Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. | 1Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. |
Mary was the woman who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair. Her brother Lazarus was the one who was ill. | 2(This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.) |
So the sisters sent word to Jesus and told him, "Lord, the one whom you love is ill." | 3So the sisters sent word to Jesus, "Lord, the one you love is sick." |
But when Jesus heard it, he said, "This illness isn't meant to end in death. It's for God's glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it." | 4When he heard this, Jesus said, "This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God's glory so that God's Son may be glorified through it." |
Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. | 5Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. |
Yet, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed where he was for two more days. | 6So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days, |
After this, he told the disciples, "Let's go back to Judea." | 7and then he said to his disciples, "Let us go back to Judea." |
The disciples told him, "Rabbi, the Jewish leaders were just now trying to stone you to death, and you are going back there again?" | 8"But Rabbi," they said, "a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you, and yet you are going back?" |
Jesus replied, "There are twelve hours in the day, aren't there? If anyone walks during the day he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. | 9Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world's light. |
But if anyone walks at night he stumbles, because the light is not in him." | 10It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light." |
These were the things he said. Then after this, he told them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I'm leaving to wake him up." | 11After he had said this, he went on to tell them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up." |
So the disciples told him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will get well." | 12His disciples replied, "Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better." |
Jesus, however, had been speaking about his death, but they thought that he was speaking about resting or sleeping. | 13Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep. |
Then Jesus told them plainly, "Lazarus has died. | 14So then he told them plainly, "Lazarus is dead, |
For your sake I'm glad that I wasn't there, so that you may believe. But let's go to him." | 15and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him." |
Then Thomas, who was called the Twin, told his fellow disciples, "Let's go, too, so that we may die with him!" | 16Then Thomas (also known as Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, "Let us also go, that we may die with him." |
When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. | 17On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. |
Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away, | 18Now Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem, |
and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them about their brother. | 19and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother. |
As soon as Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary stayed at home. | 20When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home. |
Martha told Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. | 21"Lord," Martha said to Jesus, "if you had been here, my brother would not have died. |
But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, he will give it to you." | 22But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask." |
Jesus told her, "Your brother will rise again." | 23Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." |
Martha told him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day." | 24Martha answered, "I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day." |
Jesus told her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The person who believes in me, even though he dies, will live. | 25Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; |
Indeed, everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe that?" | 26and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?" |
"Yes, Lord," she told him. "I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who was to come into the world." | 27"Yes, Lord," she replied, "I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world." |
When she had said this, she went away and called her sister Mary and told her privately, "The Teacher is here and is calling for you!" | 28After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. "The Teacher is here," she said, "and is asking for you." |
As soon as Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. | 29When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. |
Now Jesus had not yet arrived at the village but was still at the place where Martha had met him. | 30Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. |
When the Jewish leaders who had been with her, consoling her in the house, saw Mary get up quickly and go out, they followed her, thinking that she had gone to the tomb to cry there. | 31When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there. |
As soon as Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at his feet and told him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn't have died." | 32When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." |
When Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who had come with her crying, he was greatly troubled in spirit and deeply moved. | 33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. |
He asked, "Where have you put him?" They told him, "Lord, come and see." | 34"Where have you laid him?" he asked. "Come and see, Lord," they replied. |
Jesus burst into tears. | 35Jesus wept. |
So the Jewish leaders said, "See how much he loved him!" | 36Then the Jews said, "See how he loved him!" |
But some of them said, "Surely the one who opened the eyes of the blind man could have kept this man from dying, couldn't he?" | 37But some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?" |
Groaning deeply again, Jesus came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying in front of it. | 38Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. |
Jesus said, "Remove the stone." Martha, the dead man's sister, told him, "Lord, there must be a stench by now, because he's been dead for four days." | 39"Take away the stone," he said. "But, Lord," said Martha, the sister of the dead man, "by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days." |
Jesus told her, "I told you that if you believed you would see God's glory, didn't I?" | 40Then Jesus said, "Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?" |
So they removed the stone. Then Jesus looked upward and said, "Father, I thank you for hearing me. | 41So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me. |
I know that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me." | 42I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me." |
After saying this, he shouted with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" | 43When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" |
The man who had died came out, his hands and feet tied with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a handkerchief. Jesus told them, "Untie him, and let him go." | 44The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, "Take off the grave clothes and let him go." |
Many of the Jews who had come with Mary and who had observed what Jesus did believed in him. | 45Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him. |
Some of them, however, went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. | 46But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. |
So the high priests and the Pharisees assembled the Council and said, "What are we going to do? This man is performing many signs. | 47Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin. "What are we accomplishing?" they asked. "Here is this man performing many signs. |
If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and destroy both our Temple and our nation." | 48If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation." |
But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, told them, "You don't know anything! | 49Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, "You know nothing at all! |
You don't realize that it is better for you to have one man die for the people than to have the whole nation destroyed." | 50You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish." |
Now he did not say this on his own initiative. As high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, | 51He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, |
and not only for the nation, but that he would also gather into one the children of God who were scattered abroad. | 52and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one. |
So from that day on they resolved to put him to death. | 53So from that day on they plotted to take his life. |
As a result, Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews. Instead, he went from there to a town called Ephraim in the region near the wilderness. There he remained with his disciples. | 54Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea. Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples. |
Now the Jewish Passover was approaching, and before the Passover many people from the countryside went up to Jerusalem to purify themselves. | 55When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing before the Passover. |
They kept looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the Temple, "What do you think? Surely he won't come to the festival, will he?" | 56They kept looking for Jesus, and as they stood in the temple courts they asked one another, "What do you think? Isn't he coming to the festival at all?" |
Now the high priests and the Pharisees had given orders that whoever knew where he was should tell them so that they could arrest him. | 57But the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who found out where Jesus was should report it so that they might arrest him. |
