1After this, Jesus traveled in Galilee, since He did not want to travel in Judea because the Jews were trying to kill Him.

1After these things Jesus was walking in Galilee, for He was unwilling to walk in Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill Him.

2The Jewish Festival of Tabernacles was near,

2Now the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Booths, was near.

3so His brothers said to Him, "Leave here and go to Judea so Your disciples can see Your works that You are doing.

3Therefore His brothers said to Him, "Leave here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples also may see Your works which You are doing.

4For no one does anything in secret while he's seeking public recognition. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world."

6Jesus told them, "My time has not yet arrived, but your time is always at hand.

7The world cannot hate you, but it does hate Me because I testify about it--that its deeds are evil.

8Go up to the festival yourselves. I'm not going up to the festival yet, because My time has not yet fully come."

9After He had said these things, He stayed in Galilee.

10After His brothers had gone up to the festival, then He also went up, not openly but secretly.

11The Jews were looking for Him at the festival and saying, "Where is He?"

12And there was a lot of discussion about Him among the crowds. Some were saying, "He's a good man." Others were saying, "No, on the contrary, He's deceiving the people."

12There was much grumbling among the crowds concerning Him; some were saying, "He is a good man"; others were saying, "No, on the contrary, He leads the people astray."

13Still, nobody was talking publicly about Him because they feared the Jews.

13Yet no one was speaking openly of Him for fear of the Jews.

14When the festival was already half over, Jesus went up into the temple complex and began to teach.

14But when it was now the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and began to teach.

15Then the Jews were amazed and said, "How does He know the Scriptures, since He hasn't been trained?"

15The Jews then were astonished, saying, "How has this man become learned, having never been educated?"

16Jesus answered them, "My teaching isn't Mine but is from the One who sent Me.

16So Jesus answered them and said, "My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me.

17If anyone wants to do His will, he will understand whether the teaching is from God or if I am speaking on My own.

17"If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself.

18The one who speaks for himself seeks his own glory. But He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

18"He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

19Didn't Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law! Why do you want to kill Me?""

19"Did not Moses give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why do you seek to kill Me?"

20You have a demon!" the crowd responded. "Who wants to kill You?"

20The crowd answered, "You have a demon! Who seeks to kill You?"

21"I did one work, and you are all amazed," Jesus answered.

21Jesus answered them, "I did one deed, and you all marvel.

22"Consider this: Moses has given you circumcision--not that it comes from Moses but from the fathers--and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.

22"For this reason Moses has given you circumcision (not because it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man.

23If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses won't be broken, are you angry at Me because I made a man entirely well on the Sabbath?

23"If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses will not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made an entire man well on the Sabbath?

24Stop judging according to outward appearances; rather judge according to righteous judgment."

24"Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment."

25Some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, "Isn't this the man they want to kill?

25So some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, "Is this not the man whom they are seeking to kill?

26Yet, look! He's speaking publicly and they're saying nothing to Him. Can it be true that the authorities know He is the Messiah?

26"Look, He is speaking publicly, and they are saying nothing to Him. The rulers do not really know that this is the Christ, do they?

27But we know where this man is from. When the Messiah comes, nobody will know where He is from."

27"However, we know where this man is from; but whenever the Christ may come, no one knows where He is from."

28As He was teaching in the temple complex, Jesus cried out, "You know Me and you know where I am from. Yet I have not come on My own, but the One who sent Me is true. You don't know Him;

28Then Jesus cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, "You both know Me and know where I am from; and I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know.

29I know Him because I am from Him, and He sent Me."

30Then they tried to seize Him. Yet no one laid a hand on Him because His hour had not yet come.

30So they were seeking to seize Him; and no man laid his hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.

31However, many from the crowd believed in Him and said, "When the Messiah comes, He won't perform more signs than this man has done, will He?"

31But many of the crowd believed in Him; and they were saying, "When the Christ comes, He will not perform more signs than those which this man has, will He?"

32The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about Him, so the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple police to arrest Him.

33Then Jesus said, "I am only with you for a short time. Then I'm going to the One who sent Me.

33Therefore Jesus said, "For a little while longer I am with you, then I go to Him who sent Me.

34You will look for Me, but you will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come."

34"You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come."

35Then the Jews said to one another, "Where does He intend to go so we won't find Him? He doesn't intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, does He?

35The Jews then said to one another, "Where does this man intend to go that we will not find Him? He is not intending to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks, is He?

36What is this remark He made: 'You will look for Me, and you will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come?"

36"What is this statement that He said, 'You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come '?"

37On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and cried out, "If anyone is thirsty, he should come to Me and drink!

37Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.

38The one who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, will have streams of living water flow from deep within him."

38"He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, 'From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.'"

39He said this about the Spirit. Those who believed in Jesus were going to receive the Spirit, for the Spirit had not yet been received because Jesus had not yet been glorified.

39But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

40When some from the crowd heard these words, they said, "This really is the Prophet!"

40Some of the people therefore, when they heard these words, were saying, "This certainly is the Prophet."

41Others said, "This is the Messiah!" But some said, "Surely the Messiah doesn't come from Galilee, does He?

41Others were saying, "This is the Christ." Still others were saying, "Surely the Christ is not going to come from Galilee, is He?

42Doesn't the Scripture say that the Messiah comes from David's offspring and from the town of Bethlehem, where David once lived?"

42"Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?"

43So a division occurred among the crowd because of Him.

45Then the temple police came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why haven't you brought Him?"

46The police answered, "No man ever spoke like this!"

47Then the Pharisees responded to them: "Are you fooled too?

48Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in Him?

48"No one of the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he?

49But this crowd, which doesn't know the law, is accursed!"

49"But this crowd which does not know the Law is accursed."

50Nicodemus--the one who came to Him previously, being one of them--said to them, "

50Nicodemus (he who came to Him before, being one of them) said to them,

51Our law doesn't judge a man before it hears from him and knows what he's doing, does it?""

51"Our Law does not judge a man unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?"

52You aren't from Galilee too, are you?" they replied. "Investigate and you will see that no prophet arises from Galilee."

52They answered him, "You are not also from Galilee, are you? Search, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee."

53So each one went to his house.
