But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. | 1But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. |
At dawn He went to the temple complex again, and all the people were coming to Him. He sat down and began to teach them. | 2Early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people were coming to Him; and He sat down and began to teach them. |
Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery, making her stand in the center. " | 3The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery, and having set her in the center of the court, |
Teacher," they said to Him, "this woman was caught in the act of committing adultery. | 4they said to Him, "Teacher, this woman has been caught in adultery, in the very act. |
In the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do You say?" | 5"Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?" |
They asked this to trap Him, in order that they might have evidence to accuse Him. Jesus stooped down and started writing on the ground with His finger. | 6They were saying this, testing Him, so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground. |
When they persisted in questioning Him, He stood up and said to them, "The one without sin among you should be the first to throw a stone at her." | 7But when they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up, and said to them, "He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." |
Then He stooped down again and continued writing on the ground. | 8Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. |
When they heard this, they left one by one, starting with the older men. Only He was left, with the woman in the center. | 9When they heard it, they began to go out one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the center of the court. |
When Jesus stood up, He said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"" | 10Straightening up, Jesus said to her, "Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?" |
No one, Lord," she answered. "Neither do I condemn you," said Jesus. "Go, and from now on do not sin anymore." | 11She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said, "I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on sin no more." |
Then Jesus spoke to them again: "I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows Me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life." | 12Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, "I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life." |
So the Pharisees said to Him, "You are testifying about Yourself. Your testimony is not valid." | 13So the Pharisees said to Him, "You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not true." |
"Even if I testify about Myself," Jesus replied, "My testimony is valid, because I know where I came from and where I'm going. But you don't know where I come from or where I'm going. | 14Jesus answered and said to them, "Even if I testify about Myself, My testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. |
You judge by human standards. I judge no one. | 15"You judge according to the flesh; I am not judging anyone. |
And if I do judge, My judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent Me judge together. | 16"But even if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent Me. |
Even in your law it is written that the witness of two men is valid. | 17"Even in your law it has been written that the testimony of two men is true. |
I am the One who testifies about Myself, and the Father who sent Me testifies about Me." | 18"I am He who testifies about Myself, and the Father who sent Me testifies about Me." |
Then they asked Him, "Where is Your Father?" "You know neither Me nor My Father," Jesus answered. "If you knew Me, you would also know My Father." | 19So they were saying to Him, "Where is Your Father?" Jesus answered, "You know neither Me nor My Father; if you knew Me, you would know My Father also." |
He spoke these words by the treasury, while teaching in the temple complex. But no one seized Him, because His hour had not come. | 20These words He spoke in the treasury, as He taught in the temple; and no one seized Him, because His hour had not yet come. |
Then He said to them again, "I'm going away; you will look for Me, and you will die in your sin. Where I'm going, you cannot come." | 21Then He said again to them, "I go away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come." |
So the Jews said again, "He won't kill Himself, will He, since He says, Where I'm going, you cannot come?" | 22So the Jews were saying, "Surely He will not kill Himself, will He, since He says, 'Where I am going, you cannot come '?" |
"You are from below," He told them, "I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. | 23And He was saying to them, "You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world. |
Therefore I told you that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins."" | 24"Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins." |
Who are You?" they questioned. "Precisely what I've been telling you from the very beginning," Jesus told them. | 25So they were saying to Him, "Who are You?" Jesus said to them, "What have I been saying to you from the beginning? |
"I have many things to say and to judge about you, but the One who sent Me is true, and what I have heard from Him--these things I tell the world." | 26"I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is true; and the things which I heard from Him, these I speak to the world." |
They did not know He was speaking to them about the Father. | 27They did not realize that He had been speaking to them about the Father. |
So Jesus said to them, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing on My own. But just as the Father taught Me, I say these things. | 28So Jesus said, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me. |
The One who sent Me is with Me. He has not left Me alone, because I always do what pleases Him." | 29"And He who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him." |
As He was saying these things, many believed in Him. | 30As He spoke these things, many came to believe in Him. |
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed Him, "If you continue in My word, you really are My disciples. | 31So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, "If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; |
You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."" | 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." |
We are descendants of Abraham," they answered Him, "and we have never been enslaved to anyone. How can You say, You will become free?" | 33They answered Him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, 'You will become free '?" |
Jesus responded, "I assure you: Everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. | 34Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. |
A slave does not remain in the household forever, but a son does remain forever. | 35"The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever. |
Therefore, if the Son sets you free, you really will be free. | 36"So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. |
I know you are descendants of Abraham, but you are trying to kill Me because My word is not welcome among you. | 37"I know that you are Abraham's descendants; yet you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you. |
I speak what I have seen in the presence of the Father; therefore, you do what you have heard from your father."" | 38"I speak the things which I have seen with My Father; therefore you also do the things which you heard from your father." |
Our father is Abraham!" they replied. "If you were Abraham's children," Jesus told them, "you would do what Abraham did. | 39They answered and said to Him, "Abraham is our father." Jesus said to them, "If you are Abraham's children, do the deeds of Abraham. |
But now you are trying to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do this! | 40"But as it is, you are seeking to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do. |
You're doing what your father does."" We weren't born of sexual immorality," they said. "We have one Father--God." | 41"You are doing the deeds of your father." They said to Him, "We were not born of fornication; we have one Father: God." |
Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love Me, because I came from God and I am here. For I didn't come on My own, but He sent Me. | 42Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have not even come on My own initiative, but He sent Me. |
Why don't you understand what I say? Because you cannot listen to My word. | 43"Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot hear My word. |
You are of your father the Devil, and you want to carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of liars. | 44"You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies. |
Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me. | 45"But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me. |
Who among you can convict Me of sin? If I tell the truth, why don't you believe Me? | 46"Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If I speak truth, why do you not believe Me? |
The one who is from God listens to God's words. This is why you don't listen, because you are not from God." | 47"He who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God." |
The Jews responded to Him, "Aren't we right in saying that You're a Samaritan and have a demon?" | 48The Jews answered and said to Him, "Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?" |
"I do not have a demon," Jesus answered. "On the contrary, I honor My Father and you dishonor Me. | 49Jesus answered, "I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. |
I do not seek My glory; the One who seeks it also judges. | 50"But I do not seek My glory; there is One who seeks and judges. |
I assure you: If anyone keeps My word, he will never see death--ever!" | 51"Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he will never see death." |
Then the Jews said, "Now we know You have a demon. Abraham died and so did the prophets. You say, If anyone keeps My word, he will never taste death--ever!' | 52The Jews said to Him, "Now we know that You have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets also; and You say, 'If anyone keeps My word, he will never taste of death.' |
Are You greater than our father Abraham who died? Even the prophets died. Who do You pretend to be?" | 53"Surely You are not greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets died too; whom do You make Yourself out to be?" |
"If I glorify Myself," Jesus answered, "My glory is nothing. My Father--you say about Him, He is our God--He is the One who glorifies Me. | 54Jesus answered, "If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, 'He is our God'; |
You've never known Him, but I know Him. If I were to say I don't know Him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know Him, and I keep His word. | 55and you have not come to know Him, but I know Him; and if I say that I do not know Him, I will be a liar like you, but I do know Him and keep His word. |
Your father Abraham was overjoyed that he would see My day; he saw it and rejoiced." | 56"Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad." |
The Jews replied, "You aren't 50 years old yet, and You've seen Abraham?" | 57So the Jews said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?" |
Jesus said to them, "I assure you: Before Abraham was, I am." | 58Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am." |
At that, they picked up stones to throw at Him. But Jesus was hidden and went out of the temple complex. | 59Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple. |
