| 1After this, Jesus crossed over to the far side of the Sea of Galilee, also known as the Sea of Tiberias. | 1After this, Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee (or Tiberias). |
| 2A huge crowd kept following him wherever he went, because they saw his miraculous signs as he healed the sick. | 2And a huge crowd was following Him because they saw the signs that He was performing by healing the sick. |
| 3Then Jesus climbed a hill and sat down with his disciples around him. | 3So Jesus went up a mountain and sat down there with His disciples. |
| 4(It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration.) | 4Now the Passover, a Jewish festival, was near. |
| 5Jesus soon saw a huge crowd of people coming to look for him. Turning to Philip, he asked, “Where can we buy bread to feed all these people?” | 5Therefore, when Jesus looked up and noticed a huge crowd coming toward Him, He asked Philip, "Where will we buy bread so these people can eat?" |
| 6He was testing Philip, for he already knew what he was going to do. | 6He asked this to test him, for He Himself knew what He was going to do. |
| 7Philip replied, “Even if we worked for months, we wouldn’t have enough money to feed them!” | 7Philip answered, "Two hundred denarii worth of bread wouldn't be enough for each of them to have a little." |
| 8Then Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up. | 8One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to Him, " |
| 9“There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?” | 9There's a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish--but what are they for so many?" |
| 10 “Tell everyone to sit down,” Jesus said. So they all sat down on the grassy slopes. (The men alone numbered about 5,000.) | 10Then Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." There was plenty of grass in that place, so they sat down. The men numbered about 5,000. |
| 11Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks to God, and distributed them to the people. Afterward he did the same with the fish. And they all ate as much as they wanted. | 11Then Jesus took the loaves, and after giving thanks He distributed them to those who were seated--so also with the fish, as much as they wanted. |
| 12After everyone was full, Jesus told his disciples, “Now gather the leftovers, so that nothing is wasted.” | 12When they were full, He told His disciples, "Collect the leftovers so that nothing is wasted." |
| 13So they picked up the pieces and filled twelve baskets with scraps left by the people who had eaten from the five barley loaves. | 13So they collected them and filled 12 baskets with the pieces from the five barley loaves that were left over by those who had eaten. |
| 14When the people saw him do this miraculous sign, they exclaimed, “Surely, he is the Prophet we have been expecting!” | 14When the people saw the sign He had done, they said, "This really is the Prophet who was to come into the world!" |
| 15When Jesus saw that they were ready to force him to be their king, he slipped away into the hills by himself. Jesus Walks on Water | 15Therefore, when Jesus knew that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He withdrew again to the mountain by Himself. |
| 16That evening Jesus’ disciples went down to the shore to wait for him. | 16When evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, |
| 17But as darkness fell and Jesus still hadn’t come back, they got into the boat and headed across the lake toward Capernaum. | 17got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. Darkness had already set in, but Jesus had not yet come to them. |
| 18Soon a gale swept down upon them, and the sea grew very rough. | 18Then a high wind arose, and the sea began to churn. |
| 19They had rowed three or four miles when suddenly they saw Jesus walking on the water toward the boat. They were terrified, | 19After they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea. He was coming near the boat, and they were afraid. |
| 20but he called out to them, “Don’t be afraid. I am here! ” | 20But He said to them, "It is I. Don't be afraid!" |
| 21Then they were eager to let him in the boat, and immediately they arrived at their destination! Jesus, the Bread of Life | 21Then they were willing to take Him on board, and at once the boat was at the shore where they were heading. |
| 22The next day the crowd that had stayed on the far shore saw that the disciples had taken the only boat, and they realized Jesus had not gone with them. | 22The next day, the crowd that had stayed on the other side of the sea knew there had been only one boat. They also knew that Jesus had not boarded the boat with His disciples, but that His disciples had gone off alone. |
| 23Several boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the Lord had blessed the bread and the people had eaten. | 23Some boats from Tiberias came near the place where they ate the bread after the Lord gave thanks. |
| 24So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went across to Capernaum to look for him. | 24When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor His disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus. |
| 25They found him on the other side of the lake and asked, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” | 25When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, "Rabbi, when did You get here?" |
| 26Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs. | 26Jesus answered, "I assure you: You are looking for Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate the loaves and were filled. |
| 27 But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you. For God the Father has given me the seal of his approval.” | 27Don't work for the food that perishes but for the food that lasts for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal of approval on Him."" |
| 28They replied, “We want to perform God’s works, too. What should we do?” | 28What can we do to perform the works of God?" they asked. |
| 29Jesus told them, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.” | 29Jesus replied, "This is the work of God--that you believe in the One He has sent."" |
| 30They answered, “Show us a miraculous sign if you want us to believe in you. What can you do? | 30What sign then are You going to do so we may see and believe You?" they asked. "What are You going to perform? |
| 31After all, our ancestors ate manna while they journeyed through the wilderness! The Scriptures say, ‘Moses gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ” | 31Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, just as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat." |
| 32Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, Moses didn’t give you bread from heaven. My Father did. And now he offers you the true bread from heaven. | 32Jesus said to them, "I assure you: Moses didn't give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the real bread from heaven. |
| 33 The true bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” | 33For the bread of God is the One who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." |
