Berean Interlinear Bible The Soldiers Mock Jesus 1Τότε (At that time) οὖν (therefore) ἔλαβεν (took) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) καὶ (and) ἐμαστίγωσεν (flogged Him). 2καὶ (And) οἱ (the) στρατιῶται (soldiers), πλέξαντες (having twisted together) στέφανον (a crown) ἐξ (of) ἀκανθῶν (thorns), ἐπέθηκαν (put it on) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τῇ (the) κεφαλῇ (head), καὶ (and) ἱμάτιον (a robe) πορφυροῦν (purple) περιέβαλον (cast around) αὐτόν (Him), 3καὶ (and) ἤρχοντο (they began coming up) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) καὶ (and) ἔλεγον (saying), “Χαῖρε (Hail), ὁ (-) Βασιλεὺς (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)!” καὶ (And) ἐδίδοσαν (they kept giving) αὐτῷ (Him) ῥαπίσματα (blows with the palm). 4Καὶ (And) ἐξῆλθεν (went forth) πάλιν (again) ἔξω (outside) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), καὶ (and) λέγει (he says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἴδε (Behold), ἄγω (I bring) ὑμῖν (to you) αὐτὸν (Him) ἔξω (out), ἵνα (so that) γνῶτε (you may know) ὅτι (that) οὐδεμίαν (no) αἰτίαν (guilt) εὑρίσκω (I find) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him).” 5ἐξῆλθεν (Went forth) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἔξω (outside), φορῶν (wearing) τὸν (the) ἀκάνθινον (thorny) στέφανον (crown) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) πορφυροῦν (purple) ἱμάτιον (robe). καὶ (And) λέγει (he says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἰδοὺ (Behold) ὁ (the) ἄνθρωπος (man)!” 6Ὅτε (When) οὖν (therefore) εἶδον (saw) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ὑπηρέται (officers), ἐκραύγασαν (they cried out) λέγοντες (saying), “Σταύρωσον (Crucify)! σταύρωσον (Crucify)!” Λέγει (Says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Λάβετε (Take) αὐτὸν (Him) ὑμεῖς (yourselves) καὶ (and) σταυρώσατε (crucify Him); ἐγὼ (I) γὰρ (for) οὐχ (no) εὑρίσκω (find) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) αἰτίαν (guilt).” 7Ἀπεκρίθησαν (Answered) αὐτῷ (him) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), “Ἡμεῖς (We) νόμον (a law) ἔχομεν (have), καὶ (and) κατὰ (according to) τὸν (the) νόμον (law), ὀφείλει (He ought) ἀποθανεῖν (to die), ὅτι (because) Υἱὸν (the Son) Θεοῦ (of God) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ἐποίησεν (He made).” 8Ὅτε (When) οὖν (therefore) ἤκουσεν (heard) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) τοῦτον (this) τὸν (-) λόγον (word), μᾶλλον (the more) ἐφοβήθη (he was afraid). 9καὶ (And) εἰσῆλθεν (he went) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πραιτώριον (Praetorium) πάλιν (again), καὶ (and) λέγει (he says) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus), “Πόθεν (From where) εἶ (are) σύ (You)?” Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀπόκρισιν (an answer) οὐκ (not) ἔδωκεν (did give) αὐτῷ (him). 10Λέγει (Says) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῷ (to Him) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Ἐμοὶ (To me) οὐ (not) λαλεῖς (speak You)? οὐκ (Not) οἶδας (know You) ὅτι (that) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ἔχω (I have) ἀπολῦσαί (to release) σε (You), καὶ (and) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ἔχω (I have) σταυρῶσαί (to crucify) σε (You)?” 11Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) ‹αὐτῷ› (him) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Οὐκ (Not) εἶχες (you would have) ἐξουσίαν (authority) κατ’ (also) ἐμοῦ (Me) οὐδεμίαν (against), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἦν (it were) δεδομένον (given) σοι (to you) ἄνωθεν (from above). διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ὁ (the one) παραδούς (having delivered up) μέ (Me) σοι (to you), μείζονα (greater) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) ἔχει (has).” 