As He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth.1Καὶ παράγων εἶδεν ἄνθρωπον τυφλὸν ἐκ γενετῆς
And His disciples asked Him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?"2καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ λέγοντες Ῥαββί τίς ἥμαρτεν οὗτος οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ ἵνα τυφλὸς γεννηθῇ
Jesus answered, "It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him.3Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς Οὔτε οὗτος ἥμαρτεν οὔτε οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ ἀλλ’ ἵνα φανερωθῇ τὰ ἔργα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ
"We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work.4ἡμᾶς δεῖ ἐργάζεσθαι τὰ ἔργα τοῦ πέμψαντός με ἕως ἡμέρα ἐστίν ἔρχεται νὺξ ὅτε οὐδεὶς δύναται ἐργάζεσθαι
"While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world."5ὅταν ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ φῶς εἰμι τοῦ κόσμου
When He had said this, He spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and applied the clay to his eyes,6Ταῦτα εἰπὼν ἔπτυσεν χαμαὶ καὶ ἐποίησεν πηλὸν ἐκ τοῦ πτύσματος καὶ ἐπέχρισεν* αὐτοῦ τὸν πηλὸν ἐπὶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς
and said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam " (which is translated, Sent). So he went away and washed, and came back seeing.7καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ὕπαγε νίψαι εἰς τὴν κολυμβήθραν τοῦ Σιλωάμ ἑρμηνεύεται Ἀπεσταλμένος ἀπῆλθεν οὖν καὶ ἐνίψατο καὶ ἦλθεν βλέπων
Therefore the neighbors, and those who previously saw him as a beggar, were saying, "Is not this the one who used to sit and beg?"8Οἱ οὖν γείτονες καὶ οἱ θεωροῦντες αὐτὸν τὸ πρότερον ὅτι προσαίτης ἦν ἔλεγον Οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν καθήμενος καὶ προσαιτῶν
Others were saying, "This is he," still others were saying, "No, but he is like him." He kept saying, "I am the one."9Ἄλλοι ἔλεγον ὅτι Οὗτός ἐστιν ἄλλοι ἔλεγον Οὐχί ἀλλὰ ὅμοιος αὐτῷ ἐστιν Ἐκεῖνος ἔλεγεν ὅτι Ἐγώ εἰμι
So they were saying to him, "How then were your eyes opened?"10Ἔλεγον οὖν αὐτῷ Πῶς οὖν ἠνεῴχθησάν σου οἱ ὀφθαλμοί
He answered, "The man who is called Jesus made clay, and anointed my eyes, and said to me, 'Go to Siloam and wash'; so I went away and washed, and I received sight."11Ἀπεκρίθη ἐκεῖνος ἄνθρωπος λεγόμενος Ἰησοῦς πηλὸν ἐποίησεν καὶ ἐπέχρισέν μου τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς καὶ εἶπέν μοι ὅτι Ὕπαγε εἰς τὸν Σιλωὰμ καὶ νίψαι ἀπελθὼν οὖν καὶ νιψάμενος ἀνέβλεψα
They said to him, "Where is He?" He said, "I do not know."12Καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Ποῦ ἐστιν ἐκεῖνος Λέγει Οὐκ οἶδα
They brought to the Pharisees the man who was formerly blind.13Ἄγουσιν αὐτὸν πρὸς τοὺς Φαρισαίους τόν ποτε τυφλόν
Now it was a Sabbath on the day when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes.14ἦν δὲ σάββατον ἐν ἡμέρᾳ τὸν πηλὸν ἐποίησεν Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἀνέῳξεν αὐτοῦ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς
Then the Pharisees also were asking him again how he received his sight. And he said to them, "He applied clay to my eyes, and I washed, and I see."15πάλιν οὖν ἠρώτων αὐτὸν καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι πῶς ἀνέβλεψεν δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Πηλὸν ἐπέθηκέν μου ἐπὶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς καὶ ἐνιψάμην καὶ βλέπω
Therefore some of the Pharisees were saying, "This man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath." But others were saying, "How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?" And there was a division among them.16Ἔλεγον οὖν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων τινές Οὐκ ἔστιν οὗτος παρὰ Θεοῦ ἄνθρωπος ὅτι τὸ σάββατον οὐ τηρεῖ Ἄλλοι [δὲ] ἔλεγον Πῶς δύναται ἄνθρωπος ἁμαρτωλὸς τοιαῦτα σημεῖα ποιεῖν Καὶ σχίσμα ἦν ἐν αὐτοῖς
So they said to the blind man again, "What do you say about Him, since He opened your eyes?" And he said, "He is a prophet."17λέγουσιν οὖν τῷ τυφλῷ πάλιν Τί σὺ λέγεις περὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἠνέῳξέν σου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς δὲ εἶπεν ὅτι Προφήτης ἐστίν
The Jews then did not believe it of him, that he had been blind and had received sight, until they called the parents of the very one who had received his sight,18Οὐκ ἐπίστευσαν οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι περὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἦν τυφλὸς καὶ ἀνέβλεψεν ἕως ὅτου ἐφώνησαν τοὺς γονεῖς αὐτοῦ τοῦ ἀναβλέψαντος
and questioned them, saying, "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? Then how does he now see?"19καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτοὺς λέγοντες Οὗτός ἐστιν υἱὸς ὑμῶν ὃν ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι τυφλὸς ἐγεννήθη πῶς οὖν βλέπει ἄρτι
His parents answered them and said, "We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind;20Ἀπεκρίθησαν οὖν οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπαν Οἴδαμεν ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν υἱὸς ἡμῶν καὶ ὅτι τυφλὸς ἐγεννήθη
