King James Bible | New International Version |
Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. | 1On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. |
And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. | 2They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, |
And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. | 3but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. |
And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: | 4While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. |
And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? | 5In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead? |
He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, | 6He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: |
Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. | 7The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.' " |
And they remembered his words, | 8Then they remembered his words. |
And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest. | 9When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. |
It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles. | 10It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. |
And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not. | 11But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. |
Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass. | 12Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened. |
And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. | 13Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. |
And they talked together of all these things which had happened. | 14They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. |
And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. | 15As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; |
But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. | 16but they were kept from recognizing him. |
And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad? | 17He asked them, "What are you discussing together as you walk along?" They stood still, their faces downcast. |
And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? | 18One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, "Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?" |
And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: | 19"What things?" he asked. "About Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. "He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. |
And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. | 20The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; |
But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done. | 21but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. |
Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre; | 22In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning |
And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive. | 23but didn't find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. |
And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not. | 24Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus." |
Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: | 25He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! |
Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? | 26Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?" |
And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. | 27And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. |
And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. | 28As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. |
But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. | 29But they urged him strongly, "Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over." So he went in to stay with them. |
And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. | 30When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. |
And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. | 31Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. |
And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? | 32They asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?" |
And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, | 33They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together |
Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon. | 34and saying, "It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon." |
And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread. | 35Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread. |
And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. | 36While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." |
But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. | 37They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. |
And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? | 38He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? |
Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. | 39Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have." |
And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet. | 40When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. |
And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat? | 41And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?" |
And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb. | 42They gave him a piece of broiled fish, |
And he took it, and did eat before them. | 43and he took it and ate it in their presence. |
And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. | 44He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms." |
Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, | 45Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. |
And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: | 46He told them, "This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, |
And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. | 47and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. |
And ye are witnesses of these things. | 48You are witnesses of these things. |
And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. | 49I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high." |
And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. | 50When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. |
And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. | 51While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. |
And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy: | 52Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. |
And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen. | 53And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God. |
