When Jesus had finished all these words, He said to His disciples, | 1When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he told his disciples, |
"You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man is to be handed over for crucifixion." | 2"You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified." |
Then the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together in the court of the high priest, named Caiaphas; | 3Then the chief priests and the elders of the people met together in the palace of the high priest, who was named Caiaphas. |
and they plotted together to seize Jesus by stealth and kill Him. | 4They planned to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him. |
But they were saying, "Not during the festival, otherwise a riot might occur among the people." | 5But they said, "Not during the feast, so that there won't be a riot among the people." |
Now when Jesus was in Bethany, at the home of Simon the leper, | 6Now while Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, |
a woman came to Him with an alabaster vial of very costly perfume, and she poured it on His head as He reclined at the table. | 7a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of expensive perfumed oil, and she poured it on his head as he was at the table. |
But the disciples were indignant when they saw this, and said, "Why this waste? | 8When the disciples saw this, they became indignant and said, "Why this waste? |
"For this perfume might have been sold for a high price and the money given to the poor." | 9It could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor!" |
But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, "Why do you bother the woman? For she has done a good deed to Me. | 10When Jesus learned of this, he said to them, "Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a good service for me. |
"For you always have the poor with you; but you do not always have Me. | 11For you will always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me! |
"For when she poured this perfume on My body, she did it to prepare Me for burial. | 12When she poured this oil on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. |
"Truly I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her." | 13I tell you the truth, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her." |
Then one of the twelve, named Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests | 14Then one of the twelve, the one named Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests |
and said, "What are you willing to give me to betray Him to you?" And they weighed out thirty pieces of silver to him. | 15and said, "What will you give me to betray him into your hands?" So they set out thirty silver coins for him. |
From then on he began looking for a good opportunity to betray Jesus. | 16From that time on, Judas began looking for an opportunity to betray him. |
Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?" | 17Now on the first day of the feast of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and said, "Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?" |
And He said, "Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, 'The Teacher says, "My time is near; I am to keep the Passover at your house with My disciples."'" | 18He said, "Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, 'The Teacher says, "My time is near. I will observe the Passover with my disciples at your house."'" |
The disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover. | 19So the disciples did as Jesus had instructed them, and they prepared the Passover. |
Now when evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the twelve disciples. | 20When it was evening, he took his place at the table with the twelve. |
As they were eating, He said, "Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me." | 21And while they were eating he said, "I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me." |
Being deeply grieved, they each one began to say to Him, "Surely not I, Lord?" | 22They became greatly distressed and each one began to say to him, "Surely not I, Lord?" |
And He answered, "He who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray Me. | 23He answered, "The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. |
"The Son of Man is to go, just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born." | 24The Son of Man will go as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for him if he had never been born." |
And Judas, who was betraying Him, said, "Surely it is not I, Rabbi?" Jesus said to him, "You have said it yourself." | 25Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, "Surely not I, Rabbi?" Jesus replied, "You have said it yourself." |
While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, "Take, eat; this is My body." | 26While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after giving thanks he broke it, gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat, this is my body." |
And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you; | 27And after taking the cup and giving thanks, he gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you, |
for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins. | 28for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, that is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. |
"But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom." | 29I tell you, from now on I will not drink of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom." |
After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. | 30After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. |
Then Jesus said to them, "You will all fall away because of Me this night, for it is written, 'I WILL STRIKE DOWN THE SHEPHERD, AND THE SHEEP OF THE FLOCK SHALL BE SCATTERED.' | 31Then Jesus said to them, "This night you will all fall away because of me, for it is written: 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.' |
"But after I have been raised, I will go ahead of you to Galilee." | 32But after I am raised, I will go ahead of you into Galilee." |
But Peter said to Him, "Even though all may fall away because of You, I will never fall away." | 33Peter said to him, "If they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away!" |
Jesus said to him, "Truly I say to you that this very night, before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times." | 34Jesus said to him, "I tell you the truth, on this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times." |
Peter said to Him, "Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You." All the disciples said the same thing too. | 35Peter said to him, "Even if I must die with you, I will never deny you." And all the disciples said the same thing. |
Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to His disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." | 36Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to the disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." |
And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and distressed. | 37He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and became anguished and distressed. |
Then He said to them, "My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and keep watch with Me." | 38Then he said to them, "My soul is deeply grieved, even to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake with me." |
And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will." | 39Going a little farther, he threw himself down with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if possible, let this cup pass from me! Yet not what I will, but what you will." |