but how he now sees, we do not know; or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him; he is of age, he will speak for himself."21πῶς δὲ νῦν βλέπει οὐκ οἴδαμεν τίς ἤνοιξεν αὐτοῦ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ἡμεῖς οὐκ οἴδαμεν αὐτὸν ἐρωτήσατε ἡλικίαν ἔχει αὐτὸς περὶ ἑαυτοῦ λαλήσει
His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone confessed Him to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.22Ταῦτα εἶπαν οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἐφοβοῦντο τοὺς Ἰουδαίους ἤδη γὰρ συνετέθειντο οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἵνα ἐάν τις αὐτὸν ὁμολογήσῃ Χριστόν ἀποσυνάγωγος γένηται
For this reason his parents said, "He is of age; ask him."23διὰ τοῦτο οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ εἶπαν ὅτι Ἡλικίαν ἔχει αὐτὸν ἐπερωτήσατε
So a second time they called the man who had been blind, and said to him, "Give glory to God; we know that this man is a sinner."24Ἐφώνησαν οὖν τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἐκ δευτέρου ὃς ἦν τυφλὸς καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Δὸς δόξαν τῷ Θεῷ ἡμεῖς οἴδαμεν ὅτι οὗτος ἄνθρωπος ἁμαρτωλός ἐστιν
He then answered, "Whether He is a sinner, I do not know; one thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see."25Ἀπεκρίθη οὖν ἐκεῖνος Εἰ ἁμαρτωλός ἐστιν οὐκ οἶδα ἓν οἶδα ὅτι τυφλὸς ὢν ἄρτι βλέπω
So they said to him, "What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?"26Εἶπον* οὖν αὐτῷ Τί ἐποίησέν σοι πῶς ἤνοιξέν σου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς
He answered them, "I told you already and you did not listen; why do you want to hear it again? You do not want to become His disciples too, do you?"27Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς Εἶπον ὑμῖν ἤδη καὶ οὐκ ἠκούσατε τί πάλιν θέλετε ἀκούειν μὴ καὶ ὑμεῖς θέλετε αὐτοῦ μαθηταὶ γενέσθαι
They reviled him and said, "You are His disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.28Καὶ ἐλοιδόρησαν αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπον* Σὺ μαθητὴς εἶ ἐκείνου ἡμεῖς δὲ τοῦ Μωϋσέως ἐσμὲν μαθηταί
"We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where He is from."29ἡμεῖς οἴδαμεν ὅτι Μωϋσεῖ λελάληκεν Θεός τοῦτον δὲ οὐκ οἴδαμεν πόθεν ἐστίν
The man answered and said to them, "Well, here is an amazing thing, that you do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes.30Ἀπεκρίθη ἄνθρωπος καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἐν τούτῳ γὰρ τὸ θαυμαστόν ἐστιν ὅτι ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε πόθεν ἐστίν καὶ ἤνοιξέν μου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς
"We know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is God-fearing and does His will, He hears him.31οἴδαμεν ὅτι «ὁ Θεὸς» ἁμαρτωλῶν οὐκ ἀκούει ἀλλ’ ἐάν τις θεοσεβὴς καὶ τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ ποιῇ τούτου ἀκούει
"Since the beginning of time it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind.32ἐκ τοῦ αἰῶνος οὐκ ἠκούσθη ὅτι ἠνέῳξέν τις ὀφθαλμοὺς τυφλοῦ γεγεννημένου
"If this man were not from God, He could do nothing."33εἰ μὴ ἦν οὗτος παρὰ Θεοῦ οὐκ ἠδύνατο ποιεῖν οὐδέν
They answered him, "You were born entirely in sins, and are you teaching us?" So they put him out.34Ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Ἐν ἁμαρτίαις σὺ ἐγεννήθης ὅλος καὶ σὺ διδάσκεις ἡμᾶς καὶ ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω
Jesus heard that they had put him out, and finding him, He said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"35Ἤκουσεν Ἰησοῦς ὅτι ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω καὶ εὑρὼν αὐτὸν εἶπεν Σὺ πιστεύεις εἰς τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
He answered, "Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?"36Ἀπεκρίθη ἐκεῖνος καὶ εἶπεν Καὶ τίς ἐστιν Κύριε ἵνα πιστεύσω εἰς αὐτόν
Jesus said to him, "You have both seen Him, and He is the one who is talking with you."37Εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Καὶ ἑώρακας αὐτὸν καὶ λαλῶν μετὰ σοῦ ἐκεῖνός ἐστιν
And he said, "Lord, I believe." And he worshiped Him.38 δὲ ἔφη Πιστεύω Κύριε καὶ προσεκύνησεν αὐτῷ
And Jesus said, "For judgment I came into this world, so that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may become blind."39Καὶ εἶπεν Ἰησοῦς Εἰς κρίμα ἐγὼ εἰς τὸν κόσμον τοῦτον ἦλθον ἵνα οἱ μὴ βλέποντες βλέπωσιν καὶ οἱ βλέποντες τυφλοὶ γένωνται
Those of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these things and said to Him, "We are not blind too, are we?"40ἤκουσαν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων ταῦτα οἱ μετ’ αὐτοῦ ὄντες καὶ εἶπον* αὐτῷ Μὴ καὶ ἡμεῖς τυφλοί ἐσμεν
Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no sin; but since you say, 'We see,' your sin remains.41Εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Εἰ τυφλοὶ ἦτε οὐκ ἂν εἴχετε ἁμαρτίαν νῦν δὲ λέγετε ὅτι Βλέπομεν ἁμαρτία ὑμῶν μένει
