Now when morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people conferred together against Jesus to put Him to death; | 1When daybreak came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put Him to death. |
and they bound Him, and led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate the governor. | 2After tying Him up, they led Him away and handed Him over to Pilate, the governor. |
Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, | 3Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was full of remorse and returned the 30 pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders." |
saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood." But they said, "What is that to us? See to that yourself!" | 4I have sinned by betraying innocent blood," he said." What's that to us?" they said. "See to it yourself!" |
And he threw the pieces of silver into the temple sanctuary and departed; and he went away and hanged himself. | 5So he threw the silver into the sanctuary and departed. Then he went and hanged himself. |
The chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, "It is not lawful to put them into the temple treasury, since it is the price of blood." | 6The chief priests took the silver and said, "It's not lawful to put it into the temple treasury, since it is blood money." |
And they conferred together and with the money bought the Potter's Field as a burial place for strangers. | 7So they conferred together and bought the potter's field with it as a burial place for foreigners. |
For this reason that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. | 8Therefore that field has been called "Blood Field" to this day. |
Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: "AND THEY TOOK THE THIRTY PIECES OF SILVER, THE PRICE OF THE ONE WHOSE PRICE HAD BEEN SET by the sons of Israel; | 9Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: They took the 30 pieces of silver, the price of Him whose price was set by the Israelites, |
AND THEY GAVE THEM FOR THE POTTER'S FIELD, AS THE LORD DIRECTED ME." | 10and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me. |
Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned Him, saying, "Are You the King of the Jews?" And Jesus said to him, "It is as you say." | 11Now Jesus stood before the governor. "Are You the King of the Jews?" the governor asked Him. Jesus answered, "You have said it." |
And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He did not answer. | 12And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He didn't answer. |
Then Pilate said to Him, "Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?" | 13Then Pilate said to Him, "Don't You hear how much they are testifying against You?" |
And He did not answer him with regard to even a single charge, so the governor was quite amazed. | 14But He didn't answer him on even one charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed. |
Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the people any one prisoner whom they wanted. | 15At the festival the governor's custom was to release to the crowd a prisoner they wanted. |
At that time they were holding a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas. | 16At that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. |
So when the people gathered together, Pilate said to them, "Whom do you want me to release for you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?" | 17So when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, "Who is it you want me to release for you--Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Messiah?" |
For he knew that because of envy they had handed Him over. | 18For he knew they had handed Him over because of envy. |
While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, "Have nothing to do with that righteous Man; for last night I suffered greatly in a dream because of Him." | 19While he was sitting on the judge's bench, his wife sent word to him, "Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for today I've suffered terribly in a dream because of Him!" |
But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to put Jesus to death. | 20The chief priests and the elders, however, persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to execute Jesus. |
But the governor said to them, "Which of the two do you want me to release for you?" And they said, "Barabbas." | 21The governor asked them, "Which of the two do you want me to release for you?"" Barabbas!" they answered. |
Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?" They all said, "Crucify Him!" | 22Pilate asked them, "What should I do then with Jesus, who is called Messiah?" They all answered, "Crucify Him!" |
And he said, "Why, what evil has He done?" But they kept shouting all the more, saying, "Crucify Him!" | 23Then he said, "Why? What has He done wrong?" But they kept shouting, "Crucify Him!" all the more. |
When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that a riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of this Man's blood; see to that yourselves." | 24When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that a riot was starting instead, he took some water, washed his hands in front of the crowd, and said, "I am innocent of this man's blood. See to it yourselves!" |
And all the people said, "His blood shall be on us and on our children!" | 25All the people answered, "His blood be on us and on our children!" |
Then he released Barabbas for them; but after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified. | 26Then he released Barabbas to them. But after having Jesus flogged, he handed Him over to be crucified. |
Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman cohort around Him. | 27Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into headquarters and gathered the whole company around Him. |
They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. | 28They stripped Him and dressed Him in a scarlet military robe. |
And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" | 29They twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on His head, and placed a reed in His right hand. And they knelt down before Him and mocked Him: "Hail, King of the Jews!" |
They spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head. | 30Then they spit on Him, took the reed, and kept hitting Him on the head. |
After they had mocked Him, they took the scarlet robe off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him. | 31When they had mocked Him, they stripped Him of the robe, put His clothes on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him. |
