So they all asked This phrase indicates a collective inquiry from the Sanhedrin, the Jewish ruling council. The Greek word for "asked" here is "ἐρωτάω" (erōtaō), which implies a formal questioning. This was not a casual question but a significant moment in the trial of Jesus. Historically, this reflects the intense scrutiny Jesus faced from religious leaders who were threatened by His teachings and authority. Are You then the Son of God? We have, then, here, in the clearest possible language: (1) A plain assertion by our Lord of his Divinity. (2) The reply of the Sanhedrists, showing that they for their part distinctly understood it as such, but to make it quite clear they asked him if that was his meaning, i.e. the assertion of his Divinity.
