On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared.1On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared.
They found the stone rolled away from the tomb,2They found the stone rolled away from the tomb.
but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.3They went in but did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
While they were puzzling over this, suddenly two men in radiant apparel stood beside them.4While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood by them in dazzling clothes.
As the women bowed their faces to the ground in terror, the two men asked them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?5So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground." Why are you looking for the living among the dead?" asked the men. "
He is not here; He has risen! Remember how He told you while He was still in Galilee:6He is not here, but He has been resurrected! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee,
‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.’ ”7saying, The Son of Man must be betrayed into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day?"
Then they remembered His words.8And they remembered His words.
And when they returned from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven and to all the others.9Returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven and to all the rest.
It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told this to the apostles.10Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them were telling the apostles these things.
But their words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe the women.11But these words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe the women.
Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. And after bending down and seeing only the linen cloths, he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.12Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. When he stooped to look in, he saw only the linen cloths. So he went home, amazed at what had happened.
That same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem.13Now that same day two of them were on their way to a village called Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem.
They were talking with each other about everything that had happened.14Together they were discussing everything that had taken place.
And as they talked and deliberated, Jesus Himself came up and walked along with them.15And while they were discussing and arguing, Jesus Himself came near and began to walk along with them.
But their eyes were kept from recognizing Him.16But they were prevented from recognizing Him.
He asked them, “What are you discussing so intently as you walk along?” They stood still, with sadness on their faces.17Then He asked them, "What is this dispute that you're having with each other as you are walking?" And they stopped walking and looked discouraged.
One of them, named Cleopas, asked Him, “Are You the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in recent days?”18The one named Cleopas answered Him, "Are You the only visitor in Jerusalem who doesn't know the things that happened there in these days?"
“What things?” He asked. “The events involving Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered. “This man was a prophet, powerful in speech and action before God and all the people.19"What things?" He asked them. So they said to Him, "The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a Prophet powerful in action and speech before God and all the people,
Our chief priests and rulers delivered Him up to the sentence of death, and they crucified Him.20and how our chief priests and leaders handed Him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified Him.
But we were hoping He was the One who would redeem Israel. And besides all this, it is the third day since these things took place.21But we were hoping that He was the One who was about to redeem Israel. Besides all this, it's the third day since these things happened.
Furthermore, some of our women astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning,22Moreover, some women from our group astounded us. They arrived early at the tomb,
but they did not find His body. They came and told us they had seen a vision of angels, who said that Jesus was alive.23and when they didn't find His body, they came and reported that they had seen a vision of angels who said He was alive.
Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had described. But Him they did not see.”24Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they didn't see Him."
Then Jesus said to them, “O foolish ones, how slow are your hearts to believe all that the prophets have spoken!25He said to them, "How unwise and slow you are to believe in your hearts all that the prophets have spoken!
Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and then to enter His glory?”26Didn't the Messiah have to suffer these things and enter into His glory?"
And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was written in all the Scriptures about Himself.27Then beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He interpreted for them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.
As they approached the village where they were headed, He seemed to be going farther.28They came near the village where they were going, and He gave the impression that He was going farther.
But they pleaded with Him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So He went in to stay with them.29But they urged Him: "Stay with us, because it's almost evening, and now the day is almost over." So He went in to stay with them.
While He was reclining at the table with them, He took bread, spoke a blessing and broke it, and gave it to them.30It was as He reclined at the table with them that He took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.
Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Jesus—and He disappeared from their sight.31Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him, but He disappeared from their sight.
They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us as He spoke with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”32So they said to each other, "Weren't our hearts ablaze within us while He was talking with us on the road and explaining the Scriptures to us?"
And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, gathered together33That very hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem. They found the Eleven and those with them gathered together,
and saying, “The Lord has indeed risen and has appeared to Simon!”34who said, "The Lord has certainly been raised, and has appeared to Simon!"
Then the two told what had happened on the road, and how they had recognized Jesus in the breaking of the bread.35Then they began to describe what had happened on the road and how He was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
While they were describing these events, Jesus Himself stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”36And as they were saying these things, He Himself stood among them. He said to them, "Peace to you!"
But they were startled and frightened, thinking they had seen a spirit.37But they were startled and terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost.
“Why are you troubled,” Jesus asked, “and why do doubts arise in your hearts?38"Why are you troubled?" He asked them. "And why do doubts arise in your hearts?
Look at My hands and My feet. It is I Myself. Touch Me and see—for a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”39Look at My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself! Touch Me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have."
And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and feet.40Having said this, He showed them His hands and feet.
While they were still in disbelief because of their joy and amazement, He asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”41But while they still were amazed and unbelieving because of their joy, He asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?"
So they gave Him a piece of broiled fish,42So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish,
and He took it and ate it in front of them.43and He took it and ate in their presence.
Jesus said to them, “These are the words I spoke to you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms.”44Then He told them, "These are My words that I spoke to you while I was still with you--that everything written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled."
Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.45Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.
And He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,46He also said to them, "This is what is written: The Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead the third day,
and in His name repentance and forgiveness of sins will be proclaimed to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem.47and repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
You are witnesses of these things.48You are witnesses of these things.
And behold, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you. But remain in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”49And look, I am sending you what My Father promised. As for you, stay in the city until you are empowered from on high."
When Jesus had led them out as far as Bethany, He lifted up His hands and blessed them.50Then He led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up His hands He blessed them.
While He was blessing them, He left them and was carried up into heaven.51And while He was blessing them, He left them and was carried up into heaven.
And they worshiped Him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,52After worshiping Him, they returned to Jerusalem with great joy.
praising God continually in the temple.53And they were continually in the temple complex praising God.