| 34“Sir,” they said, “give us that bread every day.” | 34Then they said, "Sir, give us this bread always!" |
| 35Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. | 35"I am the bread of life," Jesus told them. "No one who comes to Me will ever be hungry, and no one who believes in Me will ever be thirsty again. |
| 36 But you haven’t believed in me even though you have seen me. | 36But as I told you, you've seen Me, and yet you do not believe. |
| 37 However, those the Father has given me will come to me, and I will never reject them. | 37Everyone the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never cast out. |
| 38 For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will. | 38For I have come down from heaven, not to do My will, but the will of Him who sent Me. |
| 39 And this is the will of God, that I should not lose even one of all those he has given me, but that I should raise them up at the last day. | 39This is the will of Him who sent Me: that I should lose none of those He has given Me but should raise them up on the last day. |
| 40 For it is my Father’s will that all who see his Son and believe in him should have eternal life. I will raise them up at the last day.” | 40For this is the will of My Father: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day." |
| 41Then the people began to murmur in disagreement because he had said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” | 41Therefore the Jews started complaining about Him because He said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven." |
| 42They said, “Isn’t this Jesus, the son of Joseph? We know his father and mother. How can he say, ‘I came down from heaven’?” | 42They were saying, "Isn't this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can He now say, I have come down from heaven?" |
| 43But Jesus replied, “Stop complaining about what I said. | 43Jesus answered them, "Stop complaining among yourselves. |
| 44 For no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me, and at the last day I will raise them up. | 44No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up on the last day. |
| 45 As it is written in the Scriptures, ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me. | 45It is written in the Prophets: And they will all be taught by God. Everyone who has listened to and learned from the Father comes to Me-- |
| 46 (Not that anyone has ever seen the Father; only I, who was sent from God, have seen him.) | 46not that anyone has seen the Father except the One who is from God. He has seen the Father. |
| 47 “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes has eternal life. | 47"I assure you: Anyone who believes has eternal life. |
| 48 Yes, I am the bread of life! | 48I am the bread of life. |
| 49 Your ancestors ate manna in the wilderness, but they all died. | 49Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. |
| 50 Anyone who eats the bread from heaven, however, will never die. | 50This is the bread that comes down from heaven so that anyone may eat of it and not die. |
| 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever; and this bread, which I will offer so the world may live, is my flesh.” | 51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread he will live forever. The bread that I will give for the life of the world is My flesh." |
| 52Then the people began arguing with each other about what he meant. “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” they asked. | 52At that, the Jews argued among themselves, "How can this man give us His flesh to eat?" |
| 53So Jesus said again, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you cannot have eternal life within you. | 53So Jesus said to them, "I assure you: Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you do not have life in yourselves. |
| 54 But anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise that person at the last day. | 54Anyone who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day, |
| 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. | 55because My flesh is real food and My blood is real drink. |
| 56 Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. | 56The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood lives in Me, and I in him. |
| 57 I live because of the living Father who sent me; in the same way, anyone who feeds on me will live because of me. | 57Just as the living Father sent Me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on Me will live because of Me. |
| 58 I am the true bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will not die as your ancestors did (even though they ate the manna) but will live forever.” | 58This is the bread that came down from heaven; it is not like the manna your fathers ate--and they died. The one who eats this bread will live forever." |

| 60Many of his disciples said, “This is very hard to understand. How can anyone accept it?” | 60Therefore, when many of His disciples heard this, they said, "This teaching is hard! Who can accept it?" |
| 61Jesus was aware that his disciples were complaining, so he said to them, “Does this offend you? | 61Jesus, knowing in Himself that His disciples were complaining about this, asked them, "Does this offend you? |
| 62 Then what will you think if you see the Son of Man ascend to heaven again? | 62Then what if you were to observe the Son of Man ascending to where He was before? |
| 63 The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life. | 63The Spirit is the One who gives life. The flesh doesn't help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. |
| 64 But some of you do not believe me.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning which ones didn’t believe, and he knew who would betray him.) | 64But there are some among you who don't believe." (For Jesus knew from the beginning those who would not believe and the one who would betray Him.) |
| 65Then he said, “That is why I said that people can’t come to me unless the Father gives them to me.” | 65He said, "This is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless it is granted to him by the Father." |
| 66At this point many of his disciples turned away and deserted him. | 66From that moment many of His disciples turned back and no longer accompanied Him. |
| 67Then Jesus turned to the Twelve and asked, “Are you also going to leave?” | 67Therefore Jesus said to the Twelve, "You don't want to go away too, do you?" |
| 68Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words that give eternal life. | 68Simon Peter answered, "Lord, who will we go to? You have the words of eternal life. |
| 69We believe, and we know you are the Holy One of God. ” | 69We have come to believe and know that You are the Holy One of God!" |
| 70Then Jesus said, “I chose the twelve of you, but one is a devil.” | 70Jesus replied to them, "Didn't I choose you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is the Devil!" |
| 71He was speaking of Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, one of the Twelve, who would later betray him. | 71He was referring to Judas, Simon Iscariot's son, one of the Twelve, because he was going to betray Him. |
