| 1But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. | 1But very early on Sunday morning the women went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. |
| 2And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, | 2They found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. |
| 3but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. | 3So they went in, but they didn’t find the body of the Lord Jesus. |
| 4While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men suddenly stood near them in dazzling clothing; | 4As they stood there puzzled, two men suddenly appeared to them, clothed in dazzling robes. |
| 5and as the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, "Why do you seek the living One among the dead? | 5The women were terrified and bowed with their faces to the ground. Then the men asked, “Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is alive? |
| 6"He is not here, but He has risen. Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee, | 6He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead! Remember what he told you back in Galilee, |
| 7saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again." | 7that the Son of Man must be betrayed into the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and that he would rise again on the third day.” |
| 8And they remembered His words, | 8Then they remembered that he had said this. |
| 9and returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. | 9So they rushed back from the tomb to tell his eleven disciples—and everyone else—what had happened. |
| 10Now they were Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James; also the other women with them were telling these things to the apostles. | 10It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and several other women who told the apostles what had happened. |
| 11But these words appeared to them as nonsense, and they would not believe them. | 11But the story sounded like nonsense to the men, so they didn’t believe it. |
| 12But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings only; and he went away to his home, marveling at what had happened. | 12However, Peter jumped up and ran to the tomb to look. Stooping, he peered in and saw the empty linen wrappings; then he went home again, wondering what had happened. The Walk to Emmaus |
| 13And behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem. | 13That same day two of Jesus’ followers were walking to the village of Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem. |
| 14And they were talking with each other about all these things which had taken place. | 14As they walked along they were talking about everything that had happened. |
| 15While they were talking and discussing, Jesus Himself approached and began traveling with them. | 15As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself suddenly came and began walking with them. |
| 16But their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him. | 16But God kept them from recognizing him. |
| 17And He said to them, "What are these words that you are exchanging with one another as you are walking?" And they stood still, looking sad. | 17He asked them, “What are you discussing so intently as you walk along?” They stopped short, sadness written across their faces. |
| 18One of them, named Cleopas, answered and said to Him, "Are You the only one visiting Jerusalem and unaware of the things which have happened here in these days?" | 18Then one of them, Cleopas, replied, “You must be the only person in Jerusalem who hasn’t heard about all the things that have happened there the last few days.” |
| 19And He said to them, "What things?" And they said to Him, "The things about Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people, | 19 “What things?” Jesus asked. “The things that happened to Jesus, the man from Nazareth,” they said. “He was a prophet who did powerful miracles, and he was a mighty teacher in the eyes of God and all the people. |
| 20and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to the sentence of death, and crucified Him. | 20But our leading priests and other religious leaders handed him over to be condemned to death, and they crucified him. |
| 21"But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, it is the third day since these things happened. | 21We had hoped he was the Messiah who had come to rescue Israel. This all happened three days ago. |
| 22"But also some women among us amazed us. When they were at the tomb early in the morning, | 22“Then some women from our group of his followers were at his tomb early this morning, and they came back with an amazing report. |
| 23and did not find His body, they came, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said that He was alive. | 23They said his body was missing, and they had seen angels who told them Jesus is alive! |
| 24"Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just exactly as the women also had said; but Him they did not see." | 24Some of our men ran out to see, and sure enough, his body was gone, just as the women had said.” |
| 25And He said to them, "O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! | 25Then Jesus said to them, “You foolish people! You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures. |
| 26"Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?" | 26 Wasn’t it clearly predicted that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before entering his glory?” |
| 27Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures. | 27Then Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. |
| 28And they approached the village where they were going, and He acted as though He were going farther. | 28By this time they were nearing Emmaus and the end of their journey. Jesus acted as if he were going on, |
| 29But they urged Him, saying, "Stay with us, for it is getting toward evening, and the day is now nearly over." So He went in to stay with them. | 29but they begged him, “Stay the night with us, since it is getting late.” So he went home with them. |
| 30When He had reclined at the table with them, He took the bread and blessed it, and breaking it, He began giving it to them. | 30As they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them. |
| 31Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight. | 31Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And at that moment he disappeared! |
| 32They said to one another, "Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He was explaining the Scriptures to us?" | 32They said to each other, “Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?” |
| 33And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found gathered together the eleven and those who were with them, | 33And within the hour they were on their way back to Jerusalem. There they found the eleven disciples and the others who had gathered with them, |
| 34saying, "The Lord has really risen and has appeared to Simon." | 34who said, “The Lord has really risen! He appeared to Peter. ” Jesus Appears to the Disciples |
| 35They began to relate their experiences on the road and how He was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread. | 35Then the two from Emmaus told their story of how Jesus had appeared to them as they were walking along the road, and how they had recognized him as he was breaking the bread. |
| 36While they were telling these things, He Himself stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be to you." | 36And just as they were telling about it, Jesus himself was suddenly standing there among them. “Peace be with you,” he said. |
| 37But they were startled and frightened and thought that they were seeing a spirit. | 37But the whole group was startled and frightened, thinking they were seeing a ghost! |
| 38And He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? | 38 “Why are you frightened?” he asked. “Why are your hearts filled with doubt? |
| 39"See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have." | 39 Look at my hands. Look at my feet. You can see that it’s really me. Touch me and make sure that I am not a ghost, because ghosts don’t have bodies, as you see that I do.” |
| 40And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. | 40As he spoke, he showed them his hands and his feet. |
| 41While they still could not believe it because of their joy and amazement, He said to them, "Have you anything here to eat?" | 41Still they stood there in disbelief, filled with joy and wonder. Then he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” |
| 42They gave Him a piece of a broiled fish; | 42They gave him a piece of broiled fish, |
| 43and He took it and ate it before them. | 43and he ate it as they watched. |
| 44Now He said to them, "These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled." | 44Then he said, “When I was with you before, I told you that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms must be fulfilled.” |
| 45Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, | 45Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. |
| 46and He said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, | 46And he said, “Yes, it was written long ago that the Messiah would suffer and die and rise from the dead on the third day. |
| 47and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. | 47 It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’ |
| 48"You are witnesses of these things. | 48 You are witnesses of all these things. |
| 49"And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high." | 49 “And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.” The Ascension |
| 50And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. | 50Then Jesus led them to Bethany, and lifting his hands to heaven, he blessed them. |
| 51While He was blessing them, He parted from them and was carried up into heaven. | 51While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up to heaven. |
| 52And they, after worshiping Him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy, | 52So they worshiped him and then returned to Jerusalem filled with great joy. |
| 53and were continually in the temple praising God. | 53And they spent all of their time in the Temple, praising God. |
