Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: | 1Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: |
"The kingdom of heaven can be compared to a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son. | 2"The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. |
He sent his slaves to summon those who had been invited to the banquet, but they would not come. | 3He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come. |
Again he sent other slaves, saying, 'Tell those who have been invited, "Look! The feast I have prepared for you is ready. My oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet."' | 4"Then he sent some more servants and said, 'Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.' |
But they were indifferent and went away, one to his farm, another to his business. | 5"But they paid no attention and went off--one to his field, another to his business. |
The rest seized his slaves, insolently mistreated them, and killed them. | 6The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them. |
The king was furious! He sent his soldiers, and they put those murderers to death and set their city on fire. | 7The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. |
Then he said to his slaves, 'The wedding is ready, but the ones who had been invited were not worthy. | 8"Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come. |
So go into the main streets and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.' | 9So go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.' |
And those slaves went out into the streets and gathered all they found, both bad and good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests. | 10So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, the bad as well as the good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests. |
But when the king came in to see the wedding guests, he saw a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. | 11"But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. |
And he said to him, 'Friend, how did you get in here without wedding clothes?' But he had nothing to say. | 12He asked, 'How did you get in here without wedding clothes, friend?' The man was speechless. |
Then the king said to his attendants, 'Tie him up hand and foot and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth!' | 13"Then the king told the attendants, 'Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' |
For many are called, but few are chosen." | 14"For many are invited, but few are chosen." |
Then the Pharisees went out and planned together to entrap him with his own words. | 15Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. |
They sent to him their disciples along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are truthful, and teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You do not court anyone's favor because you show no partiality. | 16They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. "Teacher," they said, "we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren't swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are. |
Tell us then, what do you think? Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?" | 17Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?" |
But Jesus realized their evil intentions and said, "Hypocrites! Why are you testing me? | 18But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, "You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? |
Show me the coin used for the tax." So they brought him a denarius. | 19Show me the coin used for paying the tax." They brought him a denarius, |
Jesus said to them, "Whose image is this, and whose inscription?" | 20and he asked them, "Whose image is this? And whose inscription?" |
They replied, "Caesar's." He said to them, "Then give to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." | 21"Caesar's," they replied. Then he said to them, "So give back to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's." |
Now when they heard this they were stunned, and they left him and went away. | 22When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away. |
The same day Sadducees (who say there is no resurrection) came to him and asked him, | 23That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. |
"Teacher, Moses said, 'If a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and father children for his brother.' | 24"Teacher," they said, "Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for him. |
Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children he left his wife to his brother. | 25Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother. |
The second did the same, and the third, down to the seventh. | 26The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh. |
Last of all, the woman died. | 27Finally, the woman died. |
In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had married her." | 28Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?" |
Jesus answered them, "You are deceived, because you don't know the scriptures or the power of God. | 29Jesus replied, "You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. |
For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. | 30At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. |
Now as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, | 31But about the resurrection of the dead--have you not read what God said to you, |
I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of the dead but of the living!" | 32I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of the dead but of the living." |
When the crowds heard this, they were amazed at his teaching. | 33When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching. |
Now when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they assembled together. | 34Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. |
And one of them, an expert in religious law, asked him a question to test him: | 35One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: |
"Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?" | 36"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" |
Jesus said to him, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' | 37Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' |
This is the first and greatest commandment. | 38This is the first and greatest commandment. |
The second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' | 39And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' |
All the law and the prophets depend on these two commandments." | 40All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." |
While the Pharisees were assembled, Jesus asked them a question: | 41While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, |
"What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?" They said, "The son of David." | 42"What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?" "The son of David," they replied. |
He said to them, "How then does David by the Spirit call him 'Lord,' saying, | 43He said to them, "How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him 'Lord'? For he says, |
The Lord said to my lord, "Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet"'? | 44"'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet."' |
If David then calls him 'Lord,' how can he be his son?" | 45If then David calls him 'Lord,' how can he be his son?" |
No one was able to answer him a word, and from that day on no one dared to question him any longer. | 46No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions. |
