So they arrived at the other side of the lake, in the region of the Gerasenes. | 1They came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gerasenes. |
When Jesus climbed out of the boat, a man possessed by an evil spirit came out from the tombs to meet him. | 2When He got out of the boat, immediately a man from the tombs with an unclean spirit met Him, |
This man lived in the burial caves and could no longer be restrained, even with a chain. | 3and he had his dwelling among the tombs. And no one was able to bind him anymore, even with a chain; |
Whenever he was put into chains and shackles—as he often was—he snapped the chains from his wrists and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue him. | 4because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him and the shackles broken in pieces, and no one was strong enough to subdue him. |
Day and night he wandered among the burial caves and in the hills, howling and cutting himself with sharp stones. | 5Constantly, night and day, he was screaming among the tombs and in the mountains, and gashing himself with stones. |
When Jesus was still some distance away, the man saw him, ran to meet him, and bowed low before him. | 6Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him; |
With a shriek, he screamed, “Why are you interfering with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In the name of God, I beg you, don’t torture me!” | 7and shouting with a loud voice, he said, "What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!" |
For Jesus had already said to the spirit, “Come out of the man, you evil spirit.” | 8For He had been saying to him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!" |
Then Jesus demanded, “What is your name?” And he replied, “My name is Legion, because there are many of us inside this man.” | 9And He was asking him, "What is your name?" And he said to Him, "My name is Legion; for we are many." |
Then the evil spirits begged him again and again not to send them to some distant place. | 10And he began to implore Him earnestly not to send them out of the country. |
There happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding on the hillside nearby. | 11Now there was a large herd of swine feeding nearby on the mountain. |
“Send us into those pigs,” the spirits begged. “Let us enter them.” | 12The demons implored Him, saying, "Send us into the swine so that we may enter them." |
So Jesus gave them permission. The evil spirits came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the entire herd of about 2,000 pigs plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned in the water. | 13Jesus gave them permission. And coming out, the unclean spirits entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, about two thousand of them; and they were drowned in the sea. |
The herdsmen fled to the nearby town and the surrounding countryside, spreading the news as they ran. People rushed out to see what had happened. | 14Their herdsmen ran away and reported it in the city and in the country. And the people came to see what it was that had happened. |
A crowd soon gathered around Jesus, and they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons. He was sitting there fully clothed and perfectly sane, and they were all afraid. | 15They came to Jesus and observed the man who had been demon-possessed sitting down, clothed and in his right mind, the very man who had had the "legion"; and they became frightened. |
Then those who had seen what happened told the others about the demon-possessed man and the pigs. | 16Those who had seen it described to them how it had happened to the demon-possessed man, and all about the swine. |
And the crowd began pleading with Jesus to go away and leave them alone. | 17And they began to implore Him to leave their region. |
As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon possessed begged to go with him. | 18As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed was imploring Him that he might accompany Him. |
But Jesus said, “No, go home to your family, and tell them everything the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been.” | 19And He did not let him, but He said to him, "Go home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you." |
So the man started off to visit the Ten Towns of that region and began to proclaim the great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed at what he told them. Jesus Heals in Response to Faith | 20And he went away and began to proclaim in Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed. |
Jesus got into the boat again and went back to the other side of the lake, where a large crowd gathered around him on the shore. | 21When Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him; and so He stayed by the seashore. |
Then a leader of the local synagogue, whose name was Jairus, arrived. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet, | 22One of the synagogue officials named Jairus came up, and on seeing Him, fell at His feet |
pleading fervently with him. “My little daughter is dying,” he said. “Please come and lay your hands on her; heal her so she can live.” | 23and implored Him earnestly, saying, "My little daughter is at the point of death; please come and lay Your hands on her, so that she will get well and live." |
Jesus went with him, and all the people followed, crowding around him. | 24And He went off with him; and a large crowd was following Him and pressing in on Him. |
A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding. | 25A woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years, |
She had suffered a great deal from many doctors, and over the years she had spent everything she had to pay them, but she had gotten no better. In fact, she had gotten worse. | 26and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse-- |
She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his robe. | 27after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak. |
For she thought to herself, “If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.” | 28For she thought, "If I just touch His garments, I will get well." |
Immediately the bleeding stopped, and she could feel in her body that she had been healed of her terrible condition. | 29Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction. |
Jesus realized at once that healing power had gone out from him, so he turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my robe?” | 30Immediately Jesus, perceiving in Himself that the power proceeding from Him had gone forth, turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched My garments?" |
His disciples said to him, “Look at this crowd pressing around you. How can you ask, ‘Who touched me?’” | 31And His disciples said to Him, "You see the crowd pressing in on You, and You say, 'Who touched Me?'" |
But he kept on looking around to see who had done it. | 32And He looked around to see the woman who had done this. |
Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front of him and told him what she had done. | 33But the woman fearing and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. |
And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over.” | 34And He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace and be healed of your affliction." |
While he was still speaking to her, messengers arrived from the home of Jairus, the leader of the synagogue. They told him, “Your daughter is dead. There’s no use troubling the Teacher now.” | 35While He was still speaking, they came from the house of the synagogue official, saying, "Your daughter has died; why trouble the Teacher anymore?" |
But Jesus overheard them and said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid. Just have faith.” | 36But Jesus, overhearing what was being spoken, said to the synagogue official, "Do not be afraid any longer, only believe." |
Then Jesus stopped the crowd and wouldn’t let anyone go with him except Peter, James, and John (the brother of James). | 37And He allowed no one to accompany Him, except Peter and James and John the brother of James. |
When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw much commotion and weeping and wailing. | 38They came to the house of the synagogue official; and He saw a commotion, and people loudly weeping and wailing. |
He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child isn’t dead; she’s only asleep.” | 39And entering in, He said to them, "Why make a commotion and weep? The child has not died, but is asleep." |
The crowd laughed at him. But he made them all leave, and he took the girl’s father and mother and his three disciples into the room where the girl was lying. | 40They began laughing at Him. But putting them all out, He took along the child's father and mother and His own companions, and entered the room where the child was. |
Holding her hand, he said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means “Little girl, get up!” | 41Taking the child by the hand, He said to her, "Talitha kum!" (which translated means, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!"). |
And the girl, who was twelve years old, immediately stood up and walked around! They were overwhelmed and totally amazed. | 42Immediately the girl got up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were completely astounded. |
Jesus gave them strict orders not to tell anyone what had happened, and then he told them to give her something to eat. | 43And He gave them strict orders that no one should know about this, and He said that something should be given her to eat. |
