After these things Jesus walked in Galilee; for He did not want to walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill Him. | 1After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him. |
Now the Jews’ Feast of Tabernacles was at hand. | 2Now the Jews’ Feast of Booths was at hand. |
His brothers therefore said to Him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that Your disciples also may see the works that You are doing. | 3So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. |
For no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be known openly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.” | 4For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” |
For even His brothers did not believe in Him. | 5For not even his brothers believed in him. |
Then Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready. | 6Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. |
The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it that its works are evil. | 7The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil. |
You go up to this feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, for My time has not yet fully come.” | 8You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.” |
When He had said these things to them, He remained in Galilee. | 9After saying this, he remained in Galilee. |
But when His brothers had gone up, then He also went up to the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret. | 10But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private. |
Then the Jews sought Him at the feast, and said, “Where is He?” | 11The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and saying, “Where is he?” |
And there was much complaining among the people concerning Him. Some said, “He is good”; others said, “No, on the contrary, He deceives the people.” | 12And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, “He is a good man,” others said, “No, he is leading the people astray.” |
However, no one spoke openly of Him for fear of the Jews. | 13Yet for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him. |
Now about the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and taught. | 14About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching. |
And the Jews marveled, saying, “How does this Man know letters, having never studied?” | 15The Jews therefore marveled, saying, “How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?” |
Jesus answered them and said, “My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. | 16So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. |
If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority. | 17If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority. |
He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and no unrighteousness is in Him. | 18The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood. |
Did not Moses give you the law, yet none of you keeps the law? Why do you seek to kill Me?” | 19Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?” |
The people answered and said, “You have a demon. Who is seeking to kill You?” | 20The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?” |
Jesus answered and said to them, “I did one work, and you all marvel. | 21Jesus answered them, “I did one work, and you all marvel at it. |
Moses therefore gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. | 22Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. |
If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses should not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath? | 23If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man’s whole body well? |
Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.” | 24Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.” |
Now some of them from Jerusalem said, “Is this not He whom they seek to kill? | 25Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill? |
But look! He speaks boldly, and they say nothing to Him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is truly the Christ? | 26And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ? |
However, we know where this Man is from; but when the Christ comes, no one knows where He is from.” | 27But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from.” |
Then Jesus cried out, as He taught in the temple, saying, “You both know Me, and you know where I am from; and I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know. | 28So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I come from. But I have not come of my own accord. He who sent me is true, and him you do not know. |
But I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me.” | 29I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.” |
Therefore they sought to take Him; but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come. | 30So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. |
And many of the people believed in Him, and said, “When the Christ comes, will He do more signs than these which this Man has done?” | 31Yet many of the people believed in him. They said, “When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?” |
The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things concerning Him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take Him. | 32The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him. |
Then Jesus said to them, “I shall be with you a little while longer, and then I go to Him who sent Me. | 33Jesus then said, “I will be with you a little longer, and then I am going to him who sent me. |
You will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you cannot come.” | 34You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come.” |
Then the Jews said among themselves, “Where does He intend to go that we shall not find Him? Does He intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? | 35The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find him? Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? |
What is this thing that He said, ‘You will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you cannot come’?” | 36What does he mean by saying, ‘You will seek me and you will not find me,’ and, ‘Where I am you cannot come’?” |
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. | 37On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. |
He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” | 38Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” |
But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. | 39Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. |
Therefore many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, “Truly this is the Prophet.” | 40When they heard these words, some of the people said, “This really is the Prophet.” |
Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Will the Christ come out of Galilee? | 41Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Is the Christ to come from Galilee? |
Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, where David was?” | 42Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” |
So there was a division among the people because of Him. | 43So there was a division among the people over him. |
Now some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on Him. | 44Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him. |
Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why have you not brought Him?” | 45The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?” |
The officers answered, “No man ever spoke like this Man!” | 46The officers answered, “No one ever spoke like this man!” |
Then the Pharisees answered them, “Are you also deceived? | 47The Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been deceived? |
Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him? | 48Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him? |
But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.” | 49But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.” |
Nicodemus (he who came to Jesus by night, being one of them) said to them, | 50Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, |
“Does our law judge a man before it hears him and knows what he is doing?” | 51“Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?” |
They answered and said to him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search and look, for no prophet has arisen out of Galilee.” | 52They replied, “Are you from Galilee too? Search and see that no prophet arises from Galilee.” |
And everyone went to his own house. | 53[[They went each to his own house, |
