1After these things, Jesus crossed over the Sea of Galilee; (or Sea of Tiberias); 2And a great multitude followed Him, because they had seen the miracles that He worked upon those who were sick. 3Then Jesus went up into a mountain and sat there with His disciples. 4Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near. 5And when Jesus lifted up His eyes and saw a great multitude coming toward Him, He said to Philip, "How shall we buy enough loaves to feed all these?" 6But He said this to test him, because He knew what He was about to do. 7Philip answered Him, "Two hundred silver coins would not be sufficient to buy enough loaves for each of them to receive a little." 8Then one of His disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to Him, 9"Here is a little boy who has five barley loaves and two small fish; but what are these for so many people?" 10Then Jesus said, "Have the men sit down." Now there was much grass in the place; therefore the men sat down, about five thousand in number. 11And Jesus took the loaves; and when He had given thanks, He distributed them to the disciples, and the disciples to those who were sitting; and in like manner the small fish, as much as they desired. 12And when they were filled, He said to His disciples, "Gather together the fragments that are left over, so that nothing may be lost." 13Then they gathered them together, filling twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves, which were left over by those who had eaten. 14Now when the men saw the miracle that Jesus had done, they said, "Of a truth, this is the Prophet Who was to come into the world."

15Because Jesus perceived that they were about to come and seize Him, so that they might make Him king, He withdrew again to a mountain by Himself alone.

16Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea; 17And they went into a ship and were crossing the sea to Capernaum; for it had already become dark, and Jesus had not come to them. 18But the sea was tossing because a strong wind was blowing. 19And after rowing about twenty-five or thirty furlongs, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and approaching the ship; and they were afraid. 20But He said to them, "I am He. Do not be afraid." 21Then they willingly received Him into the ship; and immediately the ship was at the land to which they were going.

22On the next day, the multitude standing on the other side of the sea, who had observed that no other small ship was there besides the one into which the disciples had entered, and that Jesus had not gone into the small ship with His disciples, but that His disciples had departed alone; 23(But other small ships had come from Tiberias near the place where they had eaten the bread, after the Lord had given thanks;) 24Accordingly, when the multitude saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also went in the ships and came to Capernaum, looking for Jesus. 25And after finding Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, "Rabbi, when did You come here?"

26Jesus answered them and said, "Truly, truly I say to you, you do not seek Me because you saw the miracles, but because you ate the bread and were satisfied. 27Do not labor for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures unto eternal life, which the Son of man shall give to you; for Him has God the Father sealed." 28Therefore, they said to Him, "What shall we do, in order that we ourselves may do the works of God?" 29Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God: that you believe in Him Whom He has sent." 30Therefore, they said to Him, "What sign will You perform, that we may see it and believe You? What work will You do? 31Our fathers ate manna in the wilderness, as it is written: 'He gave them bread to eat that came down from heaven. ' " 32Then Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven; but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33For the bread of God is He Who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." 34Therefore, they said to Him, "Lord, give this bread to us always."

35Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; the one who comes to Me shall never hunger; and the one who believes in Me shall never thirst at any time. 36But as I said to you, you also have seen Me, yet you do not believe. 37All whom the Father gives Me shall come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will in no wise cast out. 38For I did not come down from heaven to do My own will, but the will of Him Who sent Me. 39And this is the will of the Father Who sent Me: that of all whom He has given Me, I should not lose any, but should raise them up in the last day. 40And this is the will of Him Who sent Me: that everyone who sees the Son, and believes in Him, may have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day."

41Then the Jews were complaining against Him, because He said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven." 42And they were saying, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? Why then does He say, 'I came down from heaven'? " 43For this reason, Jesus answered them and said, "Do not be complaining among one another. 44No one can come to Me unless the Father, Who sent Me, draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. 45It is written in the prophets, 'And they shall all be taught by God. ' Therefore, everyone who has heard from the Father, and has learned, comes to Me. 46No one has seen the Father except He Who is from God; He has seen the Father. 47Truly, truly I say to you, the one who believes in Me has eternal life. 48I am the bread of life. 49Your fathers ate manna in the desert, but they died. 50This is the bread which comes down from heaven so that anyone may eat of it and not die. 51I am the living bread, which came down from heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he shall live forever; and the bread that I will give is even My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world."

52Because of this, the Jews were arguing with one another, saying, "How is He able to give us His flesh to eat?" 53Therefore, Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink His blood, you do not have life in yourselves. 54The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up in the last day; 55For My flesh is truly food, and My blood is truly drink. 56The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood is dwelling in Me, and I in him. 57As the living Father has sent Me, and I live by the Father; so also the one who eats Me shall live by Me. 58This is the bread which came down from heaven; not as your fathers ate manna, and died. The one who eats this bread shall live forever."

59These things He said in the synagogue as He was teaching in Capernaum.

60Therefore, after hearing these words, many of His disciples said, "This is a hard saying. Who is able to hear it?" 61But Jesus, knowing that His disciples were complaining about this, said to them, "Does this offend you? 62What if you shall see the Son of man ascending up where He was before? 63It is the Spirit that gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you, they are spirit and they are life. 64But there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus knew from the beginning who were the ones that did not believe, and who would betray Him. 65And He said, "For this reason, I have said to you, no one can come to Me unless it has been given to him from My Father."

66From that time, many of His disciples went back and walked no more with Him. 67Therefore, Jesus said to the twelve, "Are you also desiring to go away?" 68Then Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life; 69And we have believed and have known that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." 70Jesus answered them, "Did I not choose you twelve, and one of you is a devil?" 71Now He spoke of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son; for he was about to betray Him, being one of the twelve.