As they were coming out, they found a man of Cyrene named Simon, whom they pressed into service to bear His cross. | 32As they were going out, they found a Cyrenian man named Simon. They forced this man to carry His cross. |
And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull, | 33When they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Skull Place), |
they gave Him wine to drink mixed with gall; and after tasting it, He was unwilling to drink. | 34they gave Him wine mixed with gall to drink. But when He tasted it, He would not drink it. |
And when they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments among themselves by casting lots. | 35After crucifying Him they divided His clothes by casting lots. |
And sitting down, they began to keep watch over Him there. | 36Then they sat down and were guarding Him there. |
And above His head they put up the charge against Him which read, "THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS." | 37Above His head they put up the charge against Him in writing: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. |
At that time two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left. | 38Then two criminals were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left. |
And those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads | 39Those who passed by were yelling insults at Him, shaking their heads |
and saying, "You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross." | 40and saying, "The One who would demolish the sanctuary and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross!" |
In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying, | 41In the same way the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked Him and said, " |
"He saved others; He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. | 42He saved others, but He cannot save Himself! He is the King of Israel! Let Him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in Him. |
"HE TRUSTS IN GOD; LET GOD RESCUE Him now, IF HE DELIGHTS IN HIM; for He said, 'I am the Son of God.'" | 43He has put His trust in God; let God rescue Him now--if He wants Him! For He said, 'I am God's Son.'" |
The robbers who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him with the same words. | 44In the same way even the criminals who were crucified with Him kept taunting Him. |
Now from the sixth hour darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth hour. | 45From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over the whole land. |
About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?" that is, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?" | 46About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" that is, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" |
And some of those who were standing there, when they heard it, began saying, "This man is calling for Elijah." | 47When some of those standing there heard this, they said, "He's calling for Elijah!" |
Immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink. | 48Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, fixed it on a reed, and offered Him a drink. |
But the rest of them said, "Let us see whether Elijah will come to save Him." | 49But the rest said, "Let's see if Elijah comes to save Him!" |
And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. | 50Jesus shouted again with a loud voice and gave up His spirit. |
And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split. | 51Suddenly, the curtain of the sanctuary was split in two from top to bottom; the earth quaked and the rocks were split. |
The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; | 52The tombs were also opened and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. |
and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many. | 53And they came out of the tombs after His resurrection, entered the holy city, and appeared to many. |
Now the centurion, and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were happening, became very frightened and said, "Truly this was the Son of God!" | 54When the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they were terrified and said, "This man really was God's Son!" |
Many women were there looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee while ministering to Him. | 55Many women who had followed Jesus from Galilee and ministered to Him were there, looking on from a distance. |
Among them was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee. | 56Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee's sons. |
When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. | 57When it was evening, a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph came, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. |
This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. | 58He approached Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. Then Pilate ordered that it be released. |
And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, | 59So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in clean, fine linen, |
and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away. | 60and placed it in his new tomb, which he had cut into the rock. He left after rolling a great stone against the entrance of the tomb. |
And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the grave. | 61Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were seated there, facing the tomb. |
Now on the next day, the day after the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together with Pilate, | 62The next day, which followed the preparation day, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate |
and said, "Sir, we remember that when He was still alive that deceiver said, 'After three days I am to rise again.' | 63and said, "Sir, we remember that while this deceiver was still alive He said, After three days I will rise again.' |
"Therefore, give orders for the grave to be made secure until the third day, otherwise His disciples may come and steal Him away and say to the people, 'He has risen from the dead,' and the last deception will be worse than the first." | 64Therefore give orders that the tomb be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, His disciples may come, steal Him, and tell the people, 'He has been raised from the dead.' Then the last deception will be worse than the first."" |
Pilate said to them, "You have a guard; go, make it as secure as you know how." | 65You have a guard of soldiers," Pilate told them. "Go and make it as secure as you know how." |
And they went and made the grave secure, and along with the guard they set a seal on the stone. | 66Then they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting the guard. |
