1And a certain man was ailing, Lazarus from Bethany, from out of the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2And it was Mary, the one having anointed (aleipsasa-anoint but different from chrio for anoint) the Lord with ointment (myro-an ointment made of olive oil and other spices) and having wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 3The sisters therefore sent to Him, saying, Lord, Behold, He whom You love (phileis) is sick. 4And Jesus having heard, said, This sickness is not to death, but for the sake of the glory of God, so that the Son of God might be glorified through it. 5Now Jesus loved (egapa) Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. 6When therefore He heard that he is sick, then He stayed two days in the place in which He was. 7Then after this, He says to the disciples, Let us go into Judea again. 8The disciples say to Him, Rabbi, just now the Jews were seeking to stone You and again You are going there? 9Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world; 10However if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him. 11He said these things; and after this, He says to them, Lazarus our friend has fallen asleep; but I go so that I might awaken (awaken out of sleep, unique word used once, not the same as resurrect) him. 12Then His disciples said, Lord, if he has fallen asleep he will get well (be saved). 13However Jesus had spoken concerning his death; however they supposed that He speaks concerning the resting of sleep. 14Then therefore Jesus said to them openly, Lazarus has died. 15And I rejoice on account of you that I was not there, so that you might believe. But let us go to him. 16Thomas therefore, called Didymus (Greek name equal to Thomas) to the fellow disciples, said, Let us also go, so that we might die with him.

17Jesus therefore having come found him, already four days having been in the tomb. 18And Bethany was near Jerusalem about fifteen stadia (two miles, stadia-one eighth of a Roman mile) away, 19And many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, so that they might console (paramytheomai- soothing speaking from close beside) them concerning their brother. 20Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus is coming, met Him; however Mary was sitting in the house. 21Martha then said to Jesus, Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. 22But even now I know that whatever You might ask God, God will give You. 23Jesus says to her, Your brother will rise again (stand up/again). 24Martha says to Him, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection in the last day. 25Jesus said to her, I am the Resurrection and the Life; the one believing unto Me, even if he should die, he will live; 26And everyone living and believing unto Me shall never die unto the age. Do you believe this? 27She says to Him, Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, the One coming into the world.

28And having said these things, she went away and called out to Mary, her sister, secretly, having said, The Teacher is near and calls you. 29And she when she heard, rises up quickly and comes to Him.

30Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met Him. 31Then the Jews being with her in the house and consoling her, having seen Mary that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, having supposed she is going unto the tomb, so that she might weep there. 32Therefore Mary, when she came where Jesus was, having seen Him, fell to his feet, saying to Him, Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. 33Jesus therefore when He saw her weeping and the Jews having come with her weeping, He was deeply moved (groaned, snort with rage) in spirit, and Himself troubled (agitated). 34And He said, Where have you laid him. They say to Him, Lord, come and see. 35Jesus wept. 36Then the Jews said, Behold, how He loved (ephilei) him! 37And some of them said, Was not this man able, having opened the eyes of the blind man, to have made that also this one should not have died?

38Jesus therefore again being deeply moved in Himself comes unto the tomb. And it was a cave and a stone was lying upon it. 39Jesus says, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the one having died, says to Him, Lord, he already stinks, for it is four days. 40Jesus says to her, Did I not say to you, that if you should believe, you will see the glory of God? 41They took away therefore the stone. And Jesus lifted his eyes upwards and said, Father, I thank you that You have heard Me. 42And I knew that You always hear Me; but on account of the crowd standing around I said it, so that they might believe that You sent Me. 43And having said these things with a great voice, He cried, Lazarus, Come here outside! 44And the one having been dead came out, being bound at the feet and the hands with linen strips and his face bound about with a handkerchief. Jesus says to them, Unbind him and remit him to go.

45Many therefore from out of the Jews having come to Mary and having seen what He did, believed unto Him; 46However some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

47The chief priests and the Pharisees therefore gathered a council, and said, What are we to do? Because this man does many signs. 48If we let Him thus alone, all will believe unto Him, and the Romans will come and will take away our place and ethnicity (nation). 49However a certain one from out of them, Caiaphas, being the high priest that year, said to them, You do not know anything! 50Nor consider you that it is beneficial for us that one man should die for the people and the whole nation (ethniticity) should not perish. 51And this he said not from himself, but being the high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the sake of the nation (ethnicity); 52And not only for the sake of the nation, but so that also the children of God, those having been scattered, he might gather together into one. 53From that day therefore, they took deliberation (counsel) together so that they might kill Him.

54Then Jesus no longer openly (freely, boldly) walked among the Jews, but He went away from there into the region near the wilderness unto a city called Ephraim, and there He stayed with the disciples.

55And the Passover of the Jews was near and many went up unto Jerusalem from out of the region before the Passover, so that they might purify themselves. 56They were seeking therefore Jesus and were saying with one another standing in the temple, What does it seem to you that He will not come unto the feast? 57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, so that if anyone should know where He is, he should make it known, so that they might apprehend Him.
