| 1And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate. | 1Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate. |
| 2And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King. | 2And they began to accuse him, saying, "We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Messiah, a king." |
| 3And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it. | 3So Pilate asked Jesus, "Are you the king of the Jews?" "You have said so," Jesus replied. |
| 4Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man. | 4Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, "I find no basis for a charge against this man." |
| 5And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place. | 5But they insisted, "He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee and has come all the way here." |
| 6When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean. | 6On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean. |
| 7And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time. | 7When he learned that Jesus was under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time. |
| 8And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him. | 8When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him. From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform a sign of some sort. |
| 9Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing. | 9He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer. |
| 10And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him. | 10The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him. |
| 11And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate. | 11Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe, they sent him back to Pilate. |
| 12And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves. | 12That day Herod and Pilate became friends--before this they had been enemies. |
| 13And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, | 13Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, |
| 14Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him: | 14and said to them, "You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him. |
| 15No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him. | 15Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death. |
| 16I will therefore chastise him, and release him. | 16Therefore, I will punish him and then release him." |
| 17(For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.) | 17 |
| 18And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas: | 18But the whole crowd shouted, "Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!" |
| 19(Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.) | 19(Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.) |
| 20Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them. | 20Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again. |
| 21But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. | 21But they kept shouting, "Crucify him! Crucify him!" |
| 22And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go. | 22For the third time he spoke to them: "Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and then release him." |
| 23And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed. | 23But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed. |
| 24And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required. | 24So Pilate decided to grant their demand. |
| 25And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will. | 25He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will. |
| 26And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus. | 26As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. |
| 27And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him. | 27A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. |
| 28But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children. | 28Jesus turned and said to them, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children. |
| 29For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck. | 29For the time will come when you will say, 'Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!' |
| 30Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. | 30Then "'they will say to the mountains, "Fall on us!" and to the hills, "Cover us!"' |
| 31For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry? | 31For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?" |
| 32And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death. | 32Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. |
| 33And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. | 33When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals--one on his right, the other on his left. |
| 34Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. | 34Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." And they divided up his clothes by casting lots. |
| 35And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God. | 35The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is God's Messiah, the Chosen One." |
| 36And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, | 36The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar |
| 37And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself. | 37and said, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself." |
| 38And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. | 38There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews. |
| 39And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. | 39One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!" |
| 40But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? | 40But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence? |
| 41And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. | 41We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong." |
| 42And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. | 42Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." |
| 43And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise. | 43Jesus answered him, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise." |
| 44And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. | 44It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, |
| 45And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. | 45for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. |
| 46And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. | 46Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." When he had said this, he breathed his last. |
| 47Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man. | 47The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, "Surely this was a righteous man." |
| 48And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned. | 48When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts and went away. |
| 49And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things. | 49But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things. |
| 50And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counseller; and he was a good man, and a just: | 50Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, |
| 51(The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God. | 51who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God. |
| 52This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. | 52Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus' body. |
| 53And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid. | 53Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. |
| 54And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on. | 54It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was about to begin. |
| 55And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid. | 55The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. |
| 56And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment. | 56Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment. |
