On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared. 1On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.
They found the stone rolled away from the tomb. 2They found the stone rolled away from the tomb,
They went in but did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.3but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood by them in dazzling clothes. 4While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them.
So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground." Why are you looking for the living among the dead?" asked the men. "5In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead?
He is not here, but He has been resurrected! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee,6He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee:
saying, The Son of Man must be betrayed into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day?"7The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.' "
And they remembered His words. 8Then they remembered his words.
Returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven and to all the rest. 9When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others.
Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them were telling the apostles these things.10It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles.
But these words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe the women. 11But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.
Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. When he stooped to look in, he saw only the linen cloths. So he went home, amazed at what had happened. 12Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.
Now that same day two of them were on their way to a village called Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem.13Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem.
Together they were discussing everything that had taken place. 14They were talking with each other about everything that had happened.
And while they were discussing and arguing, Jesus Himself came near and began to walk along with them. 15As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them;
But they were prevented from recognizing Him.16but they were kept from recognizing him.
Then He asked them, "What is this dispute that you're having with each other as you are walking?" And they stopped walking and looked discouraged. 17He asked them, "What are you discussing together as you walk along?" They stood still, their faces downcast.
The one named Cleopas answered Him, "Are You the only visitor in Jerusalem who doesn't know the things that happened there in these days?" 18One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, "Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?"
"What things?" He asked them. So they said to Him, "The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a Prophet powerful in action and speech before God and all the people,19"What things?" he asked. "About Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. "He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people.
and how our chief priests and leaders handed Him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified Him.20The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him;
But we were hoping that He was the One who was about to redeem Israel. Besides all this, it's the third day since these things happened. 21but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place.
Moreover, some women from our group astounded us. They arrived early at the tomb, 22In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning
and when they didn't find His body, they came and reported that they had seen a vision of angels who said He was alive. 23but didn't find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive.
Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they didn't see Him." 24Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus."
He said to them, "How unwise and slow you are to believe in your hearts all that the prophets have spoken! 25He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken!
Didn't the Messiah have to suffer these things and enter into His glory?"26Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?"
Then beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He interpreted for them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures. 27And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
They came near the village where they were going, and He gave the impression that He was going farther.28As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther.
But they urged Him: "Stay with us, because it's almost evening, and now the day is almost over." So He went in to stay with them. 29But they urged him strongly, "Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over." So he went in to stay with them.
It was as He reclined at the table with them that He took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 30When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them.
Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him, but He disappeared from their sight.31Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.
So they said to each other, "Weren't our hearts ablaze within us while He was talking with us on the road and explaining the Scriptures to us?"32They asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?"
That very hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem. They found the Eleven and those with them gathered together, 33They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together
who said, "The Lord has certainly been raised, and has appeared to Simon!"34and saying, "It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon."
Then they began to describe what had happened on the road and how He was made known to them in the breaking of the bread. 35Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.
And as they were saying these things, He Himself stood among them. He said to them, "Peace to you!"36While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you."
But they were startled and terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost. 37They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.
"Why are you troubled?" He asked them. "And why do doubts arise in your hearts? 38He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds?
Look at My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself! Touch Me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have."39Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have."
Having said this, He showed them His hands and feet. 40When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet.
But while they still were amazed and unbelieving because of their joy, He asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?"41And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?"
So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish,42They gave him a piece of broiled fish,
and He took it and ate in their presence. 43and he took it and ate it in their presence.
Then He told them, "These are My words that I spoke to you while I was still with you--that everything written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled."44He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms."
Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. 45Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.
He also said to them, "This is what is written: The Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead the third day, 46He told them, "This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,
and repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 47and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
You are witnesses of these things.48You are witnesses of these things.
And look, I am sending you what My Father promised. As for you, stay in the city until you are empowered from on high." 49I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."
Then He led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up His hands He blessed them. 50When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them.
And while He was blessing them, He left them and was carried up into heaven.51While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.
After worshiping Him, they returned to Jerusalem with great joy.52Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.
And they were continually in the temple complex praising God. 53And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.
