| 1They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. | 1They came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gerasenes. |
| 2When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him. | 2When He got out of the boat, immediately a man from the tombs with an unclean spirit met Him, |
| 3This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. | 3and he had his dwelling among the tombs. And no one was able to bind him anymore, even with a chain; |
| 4For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. | 4because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him and the shackles broken in pieces, and no one was strong enough to subdue him. |
| 5Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones. | 5Constantly, night and day, he was screaming among the tombs and in the mountains, and gashing himself with stones. |
| 6When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. | 6Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him; |
| 7He shouted at the top of his voice, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God's name don't torture me!" | 7and shouting with a loud voice, he said, "What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!" |
| 8For Jesus had said to him, "Come out of this man, you impure spirit!" | 8For He had been saying to him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!" |
| 9Then Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "My name is Legion," he replied, "for we are many." | 9And He was asking him, "What is your name?" And he said to Him, "My name is Legion; for we are many." |
| 10And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area. | 10And he began to implore Him earnestly not to send them out of the country. |
| 11A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. | 11Now there was a large herd of swine feeding nearby on the mountain. |
| 12The demons begged Jesus, "Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them." | 12The demons implored Him, saying, "Send us into the swine so that we may enter them." |
| 13He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned. | 13Jesus gave them permission. And coming out, the unclean spirits entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, about two thousand of them; and they were drowned in the sea. |
| 14Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. | 14Their herdsmen ran away and reported it in the city and in the country. And the people came to see what it was that had happened. |
| 15When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. | 15They came to Jesus and observed the man who had been demon-possessed sitting down, clothed and in his right mind, the very man who had had the "legion"; and they became frightened. |
| 16Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man--and told about the pigs as well. | 16Those who had seen it described to them how it had happened to the demon-possessed man, and all about the swine. |
| 17Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region. | 17And they began to implore Him to leave their region. |
| 18As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. | 18As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed was imploring Him that he might accompany Him. |
| 19Jesus did not let him, but said, "Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you." | 19And He did not let him, but He said to him, "Go home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you." |
| 20So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed. | 20And he went away and began to proclaim in Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed. |
| 21When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake. | 21When Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him; and so He stayed by the seashore. |
| 22Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. | 22One of the synagogue officials named Jairus came up, and on seeing Him, fell at His feet |
| 23He pleaded earnestly with him, "My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live." | 23and implored Him earnestly, saying, "My little daughter is at the point of death; please come and lay Your hands on her, so that she will get well and live." |
| 24So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him. | 24And He went off with him; and a large crowd was following Him and pressing in on Him. |
| 25And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. | 25A woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years, |
| 26She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. | 26and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse-- |
| 27When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, | 27after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak. |
| 28because she thought, "If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed." | 28For she thought, "If I just touch His garments, I will get well." |
| 29Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering. | 29Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction. |
| 30At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?" | 30Immediately Jesus, perceiving in Himself that the power proceeding from Him had gone forth, turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched My garments?" |
| 31"You see the people crowding against you," his disciples answered, "and yet you can ask, 'Who touched me?' " | 31And His disciples said to Him, "You see the crowd pressing in on You, and You say, 'Who touched Me?'" |
| 32But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. | 32And He looked around to see the woman who had done this. |
| 33Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. | 33But the woman fearing and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. |
| 34He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering." | 34And He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace and be healed of your affliction." |
| 35While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. "Your daughter is dead," they said. "Why bother the teacher anymore?" | 35While He was still speaking, they came from the house of the synagogue official, saying, "Your daughter has died; why trouble the Teacher anymore?" |
| 36Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, "Don't be afraid; just believe." | 36But Jesus, overhearing what was being spoken, said to the synagogue official, "Do not be afraid any longer, only believe." |
| 37He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James. | 37And He allowed no one to accompany Him, except Peter and James and John the brother of James. |
| 38When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. | 38They came to the house of the synagogue official; and He saw a commotion, and people loudly weeping and wailing. |
| 39He went in and said to them, "Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep." | 39And entering in, He said to them, "Why make a commotion and weep? The child has not died, but is asleep." |
| 40But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child's father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. | 40They began laughing at Him. But putting them all out, He took along the child's father and mother and His own companions, and entered the room where the child was. |
| 41He took her by the hand and said to her, "Talitha koum!" (which means "Little girl, I say to you, get up!"). | 41Taking the child by the hand, He said to her, "Talitha kum!" (which translated means, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!"). |
| 42Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. | 42Immediately the girl got up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were completely astounded. |
| 43He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat. | 43And He gave them strict orders that no one should know about this, and He said that something should be given her to eat. |