12Ἐκ (Out of) τούτου (this) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ἐζήτει (was seeking) ἀπολῦσαι (to release) αὐτόν (Him); οἱ (-) δὲ (but) Ἰουδαῖοι (the Jews) ἐκραύγασαν (cried out), λέγοντες (saying), “Ἐὰν (If) τοῦτον (this man) ἀπολύσῃς (you release), οὐκ (not) εἶ (you are) φίλος (a friend) τοῦ (-) Καίσαρος (of Caesar). πᾶς (Everyone) ὁ (-) βασιλέα (a king) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ποιῶν (making), ἀντιλέγει (speaks against) τῷ (-) Καίσαρι (Caesar).” 13Ὁ (-) οὖν (Therefore) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), ἀκούσας (having heard) τῶν (the) λόγων (words) τούτων (these), ἤγαγεν (brought) ἔξω (out) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἐκάθισεν (sat down) ἐπὶ (upon) βήματος (the judgment seat) εἰς (at) τόπον (a place) λεγόμενον (called) Λιθόστρωτον (the Stone Pavement); Ἑβραϊστὶ (in Hebrew) δὲ (now), Γαββαθα (Gabbatha). 14ἦν (It was) δὲ (now) Παρασκευὴ (the Day of Preparation) τοῦ (of the) πάσχα (Passover); ὥρα (the hour) ἦν (was) ὡς (about) ἕκτη (the sixth). καὶ (And) λέγει (he says) τοῖς (to the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews), “Ἴδε (Behold) ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (king) ὑμῶν (of you)!” 15Ἐκραύγασαν (They cried out) οὖν (therefore), “Ἐκεῖνοι (With Him) Ἆρον (away), ἆρον (away)! σταύρωσον (Crucify) αὐτόν (Him)!” Λέγει (Says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Τὸν (The) Βασιλέα (King) ὑμῶν (of you) σταυρώσω (shall I crucify)?” Ἀπεκρίθησαν (Answered) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests), “Οὐκ (Not) ἔχομεν (we have) βασιλέα (a king), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) Καίσαρα (Caesar).” The Crucifixion 16Τότε (Then) οὖν (therefore) παρέδωκεν (he delivered) αὐτὸν (Him) αὐτοῖς (to them), ἵνα (that) σταυρωθῇ (He might be crucified). Παρέλαβον (They took) οὖν (therefore) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus). 17Καὶ (And) βαστάζων (bearing) ἑαυτῷ (His own) τὸν (-) σταυρὸν (cross), ἐξῆλθεν (He went out) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) λεγόμενον (called) Κρανίου (of the Skull) τόπον (Place), ὃ (which) λέγεται (is called) Ἑβραϊστὶ (in Hebrew) Γολγοθᾶ (Golgotha), 18ὅπου (where) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐσταύρωσαν (they crucified), καὶ (and) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἄλλους (others) δύο (two), ἐντεῦθεν (on this side) καὶ (and) ἐντεῦθεν (on that side), μέσον (in between) δὲ (now) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus). 19Ἔγραψεν (Wrote) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) τίτλον (a title) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) καὶ (and) ἔθηκεν (put it) ἐπὶ (on) τοῦ (the) σταυροῦ (cross). ἦν (It was) δὲ (now) γεγραμμένον (written): 20Τοῦτον (This) οὖν (therefore) τὸν (the) τίτλον (title) πολλοὶ (many) ἀνέγνωσαν (read) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews), ὅτι (for) ἐγγὺς (near) ἦν (was) ὁ (the) τόπος (place), τῆς (the) πόλεως (city), ὅπου (where) ἐσταυρώθη (was crucified) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἦν (it was) γεγραμμένον (written) Ἑβραϊστί (in Hebrew), Ῥωμαϊστί (in Latin), Ἑλληνιστί (in Greek). 