Jesus and the Samaritan Woman
1Ὡς (When) οὖν (therefore) ἔγνω (knew) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς* (Jesus) ὅτι (that) ἤκουσαν (heard) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) πλείονας (more) μαθητὰς (disciples) ποιεῖ (makes) καὶ (and) βαπτίζει (baptizes) ἢ (than) Ἰωάννης (John)—
2καίτοιγε (although indeed) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) αὐτὸς (Himself) οὐκ (not) ἐβάπτιζεν (was baptizing), ἀλλ’ (but) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him)—
3ἀφῆκεν (He left) τὴν (-) Ἰουδαίαν (Judea), καὶ (and) ἀπῆλθεν (went away) πάλιν (again) εἰς (into) τὴν (-) Γαλιλαίαν (Galilee).
4Ἔδει (It was necessary for) δὲ (now) αὐτὸν (Him) διέρχεσθαι (to pass) διὰ (through) τῆς (-) Σαμαρείας (Samaria).
5ἔρχεται (He comes) οὖν (therefore) εἰς (to) πόλιν (a city) τῆς (-) Σαμαρείας (of Samaria) λεγομένην (called) Συχὰρ (Sychar), πλησίον (near) τοῦ (the) χωρίου (plot of ground) ὃ (that) ἔδωκεν (had given) Ἰακὼβ (Jacob) ‹τῷ› (to) Ἰωσὴφ (Joseph), τῷ (the) υἱῷ (son) αὐτοῦ (of him).
6ἦν (Was) δὲ (now) ἐκεῖ (there) πηγὴ (the well) τοῦ (-) Ἰακώβ (of Jacob). ὁ (-) οὖν (Therefore) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), κεκοπιακὼς (being wearied) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) ὁδοιπορίας (journey), ἐκαθέζετο (was sitting) οὕτως (thus) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) πηγῇ (well). ὥρα (The hour) ἦν (was) ὡς (about) ἕκτη (the sixth).
7Ἔρχεται (Comes) γυνὴ (a woman) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (-) Σαμαρείας (Samaria) ἀντλῆσαι (to draw) ὕδωρ (water). λέγει (Says) αὐτῇ (to her) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Δός (Give) μοι (Me) πεῖν (to drink).”
8οἱ (-) γὰρ (For) μαθηταὶ (the disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἀπεληλύθεισαν (had gone away) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) πόλιν (city), ἵνα (that) τροφὰς (food) ἀγοράσωσιν (they might buy).
9Λέγει (Says) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῷ (to Him) ἡ (the) γυνὴ (woman) ἡ (-) Σαμαρῖτις (Samaritan), “Πῶς (How) σὺ (You) Ἰουδαῖος (a Jew) ὢν (being), παρ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (me) πεῖν (to drink) αἰτεῖς (do ask), γυναικὸς (a woman) Σαμαρίτιδος (Samaritan) οὔσης (being)?” οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) συνχρῶνται (have association) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) Σαμαρίταις (with Samaritans).
10Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῇ (to her), “Εἰ (If) ᾔδεις (you had known) τὴν (the) δωρεὰν (gift) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) τίς (who) ἐστιν (it is) ὁ (-) λέγων (saying) σοι (to you), ‘Δός (Give) μοι (Me) πεῖν (to drink),’ σὺ (you) ἂν (-) ᾔτησας (would have asked) αὐτὸν (Him), καὶ (and) ἔδωκεν (He would have given) ἄν (-) σοι (to you) ὕδωρ (water) ζῶν (living).”
11Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to Him) ‹ἡ (the) γυνή› (woman) “Κύριε (Sir), οὔτε (nothing) ἄντλημα (to draw with) ἔχεις (You have), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) φρέαρ (well) ἐστὶν (is) βαθύ (deep); πόθεν (from where) οὖν (then) ἔχεις (have You) τὸ (the) ὕδωρ (water) τὸ (-) ζῶν (living)?
12μὴ (Not) σὺ (You) μείζων (greater than) εἶ (are) τοῦ (the) πατρὸς (father) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰακώβ (Jacob), ὃς (who) ἔδωκεν (gave) ἡμῖν (us) τὸ (the) φρέαρ (well), καὶ (and) αὐτὸς (himself) ἐξ (of) αὐτοῦ (it) ἔπιεν (drank), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) υἱοὶ (sons) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) θρέμματα (livestock) αὐτοῦ (of him)?”
13Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῇ (to her), “Πᾶς (Everyone) ὁ (-) πίνων (drinking) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) ὕδατος (water) τούτου (this) διψήσει (will thirst) πάλιν (again);
14ὃς (whoever) δ’ (however) ἂν (-) πίῃ (may drink) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) ὕδατος (water) οὗ (that) ἐγὼ (I) δώσω (will give) αὐτῷ (him), οὐ (never) μὴ (not) διψήσει (will thirst), εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age). ἀλλὰ (Instead), τὸ (the) ὕδωρ (water) ὃ (that) δώσω (I will give) αὐτῷ (to him) γενήσεται (will become) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him) πηγὴ (a spring) ὕδατος (of water), ἁλλομένου (welling up) εἰς (into) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal).”
15Λέγει (Says) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) ἡ (the) γυνή (woman), “Κύριε (Sir), δός (give) μοι (me) τοῦτο (this) τὸ (-) ὕδωρ (water), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) διψῶ (I might thirst), μηδὲ (nor) διέρχωμαι (come) ἐνθάδε (here) ἀντλεῖν (to draw).”
16Λέγει (He says) αὐτῇ (to her), “Ὕπαγε (Go), φώνησον (call) τὸν (the) ἄνδρα (husband) σου (of you) καὶ (and) ἐλθὲ (come) ἐνθάδε (here).”
17Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) ἡ (the) γυνὴ (woman) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) ‹αὐτῷ› (to Him) “Οὐκ (Not) ἔχω (I have) ἄνδρα (a husband).”
Λέγει (Says) αὐτῇ (to her) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Καλῶς (Correctly) εἶπας* (you have spoken) ὅτι (-), ‘Ἄνδρα (A husband) οὐκ (not) ἔχω (I have).’
18πέντε (Five) γὰρ (for) ἄνδρας (husbands) ἔσχες (you have had), καὶ (and) νῦν (now) ὃν (he whom) ἔχεις (you have), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) σου (your) ἀνήρ (husband); τοῦτο (this) ἀληθὲς (truly) εἴρηκας (you have spoken).”
19Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to Him) ἡ (the) γυνή (woman), “Κύριε (Sir), θεωρῶ (I understand) ὅτι (that) προφήτης (a prophet) εἶ (are) σύ (You).
20οἱ (The) πατέρες (fathers) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐν (on) τῷ (the) ὄρει (mountain) τούτῳ (this) προσεκύνησαν (worshiped), καὶ (and) ὑμεῖς (you) λέγετε (say) ὅτι (that) ἐν (in) Ἱεροσολύμοις (Jerusalem) ἐστὶν (is) ὁ (the) τόπος (place) ὅπου (where) προσκυνεῖν (to worship) δεῖ (it is necessary).”
21Λέγει (Says) αὐτῇ (to her) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Πίστευέ (Believe) μοι (Me), γύναι (woman), ὅτι (that) ἔρχεται (is coming) ὥρα (an hour) ὅτε (when) οὔτε (neither) ἐν (on) τῷ (the) ὄρει (mountain) τούτῳ (this), οὔτε (nor) ἐν (in) Ἱεροσολύμοις (Jerusalem), προσκυνήσετε (will you worship) τῷ (the) Πατρί (Father).
22ὑμεῖς (You) προσκυνεῖτε (worship) ὃ (what) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (you know); ἡμεῖς (we) προσκυνοῦμεν (worship) ὃ (what) οἴδαμεν (we know), ὅτι (for) ἡ (-) σωτηρία (salvation) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews) ἐστίν (is).
23ἀλλὰ (But) ἔρχεται (is coming) ὥρα (an hour) καὶ (and) νῦν (now) ἐστιν (is), ὅτε (when) οἱ (the) ἀληθινοὶ (true) προσκυνηταὶ (worshipers) προσκυνήσουσιν (will worship) τῷ (the) Πατρὶ (Father) ἐν (in) πνεύματι (spirit) καὶ (and) ἀληθείᾳ (truth); καὶ (also) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) τοιούτους (such) ζητεῖ (seeks), τοὺς (who) προσκυνοῦντας (worship) αὐτόν (Him).
24Πνεῦμα (Spirit) ὁ (-) Θεός (God is), καὶ (and) τοὺς (those) προσκυνοῦντας (worshiping) ‹αὐτὸν› (Him) ἐν (in) πνεύματι (spirit) καὶ (and) ἀληθείᾳ (truth) δεῖ (it behooves) προσκυνεῖν (to worship).”
25Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to Him) ἡ (the) γυνή (woman), “Οἶδα (I know) ὅτι (that) Μεσσίας (Messiah) ἔρχεται (is coming), ὁ (who) λεγόμενος (is called) Χριστός (Christ); ὅταν (when) ἔλθῃ (comes) ἐκεῖνος (He), ἀναγγελεῖ (He will tell) ἡμῖν (us) ἅπαντα (all things).”
26Λέγει (Says) αὐτῇ (to her) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am He), ὁ (the One) λαλῶν (speaking) σοι (to you).”

