Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes.1On the other side of the sea, they arrived in the region of the Gerasenes.
And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,2As soon as Jesus got out of the boat, He was met by a man with an unclean spirit, who was coming from the tombs.
who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind him, not even with chains,3This man had been living in the tombs and could no longer be restrained, even with chains.
because he had often been bound with shackles and chains. And the chains had been pulled apart by him, and the shackles broken in pieces; neither could anyone tame him.4Though he was often bound with chains and shackles, he had broken the chains and shattered the shackles. Now there was no one with the strength to subdue him.
And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones.5Night and day in the tombs and in the mountains he kept crying out and cutting himself with stones.
When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him.6When the man saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees before Him.
And he cried out with a loud voice and said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God that You do not torment me.”7And he shouted in a loud voice, “What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You before God not to torture me!”
For He said to him, “Come out of the man, unclean spirit!”8For Jesus had already declared, “Come out of this man, you unclean spirit!”
Then He asked him, “What is your name?” And he answered, saying, “My name is Legion; for we are many.”9“What is your name?” Jesus asked. “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.”
Also he begged Him earnestly that He would not send them out of the country.10And he begged Jesus repeatedly not to send them out of that region.
Now a large herd of swine was feeding there near the mountains.11There on the nearby hillside a large herd of pigs was feeding.
So all the demons begged Him, saying, “Send us to the swine, that we may enter them.”12So the demons begged Jesus, “Send us to the pigs, so that we may enter them.”
And at once Jesus gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits went out and entered the swine (there were about two thousand); and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and drowned in the sea.13He gave them permission, and the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs, and the herd of about two thousand rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the water.
So those who fed the swine fled, and they told it in the city and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that had happened.14Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.
Then they came to Jesus, and saw the one who had been demon-possessed and had the legion, sitting and clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid.15When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons sitting there, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
And those who saw it told them how it happened to him who had been demon-possessed, and about the swine.16Those who had seen it described what had happened to the demon-possessed man and also to the pigs.
Then they began to plead with Him to depart from their region.17And the people began to beg Jesus to leave their region.
And when He got into the boat, he who had been demon-possessed begged Him that he might be with Him.18As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed by the demons begged to go with Him.
However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, “Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you.”19But Jesus would not allow him. “Go home to your own people,” He said, “and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and what mercy He has shown you.”
And he departed and began to proclaim in Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him; and all marveled.20So the man went away and began to proclaim throughout the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And everyone was amazed.
Now when Jesus had crossed over again by boat to the other side, a great multitude gathered to Him; and He was by the sea.21When Jesus had again crossed by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him beside the sea.
And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name. And when he saw Him, he fell at His feet22A synagogue leader named Jairus arrived, and seeing Jesus, he fell at His feet
and begged Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter lies at the point of death. Come and lay Your hands on her, that she may be healed, and she will live.”23and pleaded with Him urgently, “My little daughter is near death. Please come and place Your hands on her, so that she will be healed and live.”
So Jesus went with him, and a great multitude followed Him and thronged Him.24So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd followed and pressed around Him.
Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years,25And a woman was there who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years.
and had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse.26She had borne much agony under the care of many physicians and had spent all she had, but to no avail. Instead, her condition had only grown worse.
When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment.27When the woman heard about Jesus, she came up through the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak.
For she said, “If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.”28For she kept saying, “If only I touch His garments, I will be healed.”
Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction.29Immediately her bleeding stopped, and she sensed in her body that she was healed of her affliction.
And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My clothes?”30At once Jesus was aware that power had gone out from Him. Turning to the crowd, He asked, “Who touched My garments?”
But His disciples said to Him, “You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’ ”31His disciples answered, “You can see the crowd pressing in on You, and yet You ask, ‘Who touched Me?’ ”
And He looked around to see her who had done this thing.32But He kept looking around to see who had done this.
But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth.33Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him trembling in fear, and she told Him the whole truth.
And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.”34“Daughter,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be free of your affliction.”
While He was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”35While He was still speaking, messengers from the house of Jairus arrived and said, “Your daughter is dead; why bother the Teacher anymore?”
As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid; only believe.”36But Jesus overheard their conversation and said to Jairus, “Do not be afraid; just believe.”
And He permitted no one to follow Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.37And He did not allow anyone to accompany Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.
Then He came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw a tumult and those who wept and wailed loudly.38When they arrived at the house of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw the commotion and the people weeping and wailing loudly.
When He came in, He said to them, “Why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but sleeping.”39He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead, but asleep.”
And they ridiculed Him. But when He had put them all outside, He took the father and the mother of the child, and those who were with Him, and entered where the child was lying.40And they laughed at Him. After He had put them all outside, He took the child’s father and mother and His own companions, and went in to see the child.
Then He took the child by the hand, and said to her, “Talitha, cumi,” which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.”41Taking her by the hand, Jesus said, “Talitha koum!” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”
Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of age. And they were overcome with great amazement.42Immediately the girl got up and began to walk around. She was twelve years old, and at once they were utterly astounded.
But He commanded them strictly that no one should know it, and said that something should be given her to eat.43Then Jesus gave strict orders that no one should know about this, and He told them to give her something to eat.