And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "So, you men could not keep watch with Me for one hour? | 40Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, "So, couldn't you stay awake with me for one hour? |
"Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." | 41Stay awake and pray that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." |
He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, "My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, Your will be done." | 42He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if this cup cannot be taken away unless I drink it, your will must be done." |
Again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. | 43He came again and found them sleeping; they could not keep their eyes open. |
And He left them again, and went away and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more. | 44So leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same thing once more. |
Then He came to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. | 45Then he came to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is approaching, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. |
"Get up, let us be going; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!" | 46Get up, let us go. Look! My betrayer is approaching!" |
While He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, came up accompanied by a large crowd with swords and clubs, who came from the chief priests and elders of the people. | 47While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and elders of the people. |
Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign, saying, "Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him." | 48(Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, "The one I kiss is the man. Arrest him!") |
Immediately Judas went to Jesus and said, "Hail, Rabbi!" and kissed Him. | 49Immediately he went up to Jesus and said, "Greetings, Rabbi," and kissed him. |
And Jesus said to him, "Friend, do what you have come for." Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him. | 50Jesus said to him, "Friend, do what you are here to do." Then they came and took hold of Jesus and arrested him. |
And behold, one of those who were with Jesus reached and drew out his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear. | 51But one of those with Jesus grabbed his sword, drew it out, and struck the high priest's slave, cutting off his ear. |
Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back into its place; for all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword. | 52Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back in its place! For all who take hold of the sword will die by the sword. |
"Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels? | 53Or do you think that I cannot call on my Father, and that he would send me more than twelve legions of angels right now? |
"How then will the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?" | 54How then would the scriptures that say it must happen this way be fulfilled?" |
At that time Jesus said to the crowds, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? Every day I used to sit in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me. | 55At that moment Jesus said to the crowd, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me like you would an outlaw? Day after day I sat teaching in the temple courts, yet you did not arrest me. |
"But all this has taken place to fulfill the Scriptures of the prophets." Then all the disciples left Him and fled. | 56But this has happened so that the scriptures of the prophets would be fulfilled." Then all the disciples left him and fled. |
Those who had seized Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together. | 57Now the ones who had arrested Jesus led him to Caiaphas, the high priest, in whose house the experts in the law and the elders had gathered. |
But Peter was following Him at a distance as far as the courtyard of the high priest, and entered in, and sat down with the officers to see the outcome. | 58But Peter was following him from a distance, all the way to the high priest's courtyard. After going in, he sat with the guards to see the outcome. |
Now the chief priests and the whole Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death. | 59The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were trying to find false testimony against Jesus so that they could put him to death. |
They did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on two came forward, | 60But they did not find anything, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward |
and said, "This man stated, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and to rebuild it in three days.'" | 61and declared, "This man said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.'" |
The high priest stood up and said to Him, "Do You not answer? What is it that these men are testifying against You?" | 62So the high priest stood up and said to him, "Have you no answer? What is this that they are testifying against you?" |
But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest said to Him, "I adjure You by the living God, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God." | 63But Jesus was silent. The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God." |
Jesus said to him, "You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter you will see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN." | 64Jesus said to him, "You have said it yourself. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven." |
Then the high priest tore his robes and said, "He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy; | 65Then the high priest tore his clothes and declared, "He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? Now you have heard the blasphemy! |
what do you think?" They answered, "He deserves death!" | 66What is your verdict?" They answered, "He is guilty and deserves death." |
Then they spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others slapped Him, | 67Then they spat in his face and struck him with their fists. And some slapped him, |
and said, "Prophesy to us, You Christ; who is the one who hit You?" | 68saying, "Prophesy for us, you Christ! Who hit you?" |
Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came to him and said, "You too were with Jesus the Galilean." | 69Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A slave girl came to him and said, "You also were with Jesus the Galilean." |
But he denied it before them all, saying, "I do not know what you are talking about." | 70But he denied it in front of them all: "I don't know what you're talking about!" |
When he had gone out to the gateway, another servant-girl saw him and said to those who were there, "This man was with Jesus of Nazareth." | 71When he went out to the gateway, another slave girl saw him and said to the people there, "This man was with Jesus the Nazarene." |
And again he denied it with an oath, "I do not know the man." | 72He denied it again with an oath, "I do not know the man!" |
A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, "Surely you too are one of them; for even the way you talk gives you away." | 73After a little while, those standing there came up to Peter and said, "You really are one of them too--even your accent gives you away!" |
Then he began to curse and swear, "I do not know the man!" And immediately a rooster crowed. | 74At that he began to curse, and he swore with an oath, "I do not know the man!" At that moment a rooster crowed. |
And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, "Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times." And he went out and wept bitterly. | 75Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said: "Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly. |