27Καὶ (And) ἐπὶ (upon) τούτῳ (this) ἦλθαν (came) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) ἐθαύμαζον (were amazed) ὅτι (that) μετὰ (with) γυναικὸς (a woman) ἐλάλει (He was speaking); οὐδεὶς (no one) μέντοι (however) εἶπεν (said), “Τί (What) ζητεῖς (seek You)?” ἢ (Or) “Τί (Why) λαλεῖς (speak You) μετ’ (with) αὐτῆς (her)?”
28Ἀφῆκεν (Left) οὖν (then) τὴν (the) ὑδρίαν (water pot) αὐτῆς (of her) ἡ (the) γυνὴ (woman), καὶ (and) ἀπῆλθεν (went away) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) πόλιν (city), καὶ (and) λέγει (says) τοῖς (to the) ἀνθρώποις (men),
29“Δεῦτε (Come), ἴδετε (see) ἄνθρωπον (a man) ὃς (who) εἶπέν (told) μοι (me) πάντα (all things) ὅσα* (whatever) ἐποίησα (I did). μήτι (Can it be that) οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ)?”
30ἐξῆλθον (They went forth) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) πόλεως (city) καὶ (and) ἤρχοντο (were coming) πρὸς (unto) αὐτόν (Him).
31Ἐν (But in) τῷ (the) μεταξὺ (meantime) ἠρώτων (were asking) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples), λέγοντες (saying), “Ῥαββί (Rabbi), φάγε (eat).”
32Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἐγὼ (I) βρῶσιν (food) ἔχω (have) φαγεῖν (to eat) ἣν (that) ὑμεῖς (you) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (know).”
33Ἔλεγον (Were saying) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) πρὸς (to) ἀλλήλους (one another), “Μή (No) τις (one) ἤνεγκεν (did bring) αὐτῷ (Him) φαγεῖν (anything to eat)?”
34Λέγει (Says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἐμὸν (My) βρῶμά (food) ἐστιν (is) ἵνα (that) ποιήσω* (I should do) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (of the One) πέμψαντός (having sent) με (Me), καὶ (and) τελειώσω (should finish) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τὸ (the) ἔργον (work).
35οὐχ (Not) ὑμεῖς (you) λέγετε (say) ὅτι (that) Ἔτι (yet) τετράμηνός (four months) ἐστιν (it is), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) θερισμὸς (harvest) ἔρχεται (comes)? ἰδοὺ (Behold), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐπάρατε (lift up) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) ὑμῶν (of you) καὶ (and) θεάσασθε (see) τὰς (the) χώρας (fields), ὅτι (because) λευκαί (white) εἰσιν (they are) πρὸς (toward) θερισμόν (harvest) ἤδη (already)!
36Ὁ (The one) θερίζων (reaping) μισθὸν (a reward) λαμβάνει (receives) καὶ (and) συνάγει (gathers) καρπὸν (fruit) εἰς (unto) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal), ἵνα (so that) ὁ (the one) σπείρων (sowing) ὁμοῦ (together) χαίρῃ (may rejoice), καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) θερίζων (reaping).
37ἐν (In) γὰρ (for) τούτῳ (this) ὁ (the) λόγος (saying) ἐστὶν (is) ἀληθινὸς (true) ὅτι (-), ‘Ἄλλος (One) ἐστὶν (is) ὁ (-) σπείρων (sowing), καὶ (and) ἄλλος (another) ὁ (-) θερίζων (reaping).’
38ἐγὼ (I) ἀπέστειλα (sent) ὑμᾶς (you) θερίζειν (to reap) ὃ (what) οὐχ (not) ὑμεῖς (you) κεκοπιάκατε (have toiled for); ἄλλοι (others) κεκοπιάκασιν (have toiled), καὶ (and) ὑμεῖς (you) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόπον (labor) αὐτῶν (of them) εἰσεληλύθατε (have entered).”

42τῇ (-) τε (and) γυναικὶ (to the woman) ἔλεγον (they were saying) ὅτι (-), “Οὐκέτι (No longer) διὰ (because of) τὴν (-) σὴν (your) λαλιὰν (speech) πιστεύομεν (we believe); αὐτοὶ (we ourselves) γὰρ (for) ἀκηκόαμεν (have heard), καὶ (and) οἴδαμεν (we know) ὅτι (that) οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) ἀληθῶς (truly) ὁ (the) Σωτὴρ (Savior) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world).”

54Τοῦτο (This is) δὲ (now) πάλιν (again) δεύτερον (the second) σημεῖον (sign) ἐποίησεν (did) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), ἐλθὼν (having come) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (-) Ἰουδαίας (Judea) εἰς (into) τὴν (-) Γαλιλαίαν (Galilee).
