For they have all been consigned to death, to the depths of the earth, among the mortals who descend to the Pit.’ 15This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘On the day it was brought down to Sheol, I caused mourning. I covered the deep because of it; I held back its rivers; its abundant waters were restrained. Then all the trees of Eden, the choicest and best of Lebanon, all the well-watered trees, were consoled in the earth below.…

3. of the glory of Assyria
10. and the fall thereof for pride
18. The like destruction of Egypt

This is what the Lord GOD says
This phrase emphasizes the divine authority and sovereignty of God. The Hebrew term for "Lord GOD" is "Adonai Yahweh," which underscores God's supreme power and covenantal relationship with His people. It is a reminder that the message comes directly from the Creator, who is both just and merciful.

On the day it was brought down to Sheol
"Sheol" refers to the abode of the dead in Hebrew thought, a shadowy place of silence and forgetfulness. The imagery of being "brought down" signifies a fall from power and glory, often associated with judgment. This reflects the fate of nations or individuals who rise in pride against God.

I caused the deep to mourn and cover it
The "deep" (Hebrew: "tehom") is often associated with the primordial waters of chaos. Here, it is personified as mourning, indicating a cosmic response to the fall of a great power. This mourning signifies the disruption of order and the impact of divine judgment on creation.

I restrained its rivers, and abundant waters were withheld
Rivers and waters symbolize life, prosperity, and sustenance. The act of restraining them signifies a divine intervention that leads to desolation and drought. This imagery is a powerful reminder of God's control over nature and His ability to withhold blessings as a form of judgment.

I clothed Lebanon in black for it
Lebanon, known for its majestic cedars, represents strength and beauty. To "clothe in black" is a metaphor for mourning and lamentation. This phrase indicates the widespread impact of the judgment, affecting even the most splendid and seemingly untouchable parts of creation.

and all the trees of the field wilted away because of it
Trees often symbolize nations or leaders in biblical literature. The wilting of trees signifies the withering of life and vitality, a direct consequence of divine judgment. This serves as a warning of the fragility of human power and the ultimate authority of God over all creation.

(15) I covered the deep for him.--Ezekiel 31:15-17 describe the effect of Assyria's fall. Ezekiel 31:15 speaks of the mourning of the nations and of the drying up of the streams, or sources of Assyria's prosperity. "The deep" is the same as in Ezekiel 31:4, the flood of waters which fertilised the great cedar; this is covered, as in mourning. "Floods" is the same word as "rivers" in Ezekiel 31:4, and "great waters" as "multitude of waters" in Ezekiel 31:5. "To mourn" is, literally, to be black, and the sense is well given in our version, although the original is more appropriate to the figure of Lebanon with its cedars. "The trees of the field" are, of course, the subordinate potentates, who are dismayed, "faint," at Assyria's fall. (Comp. Ezekiel 26:15-18.) . . . Verse 15. - I covered the deep for him. The face of the whole world of nature is painted by the prophet as sharing in the awe and terror of that tremendous fail Lebanon was made to mourn (literally, to be black), the waters failed in their channels, the trees (all that drink water) shuddered. They formed part, as it were, of the pageantry of woe at the funeral of the fallen kingdom. It is as if the prophet felt, in all its intensity, what we have learnt to call the sympathy of nature with the sorrows of humanity. It would, perhaps, be over-literal to press details; but the picture, in one of its features at least, suggests a failure of the inundation of the Nile, like that indicated in Ezekiel 30:12.
