Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, | 1The Festival of Unleavened Bread, which is called Passover, was approaching. |
and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. | 2The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put him to death, because they were afraid of the people. |
Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. | 3Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, who was numbered among the Twelve. |
And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. | 4He went away and discussed with the chief priests and temple police how he could hand him over to them. |
They were delighted and agreed to give him money. | 5They were glad and agreed to give him silver. |
He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present. | 6So he accepted the offer and started looking for a good opportunity to betray him to them when the crowd was not present. |
Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. | 7Then the Day of Unleavened Bread came when the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. |
Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover." | 8Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover." |
"Where do you want us to prepare for it?" they asked. | 9"Where do you want us to prepare it?" they asked him. |
He replied, "As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, | 10"Listen," he said to them, "when you've entered the city, a man carrying a water jug will meet you. Follow him into the house he enters. |
and say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?' | 11Tell the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks you, "Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover with my disciples?"' |
He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there." | 12Then he will show you a large, furnished room upstairs. Make the preparations there." |
They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. | 13So they went and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover. |
When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. | 14When the hour came, he reclined at the table, and the apostles with him. |
And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. | 15Then he said to them, "I have fervently desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. |
For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God." | 16For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." |
After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you. | 17Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks, he said, "Take this and share it among yourselves. |
For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." | 18For I tell you, from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." |
And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." | 19And he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, gave it to them, and said, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." |
In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. | 20In the same way he also took the cup after supper and said, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. |
But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. | 21But look, the hand of the one betraying me is at the table with me. |
The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed. But woe to that man who betrays him!" | 22For the Son of Man will go away as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!" |
They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this. | 23So they began to argue among themselves which of them it could be who was going to do it. |
A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. | 24Then a dispute also arose among them about who should be considered the greatest. |
Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. | 25But he said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who have authority over them have themselves called 'Benefactors.' |
But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. | 26It is not to be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever is greatest among you should become like the youngest, and whoever leads, like the one serving. |
For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. | 27For who is greater, the one at the table or the one serving? Isn't it the one at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves. |
You are those who have stood by me in my trials. | 28You are those who stood by me in my trials. |
And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, | 29I bestow on you a kingdom, just as my Father bestowed one on me, |
so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. | 30so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom. And you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. |
"Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. | 31"Simon, Simon, look out. Satan has asked to sift you like wheat. |
But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers." | 32But I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And you, when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers." |
But he replied, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death." | 33"Lord," he told him, "I'm ready to go with you both to prison and to death." |
Jesus answered, "I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me." | 34"I tell you, Peter," he said, "the rooster will not crow today until you deny three times that you know me." |
Then Jesus asked them, "When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Nothing," they answered. | 35He also said to them, "When I sent you out without money-bag, traveling bag, or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Not a thing," they said. |
He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. | 36Then he said to them, "But now, whoever has a money-bag should take it, and also a traveling bag. And whoever doesn't have a sword should sell his robe and buy one. |
It is written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors'; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment." | 37For I tell you, what is written must be fulfilled in me: And he was counted among the lawless. Yes, what is written about me is coming to its fulfillment." |
The disciples said, "See, Lord, here are two swords." "That's enough!" he replied. | 38"Lord," they said, "look, here are two swords." "That is enough!" he told them. |
Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. | 39He went out and made his way as usual to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. |
On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation." | 40When he reached the place, he told them, "Pray that you may not fall into temptation." |
He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, | 41Then he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and began to pray, |
"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." | 42"Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me--nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done." |
An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. | 43Then an angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him. |
And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. | 44Being in anguish, he prayed more fervently, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground. |
When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. | 45When he got up from prayer and came to the disciples, he found them sleeping, exhausted from their grief. |
"Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation." | 46"Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray, so that you won't fall into temptation." |
While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, | 47While he was still speaking, suddenly a mob came, and one of the Twelve named Judas was leading them. He came near Jesus to kiss him, |
but Jesus asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" | 48but Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" |
When Jesus' followers saw what was going to happen, they said, "Lord, should we strike with our swords?" | 49When those around him saw what was going to happen, they asked, "Lord, should we strike with the sword?" |
And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. | 50Then one of them struck the high priest's servant and cut off his right ear. |
But Jesus answered, "No more of this!" And he touched the man's ear and healed him. | 51But Jesus responded, "No more of this!" And touching his ear, he healed him. |
Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? | 52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, temple police, and the elders who had come for him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a criminal? |
Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour--when darkness reigns." | 53Every day while I was with you in the temple, you never laid a hand on me. But this is your hour--and the dominion of darkness." |
Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. | 54They seized him, led him away, and brought him into the high priest's house. Meanwhile Peter was following at a distance. |
And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. | 55They lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, and Peter sat among them. |
A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was with him." | 56When a servant saw him sitting in the light, and looked closely at him, she said, "This man was with him too." |
But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said. | 57But he denied it: "Woman, I don't know him." |
A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them." "Man, I am not!" Peter replied. | 58After a little while, someone else saw him and said, "You're one of them too." "Man, I am not!" Peter said. |
About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean." | 59About an hour later, another kept insisting, "This man was certainly with him, since he's also a Galilean." |
Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. | 60But Peter said, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. |
The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times." | 61Then the Lord turned and looked at Peter. So Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, "Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times." |
And he went outside and wept bitterly. | 62And he went outside and wept bitterly. |
The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. | 63The men who were holding Jesus started mocking and beating him. |
They blindfolded him and demanded, "Prophesy! Who hit you?" | 64After blindfolding him, they kept asking, "Prophesy! Who was it that hit you?" |
And they said many other insulting things to him. | 65And they were saying many other blasphemous things to him. |
At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. | 66When daylight came, the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the scribes, convened and brought him before their Sanhedrin. |
"If you are the Messiah," they said, "tell us." Jesus answered, "If I tell you, you will not believe me, | 67They said, "If you are the Messiah, tell us." But he said to them, "If I do tell you, you will not believe. |
and if I asked you, you would not answer. | 68And if I ask you, you will not answer. |
But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God." | 69But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God." |
They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied, "You say that I am." | 70They all asked, "Are you, then, the Son of God?" And he said to them, "You say that I am." |
Then they said, "Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips." | 71"Why do we need any more testimony," they said, "since we've heard it ourselves from his mouth?" |