21ἔλεγον (Were saying) οὖν (therefore) τῷ (-) Πιλάτῳ (to Pilate) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews), “Μὴ (Not) γράφε (write), ‘Ὁ (The) Βασιλεὺς (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews),’ ἀλλ’ (but) ὅτι (that) ἐκεῖνος (He) εἶπεν (said), ‘Βασιλεύς (King) εἰμι (I am) ⇔ «τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων» (Jews).’” 22Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Ὃ (What) γέγραφα (I have written), γέγραφα (I have written).” 23Οἱ (The) οὖν (then) στρατιῶται (soldiers), ὅτε (when) ἐσταύρωσαν (they crucified) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ἔλαβον (took) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments) αὐτοῦ (of Him) καὶ (and) ἐποίησαν (made) τέσσαρα (four) μέρη (parts), ἑκάστῳ (to each) στρατιώτῃ (soldier) μέρος (a part), καὶ (and also) τὸν (the) χιτῶνα (tunic). ἦν (Was) δὲ (now) ὁ (the) χιτὼν (tunic) ἄραφος (seamless), ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) ἄνωθεν (top) ὑφαντὸς (woven) δι’ (throughout) ὅλου (all). 24εἶπαν (They said) οὖν (therefore) πρὸς (to) ἀλλήλους (one another), “Μὴ (Not) σχίσωμεν (let us tear up) αὐτόν (it), ἀλλὰ (but) λάχωμεν (let us cast lots) περὶ (for) αὐτοῦ (it), τίνος (whose) ἔσται (it will be),” ἵνα (that) ἡ (the) γραφὴ (Scripture) πληρωθῇ (might be fulfilled) ‹ἡ (that) λέγουσα› (said): “Διεμερίσαντο (They divided) τὰ (the) ἱμάτιά (garments) μου (of Me) ἑαυτοῖς (among them), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (for) τὸν (the) ἱματισμόν (clothing) μου (of Me) ἔβαλον (they cast) κλῆρον (a lot).”a Οἱ (The) μὲν (indeed) οὖν (therefore) στρατιῶται (soldiers) ταῦτα (these things) ἐποίησαν (did). 25Εἱστήκεισαν (Had been standing) δὲ (now) παρὰ (by) τῷ (the) σταυρῷ (cross) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) ἡ (the) μήτηρ (mother) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀδελφὴ (sister) τῆς (of the) μητρὸς (mother) αὐτοῦ (of Him), Μαρία (Mary) ἡ (the wife) τοῦ (-) Κλωπᾶ (of Clopas), καὶ (and) Μαρία (Mary) ἡ (-) Μαγδαληνή (Magdalene). 26Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) οὖν (therefore), ἰδὼν (having seen) τὴν (His) μητέρα (mother) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) μαθητὴν (disciple) παρεστῶτα (standing by) ὃν (whom) ἠγάπα (He loved), λέγει (says) τῇ (to) μητρί (His mother), “Γύναι (Woman), ἴδε (behold), ὁ (the) υἱός (son) σου (of you).” 27εἶτα (Then) λέγει (He says) τῷ (to the) μαθητῇ (disciple), “Ἴδε (Behold) ἡ (the) μήτηρ (mother) σου (of you).” καὶ (And) ἀπ’ (from) ἐκείνης (that) τῆς (-) ὥρας (hour) ἔλαβεν (took) ὁ (the) μαθητὴς (disciple) αὐτὴν (her) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) ἴδια (own). The Death of Jesus 28Μετὰ (After) τοῦτο (this), εἰδὼς (knowing) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ὅτι (that) ἤδη (now) πάντα (all things) τετέλεσται (had been accomplished), ἵνα (so that) τελειωθῇ (might be fulfilled) ἡ (the) γραφὴ (Scripture), λέγει (He says), “Διψῶ (I thirst).” 29σκεῦος (A vessel) ἔκειτο (had been set there) ὄξους (of sour wine) μεστόν (full); σπόγγον (a sponge) οὖν (therefore) μεστὸν (filled) τοῦ (with) ὄξους (sour wine), ὑσσώπῳ (a stalk of hyssop) περιθέντες (having put on), προσήνεγκαν (they brought) αὐτοῦ (it) τῷ (to the) στόματι (mouth). 30ὅτε (When) οὖν (therefore) ἔλαβεν (took) τὸ (the) ὄξος (sour wine) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), εἶπεν (He said), “Τετέλεσται (It has been finished).” καὶ (And) κλίνας (having bowed) τὴν (the) κεφαλὴν (head), παρέδωκεν (He yielded up) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (spirit). Jesus' Side is Pierced 31Οἱ (-) οὖν (Therefore) Ἰουδαῖοι (the Jews), ἐπεὶ (because) Παρασκευὴ (the Preparation) ἦν (it was), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) μείνῃ (would remain) ἐπὶ (on) τοῦ (the) σταυροῦ (cross) τὰ (the) σώματα (bodies) ἐν (on) τῷ (the) σαββάτῳ (Sabbath)— ἦν (was) γὰρ (for) μεγάλη (a high) ἡ (-) ἡμέρα (day) ἐκείνου (that) τοῦ (-) σαββάτου (Sabbath)— ἠρώτησαν (asked) τὸν (-) Πιλᾶτον (Pilate) ἵνα (that) κατεαγῶσιν (might be broken) αὐτῶν (their) τὰ (-) σκέλη (legs), καὶ (and) ἀρθῶσιν (they might be taken away). 