They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.1Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gerasenes.
When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him.2As soon as He got out of the boat, a man with an unclean spirit came out of the tombs and met Him.
This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain.3He lived in the tombs. No one was able to restrain him anymore--even with chains--
For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him.4because he often had been bound with shackles and chains, but had snapped off the chains and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue him.
Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.5And always, night and day, he was crying out among the tombs and in the mountains and cutting himself with stones.
When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him.6When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and knelt down before Him.
He shouted at the top of his voice, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God's name don't torture me!"7And he cried out with a loud voice, "What do You have to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You before God, don't torment me!"
For Jesus had said to him, "Come out of this man, you impure spirit!"8For He had told him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!"
Then Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "My name is Legion," he replied, "for we are many."9"What is your name?" He asked him." My name is Legion," he answered Him, "because we are many."
And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.10And he kept begging Him not to send them out of the region.
A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside.11Now a large herd of pigs was there, feeding on the hillside.
The demons begged Jesus, "Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them."12The demons begged Him, "Send us to the pigs, so we may enter them."
He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.13And He gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs, and the herd of about 2,000 rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned there.
Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.14The men who tended them ran off and reported it in the town and the countryside, and people went to see what had happened.
When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.15They came to Jesus and saw the man who had been demon-possessed by the legion, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man--and told about the pigs as well.16The eyewitnesses described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and told about the pigs.
Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.17Then they began to beg Him to leave their region.
As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him.18As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed kept begging Him to be with Him.
Jesus did not let him, but said, "Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you."19But He would not let him; instead, He told him, "Go back home to your own people, and report to them how much the Lord has done for you and how He has had mercy on you."
So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.20So he went out and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and they were all amazed.
When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake.21When Jesus had crossed over again by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him while He was by the sea.
Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet.22One of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at His feet
He pleaded earnestly with him, "My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live."23and kept begging Him, "My little daughter is at death's door. Come and lay Your hands on her so she can get well and live."
So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him.24So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd was following and pressing against Him.
And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years.25A woman suffering from bleeding for 12 years
She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.26had endured much under many doctors. She had spent everything she had and was not helped at all. On the contrary, she became worse.
When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,27Having heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His robe.
because she thought, "If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed."28For she said, "If I can just touch His robes, I'll be made well!"
Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.29Instantly her flow of blood ceased, and she sensed in her body that she was cured of her affliction.
At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?"30At once Jesus realized in Himself that power had gone out from Him. He turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched My robes?"
"You see the people crowding against you," his disciples answered, "and yet you can ask, 'Who touched me?' "31His disciples said to Him, "You see the crowd pressing against You, and You say, Who touched Me?'"
But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it.32So He was looking around to see who had done this.
Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth.33Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came with fear and trembling, fell down before Him, and told Him the whole truth.
He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering."34"Daughter," He said to her, "your faith has made you well. Go in peace and be free from your affliction."
While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. "Your daughter is dead," they said. "Why bother the teacher anymore?"35While He was still speaking, people came from the synagogue leader's house and said, "Your daughter is dead. Why bother the Teacher anymore?"
Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, "Don't be afraid; just believe."36But when Jesus overheard what was said, He told the synagogue leader, "Don't be afraid. Only believe."
He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.37He did not let anyone accompany Him except Peter, James, and John, James's brother.
When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly.38They came to the leader's house, and He saw a commotion--people weeping and wailing loudly.
He went in and said to them, "Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep."39He went in and said to them, "Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep."
But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child's father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was.40They started laughing at Him, but He put them all outside. He took the child's father, mother, and those who were with Him, and entered the place where the child was.
He took her by the hand and said to her, "Talitha koum!" (which means "Little girl, I say to you, get up!").41Then He took the child by the hand and said to her, "Talitha koum!" (which is translated, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!").
Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished.42Immediately the girl got up and began to walk. (She was 12 years old.) At this they were utterly astounded.
He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.43Then He gave them strict orders that no one should know about this and said that she should be given something to eat.
