Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet

1Now before the feast of the passover, Jesus perceiving that his hour was come, when he was to pass out of this world, and go to the father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. 2while they were at supper, (the devil having now put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him) Jesus, 3though he knew that the father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and was going to God, 4rose from supper, laid aside his garment, and took a towel to wrap about him.

5after that, he poured water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. 6then coming to Simon Peter, Peter said to him, Lord, what! would you wash my feet? 7Jesus answered him, you don't at present comprehend what I am about: but hereafter you shall. 8Peter said to him, you shall never wash my feet. Jesus answered, if I do not cleanse thee, you cannot partake with me. 9Simon Peter said to him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. 10Jesus said to him, he that comes out from bathing has occasion only to wash his feet, the rest of his body being clean: so you are clean, but not every one of you. 11for he knew who would betray him; therefore, said he, you are not every one of you clean.

12after he had washed their feet, he took his garment, and setting down again, he said to them, do you comprehend what I have been doing? 13you call me master, and lord: and you are in the right; for so I am. 14if I then, tho' lord and master, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15for I have given you example, that you might behave to one another, as I have to you. 16I declare unto you, the servant is not greater than his lord, neither he that is sent, greater than he that sent him. 17if ye comprehend these things, happy are ye if ye put them in practice.

Jesus Predicts His Betrayal

18I say not this of you all; for I know whom I have chosen: and that passage of the scripture must be fulfilled, "He that eateth bread with me, hath lift up his heel against me." 19I tell it you now before it happens, that when it is come to pass, you may believe that I am the Messias. 20I declare unto you, he that receiveth him that I send, receiveth me: and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me.

21When Jesus utter'd these words, he was troubled in spirit, and said without disguise, I assure you, that one of you shall betray me. 22then the disciples looked one on another, being in pain to know who he meant. 23now the favourite disciple of Jesus sat next to him at table. 24Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, to ask who it was he meant. 25then accordingly bending his head to Jesus's ear, he whisper'd, Lord, who is it? 26Jesus answered, he it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have made it, and when he had made the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 27and after he had taken the sop, Satan entred into him, then said Jesus to him, what you do, do quickly. 28but the company at table did not know what he meant by saying so. 29for as Judas had the purse, some of them thought, that Jesus had ordered him to buy what was necessary against the feast: or give something to the poor. 30Judas then having received the sop, immediately went out: and it was night.

Love One Another

31When he was gone, Jesus said, now is the son of man glorified, and God is glorified by him. 32as God is glorified by him, so God will glorify him in himself, and will immediately glorify him. 33my dear children, I am with you but for a little while, you shall seek me: but as I said to the Jews, so now I say to you, "where I am going you cannot come." 34a new commandment I give unto you, "that ye love one another; that you would have the same love for one another as I have had for you." 35by this mutual love shall all men know that you are my disciples.

36Simon Peter said to him, Lord, where are you going? Jesus answered him, you cannot at present follow me, where I am going; but hereafter you shall. 37Peter said to him, Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for your sake. 38Jesus answered him, you lay down your life for my sake! Verily, verily I say unto thee, the cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.