32ἦλθον (Came) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) στρατιῶται (soldiers), καὶ (and) τοῦ (of the) μὲν (indeed) πρώτου (first) κατέαξαν (broke) τὰ (the) σκέλη (legs), καὶ (and) τοῦ (of the) ἄλλου (other) τοῦ (-) συσταυρωθέντος (having been crucified with) αὐτῷ (Him); 33ἐπὶ (to) δὲ (however) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἐλθόντες (having come), ὡς (when) εἶδον (they saw) ἤδη (already) αὐτὸν (Him) τεθνηκότα (having been dead), οὐ (not) κατέαξαν (they did break) αὐτοῦ (His) τὰ (-) σκέλη (legs). 34ἀλλ’ (But) εἷς (one) τῶν (of the) στρατιωτῶν (soldiers) λόγχῃ (with a spear) αὐτοῦ (His) τὴν (-) πλευρὰν (side) ἔνυξεν (pierced), καὶ (and) ἐξῆλθεν (came out) εὐθὺς (immediately) αἷμα (blood) καὶ (and) ὕδωρ (water). 35καὶ (And) ὁ (the one) ἑωρακὼς (having seen) μεμαρτύρηκεν (has borne witness), καὶ (and) ἀληθινὴ (true) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony). καὶ (And) ἐκεῖνος (He) οἶδεν (knows) ὅτι (that) ἀληθῆ (truth) λέγει (he is speaking), ἵνα (that) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) πιστεύητε (might believe). 36Ἐγένετο (Took place) γὰρ (for) ταῦτα (these things) ἵνα (so that) ἡ (the) γραφὴ (Scripture) πληρωθῇ (might be fulfilled): “Ὀστοῦν (Bone) οὐ (not one) συντριβήσεται (will be broken) αὐτοῦ (of Him).”b 37καὶ (And) πάλιν (again), ἑτέρα (another) γραφὴ (Scripture) λέγει (says): “Ὄψονται (They will look) εἰς (on) ὃν (the One) ἐξεκέντησαν (they have pierced).”c The Burial of Jesus 38Μετὰ (After) δὲ (then) ταῦτα (these things), ἠρώτησεν (asked) τὸν (-) Πιλᾶτον (Pilate) Ἰωσὴφ (Joseph) [ὁ] (-) ἀπὸ (from) Ἁριμαθαίας (Arimathea), ὢν (being) μαθητὴς (a disciple) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus)— κεκρυμμένος (concealed) δὲ (however) διὰ (through) τὸν (the) φόβον (fear) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)— ἵνα (that) ἄρῃ (he might take away) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus); καὶ (and) ἐπέτρεψεν (gave permission) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate). ἦλθεν (He came) οὖν (therefore) καὶ (and) ἦρεν (took away) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) αὐτοῦ (of Him). 39ἦλθεν (Came) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) Νικόδημος (Nicodemus), ὁ (the one) ἐλθὼν (having come) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) νυκτὸς (by night) τὸ (at the) πρῶτον (first), φέρων (bearing) μίγμα (a mixture) σμύρνης (of myrrh) καὶ (and) ἀλόης (aloes), ὡς (about) λίτρας (litras) ἑκατόν (a hundred).d 40ἔλαβον (They took) οὖν (therefore) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) καὶ (and) ἔδησαν (bound) αὐτὸ (it) ὀθονίοις (in linen cloths), μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) ἀρωμάτων (spices), καθὼς (as) ἔθος (the custom) ἐστὶν (is) τοῖς (among the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews) ἐνταφιάζειν (to prepare for burial). 41Ἦν (There was) δὲ (now) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) τόπῳ (place) ὅπου (where) ἐσταυρώθη (He was crucified) κῆπος (a garden), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κήπῳ (garden) μνημεῖον (a tomb) καινόν (new), ἐν (in) ᾧ (which) οὐδέπω (not yet) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἦν (was) τεθειμένος (laid).
