The Plot to Kill Jesus 1Now the feast of unleaven'd bread, which is call'd the passover, 2being nigh, the chief priests consulted with the Scribes, how they might put Jesus to death; for they were afraid of the people. Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus 3now satan had inspired Judas surnam'd Iscariot, one of the twelve, what to do. 4accordingly he went and conferr'd with the chief priests and officers of the temple, about the method of seizing him. 5they were pleas'd with his proposal, and agreed to give him a certain sum. 6Judas accepted the bargain, and sought an opportunity to secure him, without alarming the people. Preparing the Passover 7The day of unleaven'd bread being come, when the paschal-lamb was to be sacrific'd, 8Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, go, and make provision for our eating the paschal-lamb. 9they ask'd him, where would you have us prepare it? 10he answered, when you are in the city, you will meet a man with a pitcher of water; follow him to the house, where he goes in: 11and say to the man of the house, our master sent to ask for a room, where he may eat the passover with his disciples. 12and he will show you a large upper room ready fitted: there prepare the supper. 13so they went, and having found every thing as Jesus had said, they made ready the passover. The Last Supper 14The hour of eating being come, he, and the twelve apostles sat down to table. 15and he said to them, I have ardently desired to eat this passover with you, before I suffer. 16for I declare unto you, I shall not celebrate this passover with you any more, to the time, when it shall have its accomplishment in the kingdom of the messiah. 17having then taken the cup, and given thanks, he said, take this, and distribute it to one another. 18for I tell you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine to the time when the kingdom of God shall come. 19then he took bread, and having given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to them, saying, this represents my body which is given for you: do this in remembrance of me. 20and after supper he likewise gave the cup, saying, this cup is the new testament sealed by my blood, which is shed for you. 21yet there's the hand that is to seize me, now upon the table. 22the son of man indeed must die, as it was decreed: but wo to that man by whom he is betrayed. 23upon this they began to enquire of one another, which of them it was that should do such an action. Who Is the Greatest? 24Now there had been a dispute among the disciples, which of them should be accounted the greatest. 25Jesus therefore told them, the kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and they, who are invested with their authority, take the title of benefactors. 26but you must not be such: the greatest of you must be as the junior, and he that governs as he that serves. 27for who is greatest, he that sits at table, or he that waits? is it not the person at table? yet I am among you as one that serves. 28but since you did not abandon me in my trials, 29I commit the kingdom to you, as my father committed it to me; 30that you may eat and drink at my table, in my kingdom, and seated on thrones may judge the twelve tribes of Israel. Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial 31Then said Jesus, Simon, Simon, satan has demanded to shake you, and my disciples, like wheat in a sieve. 32but as for thee, I have pray'd that you faith may not fail, do you in return establish thy brethren. 33Peter answer'd, Lord, I am ready to accompany you both to prison, and to death. 34but Jesus said, before the cock proclaims the day, you will thrice deny that ever you knew me. 35When I sent you, added Jesus, without either purse, or bag, or shoes, was you in any want? not at all, answer'd they. 36but now, said he, let him that hath a purse, and a bag, take them both; and he that has no sword, let him sell his garment to buy one. 37for take notice, that scripture, "and he was number'd among the transgressors," is yet to be accomplished in my person: and all that relates to me is going to be consummated. 38Lord, said they, you see, we have two swords, he reply'd, that's enough. Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives 39Then he went out, and retired as usual to the mountain of olives, where his disciples followed him.
at his arrival there, he said to them, pray that you may withstand the trial.
At length he withdrew from them about a stone's cast, where falling upon his knees,
he pray'd in these words, father, "O that you would divert this cup from me! nevertheless not my will, but thine be done."
then an angel from heaven appear'd to him, and comforted him.
and being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was like grumes of blood falling to the ground.
then rising from prayer, he came to his disciples, and finding them asleep, oppress'd with grief, why do you sleep?
said he, rise, and pray that you may withstand the trial. The Betrayal of Jesus 47Before he had done speaking, the company appears, Judas one of the twelve marching in front, who advanc'd to Jesus to give him a kiss.
but Jesus said to him, Judas is it thus you betray the son of man, with a kiss?
they who were about him seeing what would happen, said to him, shall we smite with the sword?
and one of them struck a servant of the high priest, and slash'd off his right ear.
but Jesus oppos'd, and said, forbear, stop there, and having touch'd his ear, he healed him.
then said Jesus to the chief priests, the officers of the temple, and the rulers, who were come to take him, are you come here with swords and staves as in pursuit of a robber?
I was daily with you in the temple, and you never offer'd to seize me: but now you have your hour, and the prince of darkness his day. Peter Denies Jesus 54Then they seized him and carried him away to the high priest's house, and Peter followed at a distance.
now as they had made a fire in the middle of the hall, and people were sitting all round it, Peter too sat down among them.
but one of the servants seeing him by the fire, star'd him in the face, and said, this man was with him too.
but he renounc'd Jesus, saying, woman, I don't know him.
a little while after another seeing him, said, you are even one of them, but Peter said to him, man, I am not.
about an hour after another confidently affirm'd, saying, this fellow was certainly with him; for he too is a Galilean.
Peter reply'd, man, I don't know what you would say, and immediately while he was yet speaking, the cock crew.
whereupon the Lord turned about, and look'd upon Peter, then Peter remembred what the Lord had said to him, "before the cock-crowing you shall deny me thrice."
and Peter went out, and wept bitterly. The Soldiers Mock Jesus 63In the mean time, they who held Jesus, treated him with insults and buffoonry.
they made him blind-fold, they slapt him on the face, and cry'd out, divine who it was that smote thee.
and besides all this, they loaded him with the most impious invectives. Jesus before the Sanhedrin 66As soon as it was day, the rulers of the people, the chief priests and the Scribes being assembled, they order'd him to be brought before their council,
and said to him, if you are the Christ, say so, but he answer'd, if I should tell you so, you will not believe it.
and if I should argue it with you, you will neither answer me, nor let me go.
but in a little time the son of man shall be seated on the powerful right hand of God.
then said they all, art thou then the son of God? you are in the right, answer'd he, for I am so.
upon this they cry'd, what occasion have we for further evidence? for we ourselves have heard enough from his own mouth. Daniel Mace New Testament (1729) Digital Text Courtesy TheWord.net Bible Software. Section Headings Courtesy Berean Bible. |
