if you believe?” |
So they removed the stone. Then Jesus looked upward and said, "Father, I thank you for hearing me. | 41So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, thank you for hearing me. |
I know that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me." | 42 You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will believe you sent me.” |
After saying this, he shouted with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" | 43Then Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!” |
The man who had died came out, his hands and feet tied with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a handkerchief. Jesus told them, "Untie him, and let him go." | 44And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them, “Unwrap him and let him go!” The Plot to Kill Jesus |
Many of the Jews who had come with Mary and who had observed what Jesus did believed in him. | 45Many of the people who were with Mary believed in Jesus when they saw this happen. |
Some of them, however, went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. | 46But some went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. |
So the high priests and the Pharisees assembled the Council and said, "What are we going to do? This man is performing many signs. | 47Then the leading priests and Pharisees called the high council together. “What are we going to do?” they asked each other. “This man certainly performs many miraculous signs. |
If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and destroy both our Temple and our nation." | 48If we allow him to go on like this, soon everyone will believe in him. Then the Roman army will come and destroy both our Temple and our nation.” |
But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, told them, "You don't know anything! | 49Caiaphas, who was high priest at that time, said, “You don’t know what you’re talking about! |
You don't realize that it is better for you to have one man die for the people than to have the whole nation destroyed." | 50You don’t realize that it’s better for you that one man should die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed.” |
Now he did not say this on his own initiative. As high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, | 51He did not say this on his own; as high priest at that time he was led to prophesy that Jesus would die for the entire nation. |
and not only for the nation, but that he would also gather into one the children of God who were scattered abroad. | 52And not only for that nation, but to bring together and unite all the children of God scattered around the world. |
So from that day on they resolved to put him to death. | 53So from that time on, the Jewish leaders began to plot Jesus’ death. |
As a result, Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews. Instead, he went from there to a town called Ephraim in the region near the wilderness. There he remained with his disciples. | 54As a result, Jesus stopped his public ministry among the people and left Jerusalem. He went to a place near the wilderness, to the village of Ephraim, and stayed there with his disciples. |
Now the Jewish Passover was approaching, and before the Passover many people from the countryside went up to Jerusalem to purify themselves. | 55It was now almost time for the Jewish Passover celebration, and many people from all over the country arrived in Jerusalem several days early so they could go through the purification ceremony before Passover began. |
They kept looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the Temple, "What do you think? Surely he won't come to the festival, will he?" | 56They kept looking for Jesus, but as they stood around in the Temple, they said to each other, “What do you think? He won’t come for Passover, will he?” |
Now the high priests and the Pharisees had given orders that whoever knew where he was should tell them so that they could arrest him. | 57Meanwhile, the leading priests and Pharisees had publicly ordered that anyone seeing Jesus must report it immediately so they could arrest him. |
