| 1Now on the first day of the week, at early dawn, the women went to the tomb, taking the aromatic spices they had prepared. | 1But very early on Sunday morning the women went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. |

| 13Now that very day two of them were on their way to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. | 13That same day two of Jesus’ followers were walking to the village of Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem. |
| 14They were talking to each other about all the things that had happened. | 14As they walked along they were talking about everything that had happened. |
| 15While they were talking and debating these things, Jesus himself approached and began to accompany them | 15As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself suddenly came and began walking with them. |

| 17Then he said to them, "What are these matters you are discussing so intently as you walk along?" And they stood still, looking sad. | 17He asked them, “What are you discussing so intently as you walk along?” They stopped short, sadness written across their faces. |
| 18Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who doesn't know the things that have happened there in these days?" | 18Then one of them, Cleopas, replied, “You must be the only person in Jerusalem who hasn’t heard about all the things that have happened there the last few days.” |
| 19He said to them, "What things?" "The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene," they replied, "a man who, with his powerful deeds and words, proved to be a prophet before God and all the people; | 19 “What things?” Jesus asked. “The things that happened to Jesus, the man from Nazareth,” they said. “He was a prophet who did powerful miracles, and he was a mighty teacher in the eyes of God and all the people. |
| 20and how our chief priests and rulers handed him over to be condemned to death, and crucified him. | 20But our leading priests and other religious leaders handed him over to be condemned to death, and they crucified him. |
| 21But we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. Not only this, but it is now the third day since these things happened. | 21We had hoped he was the Messiah who had come to rescue Israel. This all happened three days ago. |
| 22Furthermore, some women of our group amazed us. They were at the tomb early this morning, | 22“Then some women from our group of his followers were at his tomb early this morning, and they came back with an amazing report. |
| 23and when they did not find his body, they came back and said they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. | 23They said his body was missing, and they had seen angels who told them Jesus is alive! |
| 24Then some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see him." | 24Some of our men ran out to see, and sure enough, his body was gone, just as the women had said.” |
| 25So he said to them, "You foolish people--how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! | 25Then Jesus said to them, “You foolish people! You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures. |
| 26Wasn't it necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and enter into his glory?" | 26 Wasn’t it clearly predicted that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before entering his glory?” |
| 27Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things written about himself in all the scriptures. | 27Then Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. |
| 28So they approached the village where they were going. He acted as though he wanted to go farther, | 28By this time they were nearing Emmaus and the end of their journey. Jesus acted as if he were going on, |
| 29but they urged him, "Stay with us, because it is getting toward evening and the day is almost done." So he went in to stay with them. | 29but they begged him, “Stay the night with us, since it is getting late.” So he went home with them. |
| 30When he had taken his place at the table with them, he took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. | 30As they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them. |
| 31At this point their eyes were opened and they recognized him. Then he vanished out of their sight. | 31Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And at that moment he disappeared! |
| 32They said to each other, "Didn't our hearts burn within us while he was speaking with us on the road, while he was explaining the scriptures to us?" | 32They said to each other, “Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?” |
| 33So they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem. They found the eleven and those with them gathered together | 33And within the hour they were on their way back to Jerusalem. There they found the eleven disciples and the others who had gathered with them, |
| 34and saying, "The Lord has really risen, and has appeared to Simon!" | 34who said, “The Lord has really risen! He appeared to Peter. ” Jesus Appears to the Disciples |
| 35Then they told what had happened on the road, and how they recognized him when he broke the bread. | 35Then the two from Emmaus told their story of how Jesus had appeared to them as they were walking along the road, and how they had recognized him as he was breaking the bread. |
| 36While they were saying these things, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." | 36And just as they were telling about it, Jesus himself was suddenly standing there among them. “Peace be with you,” he said. |
| 37But they were startled and terrified, thinking they saw a ghost. | 37But the whole group was startled and frightened, thinking they were seeing a ghost! |
| 38Then he said to them, "Why are you frightened, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? | 38 “Why are you frightened?” he asked. “Why are your hearts filled with doubt? |
| 39Look at my hands and my feet; it's me! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones like you see I have." | 39 Look at my hands. Look at my feet. You can see that it’s really me. Touch me and make sure that I am not a ghost, because ghosts don’t have bodies, as you see that I do.” |
| 40When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. | 40As he spoke, he showed them his hands and his feet. |
| 41And while they still could not believe it (because of their joy) and were amazed, he said to them, "Do you have anything here to eat?" | 41Still they stood there in disbelief, filled with joy and wonder. Then he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” |

| 45Then he opened their minds so they could understand the scriptures, | 45Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. |
| 46and said to them, "Thus it stands written that the Christ would suffer and would rise from the dead on the third day, | 46And he said, “Yes, it was written long ago that the Messiah would suffer and die and rise from the dead on the third day. |
| 47and repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. | 47 It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’ |
| 48You are witnesses of these things. | 48 You are witnesses of all these things. |
| 49And look, I am sending you what my Father promised. But stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high." | 49 “And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.” The Ascension |
| 50Then Jesus led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands, he blessed them. | 50Then Jesus led them to Bethany, and lifting his hands to heaven, he blessed them. |
| 51Now during the blessing he departed and was taken up into heaven. | 51While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up to heaven. |
